Malaysia Tax Refund Guide – Claim SST as a Tourist

Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from an amazing shopping spree right here in Malaysia – and wow, the deals are still fresh in my mind! Whether it’s skincare, snacks, or the latest gadgets, Malaysia is full of great finds. But here’s something many international visitors might not know you can actually claim a tax refund on your shopping here! That’s right – with Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), eligible tourists can get back the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST) on purchases made at participating stores.

So if you’re visiting Malaysia and planning to shop, don’t miss out on this chance to save. Let me walk you through everything you need to know – from how the refund system works to how you can claim it smoothly before heading home. ✨💼💴

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemption in Malaysia

When shopping in Malaysia, you'll often see prices that already include the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST), which is applied to most goods and services.

But here’s the good news: International tourists can get a refund on this tax for eligible purchases made at participating stores under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of nasi lemak or cendol 🍽️
✅ Extra skincare or handicrafts to bring home 💆‍♀️
✅ And more souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales and Service Tax (SST) in Malaysia

Petronas Twin Towers

Malaysia’s Sales and Service Tax (SST) is set at 6%, and it applies to many everyday purchases, including:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

You might not notice it at first, but this tax can quietly add up—especially if you're shopping in popular spots like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Suria KLCC, or IOI City Mall.

🧠 Tip: Keep an eye on whether prices are marked as “inclusive” or “exclusive” of SST. Most stores include the tax in the displayed price, but it’s always good to double-check.

📜 The Current Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Malaysia?

Independence Square

In Malaysia, tax refunds for tourists fall under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), and only certain items are eligible. Here’s a breakdown of what qualifies:

1. General Goods

This includes items like clothing, electronics, souvenirs, accessories, and other non-consumable products.

Conditions:

  • Minimum spend: RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating store.
  • Purchases must be made within 3 months before your departure from Malaysia.
  • Items must be taken out of Malaysia within 3 months of purchase.
  • You must depart from an international airport (KLIA, KLIA2, Penang, etc.).

2. Consumable Goods

Some consumables like packaged snacks and personal care items may be eligible, but they must be unused and taken out of Malaysia in your luggage.

Note:

  • Tax refund only applies to purchases made at approved TRS retailers (look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo).
  • Items must be shown at the refund counter before check-in, along with your passport and receipts.

⚠️ Not all stores combine receipts or offer refunds on both categories, so always ask at the counter or check for the TRS sign before shopping!

✅ Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Malaysia?

To qualify for a tax refund under Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), here’s what you need to meet:

✅ You must be:

  • A non-Malaysian citizen
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Visiting Malaysia on a tourist visa or under social visit status
  • Departing Malaysia by air from one of the approved international airports (e.g., KLIA, KLIA2, Penang International Airport)

✅ You must:

  • Present your original passport at the time of purchase (photocopies are not accepted)
  • Spend at least RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating TRS store
  • Make the purchase within 3 months before your departure date
  • Take the goods out of Malaysia – items must be for personal use only, not for resale or commercial purposes

✈️ Important: Customs may inspect your purchased goods before departure, so keep all receipts, your passport, and items easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.

I stayed at Royale Chulan Hotel Kuala Lumpur from 29 December 2025 to 1 January 2026, and overall it was a pleasant and comfortable experience. The hotel is strategically located in Bukit Bintang, within walking distance to Pavilion KL and other major shopping areas. This made it very convenient, especially during the year-end holiday period. The room was spacious, clean, and well-maintained, with comfortable bedding and a classic, elegant interior. Housekeeping did a good job throughout the stay. The bathroom was clean with good water pressure and sufficient amenities. Hotel staff were polite, professional, and helpful, particularly at the front desk during check-in and check-out, despite the busy New Year period. Breakfast offered a good variety of local and international dishes. The food quality was satisfying, though the breakfast area could get crowded during peak hours. Facilities such as the swimming pool and gym were well-kept and added value to the stay. The overall atmosphere of the hotel felt calm and suitable for both family and business travellers. Overall, Royale Chulan Hotel KL offers good value for money, a great location, and reliable service. I would recommend it and consider staying again in the future.

