Jingmai Mountain▲ Travel Tips Only Locals Will Tell You
Jingmai Mountain
Yunnan's Puer Jingmai Mountain, with its thousand-year-old ancient tea forests and villages, boasts stunning sea of clouds and sunrises and sunsets. There are 9 villages in Jingmai Mountain applying for World Heritage status: Dongben, Manggeng, Jingmai Dazhai, Nuogang (also called Nuogan), Manghong, Mangjing Upper and Lower Village, Wengji, Wengwa.
Firstly, don't rush when visiting Jingmai Mountain; if you do, you'll miss its charm, as if you just circled around the mountain.
If you're short on time, a two-day trip can be arranged. If you have more time, consider staying a few more days. Visit in December or January to see the mountain cherry blossoms. In April, the spring tea is on the market, and there are grand festivals of the Blang and Dai ethnic groups.
Transportation to Jingmai Mountain is not very convenient; you can choose to drive yourself or hire a car. It takes about 3 hours to drive from Puer, and after entering the mountain, there is a 20-kilometer gravel road that is very bumpy (to protect the tea mountain's ecology, no asphalt has been laid), so slow down to avoid tire blowouts. There are checkpoints when entering and exiting the mountain, so make sure to check the items in the car when renting.
Homestays are built by locals themselves. Some hosts, who usually do business outside, may be more commercialized, while others live in the village and revolve around tea planting, picking, and processing. These homestays are very homely; you'll eat corn and such grown in their own fields, and drink their own tea. The hosts are simple and sincere, and the tea processing workshop is also next to the homestay. If you want to visit or experience it, the host will introduce it enthusiastically. The villages are far from the county town, so if you're picky, prepare your own toiletries.
The food in the village is very simple, all home-cooked dishes: clear soup with free-range chicken, stir-fried tea leaves with eggs, stir-fried cured meat are all quite delicious. You can usually eat at the homestay, but you should tell the host in advance how many people there are.
If you want to see the Tea King Tree, it's best to have a local, preferably the homestay host, lead you there. Do not pick tea leaves at random by the roadside; locals do not like it, and fresh tea leaves cannot be consumed immediately. The host's home always has a tea room where you can taste all kinds of tea.
The temperature difference between day and night on Jingmai Mountain is quite significant, so be sure to bring spare clothes.
Each village has its own characteristics, and the tea is different. If you ask me how to plan your route, I can only say that you have to experience it yourself to understand the feeling of 'being in the midst of the mountains'.
Jingmai Mountain has five cultivated ancient tea forests
Jingmai Mountain/Wengji Tribe Jingmai Mountain has five cultivated ancient tea forests, mainly distributed between altitudes of 1140-1600 meters, covering an area of over a thousand hectares. The indigenous people of Jingmai Mountain have wisely utilized the rainforest ecosystem to provide a favorable environment for the growth of tea trees, and the traditional method of planting tea under the forest has continued to this day. The Wengji is a traditional Bulang ethnic village that has preserved its original appearance. Generations of the Bulang people have lived in bamboo and wood structures. Ancient traditional houses still have Dendrobium growing on the roofs, and the eaves feature totems symbolizing the 'one bud, two leaves' of tea, reflecting the deep connection between tea and the Bulang people in the ancient Wengji Bulang village.
Jingmai Mountain Tea Horse Ancient Cellar, modern architecture achieves a ten-thousand-ton intelligent tea cellar storage space!
The modern architecture in Jingmai Mountain - Tea Horse Ancient Cellar, strives to become the world's first ten-thousand-ton intelligent tea cellar storage space.
The project's architecture and interior design are led by Aman's royal design team - MASASTUDIO. The building's facade and interior use local stone and hand-carved textures, and the furnishings and details inside all demonstrate quality.
The project is related to the Aman Hotel in Jingmai Mountain, and the Aman North Tea House is already open for visitors to enjoy tea tasting. However, the Aman Hotel project in Jingmai Mountain is not progressing as quickly, with the earliest construction not expected until 2026, which seems quite far off.
Mangjing Village | Mangjing Dai Village
❥ The first village you enter from the Pu'er direction into Jingmai Mountain is Mangjing, which is located on the northeast side of Jingmai Mountain and is a Dai ethnic village. The overall architecture of the village is in the Dai style, with the village layout on the north side of the ridge line adjacent to the mountain. The buildings are arranged from south to north, descending layer by layer, all with a heart-picking layout centered on the heart shape.
❥ Mangjing village is composed of the Mangjing community, and the center of the village is formed by the adjacent Sadi Temple, village heart, and Sadi Tomb. There are attractions such as Dai village, Sadi Temple, Sadi Well, Golden Water Pond, Ant Hill, Jingmai Fragrance Workshop, and Hand-in-Hand Fortune. This is a tourism-oriented village with a focus on cultural travel of Jingmai Fragrance Workshop.

