Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from a fantastic shopping spree in Hong Kong – and I’m still buzzing from the amazing deals! From skincare and electronics to local snacks and designer labels, Hong Kong is a true paradise for shoppers. But here’s a tip that many international visitors might not know: you can actually get a tax refund on your shopping!

Yes, under Hong Kong’s Tax Refund Scheme for tourists, eligible travellers can claim back the consumption tax paid on purchases made at participating retailers. It’s a great way to save even more while enjoying everything this vibrant city has to offer. So if you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong and shopping is on your list, don’t miss this opportunity to claim your tax refund. I’ll guide you through how the refund process works, who’s eligible, and how to claim it smoothly before you head home. ✨🛍💳

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemptions in Hong Kong

When shopping in Hong Kong, you’ll be glad to know that the city has no value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) on most items. That’s right — prices are generally tax-free, which means what you see is what you pay!

However, if you're shopping at designated duty-free stores or purchasing items for export, you may be eligible for certain tax exemptions or refunds depending on the store’s policy and your departure point. 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of dim sum or egg tarts 🥢🍮
✅ Extra skincare, electronics, or luxury goods to take home 💄📱
✅ And plenty of souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales Tax in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram

Here’s some great news for shoppers: Hong Kong does not impose a Sales and Service Tax (SST), VAT, or GST on most goods and services. That means:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

Whether you’re browsing luxury brands at Harbour City, exploring boutiques in Causeway Bay, or picking up local finds at Mong Kok’s street markets, the price you see is usually the price you pay.

🧠 Tip: While most goods are tax-free, be aware of duty-free regulations if you’re planning to bring items back home. Always check your country’s customs limits to avoid unexpected charges.

📜 Understanding the Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Hong Kong?

Victoria Harbour

Hong Kong is known for its no VAT or GST policy, meaning most goods and services are already tax-free. However, traditional tax refund systems like those in other countries do not apply here, as Hong Kong does not impose sales tax on general consumer purchases.

Still, here’s what international visitors should know:

✅ 1. General Goods

Clothing, electronics, accessories, souvenirs, and skincare products are generally sold without any added consumption tax. No refunds are necessary because the price you pay is already tax-free.

✅ 2. Duty-Free Purchases

When departing from Hong Kong International Airport, you can shop at duty-free outlets offering alcohol, tobacco, fragrances, and luxury items at special tax-exempt prices.

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • There is no Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in Hong Kong, as the city operates a low-tax, free-port economy.
  • If you're shopping at a duty-free store, ensure your items are packed according to airline rules and declare them if required by your home country’s customs.
  • Always check whether a store is duty-free licensed if you’re specifically seeking tax-exempt deals.

🧠 Tip: Since prices are already competitive and tax-free, Hong Kong is one of the best places in Asia for high-value shopping without the hassle of refund paperwork!

Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Hong Kong?

Unlike many countries, Hong Kong does not impose VAT, GST, or Sales and Service Tax (SST) on most goods and services. As such, there is no formal Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in place — because most retail purchases are already tax-free.

However, if you're shopping at duty-free stores or purchasing goods for export, here are some things to know:

✅ You are automatically eligible for tax-free shopping if you are:

  • A non-Hong Kong resident visiting as a tourist
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Departing Hong Kong by air from the Hong Kong International Airport

✅ Duty-Free Shopping Tips:

  • No minimum spend is required for most duty-free items (e.g. alcohol, tobacco, fragrances).
  • Duty-free purchases must be taken out of Hong Kong and are subject to import limits in your destination country.
  • Keep your passport handy when shopping at duty-free stores in the airport — it may be required at checkout.

✈️ Important: While Hong Kong doesn't offer tax refunds, prices are already highly competitive thanks to its free-port status. Still, if you're flying internationally, be aware of customs regulations at your next destination, especially for items like alcohol, cosmetics, and electronics.

