Alfama is the oldest area in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and is located in the historical center of Lisbon. It belongs to the Santa Maria Maior district and faces the Tagus River. Alfama is densely packed with important historical landmarks, Fado houses, restaurants, and shops. There are also historical buildings with great views such as the São Jorge Castle, the Lisbon Cathedral built in the 12th century, the Graça Convent, and the Church of São Vicente de Fora, as well as the National Pantheon where famous figures in Portuguese history are buried. However, it is the narrow alleys traversed by trams that add even more charm to the place, so in addition to the monuments, I highly recommend exploring the neighborhood.
