Dancing Bear Lodge was lovely and quite luxurious in a rustic sort of way. There are 38 dispersed cabins of various sizes on the hilly site. Dogs are allowed in some of them. Each one is well-equipped; ours had a small kitchenette with sink, microwave and coffee maker, together with plates, cups, wine glasses and cutlery for 2. There was ground coffee in a jar and real cream in the mini-refrigerator. We had both a fireplace and a hot tub, as well as a porch with a swing. Both the closet and bathroom were spacious. The Appalachian Bistro on-site served pretty sophisticated food and apparently is a destination dining spot for folks in the surrounding communities. There was a Hallmark movie being filmed in the cabin across the road from ours one evening while we were there. Breakfast was the weak point; they gave us coupons for breakfast each day which could be used at the on-premises coffee house for a coffee and muffins or at the cafe at the base of the hill for pancakes or eggs, bacon & home-made biscuit. No fruit, granola, or yogurt. In-room housekeeping is only provided on request. You are given a card for each day of your stay on which you can request supplies and services. You are asked to post it on the door of your cabin for them to pick up before 11 am each day. On our first morning, they forgot to pick it up, so nothing we asked for was done. I brought this to their attention on our second morning. I got an apologetic note and, in addition, 2 housekeepers changed the sheets, gave us a lot of fresh towels and soap. In addition, the housekeeping manager stopped by in the late afternoon to accept responsibility for the oversight and offer his apology as well. That was nice. One other thing happened: upon our return home, my spouse discovered he'd left behind a small bag containing electronics accessories (earbuds, firewires, etc. ). He emailed the Lodge office to ask if they found it and got a quick phone call in reply that they had it and would be happy to send it to him (at his expense, naturally). We think it would be nice to go back sometime for a 3- night stay in autumn when the leaves are turning.
