One bowl gets most of the attention in Kunming. That is a pity. The Yunnan capital also cooks xiaoguo mixian in little copper pots, steams chicken in a clay vessel, piles seasonal mushrooms into hot pot and bakes rose petals into flaky cakes. Around Shuncheng Street, Hui-run noodle shops and bakeries sit within a short walk of Shuncheng Mosque.
So where should lunch begin? This Kunming Food guide sorts the big ceremonial dishes from quick breakfasts, with a separate check for halal diners at each stop. What should you eat in Kunming?
Make crossing bridge noodles the first proper lunch. After that, order the smaller things: a sharp bowl of xiaoguo mixian, grilled erkuai for breakfast and douhua mixian when a full meal feels excessive. Save steam-pot chicken for a group dinner. Budget at least 2 hours for wild mushroom hot pot in Guanshang.
There is one catch for Muslim travellers. The 10-row table keeps the risky ingredients visible. "Check first" below means that pork, lard, cooking wine or a shared stock may be part of the usual recipe. The useful word is qingzhen, written 清真.

Crossing bridge noodles: order first, photograph later
Guoqiao mixian comes from Mengzi in Yunnan's Honghe Prefecture, though visitors now find crossing bridge noodles all over Kunming City. Lunch may cover half the table. Expect 3 parts: a deep bowl of near-boiling broth, a bundle of rice noodles and several small plates of meat, tofu skin, mushrooms, vegetables or quail egg.
The quiet-looking surface is deceptive because oil traps the heat below it. Do this quickly: raw meat and egg first, vegetables and tofu skin next, noodles last. Then wait. A 5-minute photo session before the raw plates go in leaves cooler broth and poorly cooked ingredients.
Pork can appear twice, in the sliced meat and in the stock. Even a set labelled chicken may sit over pork-bone broth. Halal crossing bridge noodles should come from a 清真 restaurant that can explain its stock, meat source and kitchen practice.
Ordering more side plates does not fix a weak broth. Pick the 3-plate basic set when another snack is due within 2 hours; a normal bowl is heavy enough.
Small-pot noodles, tofu noodles and ersi
Xiaoguo mixian is the everyday counterpoint to the famous Mengzi bowl. The cook works with one small copper pot, pickled mustard greens, garlic chives and chilli; many Kunming versions also begin with minced pork. In a qingzhen shop, ask for the halal beef or chicken recipe.
Douhua mixian is messier and lighter. Soft tofu pudding meets rice noodles, chilli oil, soy sauce, peanuts, garlic and pickles, and each counter changes the ratio. Ask about lard.Ersi, written 饵丝, has a flatter and chewier texture than round mixian. Share a small bowl near Green Lake Park if 3 noodle meals in one day sound excessive. The Green Lake Park page on Trip.com lists No. 66 Cuihu South Road in Wuhua District, a useful starting point for a southbound food walk through Wenlin Street and Kunming Old Street.

What can I say about this hotel? I stay here every time I come to Kunming, so it's safe to say it's true love.
First, the location is unbeatable. It's right across from the Yunnan Provincial Library, just a short walk to Cuihu Lake, and surrounded by plenty of dining, entertainment, and shopping options. It's a real gem.
Second, the value for money is outstanding. For this location, cleanliness, and comfort, you'd easily pay hundreds more in other cities. Here, it's a quiet oasis in the bustling city, all for under 500 yuan. Thumbs up!

