Malaysia Tax Refund Guide – Claim SST as a Tourist

Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from an amazing shopping spree right here in Malaysia – and wow, the deals are still fresh in my mind! Whether it’s skincare, snacks, or the latest gadgets, Malaysia is full of great finds. But here’s something many international visitors might not know you can actually claim a tax refund on your shopping here! That’s right – with Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), eligible tourists can get back the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST) on purchases made at participating stores.

So if you’re visiting Malaysia and planning to shop, don’t miss out on this chance to save. Let me walk you through everything you need to know – from how the refund system works to how you can claim it smoothly before heading home. ✨💼💴

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemption in Malaysia

When shopping in Malaysia, you'll often see prices that already include the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST), which is applied to most goods and services.

But here’s the good news: International tourists can get a refund on this tax for eligible purchases made at participating stores under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of nasi lemak or cendol 🍽️
✅ Extra skincare or handicrafts to bring home 💆‍♀️
✅ And more souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales and Service Tax (SST) in Malaysia

Petronas Twin Towers

Malaysia’s Sales and Service Tax (SST) is set at 6%, and it applies to many everyday purchases, including:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

You might not notice it at first, but this tax can quietly add up—especially if you're shopping in popular spots like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Suria KLCC, or IOI City Mall.

🧠 Tip: Keep an eye on whether prices are marked as “inclusive” or “exclusive” of SST. Most stores include the tax in the displayed price, but it’s always good to double-check.

📜 The Current Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Malaysia?

Independence Square

In Malaysia, tax refunds for tourists fall under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), and only certain items are eligible. Here’s a breakdown of what qualifies:

1. General Goods

This includes items like clothing, electronics, souvenirs, accessories, and other non-consumable products.

Conditions:

  • Minimum spend: RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating store.
  • Purchases must be made within 3 months before your departure from Malaysia.
  • Items must be taken out of Malaysia within 3 months of purchase.
  • You must depart from an international airport (KLIA, KLIA2, Penang, etc.).

2. Consumable Goods

Some consumables like packaged snacks and personal care items may be eligible, but they must be unused and taken out of Malaysia in your luggage.

Note:

  • Tax refund only applies to purchases made at approved TRS retailers (look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo).
  • Items must be shown at the refund counter before check-in, along with your passport and receipts.

⚠️ Not all stores combine receipts or offer refunds on both categories, so always ask at the counter or check for the TRS sign before shopping!

✅ Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Malaysia?

To qualify for a tax refund under Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), here’s what you need to meet:

✅ You must be:

  • A non-Malaysian citizen
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Visiting Malaysia on a tourist visa or under social visit status
  • Departing Malaysia by air from one of the approved international airports (e.g., KLIA, KLIA2, Penang International Airport)

✅ You must:

  • Present your original passport at the time of purchase (photocopies are not accepted)
  • Spend at least RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating TRS store
  • Make the purchase within 3 months before your departure date
  • Take the goods out of Malaysia – items must be for personal use only, not for resale or commercial purposes

✈️ Important: Customs may inspect your purchased goods before departure, so keep all receipts, your passport, and items easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.

Facilities: Some reviews mentioned poor facilities, but I found them to be quite unique and excellent. You can tell from the photos. The only thing is the hairdryer in my room was quite old, but all other facilities were great. Hygiene: The hygiene was excellent, very clean. I brought my own sheets but didn't even need to use them. Environment: Fantastic! I was initially worried about insects and snakes, but I didn't see any, which put my mind at ease. Service: The front desk staff was very attentive during check-in. It was my first time traveling abroad alone, and my English isn't great, but I was checked in and in my room in under ten minutes. Staff helped with luggage both getting in and out of the car. When I was lost, one staff member even helped me with directions and chatted a bit. In short, everyone from the main entrance to the front desk, to the restaurant, and even staff I just passed by, greeted me with a smile. They were all very polite and friendly. I will definitely stay at this hotel again when I visit Kuala Lumpur!

