There's no ticket booth at Tiananmen Square. No queue to buy anything either.
Entry is free. That's the trap. Travellers get turned away at the fence most mornings with a useless screenshot.
The square runs on a real-name reservation, and your passport is the ticket.
Here's the route: the booking time that decides your morning, the WeChat walkthrough, what Trip.com can and can't do, and the checkpoint itself.
Tiananmen Square booking time: 12:00 noon, seven days out
Slots open 1 to 7 days ahead. New inventory drops at 12:00 noon Beijing time for the day exactly 7 days out. Miss the noon release on a busy weekend and you'll spend an hour watching cancellations.
Same-day slots aren't sold. Turn up without one and staff will point you back towards the metro stairs.

Sunrise runs from about 04:45 in midsummer to just after 07:30 in December.
Pick one slot. The system won't swap it later, and a morning booking won't get you in for the flag raising.
Set the alarm for 11:55, not 12:00. Expect the worst on the first week of October, Lunar New Year and clear weekends.

Sort these three things out first
WeChat. The reservation lives in a mini-program, and mini-programs live inside WeChat. A Malaysian number signs you up fine, with no VPN needed.
Passport details. Names and numbers have to match the passport exactly, and Chinese forms read family name first.
A phone that takes SMS. Overseas numbers work, but the code can drag. Nothing after 5 minutes? Ask the hotel front desk, passport photo in hand.
The document-type trap
The form asks for 证件类型, document type. Choose 护照, passport. People still leave the default 身份证 in place while the passport number refuses to save.
No spaces in the number, and your name exactly as printed. Then carry that same passport to the checkpoint — a photocopy won't pass, and neither will a photo on your screen. Renewed the passport since booking? The booking dies with the old number.
Step by step: reserving on WeChat
- Search 天安门广场预约参观 in the WeChat top bar.
- Tap the official one with the government emblem, not the paid "booking agent" listings beside it.
- Hit 个人预约, individual reservation.
- Pick your date, up to 7 days out, then one of the four slots.
- Add each visitor: 证件类型 护照, name as printed, passport number, nationality, plus a mobile number for the SMS.
- Submit, then screenshot the QR code. Keep it offline — data drops at the worst moments in China.
- Confirm the slot time the night before. Sunrise moves, and so does the flag slot.

I specifically came to Beijing for a US visa appointment and chose Air China Boyue Beijing Hotel because it's close to the embassy. It's only a ten-minute walk, so I didn't have to rush to catch a bus in the morning. The room has an old-school, retro vibe with wooden furniture and warm yellow lighting; it felt really atmospheric as soon as I walked in. The bedding felt substantial, and the pillow was just the right firmness. I was exhausted from traveling the day before, but I slept soundly until morning. The air conditioning, hot water, and hairdryer all worked perfectly – no issues with outdated equipment, which sometimes happens in older hotels. Cao at the front desk was very down-to-earth and patiently answered all my questions. Yang Dan even proactively reminded me of a good time to arrive at the embassy, being genuinely helpful. The hotel is a bit old, and my room had no window, with a faint smell of smoke drifting in now and then. There was also a persistent, stale plastic odor in the room. These were the only downsides.
The service, however, was genuinely excellent. The housekeeping staff were diligent, enthusiastic, and always ready to help. The same goes for the restaurant staff.
The hotel's restaurant offered a rich variety for breakfast. The Napoleon cake, daifuku, and other cakes from Gongzhiwei Bakery were all incredibly delicious.

Parking is quite convenient, and the service is good too. After all, it's CTS (China Travel Service), they really know how to run things. You can choose from various pillows, like buckwheat, which is a nice touch. The ice cream and pasta at the Western restaurant are also delicious. I stayed here last month, and this time they upgraded my room when I rebooked – much appreciated!

