This is a very pleasant hotel set in acres of parkland just outside Burley village. We stayed for four nights in a very comfortable ground floor room with undercover access to the central facilities. The large terrace and the bar area were particularly good, and the staff were always friendly and helpful. Our problem was with the food. We often stay in hotels of this calibre but have never before come across such a disappointing dinner menu. We had a job to order anything we liked on our first evening, so the next evening ate out. On the third night, having lunched well with friends elsewhere in the area, we ordered from the ”light bites” menu in the bar which was fine. On our final evening we had also lunched out so ordered ”light bites” again, only to be told that they were not available after 6.00.p.m. Apparently our order should not have been accepted the previous evening, although the menu said nothing about a cut-off time of 6.00. We therefore had no choice but to eat in the dining room from the dreaded menu, but confined ourselves to starter and dessert courses to avoid the dire main courses. I ordered the gazpacho soup which was frightful. I was expecting a bowl of cold tomato soup, but instead got a few tiny tomatoes in a dressing. We were originally seated in the conservatory area which at 7.30 was almost in darkness, so we couldn't read the menu and had to be moved back into the main dining area. The light wasn't that much better there. The breakfasts were OK, though no toast was served so you had to make your own on a communal toaster which continually burnt mine. And the ”fruit salad” was just melon and pineapple. Again, the self service area was badly lit, and the service was slow throughout. We would stop at this hotel again, but only if we were assured of a standard of fare befitting a hotel of this class. Until then we regret we cannot recommend it, unless you're prepared to dine out every evening.
