Malaysia Tax Refund Guide – Claim SST as a Tourist

Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from an amazing shopping spree right here in Malaysia – and wow, the deals are still fresh in my mind! Whether it’s skincare, snacks, or the latest gadgets, Malaysia is full of great finds. But here’s something many international visitors might not know you can actually claim a tax refund on your shopping here! That’s right – with Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), eligible tourists can get back the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST) on purchases made at participating stores.

So if you’re visiting Malaysia and planning to shop, don’t miss out on this chance to save. Let me walk you through everything you need to know – from how the refund system works to how you can claim it smoothly before heading home. ✨💼💴

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemption in Malaysia

When shopping in Malaysia, you'll often see prices that already include the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST), which is applied to most goods and services.

But here’s the good news: International tourists can get a refund on this tax for eligible purchases made at participating stores under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of nasi lemak or cendol 🍽️
✅ Extra skincare or handicrafts to bring home 💆‍♀️
✅ And more souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales and Service Tax (SST) in Malaysia

Petronas Twin Towers

Malaysia’s Sales and Service Tax (SST) is set at 6%, and it applies to many everyday purchases, including:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

You might not notice it at first, but this tax can quietly add up—especially if you're shopping in popular spots like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Suria KLCC, or IOI City Mall.

🧠 Tip: Keep an eye on whether prices are marked as “inclusive” or “exclusive” of SST. Most stores include the tax in the displayed price, but it’s always good to double-check.

📜 The Current Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Malaysia?

Independence Square

In Malaysia, tax refunds for tourists fall under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), and only certain items are eligible. Here’s a breakdown of what qualifies:

1. General Goods

This includes items like clothing, electronics, souvenirs, accessories, and other non-consumable products.

Conditions:

  • Minimum spend: RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating store.
  • Purchases must be made within 3 months before your departure from Malaysia.
  • Items must be taken out of Malaysia within 3 months of purchase.
  • You must depart from an international airport (KLIA, KLIA2, Penang, etc.).

2. Consumable Goods

Some consumables like packaged snacks and personal care items may be eligible, but they must be unused and taken out of Malaysia in your luggage.

Note:

  • Tax refund only applies to purchases made at approved TRS retailers (look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo).
  • Items must be shown at the refund counter before check-in, along with your passport and receipts.

⚠️ Not all stores combine receipts or offer refunds on both categories, so always ask at the counter or check for the TRS sign before shopping!

✅ Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Malaysia?

To qualify for a tax refund under Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), here’s what you need to meet:

✅ You must be:

  • A non-Malaysian citizen
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Visiting Malaysia on a tourist visa or under social visit status
  • Departing Malaysia by air from one of the approved international airports (e.g., KLIA, KLIA2, Penang International Airport)

✅ You must:

  • Present your original passport at the time of purchase (photocopies are not accepted)
  • Spend at least RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating TRS store
  • Make the purchase within 3 months before your departure date
  • Take the goods out of Malaysia – items must be for personal use only, not for resale or commercial purposes

✈️ Important: Customs may inspect your purchased goods before departure, so keep all receipts, your passport, and items easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.

Our first time here on Hotel Maya and all in can say is we had a great stay here 😍 Staffs are friendly and welcoming 😘 Food (breakfast) was ok so many choices 😋 Cleanliness was good too 👍 Location was superb, just a walking distance to KLCC Petronas and Pintasan Saloma Since we're backpackers, grab taxi was just a click away in our cp(thru Grab App) to book everywhere we wanna go like church, Merdeka Square,Merdeka 118,Lalaport,Pavilion etc. Hotel has pool (but kinda a bit cold) so my son just took a quick dip The room was clean with comfy bed, it has mini ref and cofee and tea was provided Bathroom with hot and cold including the faucet(sink) Wifi inside the room was fast Overall experience was good and affordability of the hotel was ok 👍 For me,I highly recommend Maya Hotel💯✅️ 👌

Locationwise, Royale Chulan is situated strategically in the very heart of Kuala Lumpur. Pavillion Mall is just a short walk away and you can access the pedestrian bridge from The Banyan. Although the hotel itself is kinda old and pass its prime in term of facilities, the prompt service as well as the great breakfast in the morning make up for it. You will be spoiled for choice with the morning breakfast buffet ranging from traditional Malay, to Chinese and Indian as well as western style breakfast.