Qiangan Ancient Village Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
Yunnan Offbeat | First Encounter and Delightful Guide to Nuogan Ancient Village after Rain
In the Jingmai Mountain of Lancang
There is an ancient village called Nuogan
The village is simple and quiet
Each household makes a living by tea planting
The whole village is not big
Now there are less than 300 households left
It's one of the well-preserved original ancient villages in China without commercialization, which is really rare
The Jingmai Mountain where the village is located is also applying for intangible cultural heritage
Liu Haoran's movie 'One Point Straight Home' was also filmed here. This village is really my favorite among all the ancient villages I have visited. I want to stay here for a month doing nothing
I went there in mid-February
The whole Jingmai Mountain was already full of flowers. Actually, it's most beautiful to go there in March and April
At this time, you can also experience tea picking
Finally, some practical information: How to get there: You can choose to drive or take a bus. The overall road condition of Jingmai Mountain is asphalt road, but there are many winding mountain roads and bends. Be careful of oncoming vehicles when turning.
How to shoot: The day I went happened to be a rainy day, so the photos taken have a very special feel. The rain turned the eaves into a deep blue color. The main shooting location is on the main road when you enter Nuogan Ancient Village. You can also go to the roof of a local Dai family's house to shoot, which is also very photogenic.
When shooting, be sure to pay attention to exposure, do not overexpose
◆How to edit photos: You can edit towards dark and blue tones, with the highlights leaning towards blue and the shadows leaning towards blue-green
◆How to play:
It is recommended to control the duration of the visit to two days and one night
On the first day, you can stay in the neighboring Wengji Ancient Village, and play in each village for an afternoon
In Wengji Ancient Village, you can see the sea of clouds in the parking lot, and both the village gate and the village center are suitable for check-in. Remember to try the local corn wine and lemongrass grilled fish~
A lesser-known travel destination in Yunnan, a village with a history of over a thousand years
Nuogan Ancient Village, this Dai minority ancient village has a history of over a thousand years, not many people know about it, and even fewer have visited.
-
Just left, and I'm already missing it.
-
I especially like the village in the morning and evening, the air seems to carry the fragrance of tea leaves, with the occasional bark of a dog, it feels like my heart has been cleansed.
-
The environment here is beautiful, with good ecology. Surrounded by mountains, there is an open basin in the middle, the 'Nuogan' in the village name means 'pond' in the ethnic language, and 'gan' means 'deer', so Nuogan means a place where deer come to drink.
-
Ancient tea trees are scattered around Nuogan Ancient Village, and within the village, there are scattered ancient dwellings and temples, preserving a relatively complete Dai culture and the original ancient village appearance.
-
The Dai people here have been living with tea for generations, forming a unique and ancient Dai culture.
-
A village that you don't want to leave once you arrive, existing like a peaceful haven, quiet, comfortable, and cozy.

You ask if there's anything fun? It doesn't seem like it. It's just eating and drinking, watching the villagers do farm work every day, learning some local songs, and listening to them chat in their language. Although I can't understand a thing, it doesn't stop me from laughing along with them. These seemingly insignificant moments are all so healing✨

