Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from a fantastic shopping spree in Hong Kong – and I’m still buzzing from the amazing deals! From skincare and electronics to local snacks and designer labels, Hong Kong is a true paradise for shoppers. But here’s a tip that many international visitors might not know: you can actually get a tax refund on your shopping!

Yes, under Hong Kong’s Tax Refund Scheme for tourists, eligible travellers can claim back the consumption tax paid on purchases made at participating retailers. It’s a great way to save even more while enjoying everything this vibrant city has to offer. So if you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong and shopping is on your list, don’t miss this opportunity to claim your tax refund. I’ll guide you through how the refund process works, who’s eligible, and how to claim it smoothly before you head home. ✨🛍💳

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemptions in Hong Kong

When shopping in Hong Kong, you’ll be glad to know that the city has no value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) on most items. That’s right — prices are generally tax-free, which means what you see is what you pay!

However, if you're shopping at designated duty-free stores or purchasing items for export, you may be eligible for certain tax exemptions or refunds depending on the store’s policy and your departure point. 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of dim sum or egg tarts 🥢🍮
✅ Extra skincare, electronics, or luxury goods to take home 💄📱
✅ And plenty of souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales Tax in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram

Here’s some great news for shoppers: Hong Kong does not impose a Sales and Service Tax (SST), VAT, or GST on most goods and services. That means:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

Whether you’re browsing luxury brands at Harbour City, exploring boutiques in Causeway Bay, or picking up local finds at Mong Kok’s street markets, the price you see is usually the price you pay.

🧠 Tip: While most goods are tax-free, be aware of duty-free regulations if you’re planning to bring items back home. Always check your country’s customs limits to avoid unexpected charges.

📜 Understanding the Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Hong Kong?

Victoria Harbour

Hong Kong is known for its no VAT or GST policy, meaning most goods and services are already tax-free. However, traditional tax refund systems like those in other countries do not apply here, as Hong Kong does not impose sales tax on general consumer purchases.

Still, here’s what international visitors should know:

✅ 1. General Goods

Clothing, electronics, accessories, souvenirs, and skincare products are generally sold without any added consumption tax. No refunds are necessary because the price you pay is already tax-free.

✅ 2. Duty-Free Purchases

When departing from Hong Kong International Airport, you can shop at duty-free outlets offering alcohol, tobacco, fragrances, and luxury items at special tax-exempt prices.

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • There is no Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in Hong Kong, as the city operates a low-tax, free-port economy.
  • If you're shopping at a duty-free store, ensure your items are packed according to airline rules and declare them if required by your home country’s customs.
  • Always check whether a store is duty-free licensed if you’re specifically seeking tax-exempt deals.

🧠 Tip: Since prices are already competitive and tax-free, Hong Kong is one of the best places in Asia for high-value shopping without the hassle of refund paperwork!

Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Hong Kong?

Unlike many countries, Hong Kong does not impose VAT, GST, or Sales and Service Tax (SST) on most goods and services. As such, there is no formal Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in place — because most retail purchases are already tax-free.

However, if you're shopping at duty-free stores or purchasing goods for export, here are some things to know:

✅ You are automatically eligible for tax-free shopping if you are:

  • A non-Hong Kong resident visiting as a tourist
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Departing Hong Kong by air from the Hong Kong International Airport

✅ Duty-Free Shopping Tips:

  • No minimum spend is required for most duty-free items (e.g. alcohol, tobacco, fragrances).
  • Duty-free purchases must be taken out of Hong Kong and are subject to import limits in your destination country.
  • Keep your passport handy when shopping at duty-free stores in the airport — it may be required at checkout.

✈️ Important: While Hong Kong doesn't offer tax refunds, prices are already highly competitive thanks to its free-port status. Still, if you're flying internationally, be aware of customs regulations at your next destination, especially for items like alcohol, cosmetics, and electronics.