Facilities: Very clean, but a bit old, as expected from a long-standing five-star hotel. Cleanliness: Quite clean, and they upgraded us for free to a deluxe king room. The bed was huge, and the room was also very spacious, which is truly rare in such a prime downtown location. Environment: The location is excellent. Right outside the hotel is a bustling area, and there's a shopping mall downstairs. You can buy anything you need and satisfy all your dining, drinking, and shopping cravings without even leaving the building. I really love the mall downstairs, haha, all my favorite brands are there. Service: The service was very good. As soon as we got out of the taxi, hotel staff quickly came out to help us with our luggage. Even when we went down late for breakfast, the restaurant thoughtfully reminded those who hadn't come down yet to hurry up and eat, instead of rushing people out as soon as the time was up. Overall, our three-day stay was a pleasant experience. My child also really enjoyed it; we walked her around the streets next to the hotel, looking for the 'horse' from the Year of the Horse. It was a lot of fun.

The room was spotless and the soundproofing was excellent! The location is also fantastic, just a two-minute walk from the subway station. The lobby always smelled faintly of fig perfume! The lady who checked me in at the front desk was incredibly sweet and friendly. I was in such a hurry I didn't catch her name... I'll definitely choose to stay here again next time.

Service is great - front desk able to give useful information around the area. The concierge man was even able to give recommendations of local eateries around the hotel. Facilities is top-notch. Room is spacious and clean. Housekeeping is very attentive to our consumption of water in the hotel and replenish lots of bottled water for us - really appreciated! Food during breakfast is good though not over the top. I like the local flavour of making your own tea/coffee

This hotel is located in the Grand Century Place, right above Mong Kok East MTR station. You can access it directly from Exit D, which is super convenient. After a concert, I was able to grab some McDonald's from the mall even past 11 PM, which was a huge plus. **Environment:** Being inside a shopping mall is great for browsing and shopping. Mannings and Watsons are on the first floor, Muji is on the second, and there's a supermarket on the fifth, along with plenty of restaurant choices. There's even a Mihn's just outside the hotel, so finding food is never an issue. **Hygiene:** They provide toothbrushes, so no need to bring your own. Housekeeping is very prompt daily. The only thing is there's no separate shower, so you have to shower in the tub. They have filtered drinking water available, but no bottled water. **Service:** They try their best to accommodate all requests. I asked for cutlery at 11 PM and it was delivered very quickly. It's also really convenient for concerts at Kai Tak; just three stops on the Tuen Ma Line. Getting back to the hotel after the show was quick too. Excellent! I'd definitely choose Royal Plaza again next time!

The Regal Hotel was the biggest surprise of our Greater Bay Area trip, exceeding all expectations! While an older hotel, it's very well-maintained, spotlessly clean, and the bedding and mattress were incredibly comfortable and soft. The absolute best part is its superb location in Causeway Bay, offering excellent transport links. We arrived from Zhuhai via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, and the A11 bus takes you directly to the hotel. For our return to mainland China, there's a CTS (China Travel Service) bus ticket office right next to the hotel entrance. You can buy tickets a day in advance for easy access to Shenzhen Port, Shenzhen Airport, and various cities in Guangdong. During our stay in Hong Kong, we walked to Sogo, Hysan Place, and Times Square, and there were plenty of dining options nearby. To get to Wan Chai Pier for the Star Ferry, you can catch a 'ding ding' tram right outside the hotel, and the MTR station is also very close, making getting around incredibly convenient. Finally, a special thanks to the hotel for providing a birthday cake 🎂 and red wine for my friend, which made for a wonderful birthday celebration in Hong Kong.

I consider the Royal Park Hotel in Hong Kong my second home. Every time I'm back in Hong Kong for something, I stay here. Although it's a bit far from Hong Kong Island, the bus stop right downstairs is super convenient, and you can even get directly to the airport, which I think is just as good as the MTR. The environment is great, the service is good, and the rooms are clean, tidy, and very spacious! I'm even planning to stay here for six months as a temporary过渡 accommodation when I move back to Hong Kong, to make the transition to renting or buying a place smoother.

I took my parents to Hong Kong, and the Nina Hotel was fantastic! The room was spacious and bright, and the service was excellent. The front desk staff proactively upgraded us from a lower-floor sea view room to a higher-floor one, offering stunning panoramic views of the Hong Kong cityscape right from our window. It was amazing! I've stayed at the Nina Hotel every time I've visited Hong Kong for the past three years because the location is so convenient for transportation, dining, and shopping.

