Piazza della Liberta

This is a historic square with 18th-century Arc de Triomphe and 13th-century San Gallomen. It has always been San Gallomen Square (Porta San Gallo Square). In 1738, the Arc de Triomphe of Lorraine was erected to celebrate the arrival of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty in Florence. The demolition of the medieval city walls in 1865 allowed architect Giuseppe Borghi to remodel the area and in 1875 completed the oval square, currently surrounded by palaces. In the middle of the tree-lined park is the pool with fountains in front of the Arc de Triomphe. The name of the square was Camillo Cavour Square, changed to Costanzo Ciano Square in 1930, Muti Square in 1944, and Freedom Square in 1945.