The Beijing New Otani Hotel is an established five-star hotel in Beijing, boasting a prime location near a subway station and a wide array of dining options, including Wangfujing. The hotel itself offers a buffet and a Chinese restaurant. Overall, the hotel is well-maintained. In our room, the shower had excellent water pressure and drained quickly. The bedding was soft, and most importantly, the service was exceptionally friendly. We were in a hurry to check out and accidentally left our charger and important cards in the room. Manager Wang Zhaofeng immediately helped us search for them, responding promptly and quickly sending us photos of the found items, which instantly put our minds at ease. She then arranged for expedited shipping to mail them back to us. This kind of heartfelt service, anticipating and addressing guests' urgent needs, is truly commendable. We visited the hotel's breakfast restaurant once, and the variety was extensive, with excellent taste, quality, and freshness. The restaurant service was also timely and enthusiastic, leaving us very satisfied, especially the excellent service from Runze and Xiao Cai Gege. The housekeeping lady on 8th floor was kind and always made sure to top up water and throw rubbish as I didn’t need my room cleaned everyday. The hotel was in a great central location. We loved the smart controls in the room which help with lighting and opening the curtains from the bedside. The rooms only downsides were a funny smell specific to our room from behind the fridge and the bathroom door which stuck so hard it needed to be pulled shut and made a lid noise when doing so, some oil should resolve this!
Unfortunately when we arrived at 4:15pm from London our room was not ready which was very disappointing after a long trip. We had to wait another hour and go into the city to kill the time.
Also everyone should note this hotel has one lift and no stairs, for a hotel with this many rooms this is simply not good enough. The staff use the same lift as does the cute delivery robot. This meant we spent way too much of our time existing for the elevator to down and up. Given we were on the floor above reception this would have been unnecessary if the stairs were accessible. This was a major issue for us and was the only thing that spoiled the stay.

There's a shopping mall right downstairs, making it convenient for shopping and dining. Attractions like the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, and Wangfujing are only about a 20-minute walk away. The lobby has a very chic, Shanghai-style concept, and the night bar is perfect for socializing and relaxing. The breakfast offered a refined and extensive selection of both Chinese and Western dishes, and there's even a separate bakery. The guest rooms were impeccably clean, and the mattress was just the right firmness, ensuring a very comfortable sleep. The latex pillows were the absolute best – I slept like a baby [smirk]. The staff were friendly and approachable, patiently answering all my questions about local attractions. The breakfast spread was rich and varied, with both Chinese and Western options, and the dining environment was well-organized. It’s a very good hotel located in ideal location . It’s very near to forbidden city which is just few streets away. Many restaurants located nearby, like Si Ji Min Fu Peking Duck. You could get help from the hotel to get the queue number and waiting at the hotel room before your turn. It’s really save a lot of time. The daily breakfast was good , just that the serving plates or cups were found cracked or chipped , the hotel still use that for serving customers during breakfast .We were given free drink voucher and you gotta to get the voucher from the service counter daily. Free laundry and free robot delivery service . As there’s only one robot for food delivery to room, and during peak hour , you might need to go down to collect the food at the hotel counter yourself . And the room cleaning service is awesome and they helped us to clean the baggage and left us a message in sticky note when the job’s done. Kudos to the dedicated room cleaner. I chose this star-rated hotel for my business trip, and it absolutely delivered on luxury—the experience was fantastic.
The location deserves a special mention; it's incredibly convenient for getting around. You can walk to Metro Line 1 and Line 5, making travel effortless. Just 50 meters left from the hotel entrance is a mall with so many shopping and dining options, it's hard to choose—all your retail and food cravings are easily satisfied.
The room was an even bigger surprise. It was incredibly spacious, bright, and well-lit. The floor-to-ceiling window offered an amazing view; lying in bed and enjoying the scenery was pure bliss. The amenities were comprehensive, and the pillows and mattress were perfectly comfortable. I slept like a log, straight until morning—it was incredibly refreshing.

