Am Teng Kong (Shrine of Light of Dharma)

This shrine is the oldest Chinese shrine in Phuket. Since it is the shrine of the Tan family, the shrine is not very large. The highlight of this shrine is its Chinese architectural design, with dragon stucco and dolls decorating the roof. The shrine building itself is painted red, which is an auspicious color according to Chinese beliefs. Inside the shrine, there is a sign that has been hanging for about 92 years, which reads “Sacred power protects”, and the signs hanging on both sides of the altar table were built for about 95 years. Inside the shrine, there are many statues of Chinese deities for visitors to worship, including Lord Sun Tai Sai, who is the head of this shrine, and Lord Tan Seng Ong, who is a deity that the Tan family, the owners of this shrine, have worshipped since their ancestors. Inside the shrine, there are also murals that tell stories of Chinese history, including the story of Xi Yin Gui, which is considered a true work of art using Chinese art. The characters and lines that appear natural, are beautiful and graceful. The characters’ appearances are unique, such as Xi Yin Gui, who is a strong, tall young man wearing white armor and carrying a spear as his weapon. There are also many black and white paintings and shadows that are about 100 years old, such as paintings of guardian angels, angels of birth, angels of death, and dragon-patterned plaques. This shrine is another beautiful piece of architecture and old paintings in Phuket.