I really enjoyed just relaxing in the room, drinking coffee, and reading a book. Stayed for one night and the hotel was so good, I immediately booked for two more. The hotel staff were incredibly thoughtful, and the breakfast was absolutely delicious. The male manager with glasses in the restaurant, along with the lovely hostess at the reception, were both amazing. There were two staff members with glasses, one with a very red face, and the young man who made the rice noodles even told me the most authentic way to eat them. The omelet chef respectfully greeted guests by bowing his head. And my absolute favorite was the Thai rice noodles – so tasty I ate them for three days straight! A big thank you to the restaurant's head chef who even added extra sauce and let me pack some to eat on the plane. The fresh flower pastries were fantastic; the manager gave me a box, and they were so good I was speechless. I ended up buying three more boxes myself, and everyone who tried them back home raved about how delicious they were. Seriously, you *must* buy them, highly recommended! We were on a family trip and originally planned to stay at the Grand Hyatt Kunming, but we couldn't get a room because we hadn't booked in advance. So we ended up staying at this hotel instead, and the overall experience was comfortable and recommendable. Our room was on a higher floor with an expansive view, though there's still some development happening around the hotel. The room itself was small but clean, and the facilities were well-maintained. The shower had great water pressure, which was refreshing. The window allowed for good natural light, and it was quiet at night, so we slept soundly. Downstairs, there are many snack options, and Wanda Plaza is right next door, making it convenient for finding food. The hotel breakfast offered a rich selection. The hotel is about a 15-minute taxi ride from Kunming Station. The overall price was affordable, making it a good choice for family trips, business travel, and more. Facilities: A bit old, but generally pretty good. The bed is neither too soft nor too hard. The duvet is fine with the AC on, but it can get a bit warm without it, given Kunming's large temperature variations. There's a small garden and an outdoor hot tub, but apparently it's not usable. It's very photogenic though!
The living room and bedroom are separate, which is great for families or multiple families staying together as you can chat comfortably. There are also seating areas in the room corridors where you can relax and talk.
Being inside the scenic area, the courtyard rooms are quiet. Other room types might be a bit noisier. At midday, it can feel quite bustling outside with traffic and vendors calling out. The courtyard suites, however, are not noisy at all.
The location is in the Jinbi area, not far from Nanping Old Street. Just cross a road and walk through Nanping Hui, and you're in a commercial area. For food and drinks, there are snacks right downstairs, though not many main courses. I think the options across the street are better. The hotel breakfast is à la carte and needs to be ordered a day in advance. We tried it one day, but after that, we opted for takeout or ate out.
The hotel service is quite good. They have a butler service, and the staff's attitude is very pleasant. When we had a delay, they helped us coordinate a later checkout.
For transport, since it's within the scenic area, you'll probably need to walk a bit after getting off the car. However, you can also have your car drive to the parking lot, and there's an elevator near the exit that takes you up.Dari€ 57

This hotel is quite old overall. The carpets in the hallway were a bit stained, and the facilities were rather basic. At over 3500 yuan per night, the value for money is very low.
Although the hotel has a small animal area, a mini-train, and some children's activities, the mini-train requires advance booking and only runs once an hour, on the hour. All the children's activities also incur extra charges. During our 3-day stay, there were business meetings every day, with a check-in desk set up in the lobby. In short, it's not very suitable for a family vacation.
Additionally, the swimming pool and outdoor hot spring area were pitch black at night; you could barely see anything (I went out on the first night and couldn't even find the hot springs). When I wanted to swim during the day, there were kids having swimming lessons, occupying three lanes...
The breakfast was standard, nothing special. Sweet soup was delivered to the room in the evenings.
The only positive was the very enthusiastic housekeeping auntie; she deserves a good review.

I chose InterContinental Kunming, which has been open for over ten years, because of its location by Dian Lake. It's about a ten-minute walk to the lake, and the surrounding area is very quiet.
Old doesn't necessarily mean outdated. The lobby's central axis symmetrical layout gives off a strong and stable aura. The staff are present and attentive without being overly intrusive.
This sense of space and appropriate discretion is something many trendy 'influencer' hotels struggle to provide.
The hotel's garden area is quite large, with palm and coconut trees giving it a Southeast Asian resort feel. There were even fragrant osmanthus flowers in bloom.
The hotel's breakfast spread is very rich, with many Kunming specialties. I loved the rice noodles, each bowl freshly cooked in a copper pot, with both red broth and chicken broth options, catering to both strong and light palates. The 'posu bao' (flaky steamed bun), sticky rice, and the hotel's homemade flower cakes and Yunnan ham biscuits were just as good as, if not better than, those from famous brands outside. There was also yogurt from Gejiu, and you could tell by the taste that the ingredients were pure!

