Yesterday we were part of a cooking class with Chef Tharada overlooking the lake behind Geoffrey Bawa’s residence. We were given a recipe book, chef’s hats and aprons. The ingredients were all laid out and Chef led us through the making of Dahl, been, beetroot, brinjal and prawn curries and of course the coconut sambol. It was very hands on, Chef encouraging us to be part of the preparation and explained as we went along. He answering our many questions, and offered many tips and tricks. It was magic seeing it all come together. And of course it tasted like heaven! As we cooked we shared stories about our families, which connected us. It is this connection that I have come to cherish throughout the resort. The kindness, genuine care and pride that is shown makes it a special place. Lunugana is filled with magic gardens, has rooms filled with interesting artefacts and offers wonderful vistas. There is so much more to say but I am now packing my little cookbook filled with recipes and memories of a great experience and a fabulous meal. If you come and stay at Bawa’s former home, consider the cooking class. Sri Lankan curries are fabulous, and we look forward to cooking them at home.