It's about a 10-minute walk from Terminal 1. The hotel is quite large, and the rooms are spacious by Hong Kong standards. There are purified water dispensers along the corridors where you can refill your bottle. Breakfast was good, with changfen, and made-to-order omelets and noodles, though the auntie making them was a bit lukewarm in her attitude. Other than that, everything else was pretty good, and you can see the airport from the room.

Room: The standard room is quite small; I couldn't open my suitcase on the floor, so I had to put it on the bed. Booked two standard rooms for 2 adults and 2 children. Facilities: The slippers were thinner than paper. You can heat water, but honestly, my expectations for HK were already low. Cleanliness: It was acceptable, and the shower had good water pressure. Environment: The surrounding area has convenient transportation, with a supermarket right outside and a metro station within walking distance.

The location is unbeatable, with everything you need right outside the door – super convenient. K11 is just a 10-minute walk away. To be honest, besides the great location and good service attitude, everything else was pretty mediocre. The room wasn't very clean; there were tiny flying insects and what looked like chopped green onions on the floor? Perhaps left by the previous guest.

⭐️Wonderful Stay for Us at Kimberley Hotel My wife and I had an excellent stay at the Kimberley Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. Our room was exceptionally spacious, spotlessly clean, and filled with natural light from the large windows, which made it feel warm and inviting. The staff were consistently friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome throughout our visit. The location is perfect—just a short 5‑minute walk to the subway station, surrounded by plenty of restaurants, and right in the heart of great shopping. Overall, the hotel offered everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. We would happily return and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Hong Kong.

Huge thanks to Trip.com for recommending this hotel! I arrived after a long, exhausting journey, literally with sweat stinging my eyes and tears streaming, and then the stark temperature difference between the lobby and outside made my nose run – I was an absolute mess. The front desk attendant, a lovely young woman, gently offered me tissues. Embarrassed, I stepped aside to compose myself. When I returned to the desk, she told me that even though it wasn't check-in time, she saw an available room and was happy to check me in. The bathroom and shower in my room were incredibly bright, comfortable, and cozy. The bedroom design was simple yet elegant. I even sent videos of the room to my family and friends, and they all loved it! One night, I returned late after a performance. The hotel had left a fresh bottle of water and a warm welcome card right where I could see them. When I got into the elevator, my key card wasn't working consistently. The front desk staff on duty checked the card, confirmed it was fine, and then came out from behind the counter to personally show me, suggesting I rub it against the sensor a few times – which worked! The amazing cleaning staff tidied my room twice a day when I was out, covering my used cup and organizing all my bathroom items. When I chatted with one of them, she simply said it was 'what she was supposed to do!' The room felt especially cozy and peaceful in the afternoons, making it easy to fall asleep. This hotel is quiet and so comfortable!

Terrible. So bad I didn't use the bathroom to shower for two days. 1. **Communication difficulties:** I booked three rooms through two different channels. After checking into two rooms and realizing how poor the conditions were, I tried to negotiate with the hotel to keep those two but cancel the third one. The hotel refused. Trip.com intervened to mediate, but the hotel dragged its feet, claiming they needed to contact senior management, and eventually still refused. 2. **Moldy smell in the room.** 3. **Small room, tiny shower, and very hard bed.** 4. **Breakfast for HKD 80 per person:** The front desk said it was semi-buffet with à la carte options. In the morning, I discovered it was a full buffet, but with a very, very limited selection, mostly staple foods. Comparable to a budget hotel on the mainland. 5. **Extremely poor soundproofing:** Between 8 AM and 8:30 AM, I was woken up by the sounds of neighbors leaving their rooms and talking. 6. **No toiletries in the room; very thin slippers.** 7. **No charging outlets by the bed:** The outlets were blocked behind a cabinet filled with杂物 (miscellaneous items), so I had to move the cabinet to charge. Otherwise, I had to use the hairdryer's charging port in the bathroom.