Our staycation here is nothing short of excellent. The room has a good scent when we first entered, and we loved the wooden vibe the hotel room has. The room is very comfortable and had a good nights rest. There is a filtered water tap in the bathroom, which eases our needs for drinking water. Me and my partner felt that we should have booked an additional night to enjoy the room more. As I booked this hotel for a new years eve stay, the room we had windows facing TRX, allowing us to see the new years fireworks from the comfort of the hotel room. Although variety of the breakfast buffet is not one of the best I've had among luxury hotels, but it has great taste and does fulfill your needs for a hearty breakfast. Definitely consider this hotel for next staycations

Not the best 5-star hotel that I ever stayed. The water that came out from our shower was dirty that we need to wait for 1 hour before we can use the shower. Seems like the water tank was not cleaned well maybe? The bed are also quite hard. It doesn feel loke a 5-star hotel bed. The quality of bed is like a 3-star hotel. I've stayed at other 5-star hotel brands and I have to say this is the worst 5-star hotel I ever stayed. Not gonna choose Pullman again. Not up to my standard for a 5-star hotel.

Booked for Trader KL to view the firewood in front of KLCC inside the room. 1The staffs from front desk, room attendees, each location staffs managers such as lounge managers, staffs , they are very friendly and warm to greet and helping me and my family to achieve the great experience during our stay.  We felt very warm and being treated like a VIP for every visits to their areas. And the room is clean and the view is just amazing. I could see direct KLCC view at floor 26x3.  Although during the new year firewood, per my experience , u better go to sky bar and see it cos the firewood inside my room was not per my expectation (though is not hotel issue).  My litter regret over here. The food is nice and tasted good.- breakfast. Overall, our experience in Trader is magnificent. I felt lovely and warm during my stay.

The location is excellent, the staff were super friendly and polite, and both rooms were big and comfortable. The hotel was clean. There was a strange smell in the corridor, I think because of the weather, but it did not affect our stay or rooms at all. We took breakfast, which was fair. I only wished there were gluten-free bread and lactose-free milk; the manager was helping his colleagues, which was nice to see.  For sure, I will come back again to this hotel.

Overall, the stay was acceptable, but several aspects did not meet the standards expected of a 5-star Ritz-Carlton property. While we appreciate the upgrade from two Deluxe Rooms to a Suite, which was a positive gesture, the overall amenities were disappointing and did not reflect luxury hotel standards. Basic expectations such as sufficient towels were not met, and no extra towels were provided during our stay. More concerning was the condition of the room itself. The carpet is clearly in need of refurbishment. I stepped on a sharp nail at the edge of the carpet, which is a serious safety issue and unacceptable for a hotel of this calibre. Given the brand reputation and pricing, attention to maintenance, room safety, and basic amenities must be significantly improved. While the service gesture was appreciated, it does not compensate for shortcomings that compromise comfort and guest safety.

1. I had a great experience at this hostel. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, and the staff were always ready to help. The atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. 2. The hostel exceeded my expectations. Excellent customer service, clean facilities, and a convenient location close to everything. I’d stay again without hesitation. 3. Very peaceful place, perfect for travelers. The WiFi is strong, the bathrooms are clean, and the staff go the extra mile to make you feel at home.

The room was very clean and comfortable, and it's super close to Chow Kit station. Plus, there are tons of food stalls right around the corner from the hotel at night. I'm not sure if it's the Chow Kit Night Market, but they had everything I wanted to eat. I actually walked to the hotel from the Petronas Towers – I love walking! I also walked from Lucky Cafe to the hotel, and along the way, you naturally stumble upon a lot of photo ops and places to eat. Big thanks to the hotel staff. I also had breakfast once, and it was really good! They had noodles, chicken sausages, beef sausages, bread, yogurt, milk and cereal, nasi lemak items, coffee, vegetables, and fruit. There were some dishes I couldn't name, but honestly, if you booked breakfast through Ctrip, it's definitely worth it. Huge thanks to the chef and staff!

Check in for the second time😍 This time we bring our baby to stay here 3D2N. All of the service is good! Parking available at the basement(please mention your plate no to the receptionist), check in process also fast (they even upgrade my room from superior room to Executive for free. I appreciate it so much!) and i even request for baby cot too. The view from my room(Room 1019) was TRX tower. Swimming pool, Gym & cafe at Level 3(we can use towel beside the gym & put it inside the basket after use).

