Hotel is so pretty and the view is stunning when you open the door. Matera is one of my favourite cities in Italy. Worth to stay at this hotel when visiting Matera and then you must be impressed by the city atmosphere. Next time I will stay at least for 2 nights to explore the city. What’s more, hotel staff introduced us one nearby restaurant which was so yummy. Thanks so much for her recommendation.

WOW! We were blown away by this place! One of the best stays we have ever had. Perfect! If you are looking to visit Italy, I implore you to visit Puglia and Basilicata! If you are looking to come to Puglia and Basilicata, I implore you to visit Matera! If you are looking to visit Matera, I implore you to stay at Locanda di San Martino! Right in the heart of the Sassi old town in Matera, the former church of San Martino. An amazing setting in a beautiful historic building set into the rocks. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to use the Roman thermal baths, which means we will need to come back! We stayed in room 8, La Chiesa. A wonderful room, the back of which is cut into the rock, the rest finished in what looks like the same stone. Very classy and stylish room with whirlpool bath (unfortunately the jets weren't working for us) right in the room, with shower and toilet built in to the back. Very comfortable bed. Breakfast room was fabulous! Looks like it might have been the refectory, again built in to the rocks and finished with the same stone. Breakfast was continental and extensive. Delicious! Our stay was very reasonably priced too 🤗 A great location to explore Matera, but be prepared to walk up and down steep stairways. We only had one night here but will come back for more. Hotel Heraclea has all the potentials to be a great hotel and offering an memorable stay. But it was a rather disappointing stay. Management and staff should wake up an reflect on al lot of things. But it isn’t all bad. Rooms are large and kept very tidy, breakfast is more than satisfying and offering a nice mix of Italian and more Northern ingredients. Dinner is nice as well. But. Staff is friendly but lame. The bartender is not always on top of things but like the others, tries hard. This hotel is big. But I have been to hospitals with far more warmth an coziness than the entrance, hallways and rooms, which are rather cold and basic. Rooms are noisy as well. One can hear too much from the adjacent rooms, let alone the one above. Most shocking experience was the welcome drink. Sounds nice and sympathetic. But offering some tiny drops (2cm?) of Italy’s finest prosecco in an even tiny plastic cup was flat-out embarrassing. A refill was hard to get, staff ignored the guests. Management should be ashamed (foremost for the plastic cups)! This of course, is an occasion on the side, but it is quite representative for the whole stay. With summer season on its way, they really should get their act together.

We arrived by car at this new, modern hotel. We could easily park the car in one of the free parking spaces in the fenced area in front of the impressive building. At the reception we were welcomed by a lady who was top friendly and super professional at the same time. When we checked in, we immediately felt warmly welcome. We were given valuable tips for our stay in the city, and we were also helped to book a table for dinner when seats in the restaurants were scarce because of the weekend. The spacious rooms have a creative design. At the same time, they are very homely. Everything is absolutely clean. The beds are comfortable with pleasant pillows. Air conditioning and rain shower are of course also part of the great equipment. At breakfast, we were equally welcomed by brilliant staff who complemented the rich, high-quality buffet with perfect service. We will be back!

Un hotel con lobby y áreas comunes muy muy bonitas; las habitaciones cómodas, limpias, llamando la atención algunos detalles (como que no funciona el aire acondicionado, un poco ruidoso). En recepción muy amables y atentos a nuestras dudas. Por el tiempo no pudimos usar la alberca ya que el horario de uso es limitado (10 a 19 hrs), se tocaba cálida el agua. Matera queda a 15 minutos en carro, el hotel tiene área de estacionamiento.

Upon a very early arrival we were welcomed by the lovely David who offered us a coffee while we waited for our room to be ready and took us out to see the spectacular views over the Sassi. We were blown away by the view on the terrace it is just gorgeous. Our cave room was lovely, clean very well equipped with a cute little courtyard. We had drinks on the terrace at sunset both nights, which was just amazing watching all the lights come on across the Sassi. Breakfast on the terrace each morning was very good with lots of lovely options. The staff were outstanding and very helpful with recommendations for restaurants, tours etc. Best place in Matera

