Hanging Temple of Hengshan, Hunyuan, Shanxi

The Hanging Temple is located on the west side of the Golden Dragon Gorge of Hengshan in Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi Province, nestled between the sheer cliffs of Cuiping Peak. The entire temple appears to be suspended on the cliffside, walking on it is so thrilling that it makes one's feet go weak and afraid to proceed. Although the temple has been reinforced for safety in later periods, the psychological barrier still exists. The Hanging Temple was initially built during the late Northern Wei Dynasty (491 AD) and has a history of over 1,500 years. It is a unique temple that integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The architecture of the 'Hanging Temple' is extremely distinctive, and there is a colloquial saying, 'The Hanging Temple, high as half the sky, with three horse tails hanging in the air,' known for its precipitousness as if facing an abyss.
