Manabeshima Cat Island

Manabeshima, along with Megijima, is also known as the male and female islands, where Megijima is commonly referred to as the 'Oni Island' and is the legendary island where Momotaro fought the demons. Manabeshima is known as 'Cat Island'. Since the boat to Manabeshima must first pass by Megijima, many tourists combine the two islands into a one-day trip. Manabeshima has an area of about 4 square kilometers with a population of less than 200 people, and approximately 100 cats. Compared to other cat islands, the feline presence is more scattered, as the saying goes, 'just three or four kittens', and even though the cats of Manabeshima do not swarm in groups, they are as affectionate as the cats on Sanagijima and are also very popular for not being 'no food no touch'. Besides being famous for its cats, Manabeshima is also part of the triennial Setouchi Triennale art festival and is known for its artistic atmosphere. Since the first art festival, Manabeshima has become a site for art installations, which are scattered around the island for discovery. Many art pieces also utilize the local abandoned houses for revitalization, which not only preserves the ancient architecture but also keeps it grounded, earning praise. Additionally, due to the island's mostly mountainous terrain, the buildings are almost all built along the slopes, creating winding and undulating alleys and ports, which not only adds an atmosphere of exploration but also gives the residential houses themselves a unique artistic vibe.