Five-star review! (^ω^)👍🏻 The hotel environment is great, the room is spacious enough, and the cleanliness is excellent. Having a direct drinking water dispenser is very convenient, and it also comes with a mini-fridge, a safe, and an iron. The hotel staff are very enthusiastic. The cleaning lady was especially kind and even told us about fun places to visit and how to get around using public transport. The location is superb! Across the road is the International Shopping Centre and Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station Exit C1. Next to the shopping center, there's a street with a Hong Kong-style 'cha chaan teng' (tea restaurant) that has lots of delicious food – we went there four times during our four-night stay! 😂 Chungking Mansions and Mirador Mansion are right next door. Jenny Bakery for Jenny's Cookies is on the second floor of Mirador Mansion, just a few minutes' walk away. However, you need to go early to queue, preferably before 9 AM, and be prepared to pay with cash. It's also very close to Victoria Harbour's Avenue of Stars and the Hong Kong Museum of Art, about a 10-minute walk. It's super convenient to stroll along the Avenue of Stars in the morning and enjoy the night view and light show in the evening. If I visit again, I would definitely choose this hotel!

Good evening. This hotel, The Kowloon Hotel, has an excellent location. The MTR (subway) entrance is right outside, and it's just a 5-minute walk to Victoria Harbour – simply turn left after exiting the main entrance and walk straight ahead (it's about 5 minutes, not counting traffic lights). If you walk a bit further, the third bus stop is for the A21, which goes directly to the airport. To the right of The Kowloon Hotel's main entrance, there's a restaurant called Silver Dragon Restaurant, famous for its roasted goose leg. In Hong Kong, roasted meat dishes, coffee, and milk tea are almost always available for free with your meal. However, in my personal opinion, this hotel is very expensive. They wouldn't even provide two bottles of mineral water without charge, and you have to pay for toothbrushes and combs. The breakfast I had cost me HKD 148, which I paid myself. So it really depends on your personal preferences. If location is your priority, then this place is fine. Everyone needs to think clearly about what they truly want. Thank you all.

The location is super convenient! It's about a 7-8 minute walk from West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station, and just a 3-minute walk from Austin Station Exit F. Jordan Station is also nearby. Downstairs, there's a Wellcome supermarket and Cafe de Coral, and the alley opposite is full of eateries. Temple Street Night Market, Harbour City, and Victoria Harbour are all within walking distance, making sightseeing and dining incredibly hassle-free. The room is spacious for Hong Kong standards. The 1.8-meter bed is big enough for a family of three, and you can even lay a 28-inch suitcase flat. The bedding is clean, and there are USB charging ports, so you don't always need an adapter. The bathroom is small, but there's plenty of hot water. The service is decent; the front desk staff speaks Mandarin, and you can store your luggage for free after check-out. The facilities are a bit old but perfectly functional; the air conditioning and TV work fine. From the higher floors, you can see Kowloon Park or Victoria Harbour, and the night view is quite nice. Overall, this place is great for a trip to Hong Kong. The transportation, dining, and sightseeing are all convenient, and the room is practical, making it ideal for tourists looking for an easy stay.

I think the main draw of this hotel is that the rooms are generally larger compared to similar hotels in Hong Kong. It's actually one stop away from Times Square, specifically located near Tin Hau station. Near the Tin Hau MTR station, there's a delicious restaurant called Sister Wah Beef Brisket Noodles, which many celebrities like Eason Chan, Chow Yun-Fat, and Bosco Wong have visited. It's been a Michelin-starred restaurant for many years, I believe. Overall, I just feel this room offers great value for money. For around 1000 HKD, even on a weekend, and especially in the Causeway Bay area, it has a king-sized bed (1.8 meters), which is quite convenient if you're traveling with children.

The room was clean and tidy, no complaints other than its small size. The shower had great water pressure, and it was a proper separate shower stall, not one of those old-fashioned shower curtains where you have to stand awkwardly in a bathtub. The housekeeping staff were enthusiastic and friendly, and the front desk ladies were very nice. The lobby offered free tea and milk tea, and they also sold fresh bread made by the hotel's own baker. In every aspect, it's much better than the equally rated 4-star Kowloon Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. Highly recommended!

Traveling during Chinese New Year, it was a quick transit. The hotel's location is excellent, and we were especially thrilled to get a top-floor room with an unbeatable night view. However, when it comes to value for money, there are some regrets. The facilities, cleanliness, and price don't quite match up. The outdoor terrace Jacuzzi had shade issues, the toilet plumbing was old and dilapidated, the gap between the bed and the toilet was too small (only 30cm), and there was hair and trash behind the door that hadn't been cleaned properly.

