Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from a fantastic shopping spree in Hong Kong – and I’m still buzzing from the amazing deals! From skincare and electronics to local snacks and designer labels, Hong Kong is a true paradise for shoppers. But here’s a tip that many international visitors might not know: you can actually get a tax refund on your shopping!

Yes, under Hong Kong’s Tax Refund Scheme for tourists, eligible travellers can claim back the consumption tax paid on purchases made at participating retailers. It’s a great way to save even more while enjoying everything this vibrant city has to offer. So if you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong and shopping is on your list, don’t miss this opportunity to claim your tax refund. I’ll guide you through how the refund process works, who’s eligible, and how to claim it smoothly before you head home. ✨🛍💳

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemptions in Hong Kong

When shopping in Hong Kong, you’ll be glad to know that the city has no value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) on most items. That’s right — prices are generally tax-free, which means what you see is what you pay!

However, if you're shopping at designated duty-free stores or purchasing items for export, you may be eligible for certain tax exemptions or refunds depending on the store’s policy and your departure point. 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of dim sum or egg tarts 🥢🍮
✅ Extra skincare, electronics, or luxury goods to take home 💄📱
✅ And plenty of souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales Tax in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram

Here’s some great news for shoppers: Hong Kong does not impose a Sales and Service Tax (SST), VAT, or GST on most goods and services. That means:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

Whether you’re browsing luxury brands at Harbour City, exploring boutiques in Causeway Bay, or picking up local finds at Mong Kok’s street markets, the price you see is usually the price you pay.

🧠 Tip: While most goods are tax-free, be aware of duty-free regulations if you’re planning to bring items back home. Always check your country’s customs limits to avoid unexpected charges.

📜 Understanding the Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Hong Kong?

Victoria Harbour

Hong Kong is known for its no VAT or GST policy, meaning most goods and services are already tax-free. However, traditional tax refund systems like those in other countries do not apply here, as Hong Kong does not impose sales tax on general consumer purchases.

Still, here’s what international visitors should know:

✅ 1. General Goods

Clothing, electronics, accessories, souvenirs, and skincare products are generally sold without any added consumption tax. No refunds are necessary because the price you pay is already tax-free.

✅ 2. Duty-Free Purchases

When departing from Hong Kong International Airport, you can shop at duty-free outlets offering alcohol, tobacco, fragrances, and luxury items at special tax-exempt prices.

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • There is no Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in Hong Kong, as the city operates a low-tax, free-port economy.
  • If you're shopping at a duty-free store, ensure your items are packed according to airline rules and declare them if required by your home country’s customs.
  • Always check whether a store is duty-free licensed if you’re specifically seeking tax-exempt deals.

🧠 Tip: Since prices are already competitive and tax-free, Hong Kong is one of the best places in Asia for high-value shopping without the hassle of refund paperwork!

Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Hong Kong?

Unlike many countries, Hong Kong does not impose VAT, GST, or Sales and Service Tax (SST) on most goods and services. As such, there is no formal Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in place — because most retail purchases are already tax-free.

However, if you're shopping at duty-free stores or purchasing goods for export, here are some things to know:

✅ You are automatically eligible for tax-free shopping if you are:

  • A non-Hong Kong resident visiting as a tourist
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Departing Hong Kong by air from the Hong Kong International Airport

✅ Duty-Free Shopping Tips:

  • No minimum spend is required for most duty-free items (e.g. alcohol, tobacco, fragrances).
  • Duty-free purchases must be taken out of Hong Kong and are subject to import limits in your destination country.
  • Keep your passport handy when shopping at duty-free stores in the airport — it may be required at checkout.

✈️ Important: While Hong Kong doesn't offer tax refunds, prices are already highly competitive thanks to its free-port status. Still, if you're flying internationally, be aware of customs regulations at your next destination, especially for items like alcohol, cosmetics, and electronics.

