2024 Kyoto Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Kyoto is an ancient city with over a thousand years of history. Before the Meiji Emperor moved the capital to Tokyo, it was the traditional home of the Japanese royal family. After thousands of years, from legends of ghosts and gods to history and culture, the air and atmosphere in Kyoto is filled with a great mystical charm. When Kyoto was constructed, its street layout and architecture was influenced by the style of Chang’an, and it still retains the same ancient charm. In the Higashiyama District, temples, shrines and altars embody the spiritual side to Kyoto, while the area around Arashiyama carries a classical and elegant atmosphere. No visit to Kyoto would be complete without a taste of traditional delicacies, a stroll along the flowered paths, or a fascinating geisha show.

Half Day Kimono Itinerary (Kyoto)
Wearing a kimono is a beautiful experience. Here’s my suggested itinerary for your comfort, with everything within walking distance: 🌸
We arrived at the Kimono rental shop at 9am for Kimono dressing and hairdo. Makeup is NOT included in the package. Last call to return the Kimono is at 5:30pm. ⚠️
📍Ninenzaka 二年坂 and Sannenzaka 三年坂: These ancient cobblestone streets have thrived since 808 AD. They pay homage to Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who climbed these steps in prayer for a healthy child
📍 Yasaka Pagoda 八坂の塔: Built by Prince Shotoku in 589 AD, Yasaka Pagoda was brought to life by a dream-inspired vision.
📍 Kodaiji 高台寺: In 1605, Nene built Kodaiji as a heartfelt tribute to her late husband. ⚠️ Don’t miss the serene bamboo grove that often goes unnoticed by many! ⚠️
📍 Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺: Kiyomizu-dera is known for its iconic wooden terrace, which was built without a single nail. The popular Japanese expresion “To jump off the stage at Kiyomizu”, refers to an Edo-period tradition where brave individuals would leap from the 13-meter high wooden terrace to have their wish granted (IF they survive the fall)!
📍 Yasaka Jinja 八坂神社: Founded over 1350 years ago, Yasaka Jinja is renowned for its summer festival, the Gion Matsuri, celebrated annually in July.

A Hidden Gem in Kyoto 🌿
#goingplaces
Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple in Kyoto is a hidden gem, known for its enchanting collection of over 1,200 stone rakan statues—each with unique, often humorous expressions. Situated in the serene Arashiyama area, this lesser-known temple offers a peaceful contrast to Kyoto’s more crowded spots.
Originally founded in the 8th century, Otagi Nenbutsuji was later rebuilt after natural disasters, and the stone statues were added in the 1980s by worshippers and sculptors under the guidance of the temple’s head priest, who aimed to create a place of joyful reverence.

Kyoto Night Itinerary Recommendation: Kyoto Station Conveyor Belt Sushi and Yasaka Shrine!
This time, I took the Shinkansen to Kyoto. First, I went to the Kyoto Underground Shopping Mall to try a famous conveyor belt sushi restaurant (Sushi no Musashi - Kyoto Station Hachijo Entrance). The sushi at this restaurant is very fresh, and there are various chefs preparing different dishes in the middle of the conveyor belt. Prices range from 100 yen to 1000 yen! If you love sushi, you should definitely give it a try when you arrive at Kyoto Station! The restaurant has limited seating, so it's recommended to line up early!
After enjoying the sushi, I went to Yasaka Shrine⛩️! It is located on the main street of Kyoto City, Shijo-dori. I highly recommend the night view of this shrine. It lights up at night, making it a popular spot for photos! It has a special traditional Japanese cultural feel!
I suggest visiting these two places when you come to Kyoto!

