In this post, I’ll share everything you need to know about tax refunds in Indonesia — how it works, how much you can get back, who qualifies, and a step-by-step guide based on my own travel experience. Let's make sure you don’t miss out on the savings! 🛫💼

🧐 What is a Tax Refund in Indonesia?

source from https://www.vecteezy.com/

According to the Indonesian Directorate General of Taxes, tourists who shop in Indonesia pay VAT (Value Added Tax), which is typically 11%.

As a non-Indonesian tourist, you’re eligible to get a portion of this VAT refunded, either at the airport before departing or through designated refund counters. It's like getting cashback just for shopping!

💰 How Much is VAT in Indonesia?

VAT is 11% — quite high compared to some countries. So, yes, it’s definitely worth applying for a refund.

🔙 How Much Can I Get Back?

Typically, you’ll get up to 10% of the purchase price back (after fees). I spent around RM2,200 on shopping in Jakarta and Bali — and got back nearly RM170. 🎉

A Peaceful Jungle Paradise – Worth the Escape Ayung Resort is a hidden gem tucked away in the lush jungle of Ubud. While the location is a bit remote — with travel into central Ubud taking up to an hour due to the single road access — the truth is, you won’t want to leave the resort at all. The views are absolutely breathtaking, overlooking the mountains and the serene beauty of the surrounding jungle. The entire resort is designed to bring peace and tranquility, with incredible attention to detail in both the architecture and landscaping. The on-site restaurants were excellent, the service impeccable, and the range of facilities and activities meant everything you needed was right there. Whether you’re after a relaxing escape or a deep connection to nature, this place delivers a 10/10 experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking to unwind and soak in the true beauty of Ubud without the crowds.

This resort was developed in the 1990s on a huge block of land. Ergo, the grounds are extensive, the facilities are grand and spacious and whilst busy, it never felt crowded. There were a number of pools and direct access to the beach. There was a good range of restaurants. The breakfast was good was an extensive range served both in a dining room as well as at the poolside cafe. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. They understood the concept of good customer service. My only gripe was that the room felt damp so we asked for a dehumidifier to be put into our room.

Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa is an amazing place to unwind, whether you’re with family or friends or sole travelers.t’s the perfect escape from noisy areas and heavy traffic, offering a peaceful atmosphere high on the top of Bali with breathtaking views all around. Everything about this resort stands out — from the warm, professional employees to the exceptional cleanliness and attention to detail. A big thanks to the entire team for their outstanding support throughout my stay. If they could add a few more amenities, it would be an even greater plus and elevate the overall experience. Truly a Super Star ⭐️ destination.

The room condition was decent. At this point, I don't have high expectations for hotels in Bali outside of luxury resorts; I just need it to be clean, tidy, functional, and odor-free. The service wasn't bad, but it wasn't outstanding either. Overall, it functions as a hotel, but it doesn't quite deliver a resort experience. The location primarily requires using Gojek (two-wheelers) or taxis, as there's not much within walking distance. The hotel has a fairly large all-day dining restaurant, and the food is okay, but if you're looking for something really good, you're better off eating out. The rooftop bar is very small and basic. It might be more pleasant once the sun goes down.

I had a pleasant stay at Sense Sunset Seminyak Hotel in Bali. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The hotel’s location on Sunset Road makes it easy to access the beach, shopping areas, and restaurants, while still being close to the airport. The swimming pool was well-maintained, and overall, the property felt safe and welcoming. For travelers looking for affordable comfort with solid amenities, this hotel is a smart choice

The location right in front of the beach is definitely a plus point as compared to other hotels in the surrounding Good - beach front, wide breakfast settings, 2 big swimming pools, calm and clean Sanur Beach best for sea water swimming, room is reasonably clean but safe box locked when we checked in, outside hotel many eateries, good to explore Juicy and Crispy restaurant for BBQ ribs Can be improved - more delightful service, no one helped us on luggage carrying when check-in - 3pm check in time is not interesting and inconvenience - very far to walk around for those having problem on long walking -

My first stop in Bali was Kuta, and this hotel was a great choice. It's super close to the airport, which is perfect for late-night arrivals. The hotel offers excellent value for money, and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. It's also conveniently located for getting around. If you enjoy walking, it's not a long stroll to Beachwalk, and you'll even pass through Jalan Legian, soaking in the local sights and culture along the way. The hotel does have a pool, but it's on the smaller side, and I didn't get a chance to use it. This isn't really a hotel for just lounging around; it's more suited for travelers who plan to be out exploring daily or those catching a flight, and who don't have super high expectations for their accommodation.

