Nanjing Museum

History The predecessor of Nanjing Museum was the National Central Museum, which was built in 1933 at the initiative of Mr. Cai Yuanpei, who served as the first chairman of the board of directors. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was renamed the National Nanjing Museum in March 1950. The directors of the museum since its establishment are Xu Pingyu, Zeng Zhaoyu, Yao Qian, Liang Baiquan, Xu Huping, and Gong Liang. Architectural features The architectural layout of Nanjing Museum reflects the concept of "gold inlaid with jade, treasures hidden within", with both traditional elements and modern atmosphere, which are harmoniously integrated and complement each other. The main hall is simple, solemn, majestic, and magnificent, and has become a landmark historical and cultural landscape in Nanjing. It is now a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit. Exhibition overview The "One Museum, Six Galleries" of Nanjing Museum has its own focus, including the History Gallery, Digital Gallery, Republic of China Gallery, Art Gallery, Special Exhibition Gallery, and Intangible Cultural Heritage Gallery. The History Gallery has a permanent exhibition of "Ancient Civilization of Jiangsu", and the Art Gallery displays the treasures of the museum's collection according to the texture of the artworks; the Special Exhibition Gallery focuses on creating first-class boutique exhibitions; the Intangible Cultural Heritage Gallery displays the national intangible cultural heritage projects of Jiangsu Province in a dynamic way; the Republic of China Gallery focuses on displaying the social life and customs of the capital Nanjing during the Republic of China period; the Digital Gallery combines network technology and on-site interaction to bring a new experience of ancient civilization to the audience. Visitor information • Tickets: Free, but reservations are required in advance. • Opening hours: Monday 9:00–12:00 (last admission at 11:00), Tuesday–Sunday 9:00–17:00 (last admission at 16:00).
