We stayed one night as we were in town for some leaf-peeping and the Frontier Culture Museum (which was fantastic). Our family had stayed at this property about six or seven years ago and had enjoyed the pool in summer and there were no cleanliness or maintenance issues that I remember, so we booked in again (without reading reviews). The staff was friendly enough at check in, but given the reviews we had read, we checked the cleanliness of the sheets. They were laundered, but old and had stains that would have come out with better bleaching. Since we were only staying a night and in a hurry to get to a dinner with our friends, we did not bother to ask for the beds to be remade. The floor lamp did not light, and that was an easy fix--it was unplugged, but in the course of plugging it in, I observed the dirt and dust bunnies in the corner and a dead bug. My son said he thought he saw a roach or waterbug, but that was the only bug sighting--thank goodness. The room had a musty smell. The tub and toilet were clean but had hard water stains that likely could have been removed by LimeAway or scrubbing with pumice. There were dust bunnies under the bureau and desk. (Clearly, housekeeping had been careless.) Not great, but not worth changing a room, as we had the last ground floor nonsmoking room and did not want to have to go up to another floor. The hot water situation was not great in the morning. The tub needed to be recaulked and there was paint peeling on the bathroom door that should have been sanded an retouched. I don't recall these maintenance or cleanliness issues the last time I stayed at this HoJos. The continental breakfast was OK, but nothing special. For one night, it was barely adequate, but I likely will stay elsewhere next time I stay in Staunton, as I expect a cleaner, better maintained room when I am paying over $100 a night.
