What a wonderful place this is. Superb location. Fabulous views. Spotlessly clean accommodation. Friendly staff genuinely wanting to please. A marvellous choice for breakfast and a delicious dinner to be had in the sister hotel next door, a stroll away through beautifully kept gardens. Three granddaughters made full use of the two outdoor and the indoor pools, all heated, and found plenty of games to keep them occupied. This not one of those hotels with notices everywhere telling guests what they cannot do. A tremendous effort has been made to anticipate what guests may like to do and to ”go that extra mile” to achieve it - it has succeeded.

The hotel is self proclaimed five star on account of its facilities: two outside pools, an inside one, lovely landscaped gardens and games room. It is well maintained and presents well. The staff are all lovely and helpful. Below the glossy surface it’s not really five star: there is no lift and many stairs. We are in our late seventies and early eighties, not disabled but with plenty of arthritis and difficulty going downstairs in particular. We wouldn’t have booked if we had known. The web site shows the superior room having a very nice contemporary bathroom. Ours was nothing like it. Just plain white tiles, some mould around the bath and little space for our toiletries. Perhaps some have been modernised but not all. We foolishly assumed a modernised five star hotel would have walk in showers but had failed to check. It was very hard and risky for us getting in and out of the bath for a shower. In fact the hotel doesn’t seem to have facilities for the disabled who definitely can’t access the gardens. I appreciate this is being fussy but I don’t expect instant coffee in the room of a five star hotel. Our daughter suffered some sleepless times because of poor sound proofing in the floor above. She could hear every footstep. In 2024 there is no excuse for a poor internet connection. When it worked it was fine but sometimes didn’t exist or kept dropping. On the ground floor where our daughter had a room, it rarely worked at all. She was given the excuse of thick walls and an upgrade was planned. which didn’t help us. The food was just like the rest of the hotel. Beautifully presented but no better than a middling restaurant although reasonably priced. I’ve re-read the beautifully photographed and described web site. It’s all oversold. For example the rooms are shown with embellishments such as flowers to make it look more inviting. It is too much like an estate agent brochure, where you can inspect before buying. This led to us having high expectations which weren’t met. It was a shame because the facilities, cleanliness and lovely staff weren’t enough to overcome the sense of disappointment.

The Clifton is an Adults only Hotel situated in the perfect position overlooking the Sea but on a more or less level five minute walk through a tree lined pathway to the old village part of Shanklin where most of the best Restaurants are located. Booking in advance at the Restaurants is advised as they are busy. The Clifton Hotel bedroom was large and inviting with all the facilities, including a large television and stocked fridge, with an excellent on-suite walk-in shower room and toilet. The bed was really comfortable for a good nights sleep. The hotel public area was comfortable with a nice little bar and general sitting areas to look out over the bay. The breakfast was excellent with a good choice of both cold and hot options. For sunny warm days there was an outside veranda where you could sit and look out over the gardens and Seaview for breakfast. The staff are all friendly, welcoming and attentive to help you make the most of your stay. Would I recommend The Clifton, definitely.

I came here with a coach trip, so many of us had to be accommodated at the same time but the small team at the hotel were prepared apart from at breakfast which was very slow. The hotel is dated and could do with a freshen up, it brought me back to the 80s. The staff work tirelessly between reception and the bar and will go out of their way for you. The entertainment was fun Fri-Sunday and got us up dancing especially Jules, who I loved. The hotel is located very close to all the amenities, which was fantastic. The thatched tea rooms highly recommend about 10 mins walk out to the left of the hotel. No lift if you have mobility problems so let the hotel know. Only thing I would suggest if keeping hairdryers in the rooms and toiletries such as shampoo and shower gel. Would I go back……. Absolutely yes, I had a great time