Location is excellent given it is connected to the shopping mall so no impact rain or shine but there seems to be no designated car pick up or drop off point and empty taxis (those only willing to go to airport!) are always occupying the area right in front of the main entrance on Canton Road thus making the rest of the people trying to get rides very dangerous as our cars will have to double park and let us get on in the middle of the road! The hotel is an old hotel but recently renovated so although decor and furnitures show its age, it’s still quite functional, even for those with wheelchairs. Room is spacious and bathroom has both bath tub and shower but the toilet flushing is a bit slow. Hotel was kind enough to upgrade our suite to the executive floor and we were met by very professional and friendly staff there. When we asked for a shower chair for my mom who uses a wheelchair, they promptly provided one! Special thanks to all the personnel on the executive floor who were helpful and attentive, as well as to the Concierge team who assisted us with our freezer storage requests! Our overall experience at the hotel has been great and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the location is absolutely unbeatable. The room was also spacious and the bed was very comfortable. My only minor complaint is that the room I was assigned this time didn't have much of a view – all I could see when I opened the curtains was the building opposite. Other than that, everything was perfect!

My child had an entrance exam in Hong Kong, and after a long search, I picked this hotel and was very satisfied. The front desk staff were incredibly welcoming and spoke excellent English. They even extended our checkout time to 1 PM. The next day, we were a little late getting back from the exam, and they extended it again to 1:30 PM. It's so convenient – you can walk directly to Langham Place from level L via a footbridge, which has all sorts of food options. Mong Kok MTR station, Exit C, is right downstairs. Seriously, it's super convenient for dining, accommodation, and transportation. The value for money is excellent. The room also had a little booklet with recommendations for food, accommodation, and transportation, which was a nice touch. I'm very satisfied. Thank you! 🙏🌷🌷🌷

I stayed for four nights. The hotel is located near Mong Kok East Station, but it's not too far to walk to Prince Edward Station or Mong Kok Station, making it super convenient to get to other places! (There's even a skybridge with escalators directly to Mong Kok Station, so no worries about rain or lugging luggage!) The room was quite spacious, but perhaps because the plumbing is a bit old? You have to close the shower and toilet doors, otherwise, a sewer smell drifts into the room. Aside from the smell, the overall experience was good!

Seriously good! The service was excellent; they accommodated my late check-out and gave me a free upgrade. The location is also incredibly convenient. It's close to the subway, and you can walk to Times Square, SOGO, and other shopping centers in just a few minutes. There are tons of restaurants, a fruit market nearby, and plenty of bus stops too. Highly recommend! 👍👍

This is a very good hotel for Hong Kong standards. The only minor inconvenience is that it's not directly above an MTR station, but they do offer a shuttle bus service to West Kowloon and Sha Tin. Many hotels in Hong Kong are quite old, but this one is not only newly renovated and clean, but the service is also warm and attentive, always ready to help. Most importantly, the soundproofing is excellent, which is incredibly rare and a huge plus! Highly recommended. [The following content is unrelated to the hotel]: The Ctrip flight ticket promotion, 'Buy 19.9 RMB to get 15 RMB off 4 flight tickets,' is a complete scam and rip-off. Do not buy it! There are numerous restrictions that make it unusable. The so-called 'complaint specialist' - Fudoudou - is an *****, repeating the same single sentence even more than a robot. Ctrip is rotten to the core, stay away!

I've stayed at the L'hotel Nina et Convention Centre many times. The hotel is currently undergoing internal renovations, and this time I specifically booked a High Block Deluxe room. However, they initially gave me a room on the 52nd floor, which is a low floor for the High Block, and it was in the very corner, right next to a renovating room. There was a renovation smell, and it was even worse than the room I had in the Podium Block last time. I requested a higher floor, and while I did get a few floors up, it was still a corner room right next to a renovating area, and it was even smaller. It was too late and I was too tired to bother moving again, so I just dealt with it. I won't be staying at the L'hotel Nina for a while.

I booked one night at this hotel because I had an early flight the next day! (It wasn't my first time staying here!) The hotel is a bit old, but the hygiene is acceptable. However, the location is unbeatable – right inside the airport! As a luxury hotel within Hong Kong International Airport, the staff's attitude was arrogant and impolite. They really need better training in customer service.

For this location in Hong Kong, I'm quite satisfied with the price. Although it's a bit small, that's understandable given how expensive space is here. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. It's super convenient, just a five-minute walk from Jordan MTR station, and it was cleaner and tidier than I expected. It has a fridge and a freezer, but the power outlets weren't compatible with my own plugs.

