We have just returned from six weeks in France where we stayed in nine hotels and the Gradlon was by far the worst of the lot (most were fantastic). Glowing reviews in certain travel guides are completely outdated. This hotel has the air of one that is on the verge of going out of business. Specifics: The front desk clerk (daytime) was surly, slovenly, unfriendly, and unhelpful. No pleasantries whatsoever, even though we consistently spoke French to him and gave the customary “bon jour “, “bon journée “ and the like. No elevator, and when asked if there was one upon arrival with our bags, we’re told curtly “non” and offered no help whatsoever. All decor is outdated and needs freshening; the small table on the staircase landing was covered in dust. The outdoor rear garden/patio was weed-filled and lacked any charm whatsoever (it looked like it could be quite lovely given a bit of attention). While our room was comfortable enough all furnishings, carpet etc needed updating or replacing. Our one in-house breakfast was adequate but nothing special; the hotel seemed virtually deserted and now we know why. The one advantage this hotel has is its location, about five minutes walk to the heart of the old city, which is lovely. Be forewarned that upon arrival there is no where to pull in if you come by car- you must pull up on the sidewalk to unload. There is paid parking (garage) on the adjacent street but you must ask the front desk to unlock the garage each time you go in or out. While the evening desk clerks were slightly more friendly, the aforementioned day desk clerk always seemed to begrudge any request like this made to him. In sum, I would never recommend or return to this property and urge you to seek lodging elsewhere. Almost any place would undoubtedly be better than the Gradlon,
