Compared to Laomendong, this scenic spot in Nanjing only has a handful of visitors. The Ganxi Residence in Nanjing, also known as Ganxi's Former Residence or Gan Family Courtyard, was built during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. It is the largest and best-preserved private residence in Nanjing, commonly referred to as 'Ninety-nine and a half rooms.' It is also the largest and most complete ancient residential building in the major cities of China. Together with the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and the Ming City Wall, it is known as one of the three major Ming and Qing Dynasty scenic spots in Nanjing. The architectural features of the Ganxi Residence blend northern and southern styles, combining the delicate and elegant charm of southern residences, characterized by 'blue bricks, small tiles, horse head walls, and lattice windows,' with the grandeur of the northern 'running horse buildings.' The successive courtyards are very similar yet each has its own unique characteristics. Despite its location in a busy area, the residence usually sees few visitors, and each courtyard is very quiet. Now is the season when loquats are ripe. The yellow loquats on the courtyard walls, the green plants, and the mottled light and shadows on the walls form a stunningly beautiful Chinese painting! This place is also home to the Nanjing Folk Museum, where many traditional handicrafts such as Yunjin brocade, velvet flowers, paper-cutting, and gourd painting can be seen.