This is an older hotel. I chose it because the rooms are slightly larger than average, and we were traveling with a child, so we needed an extra bed. As for service, there's nothing for us mainlanders. I didn't see a single smile during my entire stay. They're all smiles and Chinese etiquette for foreigners, though. We were checking out at the same time as some foreigners, and the concierge helped them with their luggage to their car, but didn't even acknowledge us, let alone offer help. I initially booked for one night, and the next day I went to the front desk to extend my stay. I asked if an upgrade was possible. An impatient female receptionist told me the hotel was fully booked. I pointed out that I could see rooms available for booking on Ctrip, and asked why she was lying. She then said I had already booked a deluxe room, so there was no upgrade available. Posters celebrating the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return were plastered all over the streets of Hong Kong. It's been 29 years, and I've visited over ten times, yet they still show no goodwill towards mainlanders, only resistance and disgust. I really want to ask, where does your sense of superiority come from? Is the money spent by mainlanders not real money? Was my room rate significantly cheaper? I doubt they'd give me such a discount, so why the lack of friendly treatment? After a few days, my child complained that his chest was itchy. I saw some small red rashes. Later, my husband said his back was itchy, and I saw similar small red rashes. My husband suggested it might be heat rash. Our family didn't want to argue with the hotel and ruin our mood over this; we were too tired and hot, so we didn't pursue it further. Hong Kong was scorching hot these past few days, hot enough to make you dizzy. Due to this unusual weather, I'd advise against visiting at this time of year. The location is right by Harbour City, making it the closest hotel to the Star Ferry. Besides its good location, it has no other advantages. However, this geographical location, being in Tsim Sha Tsui with too many tourists and very close to the West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station (under 40 HKD by taxi), means the shopping environment and service attitude are not as good as on Hong Kong Island. Next time, I will definitely choose to stay and shop/eat on Hong Kong Island. I will not choose this hotel again. I wasn't even in the mood to take a single photo to showcase the hotel. The only picture I have is of the distant sea viewed from the window.

The location is super convenient! It's just one stop from West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station to Tsim Sha Tsui East, and the hotel is a short walk from the exit. The staff were really welcoming and polite. Plus, there are tons of great places to eat, drink, and have fun nearby. On Fridays and Saturdays, if you cross the road to the waterfront, you can even catch a drone show!

I booked a corner king room, and it was incredibly spacious. The hotel's direct access to the mall was super convenient. But the best part was definitely the swimming pool – the indoor area was spotless and well-managed. Spending the summer lounging at this hotel was just perfect.

The transportation here is incredibly convenient. With Mong Kok East MTR station and a bus terminal nearby, getting around is a breeze. Don't hesitate when you see the stairs next to Mido Cafe – that's the hotel entrance. Besides the abundance of dining options in the moko mall downstairs, there are also plenty of eateries and dessert shops on Argyle Street. The first 500 meters of the walk there are covered by an indoor walkway, so you're protected from sun and rain. The room size is generous; we could easily open two suitcases. Our room even had a separate shower with excellent water pressure. The pool is right downstairs and looks very inviting and chill. We stayed for 6 nights and were very satisfied overall, but on the last night, I'm not sure if it was the towel or the sheets, but I ended up with 5 or 6 incredibly itchy red bumps on my feet (I was the only one of the three of us who got bitten, so I suspect it was the towel). This put a bit of a damper on what would have otherwise been a perfect stay.

Had a great stay at Regal Hongkong Hotel. The central Causeway Bay location is unbeatable, with malls, MTR and plenty of great food just steps away. The room was clean, comfortable and perfect for resting after our shopping sprees. We also loved the filtered water tap in the washroom which made refilling our bottles before heading out so convenient. The breakfast selection was a little limited and could be improved, but overall it was a pleasant stay. Would definitely stay again👍 The breakfast selection was a little limited and could be improved, but overall it was a pleasant stay. Would definitely stay again! 👍

Whenever I'm in Sha Tin, I stay at ALVA HOTEL BY AKOYA. This time, I had a long-term stay, about a month. **Facilities:** Relatively new, not as old as other hotels in the same price range. **Environment:** For Hong Kong, the room is quite spacious, and the layout is comfortable. **Hygiene:** Daily cleaning is prompt and thorough, and amenities are replaced frequently. **Service:** The hotel management is strict, and overall it's pretty good. The female staff at the front desk are gentle and friendly, but some male staff can be arrogant and overbearing, speaking unpleasantly and giving off an 'if you don't like it, don't stay' vibe, which is off-putting.

Let's start with the downsides. The toilet flush button required a lot of force to press, and the water output was completely random – sometimes barely any water came out. I reported this to the front desk, and they promised to send someone to look at it, but the issue was never resolved by the time I checked out. Now for the positives: First, the location is excellent. It's very convenient to Tsuen Wan West MTR station, and surrounded by shopping malls like Nina Mall and Citywalk, with many great restaurants. While going out to eat, I even passed a very large wet market, and I heard the first floor is the largest seafood market in Hong Kong. Second, the room was very spacious and comfortable. It was well-equipped, including a filtering hot water kettle for instant hot water to make tea. Third, upon check-in, I was upgraded to a sea view room, and the view from the window was beautiful. The hotel facilities are comprehensive, but the overall room lighting was a bit dim, and the hairdryer was quite old-fashioned. Overall, it's a very good value-for-money hotel, and I would still recommend it to friends. I hope the hotel can fix the inconsistent toilet flushing issue.

To us it was so convenient being able to easily walk to the hotel from the airport. The hotel was clean and the breakfast buffet was quite good. However the room was definitely showing the ages with the furniture fabrics almost giving some smell. What really disappointed us was the fact that the swimming pool closed too early at 8pm - we really wanted to use some pool time to relax. It is a transit hotel being so close to the airport so you thought the pool should be opening 22 hours a day.