Hygiene: The bed sheets and duvet covers didn't seem to have been changed, as there were a few strands of hair on the pillow, and more hair was found when I pulled back the duvet at the foot of the bed. After the sheets were changed, my skin felt itchy when I slept at night. Service: The service was alright. They were cooperative when I asked for new sheets, trash removal, and extra tissues. Environment: The hotel's location is quite central, making it convenient to get around. Facilities: The facilities are a bit old, but that's understandable for Hong Kong. I just hope the hygiene conditions can be improved.

I booked a king room but was upgraded for free to a slightly larger twin room. The room has sealed windows, so the air conditioning was running constantly for ventilation. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and disposable slippers were provided. The hotel's location is quite close to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, with many restaurants and shopping malls nearby. It's also near Victoria Harbour, making it convenient for getting around, especially for solo travelers. Overall, it's pretty good.

This hotel is just right for solo travelers. It's super easy to get to – just exit A1 from Sai Ying Pun Station, turn right, and it's a short walk away. The hotel and rooms felt a bit dated. My only complaints are the long wait for the elevator in the morning and the non-functioning refrigerator in the room; these definitely need improvement. Aside from that, everything else was fine. The front desk staff were very helpful, and check-in was quick. Plus, there was no deposit required, which made everything very smooth. The location is excellent for sightseeing. It's conveniently located with easy access to Central and Tsim Sha Tsui via subway and bus, making it perfect for a few days of touring. There are also plenty of restaurants, a 7-Eleven, and a Wellcome supermarket right near the hotel. I highly recommend the night view from Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park, which is about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. It was incredibly beautiful, and since there weren't many people, it felt like a hidden gem for night views.

Very convenient location to TST station where nearest exit N5 (stairs access only) to hotel. If you have big luggage, you can via iSquare mall, take escalator to ground level and cross the road to hotel. The renovated room is spacious with 2 double beds. But there is only 1 seater in the room and no bottled water or laundry bag provided. Toiletries are provided via dispensers. Counter staff at check in can be more polite. I will choose this hotel for it's location and room size. Many food options like Red Tea, Bakehouse, dim sum, wanton mee, chagee around. K11 mall just behind hotel. Self check in and out counter is available.

Location is about 15 mins walk to nearest MTR station , bad luck for us to walk under 35c heat. The free 1 person breakfast voucher came as a surprise , the food was good and representative of HK culture. The room is small as usual for moderate hotel room, not much walking space after putting our suitcases but it compensated with the strong air conditioning and good water pressure shower. Overall it is a decent hotel in relatively convenient location (wished the MTR is much closer like 5 minutes walk) :D

This hotel is right by MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Exit 4, so you can walk directly to the MTR station. It's also close to shopping areas. Around the side of the hotel, there are bus and van stops, which is incredibly convenient. I stayed for 2 nights and daily housekeeping was provided. The hotel doesn't offer complimentary bottled water. The room wasn't too small. I didn't take any photos inside the hotel, but if I go back, I'd definitely stay here again.

The room size is very spacious for Hong Kong standards, and the night view is stunning. Being on the 25th floor, overlooking the Hong Kong skyline at night is truly comfortable. The price was also reasonable. I didn't have breakfast, so I can't comment on that, but the location is excellent.

The room isn't very big, especially the bed, which is quite short. The only difference between a king-size and twin beds is whether the two bases are pushed together or separated to form a 'king.' If you stretch out, your feet will hang off the end, so I'd guess the bed is only about 1.7 meters long. Also, the air conditioning is quite noisy; the central AC fan makes a fair bit of noise at night. The hotel's location is decent though, only a 5-10 minute walk from the subway exit.

The hotel's location is excellent. You can take the A21 bus from the airport directly to the hotel entrance. If you're over 65, you get a 50% discount on the bus fare, which is about HKD 15. It's a good idea to set up your Hong Kong Alipay or WeChat Pay at the airport to avoid the hassle of buying and refunding an Octopus card. The room was clean, and the facilities were generally good, though the electric kettle was quite old and had some limescale on the outside. I wish the coffee cups were larger ceramic ones; they were too small to brew proper coffee, and you'd only get a sip or two. Toiletries and mineral water are not provided in the room, so you need to buy them. Water from the machine in the lobby on the first floor costs HKD 3 a bottle, which is much cheaper than buying from a convenience store. When leaving for the airport, the bus stop is near Mong Kok MTR station. If you don't have much luggage, you can take one MTR stop to transfer there. Overall, I'm satisfied with the hotel.