This was my first time staying at the Park Plaza. We came because my child had an exam at the Academy of Arts and Design's attached high school. When we arrived, I didn't even realize there was a hotel next door. What drew us in was the parking lot we spotted as we drove by, and it was indeed very close to the school. The security guard at the entrance confirmed there was plenty of parking, and we were impressed to find both above-ground and underground spaces. So, we decided to book a room. The price was reasonable, not expensive at all, and the hotel had everything: a restaurant, breakfast, and a gym.
Stepping into the lobby, it was bright, and a pleasant aroma filled the air, immediately giving us a holiday vibe and easing our nerves. The young lady at the front desk was incredibly warm and thorough during check-in. She double-checked our late checkout request multiple times to ensure it was fine. Knowing we were there for our child's exam, she even extended our checkout to 3 PM, which was a very rare and thoughtful gesture. Despite many students and parents checking in, it never felt crowded. The elevators were fast, room service was prompt, and the little robot delivering items was adorable and busy.
The room itself was spacious and clean. The first night, the hot water in the bathroom wasn't very hot, possibly due to a high number of guests, but the bathtub was very comfortable, and the bedding was cozy. There was a slight creak when turning over, but it was acceptable. Staff were quick to respond to any extra requests. Parking was free after registering at the front desk.

Facilities: The kids' playground was a bit disappointing. One slide was under maintenance, and there was no trampoline, just building blocks and such – not much to play with. It was worse than what I expected from a family-friendly hotel's children's facilities.
The pool was great and clean.
The hot spring pools were also a lot of fun.
However, the outdoor area only opens at 10:30 AM and the slides close around 5 PM. In Beijing's summer, it's impossible to play when it's at its hottest; you'd get roasted. And it closes before it even gets dark. It's a bit of a shame that we couldn't fully enjoy the outdoor slide pool.
Cleanliness: Clean.
Service: Very good and enthusiastic. Kevin, our butler, helped us solve all sorts of problems throughout our stay. Many thanks to him.
Environment: Right next to Wanda Plaza, so no worries about food and drinks. It was very convenient.

1. The hotel is nestled halfway up the mountain, offering fresh air and truly beautiful surroundings. It's a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle, and the hotel's decor and maintenance are quite good. Our butler, Bella, was incredibly meticulous and thoughtful, taking care of every little detail. She met all our needs, making our stay exceptionally comfortable.
2. There's a wide array of facilities and activities, including a mountainside hot spring, indoor pool, Hatha yoga, singing bowl therapy, a gym, and a kids' club. It's perfect for families, and the kids' club is large and newly renovated – it just reopened in May. It's definitely more fun than the kids' clubs at other hotels I've visited. Plus, children aged 4 and up can be supervised for free, which made my little one super happy!
3. The room key card came with a park map, showing hiking trails. There's an easy 5-kilometer mountain boardwalk, perfect for families, where you can visit the Eight Planets viewing platforms.
4. The breakfast was impressive! They had steaks, lamb chops, and a rich variety of both Chinese and Western dishes. However, the cured meats were generally a bit too salty.
Cons:
1. For a 5-star hotel, there was no safe in the room.
2. While there's an abundance of kids' activities, most of them come with a fee.
3. Since the kids' club was newly renovated, the smell was quite strong, making my eyes and throat uncomfortable.

