Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from a fantastic shopping spree in Hong Kong – and I’m still buzzing from the amazing deals! From skincare and electronics to local snacks and designer labels, Hong Kong is a true paradise for shoppers. But here’s a tip that many international visitors might not know: you can actually get a tax refund on your shopping!

Yes, under Hong Kong’s Tax Refund Scheme for tourists, eligible travellers can claim back the consumption tax paid on purchases made at participating retailers. It’s a great way to save even more while enjoying everything this vibrant city has to offer. So if you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong and shopping is on your list, don’t miss this opportunity to claim your tax refund. I’ll guide you through how the refund process works, who’s eligible, and how to claim it smoothly before you head home. ✨🛍💳

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemptions in Hong Kong

When shopping in Hong Kong, you’ll be glad to know that the city has no value-added tax (VAT) or goods and services tax (GST) on most items. That’s right — prices are generally tax-free, which means what you see is what you pay!

However, if you're shopping at designated duty-free stores or purchasing items for export, you may be eligible for certain tax exemptions or refunds depending on the store’s policy and your departure point. 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of dim sum or egg tarts 🥢🍮
✅ Extra skincare, electronics, or luxury goods to take home 💄📱
✅ And plenty of souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales Tax in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram

Here’s some great news for shoppers: Hong Kong does not impose a Sales and Service Tax (SST), VAT, or GST on most goods and services. That means:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

Whether you’re browsing luxury brands at Harbour City, exploring boutiques in Causeway Bay, or picking up local finds at Mong Kok’s street markets, the price you see is usually the price you pay.

🧠 Tip: While most goods are tax-free, be aware of duty-free regulations if you’re planning to bring items back home. Always check your country’s customs limits to avoid unexpected charges.

📜 Understanding the Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Hong Kong?

Victoria Harbour

Hong Kong is known for its no VAT or GST policy, meaning most goods and services are already tax-free. However, traditional tax refund systems like those in other countries do not apply here, as Hong Kong does not impose sales tax on general consumer purchases.

Still, here’s what international visitors should know:

✅ 1. General Goods

Clothing, electronics, accessories, souvenirs, and skincare products are generally sold without any added consumption tax. No refunds are necessary because the price you pay is already tax-free.

✅ 2. Duty-Free Purchases

When departing from Hong Kong International Airport, you can shop at duty-free outlets offering alcohol, tobacco, fragrances, and luxury items at special tax-exempt prices.

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • There is no Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in Hong Kong, as the city operates a low-tax, free-port economy.
  • If you're shopping at a duty-free store, ensure your items are packed according to airline rules and declare them if required by your home country’s customs.
  • Always check whether a store is duty-free licensed if you’re specifically seeking tax-exempt deals.

🧠 Tip: Since prices are already competitive and tax-free, Hong Kong is one of the best places in Asia for high-value shopping without the hassle of refund paperwork!

Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Hong Kong?

Unlike many countries, Hong Kong does not impose VAT, GST, or Sales and Service Tax (SST) on most goods and services. As such, there is no formal Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in place — because most retail purchases are already tax-free.

However, if you're shopping at duty-free stores or purchasing goods for export, here are some things to know:

✅ You are automatically eligible for tax-free shopping if you are:

  • A non-Hong Kong resident visiting as a tourist
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Departing Hong Kong by air from the Hong Kong International Airport

✅ Duty-Free Shopping Tips:

  • No minimum spend is required for most duty-free items (e.g. alcohol, tobacco, fragrances).
  • Duty-free purchases must be taken out of Hong Kong and are subject to import limits in your destination country.
  • Keep your passport handy when shopping at duty-free stores in the airport — it may be required at checkout.

✈️ Important: While Hong Kong doesn't offer tax refunds, prices are already highly competitive thanks to its free-port status. Still, if you're flying internationally, be aware of customs regulations at your next destination, especially for items like alcohol, cosmetics, and electronics.