The room was surprisingly good! It was on a high floor and, despite not having windows, the soundproofing was excellent, making the room incredibly quiet. I was really pleased with how spacious the room was, especially for Hong Kong standards. After we left, housekeeping came to clean right away, and they did a great job. Downstairs, there are plenty of options for food and drinks, and the surrounding buildings also have many eateries. However, for shopping, you'd need to go elsewhere as there aren't many options nearby. Using Alipay or WeChat for the MTR (subway) was very convenient, but for the 'ding ding' trams, you'll need cash or an Octopus card. I'd definitely book this place again next time and hope they maintain their high quality.

I stayed at The Harbourview – Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong as a solo traveler and had a very comfortable experience overall. The hotel is located in Wan Chai, just a short walk from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and around 10 minutes from Wan Chai MTR station, making it easy to travel around Hong Kong. The room was clean, modern, and compact—typical for Hong Kong—but perfectly comfortable for one person. Some rooms even offer a beautiful view of Victoria Harbour, which makes the stay feel more special, especially at night. The hotel provides reliable Wi-Fi, comfortable bedding, and essential amenities like a safe, tea and coffee facilities, and air conditioning. One thing I appreciated as a solo traveler was the quiet and safe environment. The area around the hotel felt secure even when returning late, and the staff were professional and helpful whenever I needed assistance. Many guests also praise the location and the friendly service provided by the staff. Overall, The Harbourview offers excellent value for money in Hong Kong, especially for solo travelers looking for a clean, comfortable hotel in a convenient location without paying luxury prices. ⭐ Rating: 4.3 / 5 ✔ Great location in Wan Chai ✔ Clean and comfortable rooms ✔ Friendly staff ✔ Good value for solo travelers

Facilities: The hotel facilities are just average, and the hotel is quite old. This seems to be pretty standard for hotels in Hong Kong. Hygiene: The hotel hygiene is okay, but I don't understand why they only clean once if you stay for several days, or once every two days. Environment: It's alright. Service: The hotel service isn't great. I stay in Hong Kong frequently, and the service here is quite subpar. The luggage storage was the most troublesome part.

Spent 6 nights here over Chinese New Year, and I can honestly say this hotel embodies my ideal 5-star experience. When booking, the prime location in Tsim Sha Tsui was a major draw. Of course, I was also captivated by the opulent lobby (from photos) – as someone who appreciates aesthetics, I was totally sold. And then the pink room keycards arrived, and they completely stole my heart! Upon arrival, the hotel exterior seemed a little dated. However, the longer I stayed, the more I realized that the service is truly its soul. As I lugged my suitcases into the lobby, I'd barely managed two or three steps up the staircase before a bellhop swiftly came over to help – incredibly observant. That staircase really is a bit of a design flaw, though. During check-in, I requested a high-floor room. The front desk agent patiently and meticulously discussed options, asking if I minded a corner room or a different bed type (a king-sized bed). After declining, I was given a corner room and, to my surprise, complimentary first-round mini-bar drinks. We didn't realize, and thought even the snacks and chocolates were free since there were no price tags or labels. When I called the front desk to clarify, another agent graciously said it was her fault for not explaining properly and that we didn't need to pay – it was a truly heartwarming gesture. Every day, when leaving the hotel, I'd encounter staff cleaning rooms who would smile and greet me. And whenever we exited through the parking garage door, someone was always there to open it for us. The concierge could even help book hotels for firework viewing. One morning, the toilet stopped flushing. No exaggeration, within 5 minutes of my call, a service attendant and engineer arrived, and it was fixed in 10 minutes. That evening, I received an apology letter along with a complimentary bottle of wine and chocolates – at that moment, I knew I would choose this hotel again on my next visit to Hong Kong. There's a pool. The gym equipment is a bit limited and outdated, but everything else is fine. On the first day of Chinese New Year, the hotel even arranged a lion dance performance, which was a lovely unexpected bonus. I'll definitely be back to this hotel if I get the chance again!

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How It Works in Hong Kong

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

In Hong Kong, there is no formal tax refund system like the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in some other countries, because most goods and services are already tax-free. That means — no extra tax to claim back!