Great location! It's a five-minute walk to Times Square from where the shuttle drops you off, and there are plenty of food options nearby. Causeway Bay MTR station is about a seven or eight-minute walk. For the price, it's really good value, even cheaper than hotels on the mainland. Highly recommend this hotel for its convenience and space, especially for Hong Kong standards! Easy Transit: Very convenient to get to from the airport via the A31 bus. Great Amenities: Plenty of local food options and a supermarket below the hotel. Spacious Rooms: Considerably spacious for this price point compared to other Hong Kong hotels. Traveled to Hong Kong with my wife and father-in-law to visit relatives. I pre-booked a triple room, and overall it exceeded my expectations. Although the hotel is over a decade old, it's very well-maintained and the hygiene conditions are excellent. The service was extremely warm and the location was fantastic. Great value for money, and my father-in-law was very satisfied too. One minor issue was: The 'triple room' was essentially a twin room with an extra bed. However, why were the original twin beds pushed completely together? It was almost indistinguishable from a single large bed. One major issue was: The air conditioning in the room remained quite cold no matter what I did, and the noise from the AC was quite loud. I managed to tough it out and eventually fell asleep, thinking I'd contact the front desk if I couldn't sleep, or even pull out the room card to cut the power.

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How It Works in Hong Kong

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

In Hong Kong, there is no formal tax refund system like the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in some other countries, because most goods and services are already tax-free. That means — no extra tax to claim back!

However, here’s how you can enjoy duty-free shopping when departing from Hong Kong International Airport:

🛍️ While Shopping:

  • Shop at duty-free stores in the city or at the airport. These stores typically sell items like alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, and luxury goods at tax-exempt prices.
  • Look for shops marked as “duty-free” or “tax-exempt” — no special paperwork or tax forms are needed.
  • You may be asked to show your passport and boarding pass at the counter to confirm your eligibility.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive at the Hong Kong International Airport early to allow time for duty-free shopping before boarding.
  • Head to the departure area, where you’ll find a wide range of duty-free outlets.
  • Pay as usual — the tax-free price is already reflected at checkout, with no refund process required.

🧠 Tip:
Since Hong Kong has no VAT or sales tax, there’s no need to apply for a refund — you’re already saving with every purchase. Just be sure to follow customs regulations in your home country for any duty-free goods you bring back.

🔥 Hong Kong Shopping Tips for Tourists

tax return

Source: iMoney.my

Planning to shop in Hong Kong? Here are some helpful tips I wish I knew before my trip — learn from my experience and make the most of your shopping spree! 👇

🔖 No Need to Show Your Passport at Most Stores

Since Hong Kong doesn’t have a sales tax or tourist refund system, you usually won’t need your passport when shopping in the city — unless you’re at a duty-free store in the airport.

🗃️ Stay Organized with Your Purchases

Even though there’s no refund paperwork to manage, keeping your receipts can be helpful — especially for electronics, warranties, or returning goods.

🛍️ Plan High-Value Purchases for Airport Duty-Free

If you’re planning to buy alcohol, fragrances, or luxury goods, check prices at airport duty-free shops. Sometimes they offer better deals than city stores, especially for international brands.

Be Aware of Customs Restrictions

While you don’t need to declare anything in Hong Kong, your home country may have limits on duty-free imports. Keep your goods accessible in case customs officials want to inspect them when you return home.

📍 Shop at Reputable Stores

Stick to well-known retailers or trusted chains, especially for electronics and high-end items. Look for warranty support and clear return policies.

📱 Use Translation Apps if Needed

English is widely spoken in Hong Kong, but in smaller shops or markets, a translation app like Google Translate can come in handy.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many shops accept international cards, so paying with one that offers favorable exchange rates and no extra charges will help you save more than exchanging cash.
