Zhangye’s cultural relics and historical sites are scattered throughout the region. Among them, the nationally protected key cultural relics include the Big Buddha Temple, Heishuiguo, Horseshoe Temple, Wenshu Mountain and Yuantong Tower. Zhangye is also rich in natural landscapes. Definitely thought the colours were not going to be as impressive as we’d hoped. While colours IRL were a little more muted than we had seen online, we were still blown away by the sprawling mountain scenery. ⠀

These mountains cover an area of over 200 square miles, and are made from Cretaceous sandstone and siltstone that boast a primarily ‘deep red’ colour. We were lucky enough to be staying at a nearby ‘campsite’ where a number of traditional Kaoshan tent (similar to that of a yurt) gave us shelter for the night and enabled us to see the mountains up close and personal as soon as the sun rose!⠀
