Apartamentos Cala d'Or Playa

Just returned from a week in October, the last week of their season. Here’s some good and bad opinions on the hotel - Good - great location, 5/10 minute walk to mostly everything! Loads of shops close by for the essentials. This part of Mallorca is beautiful! Beaches/coves are stunning. The hotel pool is small (not sure you’d get much space in peak season) and there is no deep end…perfect for me, a non swimmer, as the water never went higher than chest height. Kids enjoyed the slides, they are on the smaller side but still enjoyable. Clean and decently modern apartment. Kitchen has everything you would need for easy meals. Toaster, small hob, microwave, fridge & all the utensils. Washing up liquid & cloths all supplied. We stayed in a ‘superior’ apartment & the balcony was great! Huge! We had an outside table & chairs for 4, 2 sunbeds and a drying rack. Loved it. The air con works throughout the apartment and worked well. Cleaners come every other day to make beds and change towels. The upside of visiting the last week of the season is it’s so quiet! No rush for sunbeds, they were available all day. We had lunch by the pool which was nice and reasonably priced, 4 meals 6 drinks €58. Bad - Arrived at 3am to a miserable man on reception, no pleasantries whatsoever. Really off putting for that to be your first impression of the hotel, especially at such an ungodly hour after a day of travelling with kids. The shower pressure is non existent, feels like someone slowly pouring water from a watering can on you. No vanity area to get ready, I like to take my time and relax when getting ready to go out so really missed somewhere to sit and look in the mirror. There was a mirror hanging in the bedroom but no plug near for dryer/straighteners & it’s too high up the wall to use a dining chair to sit and use it. I guess they mean for you to get ready in the bathroom but it’s just not enjoyable once someone’s had a shower - too humid. Pool freezing, I understand it’s late October so we were asking for it really but it does take your breath away. Also no floaty signs around the pool, this wasn’t enforced during our stay but I wonder if it is during busy months? Be aware they do not allow the floaties that have the netting to sit in…we were asked not to use this due to kids getting tangled. Poolside very slippy, saw a few people bodyslam the tiles. I told our kids to walk slowly & they didn’t fall…but for smaller kids who get easily excited I can see this being a problem. My husband found the beds too firm but I thought it was comfortable enough, I was cold during the night & the sheet wasn’t enough, I got down a blanket from the wardrobe but it smelt really musty so didn’t use it. We found the 4 medium towels provided just weren’t enough for 4 of us after showering (myself and my daughter need 2 each - body & hair) so we resorted to using our beach towels which wasn’t ideal. amazing holiday , with our 3 year old and 3 months old , one of my favourite holidays to date , the hotel itself was very clean and tidy , entertainment/ kids animation team were great !! I'm sure we got given the best room there which was 103 .. perfect view of the pool .. I did email before going and paid extra for a premium room , which comes with a terrace instead of a balcony.. we were so happy with the room we had 10/10 .. Lots of local shop near by the get your shopping in and plenty of places to eat near by for evening meal ect .. I don't think you can beat cala dor , so much to do and see.. 3 beaches within walking distance all beautiful and also a marina which is a 15 mins walk or taxi cost us €6 to get back one evening.. there is also a land train that can take you around cala dor - also stops by marina .. my only negative feed back would be hench the other review , the floors by the pool were very slippy , my husband fell over and my daughter did a couple of times definitely take pool shoes and also we were self catering so on an evening we would head down to watch entertainment, I took my own can of beer down , to be told I couldn't and had to buy from the bar Apart from that everything was perfect, would recommend , and would go back

We had our 3rd visit to the Cala d'or Playa in August and had a wonderful time! The team on reception were as welcoming as always, we had exchanged emails before visiting to book a pool view and the emails were always answered promptly and politely. The teams around the hotel were great! We didn't struggle getting sunbeds around the brilliant pools and had several lovely lunches around the pool. The position is fantastic, close to lots of lovely restaurants, Bon Sol was a favourite this year and beautiful beaches you really can't go wrong! Here's hoping to another holiday here next year! Our first time in Cala d'or and will most definitely be coming back soon. We stayed in the superior rooms and they were very comfortable and clean. Our rooms were cleaned, beds changed and fresh towels every second day. Our daughter loved how the maids folded our pj's and displayed her little soft toys every visit. It's those little touches that go a long way. Staff are all lovely (especially Rudy) . Pool is a great size with lots of loungers (just get up and out early). We were self-catering but added breakfast on a few of our mornings, which I would recommend. Other places I would highly recommend for food are Andy's Bar, Marivent and Rustic. Tropical Gardens for cocktails and a great atmosphere. Honestly it's a little gem and we can't wait to return

We would not return to this hotel and would like to warn other potential guests about the dangerous flooring around the pool and the lack of sun beds/space. The pool area is dangerous, the tiles are the so slippy, we had some near misses as adults and my children (wearing pool shoes) are covered in bruises and cuts (having to seek first aid every day). The actual pool floor has raised stumps which my children and others kept stubbing and cutting their toes on too, I have never seen a queue for first aid before at a hotel! The manager acknowledged the problem but nothing was done about it other than a couple of warning signs. The pool area is severely overcrowded and nothing like the photos online, I felt so claustrophobic and hemmed in. Again the manager admitted that there were not enough sun-beds, there are over 400 guests and we counted less than 160 sun beds. Even if there were more sun beds there was no space to put them (they were already 4 rows deep to the pool edge with no space in between other guests beds). They also had a lack of parasols which most guests want in the July/August heat (the ones they have are fixed so only cover a few beds so most people had to buy their own). We were told no reservation of beds but after breakfast all the beds were taken and clearly people were putting their towels down very early. If you did manage to get a bed they were extremely uncomfortable and filthy dirty, like they hadn’t been cleaned this season. I felt so anxious that I couldn’t see the children in the pool, especially given how dangerous the area is so I struggled to relax. Another issue which impacted our enjoyment of the hotel was that the Wi-Fi coverage is very poor -I couldn’t open a webpage or emails the whole time at the hotel even in the bar/reception area but connection was fine in restaurants in town. We loved Cala Dor and eating out in the beautiful restaurants but would never return to this hotel.

Cala Dor is such a beautiful place, hotel is located between two beaches, we spent 3 evenings at the cala gran beach until 10pm with our two small kids, we had pizza and a few beers , kids loved it, we ate in so many nice restaurants in cala dor, so i cannot comment on hotel eve meals , pool food was nice, there is a supermarket close by with a fresh bakery also, we had lunch on our balcony a few times ,the hotel is amazing for the kids , we had a 2 year old and 8 year old with us,entertainment in the day time is great, pool slides are a bonus, we had a pool view room , it was spotless clean , Rudy the bar man was so nice and very friendly, will definitely return
