Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from a fantastic shopping spree in Hong Kong – and I’m still buzzing from the amazing deals! From skincare and electronics to local snacks and designer labels, Hong Kong is a true paradise for shoppers. But here’s a tip that many international visitors might not know: you can actually get a tax refund on your shopping!

Yes, under Hong Kong’s Tax Refund Scheme for tourists, eligible travellers can claim back the consumption tax paid on purchases made at participating retailers. It’s a great way to save even more while enjoying everything this vibrant city has to offer. So if you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong and shopping is on your list, don’t miss this opportunity to claim your tax refund. I’ll guide you through how the refund process works, who’s eligible, and how to claim it smoothly before you head home. ✨🛍💳

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemptions in Hong Kong

When shopping in Hong Kong, you’ll be glad to know that the city has no value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) on most items. That’s right — prices are generally tax-free, which means what you see is what you pay!

However, if you're shopping at designated duty-free stores or purchasing items for export, you may be eligible for certain tax exemptions or refunds depending on the store’s policy and your departure point. 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of dim sum or egg tarts 🥢🍮
✅ Extra skincare, electronics, or luxury goods to take home 💄📱
✅ And plenty of souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales Tax in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram

Here’s some great news for shoppers: Hong Kong does not impose a Sales and Service Tax (SST), VAT, or GST on most goods and services. That means:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

Whether you’re browsing luxury brands at Harbour City, exploring boutiques in Causeway Bay, or picking up local finds at Mong Kok’s street markets, the price you see is usually the price you pay.

🧠 Tip: While most goods are tax-free, be aware of duty-free regulations if you’re planning to bring items back home. Always check your country’s customs limits to avoid unexpected charges.

📜 Understanding the Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Hong Kong?

Victoria Harbour

Hong Kong is known for its no VAT or GST policy, meaning most goods and services are already tax-free. However, traditional tax refund systems like those in other countries do not apply here, as Hong Kong does not impose sales tax on general consumer purchases.

Still, here’s what international visitors should know:

✅ 1. General Goods

Clothing, electronics, accessories, souvenirs, and skincare products are generally sold without any added consumption tax. No refunds are necessary because the price you pay is already tax-free.

✅ 2. Duty-Free Purchases

When departing from Hong Kong International Airport, you can shop at duty-free outlets offering alcohol, tobacco, fragrances, and luxury items at special tax-exempt prices.

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • There is no Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in Hong Kong, as the city operates a low-tax, free-port economy.
  • If you're shopping at a duty-free store, ensure your items are packed according to airline rules and declare them if required by your home country’s customs.
  • Always check whether a store is duty-free licensed if you’re specifically seeking tax-exempt deals.

🧠 Tip: Since prices are already competitive and tax-free, Hong Kong is one of the best places in Asia for high-value shopping without the hassle of refund paperwork!

Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Hong Kong?

Unlike many countries, Hong Kong does not impose VAT, GST, or Sales and Service Tax (SST) on most goods and services. As such, there is no formal Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in place — because most retail purchases are already tax-free.

However, if you're shopping at duty-free stores or purchasing goods for export, here are some things to know:

✅ You are automatically eligible for tax-free shopping if you are:

  • A non-Hong Kong resident visiting as a tourist
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Departing Hong Kong by air from the Hong Kong International Airport

✅ Duty-Free Shopping Tips:

  • No minimum spend is required for most duty-free items (e.g. alcohol, tobacco, fragrances).
  • Duty-free purchases must be taken out of Hong Kong and are subject to import limits in your destination country.
  • Keep your passport handy when shopping at duty-free stores in the airport — it may be required at checkout.

✈️ Important: While Hong Kong doesn't offer tax refunds, prices are already highly competitive thanks to its free-port status. Still, if you're flying internationally, be aware of customs regulations at your next destination, especially for items like alcohol, cosmetics, and electronics.

It's very close to Harbour City, but if you're not specifically there for shopping, you might want to reconsider. It's next to the Star Ferry, about a 5-8 minute walk. I can tolerate the old, musty smell in the room, as I expected it. But couldn't they fix the door stopper on the bathroom door? It's fine if things are old, but broken items shouldn't be there. Please check the items for sale again. The room size is considered very large for Hong Kong, but I didn't have time to enjoy the outside view anyway. There was no water in the room, just this one bottle. I'd like to know what it's for? Is it free or charged? Is this nostalgic bottle meant to be a piece of art? It's quite far from both Tsim Sha Tsui and East Tsim Sha Tsui MTR stations. Even if you're close to an MTR station, you'll still have to walk at least 10 minutes inside. It's very inconvenient with large suitcases, and you have to walk 10 minutes just to find food. Not recommended for families with children or those with a lot of luggage. Time is also a cost.