However, here’s how you can enjoy duty-free shopping when departing from Hong Kong International Airport:

🛍️ While Shopping:

  • Shop at duty-free stores in the city or at the airport. These stores typically sell items like alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, and luxury goods at tax-exempt prices.
  • Look for shops marked as “duty-free” or “tax-exempt” — no special paperwork or tax forms are needed.
  • You may be asked to show your passport and boarding pass at the counter to confirm your eligibility.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive at the Hong Kong International Airport early to allow time for duty-free shopping before boarding.
  • Head to the departure area, where you’ll find a wide range of duty-free outlets.
  • Pay as usual — the tax-free price is already reflected at checkout, with no refund process required.

🧠 Tip:
Since Hong Kong has no VAT or sales tax, there’s no need to apply for a refund — you’re already saving with every purchase. Just be sure to follow customs regulations in your home country for any duty-free goods you bring back.

🏪 Duty-Free and Tax-Free Shopping in Hong Kong – Where to Go?

tax

Hong Kong is a shopper’s paradise with no VAT or sales tax, so you can enjoy tax-free prices across the city — no forms, no refund queues!

Here are some top spots loved by tourists for duty-free or tax-free shopping:

🛍️ Harbour City (Tsim Sha Tsui) – One of Hong Kong’s largest shopping malls, offering international luxury brands, cosmetics, and designer fashion
📱 Wan Chai Computer Centre / Mong Kok Electronics Market – Ideal for electronics, gadgets, and accessories at competitive prices
💄 Sasa / Bonjour / Watsons / Mannings – Popular chains for skincare, cosmetics, beauty tools, and personal care items
👗 Causeway Bay (Times Square, Hysan Place) – A bustling shopping district with a mix of high-street brands and luxury boutiques
🎁 Ladies’ Market / Stanley Market / PMQ – Great for souvenirs, local crafts, fashion, and unique Hong Kong-designed gifts

🔥 Hong Kong Shopping Tips for Tourists

tax return

Planning to shop in Hong Kong? Here are some helpful tips I wish I knew before my trip — learn from my experience and make the most of your shopping spree! 👇

🔖 No Need to Show Your Passport at Most Stores

Since Hong Kong doesn’t have a sales tax or tourist refund system, you usually won’t need your passport when shopping in the city — unless you’re at a duty-free store in the airport.

🗃️ Stay Organized with Your Purchases

Even though there’s no refund paperwork to manage, keeping your receipts can be helpful — especially for electronics, warranties, or returning goods.

🛍️ Plan High-Value Purchases for Airport Duty-Free

If you’re planning to buy alcohol, fragrances, or luxury goods, check prices at airport duty-free shops. Sometimes they offer better deals than city stores, especially for international brands.

Be Aware of Customs Restrictions

While you don’t need to declare anything in Hong Kong, your home country may have limits on duty-free imports. Keep your goods accessible in case customs officials want to inspect them when you return home.

📍 Shop at Reputable Stores

Stick to well-known retailers or trusted chains, especially for electronics and high-end items. Look for warranty support and clear return policies.

📱 Use Translation Apps if Needed

English is widely spoken in Hong Kong, but in smaller shops or markets, a translation app like Google Translate can come in handy.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many shops accept international cards, so paying with one that offers favorable exchange rates and no extra charges will help you save more than exchanging cash.

FAQs: Tax-Free Shopping in Hong Kong

  • Does Hong Kong have a Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS)?

No, Hong Kong does not operate a Tourist Refund Scheme because it does not impose VAT, GST, or sales tax on most goods and services. This means that retail prices are already tax-free, and there is no need to apply for a refund.
  • Who is eligible for tax-free shopping in Hong Kong?

All shoppers — including international tourists — automatically enjoy tax-free prices in Hong Kong. No special documents, registration, or tax refund forms are required when purchasing goods.
  • Is there a minimum spending amount to qualify for tax-free shopping?

No minimum spend is required. Since there is no sales tax in Hong Kong, all shoppers can enjoy tax-free prices regardless of how much they spend.
  • Can I claim a tax refund at the airport in Hong Kong?

No tax refund is necessary or available at the airport because goods in Hong Kong are already sold without any consumption tax. However, you can shop at duty-free stores at the Hong Kong International Airport before departure for additional savings on selected items such as alcohol, tobacco, fragrances, and luxury goods.