Jingmai Mountain | Wengji Ancient Village
❥ Wengji Ancient Village, an ancient village of the Blang people, is regarded as a microcosm of the Blang ethnic group. It is celebrated as the 'Millennium Blang Ancient Village' because it has preserved the Blang's original ecological culture and historical heritage. The village boasts beautiful natural scenery and prominent ethnic cultural features.
❥ The Blang people are one of the earliest ancestors in China and one of the oldest indigenous residents in Yunnan history. Their ancestors, the ancient Pu people, were among the first in the world to discover and utilize wild tea leaves and were also among the first in Yunnan to cultivate and plant tea. Today, they still rely on tea planting and production for their livelihood and are known as 'ancient tea farmers'.
❥ Entering the village, it seems that every household has tea leaves in front of their doors. Tea is their main source of economic income. Besides drinking, it is also used for cooking and even as a common herbal medicine by locals. The roofs of the houses in the village are decorated with patterns of one bud and two leaves, representing the totem of the Blang people. Walking down from the ancient temple, there are many tea shops on both sides of the road. No matter which tea shop you go to, the owner will warmly invite you in for tea. The sign 'Free Tea Tasting' can be seen everywhere in the village, and almost every household has a tea pavilion to entertain tea merchants and tourists from all over.
❥ The architectural style of Wengji Ancient Village is not much different from that of Nuogan Ancient Village, with the same dry-column structure, mostly two-story buildings with the ground floor elevated. The sloping roofs are covered with traditional hanging tiles. However, because Wengji has developed tourism earlier, most of the ground floors of the houses are used as shops. The roads in the village are paved with stone slabs, extending in all directions. Although there are chickens and ducks around, it is cleaner and less dusty. The Blang people prefer bright colors, and their clothing and decorations are colorful and pleasing to the eye.
❥ The Blang people believe in Theravada Buddhism, and the ancient temples are places where Theravada Buddhism is taught. The temples, with their stone-built bases, wide eaves, and broad ridges, the city towers with black tiles and red walls, and the red stone Qilin facing angrily to both sides, serve as both a sanctuary for the residents and a meeting room for the clan. They believe that all things have spirits, such as the spirit of the mountains, trees, rivers, etc. Therefore, the Blang people have a rich variety of sacrificial activities.
❥ Wengji Ancient Village is located at the northern end of Jingmai Mountain, at an altitude of about 1350 meters. Situated on high ground, the village offers views of the sea of clouds and other villages such as Mangjing Upper Village, Mangjing Lower Village, and Manghong. When we arrived, it was the beginning of the temperature drop on Jingmai Mountain, and it was near evening. It didn't feel cold in the car, but once we reached the village, we realized how cold it was and the wind was strong, which made us give up our plan to have dinner in Wengji Ancient Village. We took a quick tour around the village and left in a hurry. Currently, the accommodations and dining on Jingmai Mountain are mainly concentrated in Wengji, with relatively complete facilities and not highly commercialized.

Puer Jingmai Mountain | A hidden paradise that urban dwellers don't want to leave once they visit
⛰️ Jingmai Mountain is located in Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, China, and is one of the six famous tea mountains in China, known for its ancient tea trees and unique tea culture. The mountain is shrouded in mist and covered with tea trees, making it one of the important production areas for Pu'er tea. This mountain, with its long history and rich cultural heritage, successfully applied for intangible cultural heritage last year.

4️⃣ Xishuangbanna Gasa Airport (133 km, 3 hours by car)
🏠 Accommodation
You can stay in a hotel at the foot of the mountain, or experience a homestay on the mountain. We decided to go there temporarily during the Spring Festival this year, so we didn't book a room, but if you can stay on the mountain, watching the sunrise over the sea of clouds, experiencing the sunset glow, savoring a pot of high-mountain ancient tea, gazing at the full moon over the mountain top, experiencing the ancient mountain culture and daily rhythm, letting go of all thoughts and anxieties, and connecting closely with nature, it must feel amazing. Definitely want to experience it next time.
🍚 Food
There are many farmhouses on the mountain where you can have a taste. The cuisine of the Yunnan minorities is mainly spicy, but you can communicate in advance for less spicy or non-spicy options. The taste is very good, with an average cost of about 80 yuan per person.
🍵 Tea Tasting
After going up the mountain, you are drinking all the way, even before meals the owner will invite you to taste tea. You can find a favorite scenic spot and shop to experience the local tea culture, from clear tea to milk tea to roasted tea, there is always one that you will like.
🏞️ Attractions
We drove from Menglian to Jingmai Mountain, which took about 3 hours, and then went up to the scenic area. There are many villages in the scenic area, such as Mangjing Village and Jingmai Village, but the most famous are Wengji Ancient Village and Nuogan Ancient Village, so we visited these two, as well as the ancient tea gardens and temples
1️⃣ Wengji Ancient Village (Blang ethnicity):
Featuring Blang ethnic culture, the village is small and can be walked from end to end, with many tea shops suitable for tea tasting and enjoying the view
2️⃣ Nuogan Ancient Village (Dai ethnicity):
Featuring Dai ethnic culture, it was too crowded when we went, so we didn't take many photos, but it felt great, and we definitely want to avoid holidays and experience it properly next time.
3️⃣ Ancient Tea Garden: See the thousand-year-old tea garden spanning ten thousand acres, a place that resonates with history and the past. It has been 1800 years and is known as the 'Natural Museum of Tea Trees'.