Neither of the two hotels I stayed at in Hong Kong this time required a deposit, which makes sense since almost no hotels in mainland China do anymore. I specifically requested a non-corner room when booking, but still ended up with one. The breakfast was pretty standard, similar to what you'd find at a Ji Hotel or Home Inn Select. The facilities are definitely showing their age; no kids' toothbrushes or slippers were provided, and no complimentary bottled water either. I'm not sure why they didn't renovate during the pandemic.

The hotel's location is excellent. The L-level lobby corridor connects directly to Langham Place mall, and Mong Kok MTR station is right downstairs. Sasa, Mannings, and Cookies Quartet are all nearby, and it's about a ten-minute walk to Sister Fei's Street Food. The air conditioning on the lower floors only provides cold air, but they provide a portable heater in the wardrobe. The Indian manager at the breakfast restaurant was wonderful; he found out it was my daughter's birthday and even brought a small cake. The front desk staff were also very friendly. Highly recommend!

I requested a quiet, high-floor room away from the elevator when booking, and all my requests were accommodated in advance. The hotel's location is excellent, with direct subway access, making it convenient to go anywhere. While the decor is from over a decade ago, the quality is superb. The materials and craftsmanship are flawless, and it's so well-maintained that you wouldn't guess it was renovated more than ten years ago. The lobby and drop-off area are truly unique and must be experienced firsthand. The room wasn't as small as some reviews suggested; with two 1.5-meter beds, it was perfectly fine for a family of three. There's a large shopping mall right downstairs – if you have the budget, it's worth exploring; you're sure to find something nice.

The service was great! They proactively upgraded our room upon arrival, which immediately boosted our spirits. We were on the 32nd floor, which required an elevator transfer. I'd seen before that this hotel has a lot of mirrors, and that's definitely true. Going to the restroom in the middle of the night without turning on the lights did make me a bit paranoid, but I slept pretty well. It was quiet, and the room was a good size. I really liked the scent of the body lotion; I'd even consider buying some for home. I remember it having a very soothing goji berry-like scent. The decor created a festive New Year atmosphere. We also received two complimentary drinks at the wealthy restaurant – I highly recommend the orange juice; it was delicious!

The hotel is very new. The family room with two double beds was perfect for two adults and two children. Our high-floor room had a great view from the floor-to-ceiling windows. It's not on a main road, so it was completely quiet at night. It's about a 7-8 minute walk to the MTR station, and it takes around 30 minutes by MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui. There are plenty of restaurants and supermarkets near the MTR station. We booked a room without breakfast, but decided to buy it the day before at the front desk for 110 HKD per person. As other guests mentioned, the breakfast selection is quite limited. However, considering a bowl of noodles at a Hong Kong *cha chaan teng* (local diner) can cost 40-50 HKD, it's not too expensive. If you want to save money, you could always grab something from the convenience store downstairs.

A truly delightful hotel! Recommended by a friend, and it totally lived up to expectations! It's right by the MTR, and the standard rooms have 1.5-meter beds with good space. I'll definitely be back next time. Located in Tsuen Wan, it offers a very authentic glimpse into local Hong Kong life. There's a wet market nearby and some fantastic local 'cha chaan tengs' (Hong Kong-style cafes) downstairs.

Conveniently located right at Terminal 1 Arrivals, it's super easy to find. Check-in and check-out were a breeze. The room is actually quite spacious for Hong Kong standards, and the price is reasonable. Getting around is very convenient – taxis and buses are readily available. The shower water gets nice and hot, but it's a bathtub, not a walk-in shower.

This hotel was a last-minute, unplanned booking. Rooms on Saturday were several times more expensive than usual, so I adjusted my expectations given the price. The room itself was pretty clean and tidy, but the bed was tiny. The dark wallpaper made the room feel dim, and while there was a short, narrow desk, I had to make do with the windowsill for extra space. There were no toiletries in the bathroom, and the disposable slippers fell apart immediately. Checking out before 11 AM after being out felt a bit rushed and chaotic. The hotel staff were professional and polite, and the location was good. I guess it served its purpose.

I stayed at Best Western Plus Tsim Sha Tsui during my trip to Hong Kong, and it was an overall decent experience. The location is excellent right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui with lots of restaurants, shops, and public transport within walking distance, making it super easy to explore Victoria Harbour, Nathan Road, and other key spots. The staff were generally friendly and helpful, and the 24‑hour front desk and luggage storage were convenient when I arrived early and left late in the day. The room itself was spacious for Hong Kong standards and had free Wi‑Fi, which made settling in comfortable. That said, some parts of the hotel feel a bit dated and in need of renovation, and a few guests mentioned that cleanliness and bathroom condition could be improved. For the price, it’s a good choice if you prioritise location and convenience, but if you’re after a luxury or super modern stay, you might want to consider other options.

