Hotel berhampiran Kreuzwasser, Cologne

The wheels came off right at the start, when the entire hotel car park was taken up by other cars, some badly parked. So we went to the reception to enquire where one might park. But before we could find out the answer, which by the way was: ”You'll just have to park on the road, . . . if there is space!” we had to wait our turn while the reception staff was trying to sort out a couple of men who were given a double bed when they clearly wanted a twin room. “Aahh! Mr & Mrs X, here for 4 nights. We have your 2 rooms ready!” said the receptionist. Upon snapping out of my stunned disbelief I replied: “1 room!” “No, you ordered 2 rooms” “No, 1 room”. Out came our booking reservation printout. Then began what seemed like a 10-minute discussion between the receptionist and another staff member as to how this could have happened, whilst we were left standing there (after a 12 hour journey) totally ignored rather than just been given a room – any room – and then sorting it out between them. The room was nice enough. Basic but big enough with a good sized bathroom and a decent shower. Only one pillow per person and the beds were on the hard side but OK. On revisiting the reception the next morning (and every subsequent morning) we were asked if we are checking out, indicating that nearly everyone only stays for 1 night. On asking what we need to do in order to obtain a parking space the answer was to arrive back before the evening. The only one time we managed to do this was the day before actually checking out, when we were charged 4 Euros for the privilege of parking that night. At no time were we asked whether we enjoyed our stay or if everything was to our liking. This hotel used to be very nice and a real find, which probably accounts for the 4.5 star rating but has now been taken over by the Novum group.

Great price for a hotel in this location. The room is a bit limited in size but very clean and comfortable. Being located virtually right behind the Cathedral, this hotel is a nice choice if you want to walk around the city.

Das Hotel liegt in Köln recht zentral. Auch die Möglichkeit direkt im Hotel zu frühstücken hat wohl den Ausschlag für die Buchung gegeben. Jedoch schon bei der Ankunft zeigte sich das an der Rezeption vor und nach mir es wohl Lautstärkedifferenzen zwischen den Buchungen der anreisenden Gäste und den Verständnis, der nur bedingt deutsch sprechenden Dame an der Rezeption gab. Mein mitreißender Kollege hat er eindeutig Frühstück mit bestellt. Musste dies aber am nächsten Morgen lautstark einfordern. Ich selbst, bin sehr viel in Hotels unterwegs hab es aber extrem selten erlebt, dass das Personal gegenseitig immer wieder lautstark vorgestern um Abläufe, welche eingeübt sein sollten, stritten. Mein Zimmer selbst war abgewohnt und hatte wohl den Flair der 1980 Jahre. Stromkabel einfach an die Wand geklebt, mit der Hoffnung, dass diese sich nicht wieder lösen. Insgesamt würde ich dieses Hotel nicht mehr buchen. Was den Grund, dass Mitarbeiter und Gäste sich ständig negativ anschreien.

The location is good, near cologne main train station and close to the river. it's very convenient. Rooms are big enough, but gyms kind of small. Hotel has is very big and like a shopping mall. I enjoyed my stay. Breakfast also good.

Well, the apartment is good, a bit bigger than a normal hotel room, but by no means ample. There are some irritating failures of design: Most pulling knobs are difficult to pull, being a smooth cylinder or similar. Only the fridge door has a proper pulling shape, so they were aware of the usefulness of the design, but chose not to do it on the rest. Also, the microwave has a grill, but also a notice on the door that says never to use the grill because it will start the fire alarm ??? Easier to buy non-grill microwaves, I'd say. They have something about fire alarms, because they make you sign a document where you declare to know about them and specify the fines for setting one accidentally. It discourages you from cooking at all :-) Also the bed can be raised and you get a sofa . The bed surface is one plank, it's comfortable, but the two ”arms” of the sofa are long and hard, easy to hit in the night if you rise from the bed. But these are generally minor inconveniences. The apartment looks clean in general, but there was a big exception. We noticed during the first night a strong old-sweat smell when in the bed. Investigation proved it to come from the mattress protector, which was also a bit brown when we took the sheet out. Clearly it hadn't been washed. I don't know what is the general policy in hotels about mattress protectors, but this one was obviously dirty, and they didn't wash it. We didn't take the issue to the management, we were tired, we just took the mattress protector away and slept without problems afterwards. So we don't know which would have been the reaction to this. but that shouldn't happen anyway.

There was no air conditioning (AC) even though the hotel advertised as having it. Their excuses was that it was too cool at night to operate the AC for the hotel even though it was actually very warm outside. Translation: the entire hotel is either on heat or AC, they are too frugal to allow use of the advertised AC, or their system is outdated and does not actually work properly. Very hot and stuff room. The odd thing was is that the hotel lobby seemed to have AC. The hallways and room were uncomfortably hot. Upon checking in there was only a little bit of toilet paper was left on the roll. Fortunately there was an extra roll provided. Only a few sheets of Kleenex were in the box. Also, the hand soap dispenser was nearly empty. It seems not much care is given to the rooms between guests. On our last day the housekeeper knocks on the door early in the morning even tough the “do not disturb” sign was hung on the door. It was a basic room with furnishings that included a desk, a small round table, 2 small nightstands, a desk chair, and one sitting chair. There was no usable refrigerator, just a mini bar. The was only one suitcase rack situated in the closet. We had to use the sitting chair for our other suitcase. The beds were not too comfortable. Also the pillow case did not completely cover the pillow, so your head might rest upon the exposed portion of the pillow where the lasts hundreds of guest placed their heads. Bathroom was OK but a bit smelly. The shower had low water pressure. Some water will leak out under the shower door to the floor. Stepping over the high tub with a slippery shower floor is a bit precarious. Internet speed was 3.81 Mbps in both upload and download, with 8 ms latency. The location is near the chocolate museum and a good pizza and pasta restaurant is nearby. The cathedral is less than a mile away. At almost 400 euros a night, it was very expensive for a poor experience. Perhaps HN stands for “Not Happy.”

Hotel staff, were professional, efficient and friendly. I was on a business trip, the hotel was convenient for a good connection to the road network, in the morning for business. While being convenient for access to the city and other amenities in the evening.

The location was great. Short walk from all main attractions in the City Centre. All food locations, christmas markets, transport access very conveniently available! We booked the Junior Suite. Whilst the towels were clean. And the beds were excellent. However, the toilet had a smell of leftover waste. =( And needed a few days to get the smell out. However, our stay had ended by then. So i'm not sure if this can be improved in the future. I do hope so. The service was excellent. The staff were willing to help clarify all our queries, and provide suggestions of places to visit. Facilities - I thought that for the Brand Name 'Hilton'. More facilities could have been made availble for us. Like a Gym. Evening Cocktails. Etc. As we had booked suites in other Hilton outlets across Europe and Asia, and the facilities availble to us, was a lot more. Probably can improve on this.

We were in the restaurant for coffee and cake, which was reasonably good but when we left after spending €32 we had to pay €5.40 for the hotel car par. We expected, the car park would’ve been free of charge in view of our consumption in the restaurant. Unfortunately there was no possibility to come to an agreement on a heylower , more adequate parking fee.