Jinjiang Hotel's service is absolutely fantastic! They proactively offered a free room upgrade, the room was clean, tidy, and well-equipped. 1️⃣ Location: The hotel is very close to Cuihu Lake. We walked with our stroller to Cuihu Park and Yuantongshan Zoo within a day. Downstairs is a prime citywalk route, passing by Zhibushi (a stationery store) and Rubber Bookstore. Ordering takeout was incredibly convenient, with a wide variety of options and delicious food. We enjoyed Dianhong lattes while tea-tasting uphill and avocado yogurt from Xiangzi Tea Shop.
2️⃣ Room Condition: The 13th-floor front desk was well-decorated and impressive. The room we booked was advertised as 28 square meters, but the actual room we were initially assigned upon check-in didn't seem that large. Plus, the window overlooked an old residential complex, which didn't match the city street view mentioned in the description. After contacting the hotel, they moved us to a room with a street view that was also slightly larger. 🛀 The showerhead was excellent; showering was very enjoyable.
3️⃣ Service: Check-in was after 2:00 PM, but even though we arrived after 3:00 PM, we still waited about 15 minutes to check in. Calls to the front desk were answered quickly, and you could tell the staff were dedicated, but perhaps they were a bit overwhelmed due to too many guests.
4️⃣ Facilities: There's a laundry room and treadmill on the 1st floor. The washer and dryer worked well, and the treadmill was good too. An hour of incline walking finally burned some calories. The downside is that the elevator is quite small and easily gets overloaded.
5️⃣ Value for Money: We paid 500+ for the hotel. Since the room was still quite small, I feel most of the money went towards the location, so the value for money wasn't very high. If location isn't your top priority, a hotel on Nanping Street would also be a good option.Dari€ 33

I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. I was quite hesitant before choosing it, especially after reading about the negative elevator incident, which made me really worry about safety. So, every time I took the elevator during my stay, I was on edge. The main reason I decided to stay was for the hot springs and swimming pool, as it's been raining a lot in Kunming recently, and I figured we'd just enjoy the hotel. Honestly, I wasn't particularly impressed with the service, and the facilities are quite old, very old. If it weren't for the constant rain and traveling with a child, I probably wouldn't have chosen this hotel. The hotel is located right by Dianchi Lake, with separate lanes for vehicles and pedestrians. There's an observation deck not far from the hotel, and it's about 800-900 meters to Haigeng Park and Haihong Wetland. However, you still have to walk further to get to the cable car station, and I estimate the dam is even further – I didn't go there. The hotel is 2.3 kilometers from Xingti Road Station on Metro Line 5. Our package included one complimentary drop-off service to the metro station, which was really good. It would be even better if they offered round-trip shuttle service to the metro for backpackers.
However, there aren't many shops around the hotel. For dining, it's either the hotel restaurant or ordering takeout. Park 1903 Commercial Street is about 3 kilometers away, so it's more suitable if you have a car.
The hotel service was excellent. The front desk staff, housekeeping, and drivers were all incredibly gentle and friendly. The manager even proactively helped us with our luggage.

I ordered takeout, but the hotel doesn't allow the deliveryman to deliver to the room because it was inconvenient for me, so I asked the front desk for help, and it was delivered to the room very quickly. When I asked the reason, the front desk guy told me that it was for the safety of the guests that the deliveryman was not allowed to go upstairs. The hotel has trained guests that if they need takeout to the room, they can help deliver it. The overall feeling of the hotel is good, and the service attitude is very good. When I checked in, I asked about the surrounding attractions and routes, and they explained it very patiently. The room internet connection was very fast, and I asked the waiter, who told me that each room has an independent dedicated line. There were both indoor and outdoor pools, and the hot spring water was drawn from underground. The whole hotel was a recreational attraction. However, the restaurant management needs improvement. After checking in on May 14th, it was my friend's birthday. Seeing that the hotel was nice, we decided to celebrate at the hotel restaurant. We went to the restaurant at 5 PM, hoping to book a private room early. The duty manager that day told us we couldn't enter a private room without a reservation. We explained that if there were empty private rooms, we'd like to book one on the spot. The manager adamantly refused, stating that reservations must be made half a day in advance. We assured them we would meet the hotel's minimum spend for the private room and proposed that booking now and returning a bit later could count as a reservation. But no, the manager sternly reiterated that reservations *must* be made half a day in advance. Having traveled all over Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan, this was the first time I've encountered such a situation. When you're under someone else's roof, you have to play by their rules, so we gave up and ate in the main dining area. After dinner, on our way back to the room, we passed the private room section – it was practically empty.
The next day, we quickly checked out to find a hotel that actually lets you book a private room. I wonder if we'll find one in Kunming.Dari€ 46