I booked this room 20 days in advance, choosing a newly renovated one. The room was clean and tidy. The main highlight is the hotel's excellent location. Right across the street, there's a 24-hour Lin Heung Tea House, where I enjoyed dim sum breakfast for three consecutive days. If I got hungry late at night, I could easily pop out for a bite. Not far away are a 24-hour Don Quijote (Donki) and Matsumoto Kiyoshi. After the malls close at 10 PM, you can head to Donki to buy Japanese cosmetics and medicines. There are also 7-Eleven stores nearby. It's a 15-minute walk to Victoria Harbour and about a 5-minute subway ride to Tsim Sha Tsui. Just down one street, you'll find Lung Shing Dispensary and Cookies Quartet, and the famous cookie bear shop isn't too far either. All in all, for a tourist, staying here is incredibly convenient. The room isn't huge, but the two 1-meter beds can be pushed together, making it perfectly fine for a family of three. Due to Hong Kong's plastic ban, the hotel only provides disposable slippers and towels; bottled water and toiletries are not included. You can purchase them at the front desk downstairs or from nearby convenience stores or Donki.

The room was clean and comfortable, and the location was super convenient for getting around. There are big shopping malls everywhere with tons of food options. The subway entrance is also just a few hundred meters away, and the beach is only a 7-8 minute walk. They even upgraded me to a sea view room for free! When I left, they gave me some Godiva chocolates too. It was a bit pricey, but in such an expensive area, it was totally worth it, saving a lot on transportation costs and time. I had a really happy and convenient trip!

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel in Hong Kong, especially the beautiful harbour view; it was even better than I expected. The room was small, including the bathroom, but the space was thoughtfully designed and well managed. Everything listed during booking was provided, and the room was cleaned every day, which I truly appreciated. One thing to note is that toothbrushes and toothpaste are not provided, so it’s best to bring your own. However, essentials like toilet paper, shampoo, and other amenities were available. The breakfast was a buffet with a good variety of options, and it was satisfying overall. A small challenge was the elevator situation. The hotel has around 36 floors but only three elevators, so they were often very busy. You need to plan extra time, especially during peak hours, as waiting can take longer than expected. Overall, despite a few minor inconveniences, the stay turned out to be much better than I imagined. The cleanliness, comfort, and stunning view made it a special experience, and I would happily stay there again.

I carefully reviewed all the negative comments and found some to be objective observations. Things like small rooms, poor soundproofing, or being next to an elevated highway. Other comments seemed to stem from a lack of local knowledge, such as the absence of complimentary toothbrushes and toothpaste, which is quite common in local hotels here. The hotel provides drinking water dispensers on specific floors, and there are cups in the room. I didn't try it myself because I knew beforehand that bottled water isn't provided, so I just bought some at a nearby supermarket, which was convenient. Now for other details: I booked on the same day and arrived after 8 PM. The lobby staff were very welcoming, helped me check in, provided detailed information about the Wi-Fi password, gave me coupons, and explained the hotel shuttle service. I didn't pay much attention to the Wi-Fi details at the time as I didn't think I'd need it. The room was quite quiet once the air conditioning was turned off. Since I was staying multiple nights, I just asked the cleaning staff to replace the face towel the next day. On the day I took the bus to Tsim Sha Tsui, there was a slight mishap where I took the wrong elevator floor. The lobby is 'G' floor, and I got off on the first floor. I wandered around a bit blindly and to my surprise, walked right out to the bus! The meal voucher they provided was excellent – a full meal without any extra cost. Calling the front desk or concierge always resulted in effective responses. Luggage storage was also very convenient, with efficient and courteous service. Guests from all over the world stay at this hotel, and everyone was very friendly when sharing the elevator. Check-out was instant.

The location and transport links are absolutely top-notch – that's this hotel's biggest selling point! It's right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui's Nathan Road, and a side entrance leads directly to the MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station L3/L4 exits, so you won't get wet even if it's raining. It's just a 5-minute walk to Victoria Harbour and the Avenue of Stars, and 10 minutes to shopping havens like Harbour City and K11. If you get tired from shopping, you can pop back to the hotel anytime to drop off your bags, which is super convenient for shoppers and sightseers alike. It's also only a few minutes from the Star Ferry Terminal and China Ferry Terminal, making it easy to travel to Hong Kong Island or mainland China. Hong Kong International Airport is about a 45-minute drive away, so the transport connections are truly perfect. The surrounding amenities are unbeatable too: there's a mall downstairs, Sasa, convenience stores, local diners (cha chaan tengs), and specialty food shops everywhere. It's incredibly handy for all your meals and last-minute purchases.

