Alpe di Siusi is one of the largest mountain resorts in Europe and once the soft winter snow melts, mountain bike routes begin to emerge. Covering 13,800 acres (5,600 hectares), the vast plateau is known for nearly 800 species of plants, picturesque backcountry roads, and endless snowy vistas, where visitors can ski or snowboard on the slopes of the large resort. Children and beginners can take skiing lessons on the easier slopes, and there are more than a dozen runs for kids to sled. You can go snowshoeing with friends through the Ciamin Valley, watch or take part in the challenging Sellaronda Skimarathon night ski mountaineering race, and Alpine Resort Susi offers ski and snowboard rentals. You can also enjoy the beautiful scenery and tranquil atmosphere by taking the mountain cable car up the mountain. In summer, visitors can hike through the rocky terrain, bike up and down the rolling hills, and enjoy the stunning Alpine scenery. Browse the local bars and souvenir shops, and enjoy a South Tyrolean dinner at one of the town’s restaurants, including apple strudel, bright orange Aperol cocktails, and specknödel (dough dumplings). In the nearby village of Castelrotto, check out the modern dove-shaped church of San Francesco, dotted with snow, or the quaint community of Siusi and Tires al Catinaccio. As the snow melts in May, visitors can enjoy the return of bright colors to the countryside, with yellow, purple and blue flowers decorating the rolling green hills, and heading south to the scenic trails of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park. Visitors should note that each community has both an Italian and a German name due to its proximity to southern Austria and the merger of the two communities centuries ago. The ski season is from early December to early April. Alpe di Susi is located in the province of Bolzano in the Dolomites in northern Italy.
