Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge

We arrived at the Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge at around 18h00 the evening of the 16 January. We were greeted by one of the friendly Staff Members with a drink and refreshing cold face cloth. After check in we were shown our room. Sebastian, if I remember correctly helped us with our luggage. We had a spectacular view over the Dunes with the Camelthorn Trees. After a refreshing swim, it was time for Dinner. Dinner was served under the Stars.We enjoyed the complementary Bottle of Champagne with our meal whilst enjoying the view of the sky above. The 4 brightest Planets all visible at the same time, enjoying the beautiful evening weather. After a good night's sleep, we started our day with a refreshing swim an a hearty Breakfast upstairs in the Boma. On our way out, we were greeted by a couple of Giraffes that were leisurely grazing along the Edges of the Pan in the Reserve. Namibia has so many hidden Gems. We will certainly be back.

Situated in the sand hills on the edge of the Kalahari the location of the lodge is perfect. The individual chalets are spaced across the sand around the reception and dining lodge. The lodge overlooks a small waterhole and feeding station for animals and there are generally some about. Game drives are available and quite good but the number and variety of animals is limited as you would expect in the desert. Meals are provided and are excellent with an option for game at dinner. Staff are excellent, welcoming and efficient. The thatched rooms are spacious and very quiet complete with air conditioning and the beds are comfortable.

Stayed here for two nights as part of a three week road trip. The rooms are lovely, with just the right balance between rustic and luxury, though the A/C was quite noisy. The dining area / bar is well laid out, with some nice tables to sit and watch the sun go down and a pleasant swimming pool. Staff were friendly and welcoming and service was excellent. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served on an upper terrace with lovely views over the surrounding desert. Dinner is served around a firepit / BBQ area and the main course was buffet style. Although the food was generally good, some of the meat was a bit tough. We went on the bushman walk (which was highly entertaining) and the afternoon local game drive which was a gentle introduction to the wildlife of Namibia. We also walked around the area ourselves, taking advice from the very knowledgeable local management. Overall a very pleasant experience.
