Langzhong Ancient City, along with Pingyao in Shanxi, Lijiang in Yunnan, and Shexian in Anhui, is known as one of the 'four best-preserved ancient cities'. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, the city is within, hence the name 'Langzhong'. Over 2,300 years ago, it was a military stronghold of the ancient Ba and Shu states. Zhang Fei once served as the governor for seven years, stationed in Langzhong, and was eventually buried there. Later generations built the Huanhou Temple in his honor. The entire ancient city highlights Zhang Fei, especially the famous 'Zhang Fei Beef', which is a marinated and smoked beef. It is named for its black exterior and bright red interior, resembling Zhang Fei's image. These days, there are not many tourists, making it relatively quiet and comfortable to stroll around.