First off, the location is super convenient: there's a bus stop and a light rail station right downstairs, making getting around a breeze. Plus, there's a shopping mall next door, so you don't have to go far for food or shopping. The service was also incredibly thoughtful: when I arrived with a lot of luggage, a bellhop proactively came to help me with the door before I even reached it. The front desk offers free luggage storage, so whether you arrive early or need to store your bags after checkout, you can drop them off and enjoy your day without worry. I was also given a complimentary upgrade to a deluxe room upon check-in, which was a very generous gesture. The cleaning staff I met at the hotel were also particularly friendly. Every time we crossed paths, they'd greet me warmly and even ask if I needed my room cleaned. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay.

The service was pretty standard, just a normal check-in process. The room itself was generally good, not small at all, though the bathroom was a bit tiny. Everything else was nice, the decor was quite new, and you could see Victoria Harbour from the window, so overall it was pretty good. Nearby, there's Wah Sao Cafe, dim sum shops, and the Star Ferry terminal, all quite famous and convenient. The only downside is the lack of convenience stores in the area, which was a bit bothersome. I asked the front desk for hot water but they didn't have any, and a bottle of mineral water cost 20 yuan, which isn't cheap. Other than that, everything was fine. Overall, I was quite satisfied. 🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How It Works in Hong Kong

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

In Hong Kong, there is no formal tax refund system like the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in some other countries, because most goods and services are already tax-free. That means — no extra tax to claim back!

However, here’s how you can enjoy duty-free shopping when departing from Hong Kong International Airport:

🛍️ While Shopping:

  • Shop at duty-free stores in the city or at the airport. These stores typically sell items like alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, and luxury goods at tax-exempt prices.
  • Look for shops marked as “duty-free” or “tax-exempt” — no special paperwork or tax forms are needed.
  • You may be asked to show your passport and boarding pass at the counter to confirm your eligibility.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive at the Hong Kong International Airport early to allow time for duty-free shopping before boarding.
  • Head to the departure area, where you’ll find a wide range of duty-free outlets.
  • Pay as usual — the tax-free price is already reflected at checkout, with no refund process required.

🧠 Tip:
Since Hong Kong has no VAT or sales tax, there’s no need to apply for a refund — you’re already saving with every purchase. Just be sure to follow customs regulations in your home country for any duty-free goods you bring back.

🏪 Duty-Free and Tax-Free Shopping in Hong Kong – Where to Go?

🔥 Hong Kong Shopping Tips for Tourists

tax return

Source: iMoney.my

Planning to shop in Hong Kong? Here are some helpful tips I wish I knew before my trip — learn from my experience and make the most of your shopping spree! 👇

🔖 No Need to Show Your Passport at Most Stores

Since Hong Kong doesn’t have a sales tax or tourist refund system, you usually won’t need your passport when shopping in the city — unless you’re at a duty-free store in the airport.

🗃️ Stay Organized with Your Purchases

Even though there’s no refund paperwork to manage, keeping your receipts can be helpful — especially for electronics, warranties, or returning goods.

🛍️ Plan High-Value Purchases for Airport Duty-Free

If you’re planning to buy alcohol, fragrances, or luxury goods, check prices at airport duty-free shops. Sometimes they offer better deals than city stores, especially for international brands.

Be Aware of Customs Restrictions

While you don’t need to declare anything in Hong Kong, your home country may have limits on duty-free imports. Keep your goods accessible in case customs officials want to inspect them when you return home.

📍 Shop at Reputable Stores

Stick to well-known retailers or trusted chains, especially for electronics and high-end items. Look for warranty support and clear return policies.

📱 Use Translation Apps if Needed

English is widely spoken in Hong Kong, but in smaller shops or markets, a translation app like Google Translate can come in handy.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many shops accept international cards, so paying with one that offers favorable exchange rates and no extra charges will help you save more than exchanging cash.

FAQs: Tax-Free Shopping in Hong Kong

  • Does Hong Kong have a Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS)?

No, Hong Kong does not operate a Tourist Refund Scheme because it does not impose VAT, GST, or sales tax on most goods and services. This means that retail prices are already tax-free, and there is no need to apply for a refund.
  • Who is eligible for tax-free shopping in Hong Kong?

All shoppers — including international tourists — automatically enjoy tax-free prices in Hong Kong. No special documents, registration, or tax refund forms are required when purchasing goods.
  • Is there a minimum spending amount to qualify for tax-free shopping?

No minimum spend is required. Since there is no sales tax in Hong Kong, all shoppers can enjoy tax-free prices regardless of how much they spend.
  • Can I claim a tax refund at the airport in Hong Kong?

No tax refund is necessary or available at the airport because goods in Hong Kong are already sold without any consumption tax. However, you can shop at duty-free stores at the Hong Kong International Airport before departure for additional savings on selected items such as alcohol, tobacco, fragrances, and luxury goods.
