Auckland Art Gallery • Architectural style: The main building is in French Renaissance style. After being renovated by FJMT+Archimedia, new tree-like canopies and other designs were added to incorporate natural elements and blur the lines between interior and exterior. • Spatial Layout: Entering from the street forecourt, through a lower foyer, a wide staircase to a spacious light-filled atrium, the gallery circulation extends from the main atrium and connects all gallery spaces through the South Atrium. • Building function: It houses a large collection of New Zealand and international art, has multiple exhibition spaces, the McCormick Research Library, as well as facilities such as cafes and shops. Auckland local residential architecture • Victorian style: introduced during the British colonial period in the 19th century, the buildings have sloping roofs, decorative gables, carved wooden balconies and exquisite door and window frames, etc. The manor house in Howick Historic Village is a representative example. • Deco style: Popularised in the 1930s due to reconstruction after the Napier earthquake, it features geometric shapes, clean lines and Art Deco elements, such as the Auckland Theatre. • Modern style: simple shape, emphasis on space utilization and natural lighting, and extensive use of materials such as glass, steel and concrete. It is more common in Auckland's new towns and suburbs. • Maori style: Traditional Maori architecture is mainly made of natural materials such as wood and flax. The exterior of the building has unique carvings and decorations that reflect Maori culture and traditions, such as the meeting house (Wharenui). In modern times, some Maori style elements have also been incorporated into residential building designs.