This time, I was given a room on the top floor. The air conditioning was quite noisy, and the soundproofing wasn't great. If you're a light sleeper, I'd recommend bringing earplugs. They don't provide toothbrushes, toothpaste, or combs, so you'll need to bring your own. The location is super convenient, just a short walk from Jordan Station Exit D. You can also easily walk to Donki and Victoria Harbour from the hotel. I often choose to stay here when I'm in town for concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum or to visit the Xiqu Centre in West Kowloon, as it's all within walking distance.

Comfortable Stay in a Great Location We had a wonderful stay at Best Western Plus Hotel Kowloon in Tsim Sha Tsui. One of the things we appreciated most was its convenient location—everything we needed was within easy reach, from restaurants and convenience stores to MTR stations and popular attractions. Our room was clean and comfortable, providing a nice place to rest after long days of exploring Hong Kong. The staff were friendly and helpful, and check-in and check-out were smooth and hassle-free. What stood out to us was how easy it was to get around the city from the hotel. Whether we were heading to Disneyland, Victoria Harbour, or simply looking for good food nearby, the location made our trip much more enjoyable. Overall, Best Western Plus TST offered great value for money and served as the perfect home base for our Hong Kong adventure. We would definitely stay here again on our next visit!

For its price, the hotel's location, service, and facilities are all excellent. I stayed in a newly renovated twin room on the 16th floor this time, which had one double bed and one single bed. The location is incredibly convenient, just a few minutes' walk from the MTR station. The room size is definitely decent for Hong Kong; don't compare it to mainland hotel standards or luxury hotels in Hong Kong. Compared to other hotels in the same price range, it's absolutely great. I arrived around 11 PM. Due to the hotel's eco-friendly policy, toiletries aren't provided for free, but you can purchase them at the front desk. A small reusable pouch containing a two-person set costs HKD 20, which I found both cost-effective and convenient. The biggest highlight, which I must recommend and is perfect for tourists, is that my room with two beds had three bedside tables. Each table had power sockets and USB ports, and one even had wireless charging – incredibly convenient! The quality of the slippers provided in the room was also good. The large window offered a bright street view, and the desk, over a meter long, was great for placing belongings. I'm very grateful to the lovely lady at the front desk who upgraded me to this newly renovated room when she saw I arrived late at 11 PM. The cleaning lady, Chang Dandan, was also fantastic; she promptly helped me with any requests. Both were very warm and had excellent attitudes. Overall, this was a great stay. I actually read some negative reviews about cleanliness and drainage issues, but I didn't encounter any. The water pressure and drainage were both excellent, and the room was clean and hygienic. They provided two alcohol wipes for disinfection, the bedding and towels were dry, and the air conditioning worked perfectly with no noise even on low fan speed. As a very light sleeper, I slept really well. I won't upload photos of my room since I messed it up, but the public areas were clean and bright, as you can see from a couple of photos I took. Also, I recommend Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ on the first floor of the Miramar Shopping Centre opposite the hotel – it's delicious!

For a city as compact as Hong Kong, the room size at this hotel is really quite good. It's clean, hygienic, and the location couldn't be more convenient. This will definitely be my go-to hotel whenever I'm in Hong Kong! It has a pool and a great gym, though the pool is only open during the day and closes at 6 PM. Basically, only kids can handle swimming under the intense sun at that time. Another thing I found pretty useless was the kettle. The 'high-tech' kettle provided in the room was just not user-friendly for me, and my American friend felt the same way. Trying to make tea with it was such a hassle. 😂

