Attended the End of Summer Party with Howard Donald yesterday with friends. Having booked the tickets in the Spring and bought a ticket as a gift for a friends birthday it was a day that we’d been looking forward to for quite some time. Upon arrival at the venue the car park was busy, there was a wedding just about to get underway. We headed to the Grand Marquee to meet friends and join the queue for the event. Many guests had been to the bar and were sitting in the sunshine waiting for the doors to open only to be told by security that they couldn’t take their purchased drinks into the marquee which seemed odd. The marquee looked stunning and we got taken to our table only to find 4 afternoon tea stands on half of the table. I asked the waitress what it was and her reply was “lunch” I explained that we were expecting (as advertised) a two course meal. The waitress had no idea what we were taking about. We were absolutely gobsmacked. We asked to speak to a manager. By this point it was evident we were not the only ones who were unhappy, the poor waiting staff were getting complaints from more and more guests. The manager came over and confirmed that the afternoon tea stands were indeed our lunch but also that it was one stand between two 😱 the afternoon teas had clearly been sitting for some time, the bread was hard, the deserts (if that’s what they were meant to be) looked as though someone had dropped them. There was pate and cured meets which neither of us were willing to try given they’d been sitting. We then asked to speak to the most senior member of management on duty… Along comes the “Managing Director” who when asked if he thought the food on display reflected what was advertised and the ticket price. His response was “yes the foods good in here” we had to disagree to which he then joked “maybe once Howard comes on you’ll forget all about it”!!!! He the said he’d organise for more food to be brought out but never appeared. We asked that he leave and come back to us with a solution.. he did not. The guests on the other half of our table also complained at having no food on their table or their pre ordered drinks. They got offered two bottles of champagne as compensation but waited a further half an hour for their afternoon teas. A few hours into the event the water got cut off leading to a very unhygienic situation in the toilets. No toilets could flush and no one could wash their hands. It was clear that with the event and the wedding that the venue couldn’t cope and took it upon themselves to adjust the menu without informing anyone (not one person we spoke to received any comms from the venue to explain the change) yet still charging us the full ticket price. We left early, disappointed, angry and hungry. We won’t be returning anytime soon.