A returning guest here! I'm not sure if it's because of the summer holiday, but it seems like all departments are so busy that some of the hygiene details aren't as good as before. As soon as I entered the room, before I even touched the bed, I found a short hair on the bedsheet (I have long hair, so it couldn't have been mine). Also, later that night, I wanted a drink and ordered some glasses, but they were incredibly dirty, as if they hadn't been washed at all (luckily, I hadn't had a drink yet). I hope these details can be followed up and improved.

Facilities: Comprehensive Cleanliness: Tidy Environment: Good Service: Excellent Overall, the hotel is quite good. There's a buffet restaurant on the third floor. There's also a swimming pool upstairs with clean water. The location is decent; you can walk to Victoria Harbour and Harbour City, which is convenient for sightseeing and shopping. There are always staff members at the entrance to open doors, and they also deliver luggage to your room. I asked for some ice, and they brought me a whole bucket. The service is quite good. The Donglaishun restaurant downstairs is suitable for business dinners. There's also a dim sum restaurant directly opposite with good food and even better prices.

A few years ago, I visited Hong Kong and stayed at Cordis for the first time, absolutely loving it. This time around, there was no question, I chose Cordis again. It's in a prime Mong Kok location, super convenient for transportation and shopping. The hotel lobby connects directly to Langham Place, and just outside, you'll find SaSa, Mannings, DONKI, and Matsukiyo. Famous local eateries like Fei Jie and 18 Seats Doggy Noodles are also within a 10-minute walk. Langham Place's basement connects to the MTR Tsuen Wan Line, offering direct access to Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Central without any transfers. The hotel has been open for about ten years or so, and it's generally well-maintained, though of course, it can't compare to a brand new hotel – that's a matter of personal preference. A pleasant surprise this time was finding ice machines in the hallway on our floor. The room facilities are quite comprehensive, though having to stand in the bathtub for a shower is a minor drawback. The bedding is very comfortable, especially the pillows; I slept incredibly well. The front desk staff are all very nice, communicating in Mandarin, offering cold towels, and proactively greeting guests. However, the ground floor staff didn't offer to help with luggage proactively, which was a slight oversight. All in all, if you're looking for ultimate convenience, choosing Cordis is definitely the right decision.

Mong Kok's travel ceiling! Royal Plaza Hotel made my entire Hong Kong trip comfortable and healing. I stayed at the Royal Plaza Hotel throughout my self-guided trip to Hong Kong, and the overall experience far exceeded my expectations. I simply must write a detailed review. The room was cleaned daily by dedicated staff, with impeccable hygiene control. The entire room was spotless, clean, and comfortable. The butler service was highly responsive and efficient; when I needed cutlery, it was delivered to the room instantly, which was very thoughtful. Every evening, I like to relax with a bath. The bathtub was clean and odorless. After a tiring day of travel, a hot bath washed away all the fatigue. Downstairs, there's direct access to Mui Wah Bing Tang, offering authentic Hong Kong-style food readily available and delicious, making dining out extremely convenient. What surprised me most was the location: the hotel is seamlessly connected to Grand Century Place, and Mong Kok East Station is right outside. Taking the MTR to major popular spots like Ocean Park, Disneyland, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Causeway Bay was a breeze, with no need to worry about transportation. In Hong Kong, where space is at a premium, the rooms are spacious and wide, providing maximum comfort, suitable for both family trips and solo travelers. Two small, heartwarming suggestions for the hotel's improvement: Currently, the cutlery and bowls provided are a bit small. It was slightly inconvenient when I occasionally cooked Samyang Buldak noodles at night. If larger instant noodle bowls could be added, it would better cater to the needs of young guests. Also, if a stainless steel caddy could be installed on the bathtub, allowing for a glass of wine, aromatherapy, or a book while bathing, the ambiance and experience would be even better. Overall, it's impeccable. Hardware, service, and location are all top-notch. I will prioritize choosing this hotel again for my next trip to Hong Kong. I sincerely recommend it to all visitors to Hong Kong!