After arriving at Kowloon Station via the Airport Express, I walked through West Kowloon Station to Austin MTR Station. Exiting from Gate F, I found the hotel immediately. The entire walk was indoors. The hotel is conveniently located near both Austin and Jordan stations, making it easy to get to Harbour City and Victoria Harbour. When I was researching hotels, I chose this one mainly because of reviews praising its cleanliness, and it definitely lived up to expectations. It was also quiet and had great service. From my room window, I could see a corner of Victoria Harbour. I happened to stay during Typhoon Hinnamnor, and it was quite comfortable to be in the hotel. Our stay at The Emperor Hotel Causeway Bay in Hong Kong was absolutely fantastic! As soon as my daughter walked in, she said she loved it. I immediately started taking photos and posted on social media about how wonderful and elegant this hotel is. We were on the 29th floor, and the large window offered stunning views of Victoria Harbour. The ceilings are high, and they provided toothbrushes, soap, coffee, and tea. On the second day, we even received a complimentary bottle of mineral water. The front desk also offers free tea, coffee, and newspapers. This hotel completely shattered my preconceptions about Hong Kong accommodation being expensive and small. The Tin Hau MTR station is super convenient for getting around. On our last day, when we stored our luggage, they even gave us two Ferrero Rocher chocolates as we left – so polite and incredibly thoughtful! My daughter and I both agreed that we'll definitely stay here again next time we visit Hong Kong! Several parents who saw my Hong Kong trip photos have asked me where we stayed, and I've been recommending The Emperor Hotel Causeway Bay without hesitation! Everyone, avoid this hotel! This is my first time leaving a negative review for a hotel. 1. The service attitude was absolutely terrible. From the moment I checked in, I said ”Hello...” but the staff didn't even bother to respond with a ”Hello” back and had a sour face the entire time. In the service industry, there should be a basic level of politeness! 2. Check-out is at 11 AM, and check-in is at 3 PM. This is an absolutely outrageous, one-sided policy. I didn't notice these times when I booked. Isn't anyone going to address this? 3. The hotel's so-called ”free shuttle” requires booking a day in advance. There was no mention of this when I checked in. You have to ask about everything yourself! It's completely hit-or-miss. 4. The young staff at the concierge desk were also unhelpful and made things difficult for guests. The next day, they wouldn't let me bring my luggage on the bus, claiming it was too big. It was just a small carry-on suitcase, how big could it be?! I said, ”Yesterday, I confirmed with the concierge staff that I could bring it on the bus.” Then the tall, slender concierge kept questioning, ”Which staff member? What's their name? Who told you that?” Am I supposed to remember the name of every staff member just to take the bus? 5. We booked a standard room, and the bedside table in the middle was as shown in the picture – make of it what you will. The soundproofing was also poor. All in all, everyone should seriously reconsider staying at this hotel! Afterwards, I searched for negative reviews about this hotel to see if anyone else had the same terrible experience. It turns out the news about this hotel is truly shocking.

I was really happy to find such a high-end hotel in a bustling area like Tsim Sha Tsui, and the cleanliness of the facilities was outstanding! The whole decor was palace-style, and the toiletries were very luxurious. There wasn't any strange odor in the room, which even as a clean freak, I really appreciated! The mattress was incredibly comfortable, and the soundproofing was excellent; I could barely hear any street noise from downstairs. It's also just a five-minute walk to the Avenue of Stars, and there are plenty of shopping and dining options nearby. I'll definitely choose The Langham Hong Kong again on my next visit.

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How It Works in Hong Kong

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

In Hong Kong, there is no formal tax refund system like the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in some other countries, because most goods and services are already tax-free. That means — no extra tax to claim back!

However, here’s how you can enjoy duty-free shopping when departing from Hong Kong International Airport:

🛍️ While Shopping:

  • Shop at duty-free stores in the city or at the airport. These stores typically sell items like alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, and luxury goods at tax-exempt prices.
  • Look for shops marked as “duty-free” or “tax-exempt” — no special paperwork or tax forms are needed.
  • You may be asked to show your passport and boarding pass at the counter to confirm your eligibility.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive at the Hong Kong International Airport early to allow time for duty-free shopping before boarding.
  • Head to the departure area, where you’ll find a wide range of duty-free outlets.
  • Pay as usual — the tax-free price is already reflected at checkout, with no refund process required.

🧠 Tip:
Since Hong Kong has no VAT or sales tax, there’s no need to apply for a refund — you’re already saving with every purchase. Just be sure to follow customs regulations in your home country for any duty-free goods you bring back.

🔥 Hong Kong Shopping Tips for Tourists

tax return

Source: iMoney.my

Planning to shop in Hong Kong? Here are some helpful tips I wish I knew before my trip — learn from my experience and make the most of your shopping spree! 👇

🔖 No Need to Show Your Passport at Most Stores

Since Hong Kong doesn’t have a sales tax or tourist refund system, you usually won’t need your passport when shopping in the city — unless you’re at a duty-free store in the airport.

🗃️ Stay Organized with Your Purchases

Even though there’s no refund paperwork to manage, keeping your receipts can be helpful — especially for electronics, warranties, or returning goods.

🛍️ Plan High-Value Purchases for Airport Duty-Free

If you’re planning to buy alcohol, fragrances, or luxury goods, check prices at airport duty-free shops. Sometimes they offer better deals than city stores, especially for international brands.

Be Aware of Customs Restrictions

While you don’t need to declare anything in Hong Kong, your home country may have limits on duty-free imports. Keep your goods accessible in case customs officials want to inspect them when you return home.

📍 Shop at Reputable Stores

Stick to well-known retailers or trusted chains, especially for electronics and high-end items. Look for warranty support and clear return policies.

📱 Use Translation Apps if Needed

English is widely spoken in Hong Kong, but in smaller shops or markets, a translation app like Google Translate can come in handy.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many shops accept international cards, so paying with one that offers favorable exchange rates and no extra charges will help you save more than exchanging cash.
