Our (attempted) stay at The O Spa and Resort was a complete disaster. The day before our stay, we called to request an early check-in. Rick informed us that while we couldn’t check in before 4:00 PM, we could arrive at noon and hang around the pool until our room was ready. However, when we arrived at 11:45 AM and called Rick, his response was that we were “really freaking early.” He provided the door code, and we entered the resort. While the grounds were relatively nice, there was no shaded area over the pool except for two umbrellas, both occupied by other guests. There were other shaded areas, but they were unmarked, leaving us unsure if they were rental cabanas or available for everyone’s use. With no staff on the grounds to ask and not wanting to bother Rick, who was already irritated, we decided to Uber to another resort for the day. We returned at 4 PM, still without any check-in information. After calling the number on the door, we were texted a room code but not the room number. When we finally got the room number and entered, we were horrified to find two other guests asleep on the bed. Intruding on another guest’s privacy is not our idea of a “friendly encounter,” and had they been awake, we would have been extremely apologetic. With no staff on site, we called the hotel again. The manager arrived about 10 minutes later, but instead of addressing us, we overheard him rudely trying to kick some other guests out of their room. It became clear that he was doing this to accommodate us. Deeply disturbed by what had already transpired, we confronted him, asking how many guests would have to suffer due to his lack of organization and poor people skills. His response made us feel as though we were being unappreciative of his efforts. We left and had to make emergency arrangements for the night on Labor Day weekend. Only after we left did he send an apologetic text message, claiming the people in the original room were a confused elderly woman who had been staying for a few additional days. This doesn’t add up—if he knew this to be the case, why would he give us the room code? Were we supposed to share the room with her? This guy isn’t even good at lying.