I had a wonderful stay at The Face Suites. The room was very spacious, clean, and comfortable, with a beautiful city view. It felt more like staying in a luxury apartment than a hotel, which was perfect for relaxing. The location is excellent, very convenient and close to many attractions. The highlight of the stay was definitely the rooftop infinity pool — the view is stunning, especially at night. It’s a great place to unwind and enjoy Kuala Lumpur’s skyline. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the check-in process was smooth. Overall, it was great value for money, and I truly enjoyed my stay. I would definitely recommend The Face Suites and would love to stay here again.

Traveling to Kuala Lumpur for Chinese New Year, I saw a lot of good reviews on Trip.com and booked a 4-night stay. On the very first day, there was a power outage. I woke up at 3 AM because of the heat. The next day, after being out all day, I returned to a completely dark hotel lobby – no electricity. My room had power, but no hot water. After a long day of sightseeing, I couldn't shower. I was too tired, so I just went to sleep, and finally had hot water in the morning. On the third day, I came back again to no hot water. When I asked the front desk, they said it would be an hour until it came back on. I was so annoyed and hung up. Luckily, Trip.com's international team was constantly helping me communicate. Thankfully, it didn't completely ruin my trip, but it did make the vacation a bit unpleasant. Trip.com told me they'd never encountered this situation before, but it definitely happened to me.

Had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The staff especially Mr Zaidi from Club Lounge were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The location is convenient with many restaurants nearby. Sahur was delicious with a good variety. Overall, a great experience and I would happily stay here again

Have a pleasant 1 night stay. Excellent cleanliness in our room and very good location (walking distance to Pavilion KL and air condition KLCC-Bukit Bintang Pedestrian Walkway). Could have a more elevated experience if welcome drink is provided. Parking is slightly inconvenience during arrival as we need to drive up to level 5 general parking area before check in, as basement car park is only accessible via room key card. A minor issue, nevertheless a temporary parking area near ground level would be a great additional amenities for guest who drive to temporary park their car while waiting for check in.

Is this really a 5-star hotel? The room wasn't that big, but the bathroom was quite spacious, which was okay. They don't provide bottled mineral water; instead, they offer filtered water in glass bottles with two glasses. If you want more, it's 28 MYR per bottle. The kettle was well hidden; I didn't even notice it at first. There are no bathrobes, so to go to the 11th-floor pool, you have to just wrap yourself in a bath towel. The breakfast looked like it had a lot of choices, but not many options for a traditional Chinese palate. The pool isn't very big and is quite shallow; the deepest part is only 1.2 meters. It's open from 7 AM to 8 PM, and you can see the Petronas Twin Towers from there. The hotel is connected to a mall, accessible from both the first and fourth floors.

Room was spacious and clean, with basic hotel amenities provided. Excellent shower pressure with 3 towels provided for each guest (body, face and hand). Some degree of wear can be seen on certain furnishings and sound proofing may not be the best (can hear next door shower sounds clearly and corridor chatters can be quite audible). Gym is equipped with new technogym body analysis machine and all gym equipments appears new and well maintained. Buffet breakfast was basic, nothing to shout about although one can certainly fill their tummy without issues here.

Overall, it's pretty good. The views are expansive, the room is spacious, and the bed is comfortable. It's comparable to a decent Vienna Hotel in China, definitely a bit above a 3-star level. The breakfast has a wide variety, including Chinese, Western, and Indian options, and the taste is quite good. I was pleasantly surprised that they offer both soft-boiled and hard-boiled eggs – that's a real plus! It would be even better if the noodles came with a few side dishes, like scrambled eggs with tomatoes or shredded pork with pickled vegetables. The management is also excellent, and the staff are very professional.

The service was good. However, it was a pretty old hotel, and many of the fixtures were showing signs of wear and tear. A point to note: it stated that to protect the environment, they would only do house cleaning every 3 days. Due to this, I did not secure my belongings properly, and when I returned from outside, my room had been cleaned. This needs to be communicated to the user clearly to prevent any misunderstanding.