3. The duplex suite A is very spacious, perfect for families with elderly members and children. Kids, especially, will love rolling and crawling on the tatami mat.
4. Slippers and bath towels are replaced daily, and complimentary fruit is provided every day.
5. After checking out, I left my headphones in the room. The hotel proactively contacted me and arranged for them to be couriered to me, which I truly appreciate.
Cons:
1. The room is very inconvenient for elderly guests with mobility issues. The main bed is on the second floor, making it difficult for them to go up and down. The first floor has a tatami mat, which makes it hard for elderly guests to get up and lie down. If they need to get up at night, they would definitely need assistance.
2. While the room is large, whether the Japanese wabi-sabi style truly suits Chinese guests, especially for a hotel charging 5,000 yuan per night, is a question that needs consideration. The wabi-sabi aesthetic often translates to very sparse furnishings: no comfortable sofas, no bedside tables, no bedside lamps, and certainly no central control panel for all lights and appliances. The tatami mat essentially means sleeping on the floor with a low table, making it very inconvenient and challenging to get up, sit down, or place and retrieve items, which clashes with Chinese living habits.
3. The private hot spring bath in the room only has one switch for hot water, making it impossible to adjust the temperature. Its size is also awkward; it's fine for one person, but feels cramped for two. For a room type designed for six people, such a small bath is quite inconvenient. Furthermore, the inner wall of the bath is made of solid wood, raising concerns about hygiene.
4. The smart toilet was broken and remained unrepaired even after reporting it.
5. The two bedrooms on the second floor, designed to accommodate at least four people, share a single small bathroom, which is a very impractical design.
Additionally, the entire Gubei Water Town is not suitable for elderly visitors with mobility issues, especially those in wheelchairs. The flagstone paths are very uneven, and there are many steps, which would make a wheelchair ride extremely bumpy and uncomfortable.DariTRY 11,239

I've lost count of how many times I've stayed at NUO Hotel Beijing. We've been coming here every time we visit Beijing since my child was very young! This time, the front desk staff, Mina, upgraded our room and gave us complimentary executive breakfast on the 25th floor, which was much appreciated! The breakfast selection was small but exquisite, and the service was excellent.
There are many kid-friendly attractions around NUO Hotel, and the pool is also very clean. Among hotels in Beijing at a similar price point, the location and value for money are top-notch. We booked a twin room this time, and they combined the beds into a super-king, just like at Universal NUO – a big thumbs up!

First off, the location is super convenient. I was flying with China Eastern, and the hotel is just a three to five-minute walk to the check-in counter.

However, the room was a bit noisy, so I went back to the front desk to ask for a change. Traveling to Beijing alone for medical treatment, the Regent was fantastic! It's definitely the top choice for patients going to Peking Union Medical College Hospital; it's just a 5-minute walk, right across the street.
My flight landed at Capital Airport at 10 PM, and I needed to take medicine late at night. The Hainanese chicken rice I ordered was deboned and delicious! They even rushed the order for me, and it arrived in my room very quickly. I specifically asked the front desk to wake me up at 7 AM and then again at 7:30 AM. They successfully woke me up for my 7 AM appointment at Xiehe (Peking Union Medical College Hospital), allowing me to be on time for my consultation.
All the room service meals were delicious. Since I'd lost weight and was a bit weak, I didn't want to go out, so I ordered room service several times and was very satisfied. The food was great, so everyone can feel confident eating at the hotel!
The male duty manager was excellent; he promptly explained and resolved a few minor unpleasant service issues. The front desk staff were also serious, responsible, and enthusiastic, which made for a very pleasant guest experience. The housekeeping auntie was also very warm and attentive to guests. The room service staff and floor managers were all very polite.

I booked an Executive King Room, and the hotel upgraded me to a suite, which I then upgraded myself to their signature panoramic view room. The view was excellent, offering a 270-degree view from three sides, directly facing the bustling Sanlitun Taikoo Li commercial district. This is one of Beijing's most vibrant areas, with many events, such as the outdoor fashion week happening right downstairs during my stay. The hotel's location is superb, surrounded by malls, bars, and restaurants. There's a constant flow of people and traffic throughout the day and well into the night.
The InterContinental Club on the 22nd floor offered morning tea and afternoon tea with fewer crowds and excellent service – even more welcoming and attentive than other hotels. The gym and swimming pool were both good and not crowded at all.
The emotional value of standing by the window in the panoramic view room and enjoying the scenery was truly immense. The downside, however, is the price; I wouldn't have been able to afford it if the hotel hadn't given me a discount. Also, the electric curtains on the front and both side panoramic windows are linked, meaning that most of the time, to block out the view of the neighboring guest room from one side, the other panoramic curtain also has to be closed, which is quite frustrating. When I visited Universal Studios Beijing this time, after doing my research and comparing options, I chose NUO Hotel, and it turns out I made the right choice.
Don't let the seemingly greater distance from Universal Studios Hotel deter you; it's actually just a five-minute walk across the street.
The room was twice the size, the slippers were incredibly comfortable, and they provided ten small bottles of water plus one large bottle daily... I was truly impressed.
I bought a package that included a two-day, one-night stay + double breakfast + 1.5-day park tickets + early park access. This was absolutely worth it. Buying the tickets separately would cost around a thousand yuan, and with early access, it would be about 1,500 yuan. Deducting the breakfast cost, the room itself was effectively only a little over a thousand yuan... and it was so comfortable that I even extended my stay for another day. The extended stay didn't come with complimentary tickets, though, and cost 2,700 yuan.
If I had to point out a flaw, it would be how difficult the toiletries were to squeeze out. As someone who works in the skincare and personal care industry, I truly believe such product design shouldn't be found in a five-star hotel... What's going on? Are they trying to prevent guests from using them?
The breakfast was unbeatable! I loved the smoked salmon. The restaurant offered a good variety, and the taste was excellent with high-quality fruit. Five-star rating!DariTRY 11,702