I stayed for three nights. On the first day, my flight was delayed by 4 hours, and I arrived at 4 AM. The front desk staff was on duty and processed my check-in quickly. The room had a direct drinking water tap, which was a nice touch. The room was also relatively spacious, and the windowsill had a soft padded cushion where you could sit or lie down. The bedding was a down comforter. Controls for lighting, air conditioning, and curtains were all push-button style, located on the bedside table, which was convenient. The location is excellent, just a few minutes' walk from Causeway Bay MTR Station Exit F1, very close to SOGO, and there are many dining options nearby. The hotel's Regal Palace restaurant is also outstanding.

This is my third stay this year. Whenever I visit Hong Kong, I usually stay in Sha Tin, and whenever I stay in Sha Tin, I almost always choose Alva. Besides the hotel being new, clean, hygienic, and offering great value for money, I also love to visit the nearby housing estates for dai pai dong or cha chaan teng. Shimen Village or City One are just a 10-minute walk away. Plus, it's very convenient to get to Science Park, Pak Shek Kok Promenade, and CUHK, with the KMB bus taking only 40 minutes.

The bustling neon lights along the coastline unfurl into a shimmering galaxy of gold and silver, and even the wind carries a lively, festive aroma. Lying in bed, you can watch the sunrise paint the horizon orange – this view truly makes it worth every penny! I have to give a huge shout-out to Domi at the hotel; his service really touched our hearts. We were celebrating our anniversary and mentioned it in an email beforehand. When we checked in, Domi recognized us right away. Not only did he upgrade us to a high-floor city view room for free, but he also sent up two bottles of chilled local sparkling wine and a handwritten anniversary card with incredibly neat and beautiful handwriting. In the afternoon, we went out and forgot our charger, so we came back to get it. He had already placed a fully charged adapter at the front desk and thoughtfully asked if we wanted help carrying the souvenirs we bought back to our room. His discretion was perfect – he never intruded on our private time, yet we felt his thoughtfulness everywhere.

The room was something else entirely; the hairdryer belonged in an antique museum. For such an expensive room, they really should get a new hairdryer. The rest of the amenities were fine, and the soundproofing did its best, but I could still hear planes taking off and landing from my room. Overall, the value for money was quite poor. The front desk charged me for an upgrade, so no complimentary upgrade there, but they aren't obligated to offer one anyway. Everything else was pretty good. Next time, I won't stay overnight during a layover in Hong Kong. Having a hotel would have made a big difference.

About an 8-minute walk from Jordan Station. You need to use your key card to access your floor in the elevator. The room facilities are a bit old, and the bathroom fan is quite loud. The air conditioning temperature couldn't be adjusted lower, and it was still quite cold.

The hotel's location is excellent; the subway station is just a short walk away, and there are plenty of shopping areas and convenience stores nearby, so you don't have to worry about transportation or finding food. Check-in at the front desk was very quick, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and tidy, the bedding was just right in terms of firmness, and it was very quiet at night, ensuring a good rest. I'll definitely prioritize staying here on my next trip.

Facilities: The hotel doesn't provide toothbrushes or bottled water. Cleanliness: It's very clean, and the housekeeping staff always asked if I needed anything every time I left the room. It's not far from the MTR station, but you still have to walk a short distance. The room was relatively spacious. Complaints: 1. The power outlets are incredibly inconvenient! There are no outlets by the bed! I searched for a long time before finding one on the wall next to the bed. I recommend bringing a long extension cord and a travel adapter (Hong Kong uses British-standard plugs). 2. I brought my own toothbrush, toothpaste, and comb after doing some research. 3. The bedding felt a bit damp. The duvet felt like it had just come out of the rainy season. While it didn't affect my sleep, those with sensitive skin might be bothered by it. I recommend bringing a thin sleeping bag for an extra layer.