I stayed at Hotel Royal Kuala Lumpur for two nights and found it to be a very practical choice for a short city stay. The biggest advantage is the location in Bukit Bintang — close to shopping areas, restaurants, and public transport, which made moving around Kuala Lumpur easy. The Deluxe room was clean, quiet, and comfortable, with a good bed and enough space to relax after a day in the city. Check-in and check-out were smooth, and the staff handled everything professionally. Overall, this hotel offers good value for money considering its central location. A solid option if you want to stay right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur without overpaying.

We enjoyed our stay at Oakwood Hotel. The room was spacious and even came with a small living area, which made it feel extra comfortable. The toilet was large too, with a separate bathtub and standing shower. Hot water worked perfectly and the water pressure was strong – definitely a plus. There was also a pantry area equipped with filtered water, an electric kettle, and a microwave, which was very convenient. The hotel has a pool as well, though our schedule was too packed to fully utilise it. One thing to note is that the TV could use an upgrade, as the image wasn’t very sharp and the colours sometimes shifted. It didn’t affect us much since we were mostly on our phones anyway. Another minor downside is that the lift doesn’t go to B1, where most of the parking lots are, so it requires a bit of extra walking. Overall, a comfortable and well-equipped stay with great room space and facilities. Would consider returning!

The room was well-ventilated and had a small balcony with a street view, but the surrounding area was very noisy. The bathroom was tiny. Perhaps Petaling Street itself is just a mixed bag. Breakfast options were very limited, but for Chinese New Year, the price was quite a steal. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't anyone who spoke Chinese. We managed to communicate with a combination of gestures and a translation app.

I personally feel that this stay was very satisfying. My partner and I, along with our two parents, stayed at this hotel. I meticulously compared several options on Trip.com before ultimately choosing this one. Firstly, the environment was exceptionally clean, and everyone was incredibly polite. On our first night, it was quite late when we took a Grab from the train station to the hotel. It was our first time using Grab, and I forgot to select a payment method. When we arrived, the driver asked for cash, which I didn't have. The receptionist at the entrance kindly paid the cash for us, and we were able to find him and reimburse him the next day. Everyone was very welcoming upon arrival, and there were even welcome fruits and snacks. The rooftop terrace was even more delightful; we could swim and enjoy the views up there until 7:00 PM every day. We had a very close-up view of the Kuala Lumpur Tower. I believe that the next time I visit Kuala Lumpur, I will choose to stay at this hotel again.

Service: There's a front desk, making check-in and check-out very convenient. Environment: It's 400 meters from the subway station, a 15-minute walk to Pavilion KL, and other attractions are also nearby. Facilities: The hotel doesn't provide disposable toiletries or slippers, but it does have a washing machine. Hygiene: The hygiene is quite poor. The bathroom had a strange smell, and there were especially many cockroaches, countless cockroaches.

The environment and hygiene were pretty good, and it's very close to the Petronas Twin Towers, making it super convenient for taxis. The only thing was that on the first day, we found ants on the bed. We requested a room change, and the staff's service attitude was excellent. The cleaning guy was also very diligent and responsible, actively helping us switch rooms. Overall, I'm quite satisfied.

