This is an amazing place to stay. Everyone is so friendly on staff, and the rooms and beach view are fantastic. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast and the meals were beautiful. We were very sad to only be staying one night: had it been earlier in our trip we would have changed our plans to stay. Lying in bed you can see the harbour very close up and hear the lapping of the sea on the shore. Also we did a walk up near the heads and saw Orca in the harbour. A lot of natural beauty in this area and not far down the road in the Kauri forest so a good base to do that from.

Lovely stay, two nights over the weekend. Nice comfy room, best shower had for a while. Hot as water and plenty of pressure. Fantastic meal in the restaurant, we all enjoyed it. Big ups to the chef. Very friendly, helpful staff members. They all looked after us top notch. The view from our room was looking straight out at the entrance to the Hokianga Harbour. We could walk right out to the beachfront. Great ambiance throughout this establishment

We know this place has been taken under new management and wow, it was such an amazing stay! We turned up and were greeted with just a warm front of house, she was so kind as to show us the Villa and the Two Bedroom Apartment as we wanted to upgrade to a Villa. The Villa was so beautiful, it comes with your own private spa. The Villa sleep 2 people normally but we requested a roll away bed for our son and it was fine. They were very accomodating. There are no views with the Villa but that was okay for us. The bed was the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept on in a hotel and the Villa was so clean and immaculate. We then went to have dinner and the staff in the dining area were just so pleasant to deal with. Very happy and will accomodate you for whatever you need. The Kai was absolutely delicious, we had a Belly Pork, the fish and chips and the lamb. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted just so yum. The fish and chips were the highlight! The facilities were clean in the reception/restaurant as well. Breakfast was a cooked bacon and egg meal, a la carte style so it was hot and fresh and bacon was perfect. Kudos to the chef. Amazing food. We cannot wait to come back soon.

A bit of TLC on the decor & facilities will up their rating as it was a little tired and in need of a boost. Comfy bed,good bathroom,superb views & pleasant staff are all plus's So hopefully next time will see the improvements required to match the location.

We just got married at The Sands. Pip and the team of wonderful staff were so accommodating, nothing was too much trouble or an inconvenience. The food was amazing, huge thanks to the chef! Villa was clean, well maintained and the bed was super comfortable. Thanks so much to you all for making a special day so incredible!

This hotel has been through a tough time and has changed hands. It is no longer 'The Heads' but 'The Sands' The new owner and staff are doing a wonderful job. Our rooms went straight out on to the beach and were spotlessly clean. The beds were extremely comfortable as were the pillows. We ate at the restaurant and there was a comprehensive menu and the food was excellent with generous servings. Highly recommended.

A pleasant stay right on the water. Our room had a glorious view of Hokianga Harbour. The room was simple but clean. We had dinner there too. The hotel name had changed so there was some confusion finding the place but all was well in the end. This is a good place to stay if you are going to the Footsteps of Kupe cultural experience. And I believe the hotel offers walking tours of the kauri forest too.

Comfy beds, good service. The restaurant are excellent, very good food, plenty of it and sooooooo tasteful. Highly recommend it. We even could get some special order which wasn’t on the menu. Wine is a bit expensive, but thats not unusual..

What a magical hotel & area. Huge room allowing direct access to Hokianga Bay. So peaceful, spotlessly clean, well decorated but understated fitting in with the area. Friendly staff & great bar & restaurant facilities but also plenty of little cafes along the coast. So wish we could have stayed longer.