The location is pretty good, right by Sai Ying Pun MTR Exit A1. You can take airport bus A10 and get off at Connaught Garden. There's a Mannings and a 7-Eleven right across the street, and it's about a 10-15 minute walk to the lively areas of Central and Sheung Wan. There's no sea view, and it's slightly smaller than the other Ramada. The shower water pressure is great, but the hairdryer can be a bit hard on the hands. No toothbrush or toothpaste provided. For August, HKD 540 a night felt a bit pricey.

Facilities: Complete. By the way, there's no bottled water, just the hotel's filtered water machine. But I think Hong Kong's water quality is fine, and you can't trace the source of water anywhere anyway. Cleanliness: OK. Environment: Good. It's quite convenient in Tsim Sha Tsui, within walking distance to Victoria Harbour. There are many good restaurants nearby and it's good for strolling around. Anyway, before going to Disneyland, I just wanted to explore downtown Hong Kong and do some city walks. We weren't planning to stay in the hotel much except for sleeping, so staying here was good value for money and very convenient. Service: When booking this hotel, the price for a room varied depending on the number of people. I suggest paying attention to this. I made a mistake and wanted to cancel and rebook, but the hotel's reservations department wouldn't allow cancellations. I ended up paying about 100 HKD more per room. I figured it wasn't worth ruining the trip's mood. When we arrived at the hotel, the front desk attendant upgraded our room type, I think. Our family of two adults and two children booked two king rooms, which were quite spacious. If it had been twin beds, I guess it would still have been okay for a family of four? I'm not sure. For your reference only, thank you for the service!

Before booking, I was hesitant due to multiple reviews mentioning discriminatory treatment from the hotel staff. However, upon arrival, I found the staff to be very dedicated and proactive in greeting guests and offering assistance. What's even better is the hotel's excellent location. The main entrance is right by Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station Exit L3, and Exit F is just a minute's walk away. The Peninsula Hotel is directly opposite the main entrance. Turning right leads to numerous dining options, while a three-to-five-minute walk to the left takes you to the Avenue of Stars (Victoria Harbour Goddess statue), K11, and Harbour City, making shopping very convenient. Of course, the hotel's decor is a bit dated, and the room types can't compare to those on the mainland, with smaller room sizes. The cleanliness and soundproofing are just average, but I didn't experience any of the itching mentioned in online reviews. Overall, it's a satisfactory hotel.

Great value for money. The room was comfortable, clean, and well-soundproofed, so I slept very well during my stay. The location is excellent. You can easily walk to the hotel from West Kowloon Station with your luggage, but make sure to check the route beforehand. Basically, exit at F, follow the signs towards Austin Road, and the check-in is in the lobby of the Scout Centre building. If you follow the route correctly, it's about a 15-minute walk, mostly through underground passages, so you're out of the sun. The hotel is next to Kowloon Park, and diagonally opposite there's a 7-Eleven. To the left of the 7-Eleven, downstairs, is a more affordable Wellcome supermarket, where you can find fruits, drinks, and daily necessities. It's convenient to get to many places from here. Both the city view and the sea view are quite nice, and the morning sky with the city view is beautiful. On my last day, I accidentally dropped a skincare sample into the sink drain. I couldn't get it out myself, so I called housekeeping. A maintenance worker came up quickly and resolved the issue very fast, with a cleaning lady accompanying him the whole time. When checking my luggage for storage, they only asked for the room number and the number of bags. Luggage storage is free, no extra charges. I would definitely stay here again.

The location is fantastic, right next to Tin Hau, in a very local neighborhood. It's quiet but not isolated, and if my booking hadn't been non-refundable, I would have definitely extended my stay. There are great food options nearby, like Wah So's Clear Broth Beef Brisket and the Black Sesame Ice Cream from Warm Heart Cheese. The service attitude, from the lobby to the doorman, was very kind and friendly. The room was small but had everything you needed. The location is excellent! The airport bus goes directly to the hotel, and there are many restaurants nearby. It's just a 2-minute walk to Prince Edward MTR station, making it convenient to get to Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei by foot, MTR, or bus. However, the hotel facilities are very old. The carpet looks like it's seen better days, probably hasn't been cleaned in over a decade. The hotel hosts a lot of tour groups, and the soundproofing in the rooms is poor. They do provide free earplugs, so if you're sensitive to noise, you might want to look elsewhere. I guess you get what you pay for, considering the cheap price and great location.