The sound of the flowing Takase River adds a touch of Zen to the hotel. The design of the hotel blends traditional Kyoto style with modern minimalism. Explore another must-see spot when visiting Kyoto: the Kamo River. This river stretches through the city of Kyoto and is a popular gathering place for both tourists and locals who often stroll along its banks in the evening.
On both sides of the river, there are scattered shops and cafes, making it a popular hangout for Kyoto's youth. The atmosphere is wonderful, especially during the autumn foliage season when the view is absolutely stunning.
An enchanting moment at Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
#closetonature #100waysoftravel
While visiting Kyoto we had a chance to visit the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, which is located near the Tenryuji area. This forest has had a very long history of being the zen area for many temples, and the there are tens of thousands of Bamboo shoots there, and you.might see from the picture. The aplenty tall Bamboo trees makes the place a very serene and quiet area to stroll, but please visit there as early as possible and during weekdays, as the crowd might go piling up during weekends and on later days. I was there at 8.30am, so definitely I do not have to get myself stucked with so many tourists, allowing me the enjoy this serendipity.
Hidden Gems in Kyoto, Japan
This time, let's share some hidden gems in Kyoto by the Sea - Minazuki Shrine and Tsukibashi Bridge.
We stayed at the Seikasoen, a hot spring hotel in Yuhigaura Onsen.
On the day we drove from downtown Kyoto, we made a special stop at Minazuki Shrine.
This place is not well-known among tourists, so it's not crowded.
Tsukibashi Bridge is beautiful and resembles a little Venice.
The shrine is also free from crowds,
giving a very relaxing feeling.
I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary if you are driving or have a private car. 👍
Legendary Red Pillar Temple in Kyoto!
Fushimi Inari Shrine, also known as the Red Pillar Temple or Fox Shrine, is a well-known destination among tourists.
The highlight is the tens of thousands of red pillars lined up behind the shrine. Additionally, there are statues of the fox deity, which is a symbol of this place.
Around the entrance to the temple, there are many shops lined up, creating a pleasant atmosphere. If you visit Kyoto, you must not miss this place.
Kyoto Daigoji Temple: A Blend of Autumn Leaves and History
This visit to Kyoto's Daigoji Temple coincided with the famous autumn foliage season. In early autumn, the maple trees at Daigoji Temple are adorned with brilliant reds and oranges, creating a beautiful picture.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kyoto's Daigoji Temple was built in 874 AD and is closely linked to Japan's history and culture. Its beauty comes not only from its natural scenery but also from its long history and architectural artistry. It is said that Daigoji Temple had close ties with the imperial family during the Heian period. The emperor of that time often came here for quiet retreats, enjoying the beauty of nature. One autumn, the emperor admired the maple leaves here, feeling deeply moved by their beauty and the changing seasons. Inspired, he composed a poem praising the transformations of nature. This poem has been passed down through the ages, becoming a cherished story of Daigoji Temple.
As we stroll under the maple trees, feeling the tranquility and beauty, it seems as if we have returned to the emperor's era, lost in the poetic and picturesque autumn scenery.
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s top sights and for good reason: standing amid these soaring stalks of bamboo is like being in another world.
Tt’s one of the most photographed sights in the city.
But no picture can capture the feeling of standing in the midst of this sprawling bamboo grove – the whole thing has a palpable sense of otherness that is quite unlike that of any normal forest we know of.

Most celebrated temple of Japan - Kiyomizudera
Kiyomizudera (清水寺, literally "Pure Water Temple") is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan.
It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto and derives its name from the fall's waters.
The temple was originally associated with the Hosso sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism, but formed its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965.
In 1994, the temple was added to the list of World Heritage Sites.

An Afternoon Shower at Kiyomizu-dera: A Serene Journey
The sudden afternoon shower made us linger a bit longer on the Kiyomizu stage. Listening to the rapid raindrops hitting the umbrella and the hurried footsteps of people seeking shelter under the eaves, it felt like a joyful gathering.
At the same time, the air was filled with the fresh scent of soil and damp leaves. The stone steps became slippery, adding a touch of mystery and tranquility to the ancient temple and the surrounding forest. Watching the wooden structure of the distant temple appear and disappear in the rain, we could quietly appreciate this historical sanctuary, as if time had turned back, allowing us to experience the harmony of this land with ancient Zen practitioners.
After the rain cleared, we walked to Otowa Waterfall, where the sound of the spring water became even clearer, as if the raindrops had washed away the dust of the world. The fresh air carried a hint of sweetness, and the spring water flowed gently between the rocks like a soft melody, a pure gift from nature. It is said that drinking this spring water brings health, wisdom, and longevity. At that moment, we took a sip, feeling its coolness and sweetness, and our hearts were filled with tranquility and gratitude.

During my visit to Kyoto, I stumbled upon the Kyoto Railway Museum, and it quickly became one of the highlights of my trip! The entrance fee was around 1,200 yen (about $10), which felt like a bargain for the experience. The museum features a fantastic collection of trains, from vintage steam locomotives to modern Shinkansen, and you can even hop inside some of them! The interactive exhibits were a hit, especially for kids, and I loved learning about the history of rail travel in Japan.
After exploring the museum, I took a stroll through the nearby Umekoji Park, which was lovely for a picnic. If you’re a train enthusiast or just curious about Japan’s railway history, this museum is a must-see!

Kyoto Eikando - A Prime Spot to Enjoy the Charm of Autumn Leaves
Many friends, like me, choose popular spots such as Kiyomizu-dera, Ginkaku-ji, or Togetsukyo Bridge when visiting Kyoto to admire the autumn leaves. However, upon the recommendation of my sister's friend (who has visited Kyoto over ten times), we went to another famous spot for autumn leaves in Kyoto last year - Eikando.
We were very fortunate to visit during the peak week for autumn leaves, and the weather was perfect. Our group of four took a taxi directly to the entrance of Eikando. There were many people there to enjoy the autumn leaves, so if you take a taxi, be prepared to wait patiently in line to get off, but the wait isn't too long. After buying tickets, we entered Eikando, also known as Zenrin-ji. It is said that there are three thousand maple trees inside, which is quite a number. Combined with their Japanese-style design, you can follow their designated route to tour the buildings. Here, you can appreciate their meticulously designed gardens, where every tree, flower, and blade of grass is beautiful. Then, you will see a vast landscape with small bridges, ponds, and mountain views, along with continuous trees, resembling a colorful masterpiece. Many people take photos here, but the visitors are very polite and patient. Finally, you can get a close-up view of the autumn leaves and take photos in their back garden. Every spot here is a perfect photo opportunity, so don't miss it.
