We booked a twin-private room. The room was small, so we had to put the luggage under the bed. If you want your room to be cleaned, then you have to book the room cleaning by scanning a QR code, 1 day before. We did it, but then no one cleaned our room. We told the reception, and they said they didn't receive our request. Hence, we had to re-book for the following day, and we told the reception as well. Only then, our room got cleaning. They cleaning was the basic one, emptied the trash bin, and refilled the toilet tissue. They wouldn't make up your bed. The hostel is strategically located, but to shorten the length, you have to take the stairs step (around 300m only). If you are with heavy luggage, then it will be around 700m from the train station (wheel-chair access street)

Very happy to have found this place when availability was very low in the city. Room was clean, staff courteous, and amenities were more than adequate.

Travelled with my sister to Scotland on our first cross-country trip across the UK. The hostel was good, fairly clean, and accessible. Great location and good vibes. Would recommend.

I stayed at A&O Edinburgh Hostel during my trip to Edinburgh and had a solid experience overall. The location is excellent — right in the city center, within walking distance of the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and plenty of pubs and restaurants. The hostel itself is clean, and relaxing after a day of exploring. The staff were helpful and friendly, but it took a while to check-in. Rooms were basic but comfortable, especially considering the affordable price. Bathrooms were shared but well-maintained. If you’re a budget traveler looking for a central, convenient place to stay in Edinburgh without fuss, A&O is a good choice. Just be prepared for the usual hostel vibe—shared spaces and some noise. Would definitely consider staying here again!

I recently stayed at A&O Hostel from 4th to 7th July in Room 106, Bed 5. Unfortunately, my experience was tainted by an unresolved issue involving a £1.80 towel charge. At check-in, I paid for a towel, which I returned as instructed before checking out. However, despite following all procedures and assurances from the staff, I was never refunded the £1.80 deposit. I contacted reception multiple times and even left my details, but there was no follow-up or refund. It’s disappointing that such a large chain would fail to resolve a basic refund issue, especially over such a small amount — it feels negligent and unfair. This experience has made me question the transparency and customer service standards at A&O Hostels. I urge management to address this issue properly and ensure other guests do not go through the same inconvenience.

Stay 3 nights in this place：） Regi is the best reception, he is very friendly and helps me a lot !!! Solve a stressful problem for me, and made my Edinburgh trip be prefect! Besides, This is such a good place for solo traveller, the bed is also clean and service is so good and safe. I will back to this place again when I travel in Scotland🥰

The stay at a&o was amazing and totally worth. It‘s in the center of the city so easy to travel around. The hostel facilities are top class. However, the bar amenities are bit low at standard, mainly the food section, while ordered some french fries it was over cooked and not properly served. But the total experience was nice.

The place is in a very good location. The staffs are helpful when facing problems. The shower room and toilet are separated. I would stay here again if I come back to Edinburgh. I would recommend bringing your earplugs with you if you’re sensitive to noises when sleeping. They help a lot. Also, bring your padlocks for storage case if you don’t want to buy it at the counter for £2.

Had a bad experience overall. I paid for 3 night stay but I stayed only one night. Noise all night and People is running on the corridor and roof whole night.

Great hostel and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended, been going there for years and will return in the future..Only fault is there could be a quiet designated area to eat and read and relax. The bar dominates the social area.
