Kinkaku-ji Temple

Kinkakuji, officially known as Rokuonji, is located in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The temple's main attraction is the Golden Pavilion. The Golden Pavilion was originally built in 1397 as a residence for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Later, his son converted it into a Rinzai Zen temple. The temple was burned down several times during the Onin War. The Golden Pavilion inspired Yoshimitsu's grandson to build a temple in 1994. Rokuonji, including the Golden Pavilion, has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with other important sites in Kyoto. The entire Golden Pavilion, except for the basement, is covered with pure gold sheets. It houses Buddha statues and other valuable relics.
