Very tired and uninspiring hotel which does not live up to the reviews with a worrying security issue. Booked for 3 nights at a cost of £320 with breakfast included, parking is not included although the hotel appears to own the facility… so additional expense to be added. Upon entering the property the bar area looks well kept and shiny, the staff here pleasant and welcoming along with reception members. I was assigned room 019 which I was informed a ‘Deluxe’ experience; far from it unfortunately, the carpet and furnishings I would date back to the late 1970’s, stained, sticky and the space infused with the smell of a stale chip shop, the sash windows stuck closed and filthy on the outside so the little left of the afternoon considerably darkened, these have not been cleaned in some time… the TV albeit a flat screen quite old and non-responsive to presses from the worn remote control. Plug sockets, I could only find 2 in the entire room, none near the bed and clearly not enough in this day and age where I would expect to be able to charge my phone, watch, run my laptop, iron clothes, make a cup of tea etc. this exemplifies a clear lack of investment in the property. The wardrobe did not disappoint with its decrepit appearance and operation, the doors dropping open to reveal two lonely hangers, small ironing board with ill fitting stained cover and a poor relation to a travel iron which looked as though it had been used to toast bread and marmite, I would not be able to use this without fear of destroying my clothes. The bathroom next, an abomination of faux brick face and a job lot of tiles from the discount tile warehouse to a palatial effect with not much else going on, a shower enclosure encompassing half the space with basic white toilet/basin combo and a radiator that also referenced the 70’s with many coats of poorly applied paint trying to hide it’s uselessness. The lighting in both spaces dim and dismal, probably best given the grim overall demeanour. I could not stay in here so went and explained my concerns to reception, I was informed that this was a best offering and could not understand my concerns, but would see if they could offer an alternative; after 10 minutes the key for room 009 was presented to me with the comment, it smells fine albeit not deluxe and the decor perfect… well, after collecting my things from the ‘Deluxe’ grandeur of 019 I hurried in excitement to the promised delights of the upscale downgrade. I didn’t need to rush, same experience but with less of the cooking fat odour and in half the space, but with the addition of a single plug socket next to a double so an improvement but in the wrong place away from either side of the bed or near where you would be able to iron. Equipment, facilities, drab washed-out decor, state of repair as before, on the upside, the bed looked, felt and smelt almost clean - I no longer had the will to report and restart the process of asking if there was anything better, suspecting no