To be honest, I was skeptical about this one. I needed to book the hotel last minute (like literally the previous night), so seeing an old-looking building (probably constructed in the 1980s) was not really encouraging BUT I wanted to see Matera, so I went ahead. The hotel surprised me and by a lot. First of all - yes, the building is old BUT all inside is renovated, so all is great. The rooms are good in size (not too small at all, just right) and everything is very clean. You have a full minibar if you want something and the hotel has a working restaurant and staff at reception 24/7. The breakfast is phenomenal (like, literally anything any traveler could want) and the staff are helpful and friendly. The best thing about the hotel is the location. Basically, there is no other hotel in Matera which is closer to the Sassi and the historical center. You just need 5 minutes of slow walking (entrance to the old town square is just behind the hotel :) ) and you are at the viewpoint and the cistern. There is a vending machine for snacks and drinks just less than 10 minutes away down the street from the hotel (in the old town) and any sights and amazing places to eat are within the same 5-10 minute distance. If you want to see the historical center of Matera, this is the place to stay (you won't regret it, trust me!). The hotel is very popular with Italians visiting Matera, so keep that in mind and if you are not travelling solo, like me, better book in advance :) The prime location comes with a single downside and a few things to consider (listing them here as they are just things to keep in mind and not something that is a huge issue) - the proximity to the Sassi means you will be quite far away from the bus station (3 kilometers) and the train station (1.5 kilometers). The distance is not that much BUT it is an uphill slope 90% of the time, so if you have a lot of luggage, better take a taxi. I loved it, so there is nothing I can put my finger at as a bad things, really, I just want to continue what I started above with the things you should keep in mind when visiting. If you come by car, make sure to notify the hotel in advance, as it is within a restricted parking area and parking lots are limited. Also be aware that the hotel is busy (as I said, very popular with Italians visiting) and check-in starts at 15.00, so if you come in earlier than that, you may need to wait. The staff would do anything they can to accommodate you early, BUT if you plan on arriving before noon, better notify them, to get your room ready. The hotel also have luggage storage, just so you know. Did I say I loved it? Just to repeat I can't wait to return!

I stayed here one night with the tour group. My room was 208 and was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was different. They had breads and pastries on the tables and would serve you coffee. I asked if they had eggs and was told they would come right out, But I didn't see any place for the eggs. They came out with about 12 oval dishes with 3 pieces of bacon and scrambled eggs, but the eggs looked like they were placed in the dish and then baked. They had a 'skin' on them. Maybe they sat out in the air for a few hours and had dried out. Three people were on my table and we got 3 dishes of eggs, so we each took one. The dishes were extremely hot. As more and more people came for breakfast, we were a group of 35, it was announced that only 3 dishes per table would be provided and we should share. OOPS. Because we early birds assumed one dish per person, there were not enough eggs for the later people. They had to make more eggs, but ran out of bacon! Was this because we were there off season? because everyone is trying to recover from the pandemic? because this region of Italy is cheap? because the tour company got a 'deal”? The gardens and grounds were beautiful and relaxing.

We were in this hotel at the beginning of June 24. Everything was absolutely perfect ! First of all, the kindness and commitment of Betty and Ivana on phone who gave us all the necessary informations to facilitate our arrival in Matéra and the journey to the hotel ! Then the warm welcome from Ivana upon our arrival ! The Help from Samir, so kind and available, with our luggage ! And which gives us information about the city. The hotel, ideally located in a quiet area, with a magnificent view on the Paleolithic caves, and which is entirely built in the rocks !! And the rooms, under the vaults, so chic, of exquisite taste, comfortable, where you immediately feels so good ! Finally, the breakfast, copious and varied, which offers fresh and delicious products ! It was an exceptional stay in an exceptional establishment ! We loved it and can’t wait… to come back soon !!

Hermoso albergo, lo único que no hay recepción. Tienes un código de acceso, algo que me la página de Orbitz no me indicaron nada. Tampoco el Albergo se puso en contacto conmigo como hacen los demás hoteles sin recepción. Te envían el código de acceso y te explican. Aquí me quedé bajo la lluvia un largo rato hasta que unas chicas que salían del complejo me dejaron entrar. Pero luego no había nadie en el hotel. Llegó alguien con muy mal carácter y e hice el check in. Me schools culpa a mi que no llamé para avisar a qué hora llegaba. 😳. Siempre me enviaron los códigos de acceso por email desde el hotel. Nunca tuve esta experiencia horrible. Luego, la habitación es linda, cómoda, buen baño. Equipado todo a full. Es excelente la ubicación. Salvando el detalle que tendrán para llegar. El resto todo bien.
