Penghu Tianhou Temple

Located in Penghu, Tianhou Temple is dedicated to Mazu and was built in 1604, making it the oldest Mazu temple in Taiwan. With a history of over 400 years, Penghu Tianhou Temple has always been the core of local belief. The temple houses the 'Shen You-Rong's Edict to Repel the Red-Haired Barbarians' stele, which is not only known as 'the oldest stele in Taiwan' but also proves that this temple is the oldest Mazu temple in Taiwan. During the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Kangxi bestowed the title 'Tianhou' upon Mazu and awarded a 'golden face'. The old name of Magong City, 'Magon', also highlights the historical significance of Penghu Tianhou Temple. This temple is regarded as an artistic treasure, with its architectural style, gilded paintings, stone carvings, wood carvings, engravings, and paintings all crafted by master artisans, showcasing the outstanding achievements of folk art.