To be honest, have not heard of this place before until Trip.com prompted. Pretty good reviews and decided to book for a 2D1N staycation with my sister. And lo and behold, was truly surprise by how huge the place was and all the facilities it came with. Washing machine, small kitchenette, dining, living room, bedroom, spacious bath and also a study. Comes with free WiFi too. 🙂 Had a slight hiccup with the WiFi (our fault actually) but maintenance came within minutes of our call. Kudos! Glad we booked this place and will definitely stay here again. No regrets.

Second time staying at Parkroyal Collection KL. Would stay again, as the hotel is in an excellent location, plus it has good facilities. Rooms are good too. Loved the gym and pool, though the pool got a bit crowded when I did my laps in the evening. It was really pleasant to work out in a gym surrounded by greenery, sunlight, and views of KL skyline. Bonus: tried out yoga for the first time at free yoga sessions during weekends :) Breakfast buffet was pretty good, with a generous spread. My favourites were the rice congee and fresh pisang emas (a local species of banana that is sweet and tasty). The local kuih were not as good as what we could buy at street vendors. I didn’t like any of the drinks (tried teh tarik, latte and soya milk), so I just drank plain water.

I had a wonderful stay at Pullman Kuala Lumpur, and the experience exceeded my expectations. One of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its convenient access to Pavilion Mall via a covered bridge crossing at Banyan Tree. It’s just a short walk from the hotel and makes getting to the mall extremely easy while avoiding the terrible traffic jams in the area. Getting a Grab was also very easy when heading further out, as the hotel is not located right in the middle of the main traffic congestion where vehicles can be stuck for hours just to travel a short distance. All the staff were well-groomed, friendly, and professional, and they consistently went the extra mile to provide excellent service to their guests. The breakfast spread was amazing. During our four-day stay, we enjoyed a wide variety of delicious dishes prepared by the chefs. We were also fortunate to be selected as Guest of the Day, which gave us access to the lounge. The lounge experience was fantastic, with à la carte breakfast, tea breaks, and cocktails served daily. The room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The housekeeping team did an excellent job keeping everything tidy, with drinks thoughtfully topped up. I especially loved the room lighting and the sound system — the bass really added to the ambiance and made the stay even more enjoyable. What truly touched me was the hotel’s attention to detail. They noted that this was my birthday trip and surprised me with a cake and balloons. It was such a thoughtful gesture and made my stay incredibly special and memorable. I would strongly recommend Pullman Kuala Lumpur to anyone looking for a cosy, relaxing stay in KL. It truly made my trip worthwhile and unforgettable. Thank you, Pullman, for such a memorable experience.

We stayed here for 1 night, our room was located ag 29th floor, check in was smooth and the front counter staff (Rabbiatul) was helpful. The hotel also extended my check out to 2pm. The room was huge and clean, and I loved the amenities provided. The location of the hotel was convenient as well, we commuted around by grab. The Pavillion shopping mall is just 8-10mins walk away. We checked out the sky pool in the afternoon and it was quiet. Great view of the city centre.

Parking available at the basement(please mention your plate no to the receptionist), check in process also fast (they even upgrade my room from superior room to Executive for free. I appreciate it so much!) and i even request for baby cot too. The view from my room(Room 1019) was TRX tower. I love the location. Less than five minutes walk to Sg Wang, Lot10, Star Hills. Around 10 minutes walk to Pavilion/TRX. So convenient. Smack in the middle of Bukit Bintang Area. The room is spacious, very comfortable and equipped with iron and hair dryer. Conmplete with toiletteries and coffee tea. Hotel staff is very warm, attentive and helpful. Special mention to the housekeeping staff, Farhad for cleaning our room nicely. Breakfast buffer has a good selection and ample seating. The vibe is chill and relaxing, so nice for our stay in KL. I will come back to Royal Hotel and I recommend the rest to give this hotel a try.

One of the best staycations I’ve had in KL! The place is right in the city centre—just across the road is the famous Jalan Alor, packed with local street food. My room was peaceful since it didn’t face the main road, and it offered a stunning view of Merdeka 118, the world’s second tallest building, right from the living room. The room is completed with amenities. Plus, if you enjoy local art and creative spaces, GMBB Mall is just next door, which is a bonus for you.

Location of the hotel is within walking distance (within 1 km) to many shopping malls, train station and Jln Alor. I understand that the hotel is more than 10 years old , but it looks very well maintained. Hotel staffs are very friendly and house keeping did a very good job. Our room and bathroom were very clean. Nice view of the Twin Tower from the lift lobby. And there is a Starbucks outlet at the hotel lobby, very convenient for those that would like to have a quick cup of coffee and sone.pastries.

Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur – A Wonderful Stay in the Heart of the City The hotel is beautifully located in the Golden Triangle, just across from Pavilion KL, with stunning views of the Petronas Twin Towers. It’s slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of Bukit Bintang, yet still close enough for easy access — a perfect balance between convenience and tranquility. Upon check-in, guests are offered a selection of incense and essential oils for their room — a lovely and thoughtful personal touch. We stayed in the Signature Banyan Retreat, which was cozy, comfortable, and came with all the amenities you’d expect, plus a beautiful view of KL’s night skyline. We did encounter a minor issue on our first night when the room’s light switches stopped working, including the master switch. The maintenance engineer arrived promptly, even though it was close to midnight, and quickly resolved the issue with a system reset. Really appreciate how efficient and polite he was! We also dined at Torito, the hotel’s Peruvian-Japanese restaurant, and it was a delightful experience. The ceviche clásico is a must-try — so refreshing and full of flavor. The lomo saltado featured perfectly cooked medium-rare beef tenderloin, and the stone ceviche, a warm twist on the classic, was equally impressive. Unfortunately, we were too full to try dessert, but the attentive service made the meal memorable. Special thanks to Izat (Front Desk), Hakim (Breakfast), and all the other staff members whose names we didn’t catch, for their warmth, patience, and genuine hospitality. Their friendly smiles and willingness to help made our stay at Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur truly enjoyable.

The hotel is in a great location, and the outside area is nicely decorated with trees. There are plenty of food options nearby — nasi kandar, Minang dishes (like nasi padang) and lots of other interesting things to try. The nearest public transport is Medan Tuanku Monorail (about 300m) and Sultan Ismail LRT (around 400m), so it's super easy to get around. From here, I managed to visit a few places like Central Market, KL Forest Eco-Park, hopped on the KL Hop-On Hop-Off bus at Bukit Bintang and more. The room itself was clean and comfy. The aircond and hot shower worked perfectly. I absolutely loved the herbal scent of the shower gel and shampoo — felt like I was in a spa! That said, it would’ve been even better if there was a bidet next to the toilet for cleaning up and maybe some hangers or a proper spot to hang clothes. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here and would definitely consider coming back next time.

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How to Claim It in Malaysia

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

Here’s a step-by-step guide based on my experience:

🛍️ At the Store:

  • Shop as usual at a participating Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) retailer. Look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo.
  • When paying, inform the cashier that you want to claim a tax refund.
  • Present your original passport for verification. The store will record your details and issue a tax refund form along with your purchase receipt.
  • Keep all your tax refund documents and receipts organized in a dedicated pouch or folder.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive early—at least 3 hours before your flight to allow time for the refund process.
  • Proceed to the Tourist Refund Counter located after immigration at international airports like KLIA, KLIA2, or Penang.
  • Present your passport, original receipts, purchased goods, and refund forms for verification. Customs officers may inspect your goods.
  • Once approved, you can claim your refund either in cash (Malaysian Ringgit) or credited back to your credit card, depending on the airport’s facilities.

🧠 Tip: Some airports may have different procedures or opening hours for the refund counter, so it’s best to check in advance and keep your items easily accessible for inspection.

🔥 Malaysia Tax Refund Tips

Here are some useful tips I wish I knew before shopping in Malaysia – learn from my experience! 👇

🔖 Keep Your Passport Handy

Don’t tuck it away deep in your bag – you’ll need to show it every time you shop at a participating store.

🗃️ Stay Organized

Keep all your receipts, tax refund forms, and purchase documents together. I recommend using a small folder or pouch to avoid losing anything.

🛍️ Plan Your Purchases

Try to shop at fewer stores but reach the minimum spend of RM300 per receipt to qualify for the refund, rather than making many small purchases.

⛔ Keep Goods Accessible

Customs may want to inspect your purchases at the airport, so keep items unpacked and easy to present.

📍 Airport Refund Counters Are Your Backup

If you forget to get your refund at the store, you can still claim it at Tourist Refund Counters located at airports like KLIA, KLIA2, and Penang International Airport.

📱 Use Translation Apps

Some shop staff may have limited English, so using apps like Google Translate can help speed up communication.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Paying with a card that offers good exchange rates and no extra fees can save you money compared to cash exchanges.
