Berto and Loli are amazing hosts and despite arriving too early when guests had just finished breakfast, Berto insisted I join him for breakfast as he was having his. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten such delicious deep red tomatoes. Most rooms are shared but I had a private room with a shared bathroom. Sometimes there are 9 people to the one bathroom but it wasn’t a problem as everything was very clean. The communal meal in the evening was homemade and delicious, with mostly pilgrims but a few workers who joined us as well and it was very convivial. We had a wonderful meat and noodle soup followed by chicken legs stew, tomato salad and bread, followed by fruit. Plenty of nice local wine too. I shared my apple with Berho’s beautiful white stallion who allowed me to touch him - such a special memory. The house is in a lovely rustic setting in a friendly village. There’s a nice bar nearby for a cafe con leche, perfect. You can get a bus from the square in El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino to Zamora and in between villages. As the name implies, this is wine country and worth trying the local wines.