This business hotel is a typical case of ”great location, but hardware lags behind.” It's ideal for those who need to be around Tongde and prioritize convenient transportation. However, if you have high expectations for facility quality and hygiene, you might want to reconsider.
The location is its biggest advantage. It's about a ten-minute walk to Tongde Plaza and Baiyun Road subway station, with plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby, making dining and shopping easy. The hotel also has a free parking lot, which is a plus for those traveling by car. Check-in at the front desk was efficient, and the staff's attitude was neither overly enthusiastic nor neglectful.
However, the shortcomings in the stay experience are also quite noticeable. Arriving around 2 PM, well past the usual cleaning time, I found a large bag of trash left behind the door when I opened it, indicating a clear oversight in the housekeeping's final checks. The room was not large, with a compact layout, leaving limited space after luggage was placed.
The hardware showed significant signs of aging: the wall outlets were visibly worn, with yellowed and loose plastic casings, clearly indicating their age. The metal shelf by the sink was already rusty, suggesting a lack of attention to detail in maintenance, which falls short of the brand's positioning. Additionally, during my stay, people often rang the doorbell in the evening. We had to get off a short distance from the hotel and drag all our luggage there. If you're a foreign tourist or traveling by chartered car, I recommend confirming whether your vehicle can directly reach the hotel before booking.
2. **Good Service Attitude, but Overall Slow Response Time**
The hotel staff generally have a friendly attitude. I particularly want to thank a few female staff members who helped us carry our heavy luggage down the stairs to where our chartered car could park – I'm truly grateful. However, the hotel's response time for guest requests for item delivery or assistance was noticeably slow, with generally long waiting times. I'm not sure if it was due to understaffing at the time, but I believe the stay experience would be significantly improved if they could strengthen staff allocation and response efficiency.

The rooms, corridors, and some public areas appear quite dated, and there's a somewhat strong musty smell in the hotel. Although the hotel information states that it has been renovated in recent years, you can still feel the traces of many old facilities during your actual stay. Plus, the room rate isn't cheap. So, if you're choosing based on **”four-star hotel standards,”** my friends and I would both advise lowering your expectations a bit, otherwise, you might experience significant disappointment upon arrival.

My stay might have been better if I had avoided the peak summer/winter holiday season. What we like most here:
1. Staff: Xiao Bai and Xiao Wan, the 2 receptionists are lovely guys. Xiao Bai pick us up outside of the buiding to help us with the luggage. He is also professional in handling his work. he seems a bit serious on his face but once you know him, he is a nice guy. Xiao Wan is a lovely young boy. We talked a lot, he made us yummy milk tea, bought for us ice crea, fruit tea....and gave us some sourvenir. They are the ones made my stay here. Thank you guys! Moreover the hotel staffs also helped to received a package for me before my check in.
2. Location: it locates on the 4th floor of a building. It has a good location, where we can access easily to the shopping mall, the food stores. There is a small food court on the ground floor of the same building. The 1st store after the stair case once you enter the building sells pretty good noodles.
3. The balcony: my room is 201, with a balcony overlooking the garden on the ground and an open space to the big building in front, which gave us a peaceful corner to sit and talk and enjoy the nice spring weather.
4. The costume: the hotel offers free Miao costume to wear and take photo inside the hotel. Xiao Wan, the receptionist also help to take soem nice photos for us.
What should be improved:
1. The cleanliness: the room facilities were a bit old but the cleanliness is definitely something can be changed and improved: like the table in the balcony, which should have been clean the surface.
2. The amenities: the big bath towels are torn out at the 2 edges. They can be reused as footmat or rag to recycle. New bath towel should be seriously considered.

The craft beer every night was actually the biggest reason I chose to stay here – it felt like a beer lover coming home! They serve until 11 PM, but I arrived late and messaged them a few minutes before closing, and they still delivered it to my room. Overall, I'm very satisfied. The breakfast was also delicious, and for the Western option, they contact you 15 minutes in advance to deliver it to your room. I'll definitely prioritize staying here again next time and will recommend it to friends. My only regret is that I missed the afternoon tea ice cream because I was out sightseeing.
If I had to offer some suggestions, first, I think the quality of the toothbrushes could be improved. The current disposable ones really don't match the overall vibe of the hotel, and they even shed bristles. Second, it would be great if they could add another set of washing machines and dryers for laundry. This is unbelievable! At first, they asked me to go to the main road to stop taxi to go airport. I was too shocked to say anything. However, hours later, front office arranged their shuttle to drop me off at the airport. This was a surprise and I appreciated it. The drop off was at domestic arrival door, not international departure. Driver said the road was closed. This is puzzling - why an airport closed the road for international departures.

