The resort is not far from the city of Siliguri and is set in the middle of tea gardens with the mountains serving as a scenic backdrop. It is like the bungalows of tea estates where the “bada saheb” or manager resides, only this is bigger and fancier. The corridors are long and various areas are decorated with large cupboards while others have high backed chairs with a table and some have a group of wall mounted mirrors. Each cupboard has a specific item as display— blue pottery, ancient liquor bottles, types of tea etc. One gets a feel of having stepped back in time as the decorative items are made of stone, teak wood, marble, painted glass. The decor is beautiful, elegant and an interested person can enjoy these artistic items for long. Every wall has huge paintings while the stairs have carpets running down the middle, just like in older buildings. Our jungle view room opened onto the central green area which was a small tea garden. The room was big with a large balcony and all modern amenities. The resort has a swimming pool, board games and a spa besides a walking trail. A nice touch was organising the morning and evening tea sessions in the middle of a tea garden with old Bollywood songs playing in the background; it gave me a distinct retro feel. I enjoyed a couple of cups of awesome tea in Planter club which was their in-house café. Sunil and Kapesh, from their restaurant Tea Pot, deserve special mention for making our dinners so enjoyable. They were accurate in their suggestions and prompt with their actions. A few things for the resort to work on 1. Their breakfast consisted of a wide spread. Bakery items and egg station were fantastic. However the other items were not upto the mark— North Indian dishes, South Indian dishes…. 2. They have to find a way to shorten their time of cooking. Both at the restaurant (dinners) and in room service, it took a long time for the food to arrive. 3. I failed to understand how different choice of tea could be missing from the breakfast menu at a tea resort. 4. The pillows and the bed need to be made more comfortable for sure. An enjoyable stay in a beautiful resort with warm hospitality; however a long way to go if Mayfair want to be amongst the best in the country.