Yunnan! It's so magical, it feels like a hotel in the clouds
It feels like a shop in the clouds, with a fairyland in the morning mist, and like an alien base when the clouds disperse.
The entire hotel is built on a mountain, with a broad view and a stilt house design, resembling a space capsule. Next to it is an ancient Lahu village on the edge of Yunnan, a very primitive and passionate place, which is the heritage site of the intangible cultural heritage, the Lahu's oral epic 'Mupa Mipa', and also the place where 'Happy Lahu' is sung — Lao Da. You can also visit the Huan Lao Da Bao Lao Village to experience the rustic charm and check in at the ancient Jingmai Mountain tea forest, which spans thousands of acres over a thousand years.
The rooms here have private viewing terraces and large floor-to-ceiling windows. Here, you can enjoy the breeze and listen to the rain, gaze at the sea of clouds, stargaze, admire the moon, and enjoy the colorful terraced fields, feeling completely immersed in the natural beauty between the mountains and waters.
The best rest is to sit on the large balcony of the room to space out or bring a yoga mat to do yoga, which feels very special.
In the evening, there will be Lahu reed pipe dances and song and dance performances, a feast of song and dance, and the ethnic minority song and dance are indeed wonderful. Outdoors, there are also leisure and holiday experience projects such as camping, barbecue, hand-poured coffee, unique woodblock prints, and Pu'er tea (traditional roasted tea).
Pu'er Farmhouse
On a piece of ancient and peaceful land, people can see the distant past of the old fortress, appreciate the culture of the Lahu people, listen to the ethereal and melodious music, and admire the beauty of the tea mountains shrouded in clouds. The hotel is located here, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the local culture and enjoy the unique tranquility of the mountains.
The hotel is situated on a tea mountain opposite the millennium-old fortress, surrounded by green hills and terraced fields, with clouds rolling by, blending seamlessly with the natural environment. On both sides of the plank road are vast tea gardens; during the spring tea season, the air here is filled with the fragrance of tea.
The tea field landscape rooms are suspended above the tea fields, with white roofs and round house designs that create a great sense of space. The rooms have large floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the beautiful scenery outside into view. The balcony is very spacious, and sitting in a chair chatting in the breeze is very pleasant. The equipped bathtub is placed by the window, and taking a bath after a day's fatigue is very comfortable.
The breakfast at the service island here is very rich, and getting up early for rice noodles is a good choice. Additionally, you can taste the light and deep aroma of Yunnan Pu'er tea, dance with the Lahu people, and hike in Jingmai Mountain. Every moment of the experience is an insight into life.

Tea Aroma Sanctuary·Abalara: A Soulful Journey Amidst the Blang Rhythm
Once upon a time, I thought the journey of dreams was nothing more than an armchair strategy, until the moment I stepped into 'Beyond the World·Abalara'.
🌱
Here lies a fairyland where the fragrance of tea and the millennium culture of the Blang people intertwine. As if stepping into a vivid scroll, I find myself embraced by the arms of Jingmai Mountain, surrounded by the gentle embrace of tea aroma and Blang rhythm.

Every detail of the guesthouse is imbued with the unique charm of the Blang people. Inside the rooms, the rustic decorations and exquisite tea sets seem to narrate the stories of the tea mountains, allowing me to hear the whispers of the tea trees and feel the elegance of the tea fragrance.

In terms of food and drink, the place perfectly blends the culinary philosophies of the East and West. Each dish is made with the finest local ingredients and cooked with care, allowing one to taste the delicacies while also experiencing the profound cultural heritage of the land.

Jingmai Mountain Hotel
In the settlements of the Blang and Dai peoples, tea is known as "La". In the Blang language, "A Bai La" means "the spirit of tea", a name that reflects the profound connection between the millennia-old culture of the Blang people on Jingmai Mountain and the fusion with Eastern aesthetics. A Bai La is nestled in the tranquil green valley of Mangjing Village on Jingmai Mountain, surrounded by ancient tea forests, providing a peaceful and harmonious haven. Here, one not only enjoys high-quality accommodation but also experiences the Blang people's distinctive stilted architecture, with each room and public area offering a 180-degree panoramic view.
The architecture of this homestay is unique, with wooden tenons supporting the structure beneath stone-tiled roofs, and interconnected corridors linking four independent villas and a central courtyard. Its layout echoes that of ancient villages. Staying at A Bai La is like returning to a warm home and stepping into a welcoming village.
The dining service follows the seasonal changes of Jingmai Mountain, using local ingredients. A variety of activities are available: hiking, tea picking, visiting, tea tasting, singing, handicraft making, and village tours, allowing you to experience the unparalleled Jingmai Mountain and the magical Blang culture for the first time.

At night, you will spend time around a Blang bonfire with music, feeling the unique melody of the bull-leg guitar. Stay at the Jingmai Mountain A Bai La Ethnic Culture Museum.