I booked the Sky Suite for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day quite a while in advance. The room was spacious, and both the bedroom and living room offered views of the Petronas Towers. However, the room windows were quite dirty, which made photos turn out poorly. The cleanliness was excellent, and there was plenty of bottled water in the room. We received welcome fruit, but it wasn't provided daily. If the hotel were more thoughtful, they could have offered something like sweet soup on subsequent days, as we couldn't finish the fruit. The room rate was quite high; at 6,000 a day, it felt a bit overpriced. We stayed for three consecutive days and didn't even receive a souvenir. The essential oil in the room smelled nice, and I particularly liked the scent of the essential oil in the hallway. Here are a few areas that need improvement: 1. The air conditioning was too cold and couldn't be adjusted above 24 degrees Celsius. 2. The faucet in the sink had no buffer, so water would splash all over you as soon as you turned it on. 3. The main bathroom light was linked to the exhaust fan, which was incredibly loud. Any time you needed more light, the exhaust fan would also turn on, creating a lot of noise. 4. Room soundproofing was poor; we could hear noise from both the hallway and the bar upstairs. 5. The duvet was too thin, and because the air conditioning was so cold, we froze at night. The swimming pool was nice, but there was only one changing room. I'd recommend changing in your room before going for a swim. The rooftop bar charged 1200 MYR for two people on New Year's Eve, and the fireworks were terrible. Overall, this hotel offers very poor value for money.

One of the best budget hotels in KL. I’m very satisfied with all the facilities provided by this hotel. Simple yet so clean and vibing! If you are into simple design but still want to have the genZ instagram worthy kind of vibe, this is the hotel. Parking a bit limited with flat rate RM15 per day which is for me affordable and convenient since the parking lot located behind the hotel. The room is not that big but just enough for two. Fluffy pillows with nice mattress, less noisy and they even provide you with earplugs upon request. Easy access with LRT station and mall. Not to mentioned, Zus coffee is just across the road. Overall, I will give 4.8/5. Keep it up Momo!

Good location, be able to walk to Jalan Alor and Bukit Bintang easily. However, during my stay there was bad smell in my room assumed that from the carpet. My last night, there is some smoking scent which I guess the beside room was smoking and the scent is from bathroom duct. The most terrible thing is that there is no exhaust fan in the bathroom. Anyway I paid considerably low price, so it’s one of the choice for who don’t expect much.

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How to Claim It in Malaysia

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

Here’s a step-by-step guide based on my experience:

🛍️ At the Store:

  • Shop as usual at a participating Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) retailer. Look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo.
  • When paying, inform the cashier that you want to claim a tax refund.
  • Present your original passport for verification. The store will record your details and issue a tax refund form along with your purchase receipt.
  • Keep all your tax refund documents and receipts organized in a dedicated pouch or folder.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive early—at least 3 hours before your flight to allow time for the refund process.
  • Proceed to the Tourist Refund Counter located after immigration at international airports like KLIA, KLIA2, or Penang.
  • Present your passport, original receipts, purchased goods, and refund forms for verification. Customs officers may inspect your goods.
  • Once approved, you can claim your refund either in cash (Malaysian Ringgit) or credited back to your credit card, depending on the airport’s facilities.

🧠 Tip: Some airports may have different procedures or opening hours for the refund counter, so it’s best to check in advance and keep your items easily accessible for inspection.

🏪 Duty-Free and Tax-Free Shopping in Malaysia – Where to Go?

🔥 Malaysia Tax Refund Tips

Source: iMoney.my

Here are some useful tips I wish I knew before shopping in Malaysia – learn from my experience! 👇

🔖 Keep Your Passport Handy

Don’t tuck it away deep in your bag – you’ll need to show it every time you shop at a participating store.

🗃️ Stay Organized

Keep all your receipts, tax refund forms, and purchase documents together. I recommend using a small folder or pouch to avoid losing anything.

🛍️ Plan Your Purchases

Try to shop at fewer stores but reach the minimum spend of RM300 per receipt to qualify for the refund, rather than making many small purchases.

⛔ Keep Goods Accessible

Customs may want to inspect your purchases at the airport, so keep items unpacked and easy to present.

📍 Airport Refund Counters Are Your Backup

If you forget to get your refund at the store, you can still claim it at Tourist Refund Counters located at airports like KLIA, KLIA2, and Penang International Airport.

📱 Use Translation Apps

Some shop staff may have limited English, so using apps like Google Translate can help speed up communication.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Paying with a card that offers good exchange rates and no extra fees can save you money compared to cash exchanges.