The hotel was clean and had a pleasant atmosphere, and the staff were kind and very friendly. However, during breakfast, I asked the male chef for an omelet near the end of service time, and he seemed irritated. When I spoke to him, he snapped “Huh?!” at me in a loud voice and then ignored me afterward, which was quite unpleasant. Aside from that, the food quality was good for the price, and I was satisfied overall. The location was excellent — close to a shopping mall, market, and the beach. As for amenities, there were no razors, hairbrushes, or conditioner, and the hair dryer was very weak, but considering the low price, it was understandable.

IReview Title: Serious Safety Concerns – Money Lost in My Room I have stayed at Diprima Hotel Petitenget Seminyak four times, but this last visit was very disappointing and worrying. During my stay, money disappeared from my own room. This has never happened before, but it has completely ruined my trust in the hotel. Room safety and security should be the top priority, yet I felt unprotected as a guest. After this incident, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone, and unfortunately, I will not be returning again.'m concerned about room safety. My money was

Location wise is super strategic, the breakfast was good and the staffs are friendly (expected as Balinese hospitality in general is a win). The room is neat, the mattress is clean, towels need to change it has discoloured thou. The matress is acceptable. What’s not acceptable is the bathroom smells, the sewage is so bad, the toilet is has smells of a fish market and whenever I flush the toilet, the odor of the water is really bad. Lastly, the noises at wee hours like 3am onwards, u can hear bagging on the door, shoutings from drunken party animal and an “explicit” sound from next door. NOT recommended for family with younger or teen children.

Kenran Resort Ubud is a hidden gem in the heart of Bali that completely exceeded my expectations. Tucked away in the lush jungle, the resort offers the perfect balance of tranquility, luxury, and nature — a real escape from the busy world. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm smiles and exceptional service. The staff were not only professional but genuinely kind and attentive throughout my stay. Every detail was carefully taken care of. The room was stunning — spacious, clean, and tastefully designed with traditional Balinese touches. My favorite part was the private balcony with a view of the jungle and river — it was pure serenity waking up to the sounds of nature. The infinity pool is absolutely beautiful and surrounded by greenery, making it a perfect spot to unwind and soak up the peaceful vibes. The on-site spa was another highlight; I had one of the most relaxing massages I’ve ever experienced, with the sound of the river in the background adding to the calm atmosphere. Breakfast was delicious every morning, with plenty of fresh options and great coffee. The restaurant also served amazing local and Western dishes throughout the day, all beautifully presented. Overall, Kenran Resort is a dream. Whether you’re visiting Bali for the first time or returning for a quiet getaway, this resort offers a unique and unforgettable experience. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Where do I even begin... Probably one of the best luxurious hotel experience you can get in South East Asia - from the breathtaking taking architecture to the extremely professional yet warm hospitality from each and every single staff I met. Apurva Kempinski is definitely the best Kempinski experience thus far and big thumbs up to the staff that made this experience such an unforgettable one. Special mention to the 2 staff working at the lobby entrance (grab pickup point) who took the initiative to head out to the security post to collect my emergency medication which I ordered via Grabmart and the Grab delivery rider was insistent on not coming to the lobby from the security post as ”lobby was too far”. The 2 staff assured me that the grab riders are supposed to deliver to the lobby collection point and then headed out to collect from the rider. (This was on 27 Dec around 12am). Special shout out to these 2 staffs :) Highly recommended to both couples and families as Apurva is packed with facilities for all traveller types!

The room was exactly as pictured and described. The breakfast wasn't great; there was no congee with noodles, only plain congee, milk, bread, and coffee (which was decent when made fresh). The 'Seafood Carnival' was a disappointment. 🤔 It wasn't as good as the first convenience store to the left across from the hotel. That place has a huge seafood platter for just over 300, and it's incredibly fresh. The lobster and tiger prawns with garlic butter sauce are especially worth trying there. The hotel's seafood tasted like it had been frozen and wasn't very fresh, though the live music and atmosphere were a plus. The seafood platter shown in the picture is not from the hotel. What truly stands out is the fantastic service and warm smiles from every single staff member. They genuinely care, and I would definitely come back again.

Pls… never miss their breakfast, Ala ca all you can eat… it just worth spending everyday morning enjoying the half outdoor time.

The owner of Four Points by Sheraton Bali is SOOOOO blessed to have all these hard working professionals! Not only were they kind, they got everything done in a very efficient manner. The room was super clean and the food was awesome! I just hope the shower head gets stronger water pressure. Also, it's a bit of walk to Kuta Beach, but there are so many restaurants, coffee shops, and massage shops nearby. Four Points by Sheraton Bali made my stay very enjoyable :)

great hospitality from all the staff, rooms are clean and spacious with good view of the greenery. breakfast is substantial as well! we opted for the free shuttle service on one of the days and pre booked the pick-up time to come back - but as we were running late, we decided to take a cab back. to our surprise, the driver was waiting for us at the pick-up point despite us being 10 minutes late. we quickly informed the front office to tell the driver to come back and appreciated his wait with a small tip.  overall, it was a pleasant stay and we enjoyed our time here!