Steam-pot chicken and the Yunnan clay pot
The pot explains qiguo ji better than its English name does. A hollow tube rises through the middle of the Yunnan clay vessel; steam climbs through it, hits the lid and returns as clear chicken broth. The cook does not begin by drowning the chicken in water.
Order it for 2 or more people. Some Kunming restaurants add ginger, spring onion or sanqi, so ask what is included if you avoid alcohol or medicinal herbs. Muslim travellers should choose a halal kitchen and confirm the chicken, stock and cookware.
Steam-pot chicken fits well after an evening walk around the Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archways. Jinma Square is near Nanping Pedestrian Street and the old commercial lanes, which keeps dinner within the central Wuhua and Xishan side of Kunming.
Wild mushroom hot pot needs patience
Rainy-season menus make Yunnan cuisine look almost botanical. One day's Kunming list may include niuganjun and jizong; the next may lean on morels or songrong. Supply decides the meal.
A timer on the table is a safety tool. Several wild fungi are unsafe raw or undercooked, so specialist Guanshang kitchens decide when the first serving can leave the pot. Keep it boiling for the stated time. Wait for the staff.
Halal diners must check the stock, sliced meat, cooking wine and shared utensils. A mushroom basket does not make the pot halal. If a Guanxing Road kitchen cannot answer clearly, choose qingzhen beef hot pot around Shuncheng Street instead.
Erkuai, rushan and flower cakes
Erkuai starts as cooked rice, but pounding gives it a dense chew that feels closer to a rice cake than bread. At a shao erkuai stall, the cook grills one round sheet, paints on a sweet or hot sauce and folds it around pickles, fried dough or meat. Watch the fillings. Sausage and pork floss are common, and the grill may be shared.
Chao erkuai is sliced and stir-fried. A Hui restaurant can prepare it with beef, greens and pickles; elsewhere, Yunnan ham may enter the wok.
Rushan comes from Bai dairy traditions in Dali City. The thin milk sheet is grilled until blistered, rolled around a stick and often brushed with rose jam. Rubing is thicker and commonly pan-fried. Both contain dairy, but shared grills and nearby ham still matter for halal diners.
Fresh flower cake, or xianhua bing, is an easy Kunming souvenir. Rose petals fill it. Read the label or buy from a halal bakery because some dough uses lard. Fresh cakes are softer, while boxed versions survive a flight more easily.
The Yunnan Provincial Museum and Kunming Dounan Flower Market make a sensible southeastern pairing between meals. Both are southeast of Central Kunming. Dounan Flower Market sits in Chenggong District, on the southeastern side of the wider Kunming City area. Yunnan Provincial Museum is on Guangfu Road in Guandu District.

Kunming halal food around Shuncheng Street
Start with Shuncheng Street. In central Wuhua District, its lanes connect Shuncheng Mosque with Zhengyi Road, Kunming Old Street and Nanping Pedestrian Street. Wuyi Road Station on Line 3 is about a 5-minute walk from this side of Central Kunming. Find 清真 in the actual restaurant name or over the door. A green sign by itself proves nothing.
Hui kitchens here sell beef rice noodles, beef dumplings, pan-fried guotie, grilled lamb, beef hot pot and baked pastries. Use the district as a starting point instead of depending on one stall name, since small-shop hours and tenants change. Friday midday is prayer time around Shuncheng Mosque; dress modestly and do not block its entrances.

Dounan Flower Market lies in Chenggong District, away from the old centre. Pair it with Yunnan Provincial Museum or Guandu Ancient Town, not a rushed 30-minute detour from Green Lake. Check the Kunming attraction list before grouping the day.
Guanxing Road in the Guanshang area is the planned-dinner choice for mushroom hot pot. Allow 2 hours. Skip it before a tightly timed Kunming Railway Station departure.
Book High-Speed Rail to Commute in Kunming
A one-day Kunming food route
08:00 is erkuai time. A halal beef mixian works too, followed by a walk through Green Lake Park toward Kunming Old Street.
Order crossing bridge noodles at 11:30, before the main lunch queue. Put the raw plates into the broth straight away. At 14:00, split one fresh flower cake over tea and check which boxed batch will travel home without crumbling.
Reach Shuncheng Street near 16:30 and read the 清真 signs before settling on dinner. Sit down around 18:30. Beef guotie is a useful small plate; steam-pot chicken, beef hot pot or chao erkuai can carry the meal. Nanping Pedestrian Street and the Golden Horse Archway come afterwards.
