Kamakura's Top 3 Flower Viewing Spots: Hydrangea Path at Hase-dera Temple

Located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Hase-dera Temple is not only home to Japan's largest wooden statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon, but is also known as the 'Western Pure Land of Kamakura' due to its year-round blooming flowers. Hase-dera Temple began planting hydrangeas in the early Heisei era, with a history of over 30 years and more than 40 varieties. During the peak season, about 2,500 hydrangea plants bloom simultaneously. Every June, the hydrangeas mainly bloom along the 'Ajisai Path' on the temple's small hillside. Climbing the hydrangea-lined steps to the high platform offers a panoramic view of Kamakura City and a glimpse of the sea! This makes it a popular spot for tourists during the hydrangea season, so it gets very crowded. The hillside offers a spectacular view of the densely blooming hydrangeas.