I love the location. Less than five minutes walk to Sg Wang, Lot10, Star Hills. Around 10 minutes walk to Pavilion/TRX. So convenient. Smack in the middle of Bukit Bintang Area. The room is spacious, very comfortable and equipped with iron and hair dryer. Conmplete with toiletteries and coffee tea. Hotel staff is very warm, attentive and helpful. Special mention to the housekeeping staff, Farhad for cleaning our room nicely. Breakfast buffer has a good selection and ample seating. The vibe is chill and relaxing, so nice for our stay in KL. I will come back to Royal Hotel and I recommend the rest to give this hotel a try.

Travelodge Located conveniently by the NRT and LRT station (red and blue line) its a 3 min walk right to the hotel. Also within walking distance is Chinatown where you can find loads of good food, cafe, interesting shops, bars and of course the Central Market. The hotel has seen better days and the rooms are functional. The lobby felt friendly and staff were really friendly and nice. What I liked about the hotel is that it promotes eco-friendliness by only changing the sheets and towels every two days, which makes total sense especially for short stays. The ambiance of the room felt empty and not really welcoming. Maybe due to the hard flooring which didn’t give it a sense of softness. Amenities are pretty basic (shampoo, shower gel and disposable toothbrush) The bath towels provided although clean, were very old and fraying. No face towels. The bed is a little too soft for my liking but comfortable enough. The air conditioning in the room was super cold no matter what temperature I turned it to. At one point I had turned it to 28 degrees and it was still really cold. I could only adjust the airflow to Low which didn’t help. The safe also wasn’t working (probably not plugged in but I couldn’t find the switch or anything) Overall, a good place to stay if you are just looking for something functional because the location is really convenient and surround areas are great.

Facing a troublesome using hotel room WiFi, after CS contacted me in the WS and she gave me a invite code which helps me easier on using the WiFi. Secondly, there is a must to use their valet parking service during the stay in the hotel, cause they have no parking lot in the hotel, which we feel not comfortable with. One of the valet (Indian guy) has hygiene issue, after his drive to the hotel for me and I felt itchiness all over my body. That’s disgusting! The room I got at the first place the AC is a bit noisy and I got changed room to a higher floor, which is much brighter which I appreciate to. With the shower problem (shower hose broken) got solved after twice of my complaint to the front desk and WS CS. Overall the stay is ok, but I’ll not recommend for family stay, the staircase is not friendly to wheelchair and stroller.

Always a great stay at the Impiana. I invariably choose this hotel when coming to KL because of its central location yet with good value and great access to KLCC Park and Suria shopping Centre as well as the Pavilion Mall all via the Skybridge which keeps you both dry and protected from the Sun. The stuff fantastic, especially Concierge and also Karen at reception who does it all she can to help.

The location of this apartment is good for tourists as it is near to Chinatown and mega malls. However the cleanliness is not up to standard. There are baby cockroaches near the washing basin and a few in the bedrooms too. I have requested for a change of hairdryer but it was not done. The hairdryer was not in working condition.

Great amenities and staff, but hygiene and poor Wi-Fi Pros: Comfort: Very soft mattress, effective blackout curtains, and a comfortable work chair. Amenities: The room is well-equipped with an iron, ironing board, and hairdryer. I really appreciated the water purifier and capsule coffee machine. Service & Hygiene kits: Polite staff, good room service. High-quality toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, razor). Cons: Hygiene: This was the biggest disappointment. There were feces smeared on the wall right next to the toilet. This is absolutely unacceptable; housekeeping clearly failed here. Internet: This is the first hotel in KL that disappointed me with the internet. Speeds were low: 10–25 Mbps in public areas and only 5–15 Mbps inside the room. Noise: Very poor soundproofing. You can hear everything from the corridor, especially loud door slamming. Maintenance: The wardrobe door didn't close properly, and some power sockets had loose contacts.

nothing special about the hotel. room is decently clean but there are several stains on the floor and sofa. no toothbrush and toothpaste so i have to buy nearby 7-11. breakfast spread limited. but that is minor. but the view sunrise from my room is nice. one that annoyed me is that the window is not sound proof. at night, you can hear vehicles zooming, especially the motorcycle mat-rempit till way late night like 2-3am. how to sleep? the staff said that the room is non-smoking but on the first day went to my room, the smell of smoke cigarette is all over the walkway! will not stay here again.

Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur – A Wonderful Stay in the Heart of the City The hotel is beautifully located in the Golden Triangle, just across from Pavilion KL, with stunning views of the Petronas Twin Towers. It’s slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of Bukit Bintang, yet still close enough for easy access — a perfect balance between convenience and tranquility. Upon check-in, guests are offered a selection of incense and essential oils for their room — a lovely and thoughtful personal touch. We stayed in the Signature Banyan Retreat, which was cozy, comfortable, and came with all the amenities you’d expect, plus a beautiful view of KL’s night skyline. We did encounter a minor issue on our first night when the room’s light switches stopped working, including the master switch. The maintenance engineer arrived promptly, even though it was close to midnight, and quickly resolved the issue with a system reset. Really appreciate how efficient and polite he was! We also dined at Torito, the hotel’s Peruvian-Japanese restaurant, and it was a delightful experience. The ceviche clásico is a must-try — so refreshing and full of flavor. The lomo saltado featured perfectly cooked medium-rare beef tenderloin, and the stone ceviche, a warm twist on the classic, was equally impressive. Unfortunately, we were too full to try dessert, but the attentive service made the meal memorable. Special thanks to Izat (Front Desk), Hakim (Breakfast), and all the other staff members whose names we didn’t catch, for their warmth, patience, and genuine hospitality. Their friendly smiles and willingness to help made our stay at Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur truly enjoyable.

I was pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of the area, and I absolutely love it! The convenience of having a parking space right next to the hotel for just RM12 per day is fantastic. The only minor downside was a slightly musty smell in the room, but it was manageable. The shower pressure could be a bit stronger, but everything else was quite convenient. I would definitely consider staying here again, especially since my dad really values convenient parking! Please note that the ironing facilities are shared, and the iron may not get very hot. Additionally, the toiletries provided are quite basic, so remember to bring your own toothpaste and toothbrush.

There were mosquitos in the room. Room carpet dirty with lots of hair. Toilet biddet is not working. Asking the staff to fix or change to the other room. 🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How to Claim It in Malaysia

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

Here’s a step-by-step guide based on my experience:

🛍️ At the Store:

  • Shop as usual at a participating Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) retailer. Look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo.
  • When paying, inform the cashier that you want to claim a tax refund.
  • Present your original passport for verification. The store will record your details and issue a tax refund form along with your purchase receipt.
  • Keep all your tax refund documents and receipts organized in a dedicated pouch or folder.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive early—at least 3 hours before your flight to allow time for the refund process.
  • Proceed to the Tourist Refund Counter located after immigration at international airports like KLIA, KLIA2, or Penang.
  • Present your passport, original receipts, purchased goods, and refund forms for verification. Customs officers may inspect your goods.
  • Once approved, you can claim your refund either in cash (Malaysian Ringgit) or credited back to your credit card, depending on the airport’s facilities.

🧠 Tip: Some airports may have different procedures or opening hours for the refund counter, so it’s best to check in advance and keep your items easily accessible for inspection.

Here are some useful tips I wish I knew before shopping in Malaysia – learn from my experience! 👇

🔖 Keep Your Passport Handy

Don’t tuck it away deep in your bag – you’ll need to show it every time you shop at a participating store.

🗃️ Stay Organized

Keep all your receipts, tax refund forms, and purchase documents together. I recommend using a small folder or pouch to avoid losing anything.

🛍️ Plan Your Purchases

Try to shop at fewer stores but reach the minimum spend of RM300 per receipt to qualify for the refund, rather than making many small purchases.

⛔ Keep Goods Accessible

Customs may want to inspect your purchases at the airport, so keep items unpacked and easy to present.

📍 Airport Refund Counters Are Your Backup

If you forget to get your refund at the store, you can still claim it at Tourist Refund Counters located at airports like KLIA, KLIA2, and Penang International Airport.

📱 Use Translation Apps

Some shop staff may have limited English, so using apps like Google Translate can help speed up communication.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Paying with a card that offers good exchange rates and no extra fees can save you money compared to cash exchanges.
