The Bluff Castle, located on the England/Scottish border, was built in 1092 by King William II of England to block access to the Pennine Mountains. The Norman nobleman Clifford family owned the castle in the 1260s. Baron X Clifford made a big feast at Christmas in 1521, but the joy was tragic - the next day the fire burned the castle. After the restoration of the castle, several fires finally turned a prosperous noble house into a ruined wall. In 1921, the descendants of the Clifford family donated the ruined castle to the English Heritage Foundation and opened it to the public. There was no one on duty and the visit was free. There were no other tourists on the day we went, only a few sheep leisurely grazing on the grass outside the castle.