Step by step: what you can actually book on Trip.com
Trip.com holds no allocation of square slots. The reservation stays free and official, and somebody still has to file it — you, your hotel, or a tour operator.
- Search Tiananmen Square in the app. The attraction page shows free entry, 05:00–20:30 hours and 16,377 reviews. Nothing to add to a cart.
- Filter Beijing day tours for operators who file the slot for you. Titles say so. Forbidden City Half-day Tour & Tiananmen Square Tickets Reservation runs about RM140 for 4 hours; a small-group walking tour starts at RM134.
- Add every traveller with the passport name and number exactly as printed. The filing has to match your passport character for character.
- Pay, then message the operator from your order confirmation. Send a photo of your passport bio page and your preferred slot, and ask for the slot time in writing.
- Add the Palace Museum ticket for the same day. Forbidden City tickets are a separate product with their own cap, released 7 days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time. Closed Mondays. ¥60 April to October, ¥40 November to March. Trip.com's guided ticket handles the ID-linked booking.
- Book the boring parts. A Dongcheng hotel puts the checkpoint within walking distance, an airport transfer covers the PEK or PKX run, and a local SIM keeps your QR code loading.
- Re-confirm 24 hours out. One line: "Please confirm my Tiananmen Square slot time for tomorrow." Screenshot the reply.
One warning. Listings advertising a "Tiananmen Square ticket" sell a service, not an official ticket. The square is free. You're paying for paperwork.
On arrival: metro exit to flagpole
- Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West, or Line 2 to Qianmen for the south side. Foreign cards tap through the turnstiles — Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Amex all clear.
- Carry the passport you booked with. Original only. Not a scan, not a photo.
- Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before your slot. Flag raisers should be at the fence 90 minutes before sunrise.
- Choose your checkpoint. The Qianmen and Zhengyangmen gates on the south side move quickest. Chang'an Avenue underpasses jam around 08:30.
- Empty your pockets before the scanner. Lighters, matches, blades, tripods, drones and anything printed with a slogan get refused. Umbrellas get opened, water bottles get a sip test.
- Leave the suitcase at the hotel. Large backpacks and rolling luggage don't pass, and the counters outside come with another queue.
- Hold your screenshot and passport together. Staff scan both, then wave you through.
- No re-entry. Step out for a coffee and you're done for the day.
What to do with the rest of your day
- The Palace Museum opens north of the square at 08:30, stops admitting at 16:00. Four hours flat.
- The National Museum of China sits on the east side, free, with its own slot released at 17:00 for 7 days ahead. Trip.com shows it reopening on 1 October.
- Qianmen Street runs south of the square, free all day, best after dark.
- Jingshan Park hands you the postcard view over the Forbidden City roofs for a short climb.
- Wangfujing handles dinner, with halal kitchens a taxi ride west around Niujie.
- Mutianyu Great Wall is the sensible next morning. Temple of Heaven fits an afternoon slot.