Whenever I visit Hong Kong, I always stay at the same place – this one! It's super convenient for transport; I can just hop off the MTR with my luggage and it's a short walk, no need to figure out new routes. Downstairs, there are all sorts of delicious eats, from dim sum for breakfast to late-night snacks, so after a long day of exploring, I can just pop down for a bite. First off, the air conditioning in the room wasn't working, which was unbearable given the hot weather. They did help us switch rooms later. The only downside was that the front desk phone was practically impossible to reach; you had to go downstairs yourself to ask anything. Second, the bathroom facilities were a bit old-fashioned, and the bathtub was quite low. Third, regarding transportation, there's an airport shuttle right on the G floor, and downstairs there's a supermarket and restaurants, all very convenient. Getting to the MTR station is easy; you just tap your Octopus card downstairs, and you get a HK$2 discount daily when going to Tai Wo Hau by MTR. The hotel's shuttle service to Tsim Sha Tsui has also been adjusted. Overall, it's still a good value-for-money hotel. I hope the hotel staff's service attitude can improve; that would make it even better.

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How It Works in Hong Kong

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

In Hong Kong, there is no formal tax refund system like the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) in some other countries, because most goods and services are already tax-free. That means — no extra tax to claim back!

However, here’s how you can enjoy duty-free shopping when departing from Hong Kong International Airport:

🛍️ While Shopping:

  • Shop at duty-free stores in the city or at the airport. These stores typically sell items like alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, and luxury goods at tax-exempt prices.
  • Look for shops marked as “duty-free” or “tax-exempt” — no special paperwork or tax forms are needed.
  • You may be asked to show your passport and boarding pass at the counter to confirm your eligibility.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive at the Hong Kong International Airport early to allow time for duty-free shopping before boarding.
  • Head to the departure area, where you’ll find a wide range of duty-free outlets.
  • Pay as usual — the tax-free price is already reflected at checkout, with no refund process required.

🧠 Tip:
Since Hong Kong has no VAT or sales tax, there’s no need to apply for a refund — you’re already saving with every purchase. Just be sure to follow customs regulations in your home country for any duty-free goods you bring back.

🏪 Duty-Free and Tax-Free Shopping in Hong Kong – Where to Go?

Planning to shop in Hong Kong? Here are some helpful tips I wish I knew before my trip — learn from my experience and make the most of your shopping spree! 👇

🔖 No Need to Show Your Passport at Most Stores

Since Hong Kong doesn’t have a sales tax or tourist refund system, you usually won’t need your passport when shopping in the city — unless you’re at a duty-free store in the airport.

🗃️ Stay Organized with Your Purchases

Even though there’s no refund paperwork to manage, keeping your receipts can be helpful — especially for electronics, warranties, or returning goods.

🛍️ Plan High-Value Purchases for Airport Duty-Free

If you’re planning to buy alcohol, fragrances, or luxury goods, check prices at airport duty-free shops. Sometimes they offer better deals than city stores, especially for international brands.

Be Aware of Customs Restrictions

While you don’t need to declare anything in Hong Kong, your home country may have limits on duty-free imports. Keep your goods accessible in case customs officials want to inspect them when you return home.

📍 Shop at Reputable Stores

Stick to well-known retailers or trusted chains, especially for electronics and high-end items. Look for warranty support and clear return policies.

📱 Use Translation Apps if Needed

English is widely spoken in Hong Kong, but in smaller shops or markets, a translation app like Google Translate can come in handy.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many shops accept international cards, so paying with one that offers favorable exchange rates and no extra charges will help you save more than exchanging cash.
