Malaysia Tax Refund Guide – Claim SST as a Tourist

Hi friends! 👋 I just got back from an amazing shopping spree right here in Malaysia – and wow, the deals are still fresh in my mind! Whether it’s skincare, snacks, or the latest gadgets, Malaysia is full of great finds. But here’s something many international visitors might not know you can actually claim a tax refund on your shopping here! That’s right – with Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), eligible tourists can get back the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST) on purchases made at participating stores.

So if you’re visiting Malaysia and planning to shop, don’t miss out on this chance to save. Let me walk you through everything you need to know – from how the refund system works to how you can claim it smoothly before heading home. ✨💼💴

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemption in Malaysia

When shopping in Malaysia, you'll often see prices that already include the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST), which is applied to most goods and services.

But here’s the good news: International tourists can get a refund on this tax for eligible purchases made at participating stores under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). 🙌

That means:

✅ More budget for another round of nasi lemak or cendol 🍽️
✅ Extra skincare or handicrafts to bring home 💆‍♀️
✅ And more souvenirs for your family and friends 🎁

💡 Sales and Service Tax (SST) in Malaysia

Petronas Twin Towers

Malaysia’s Sales and Service Tax (SST) is set at 6%, and it applies to many everyday purchases, including:

🛍️ Fashion and accessories
📱 Electronics and gadgets
💄 Beauty and skincare products
🍫 Snacks and packaged foods
🧃 Non-alcoholic beverages

You might not notice it at first, but this tax can quietly add up—especially if you're shopping in popular spots like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Suria KLCC, or IOI City Mall.

🧠 Tip: Keep an eye on whether prices are marked as “inclusive” or “exclusive” of SST. Most stores include the tax in the displayed price, but it’s always good to double-check.

📜 The Current Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Malaysia?

Independence Square

In Malaysia, tax refunds for tourists fall under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), and only certain items are eligible. Here’s a breakdown of what qualifies:

1. General Goods

This includes items like clothing, electronics, souvenirs, accessories, and other non-consumable products.

Conditions:

  • Minimum spend: RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating store.
  • Purchases must be made within 3 months before your departure from Malaysia.
  • Items must be taken out of Malaysia within 3 months of purchase.
  • You must depart from an international airport (KLIA, KLIA2, Penang, etc.).

2. Consumable Goods

Some consumables like packaged snacks and personal care items may be eligible, but they must be unused and taken out of Malaysia in your luggage.

Note:

  • Tax refund only applies to purchases made at approved TRS retailers (look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo).
  • Items must be shown at the refund counter before check-in, along with your passport and receipts.

⚠️ Not all stores combine receipts or offer refunds on both categories, so always ask at the counter or check for the TRS sign before shopping!

✅ Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Malaysia?

To qualify for a tax refund under Malaysia’s Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS), here’s what you need to meet:

✅ You must be:

  • A non-Malaysian citizen
  • Holding a valid international passport
  • Visiting Malaysia on a tourist visa or under social visit status
  • Departing Malaysia by air from one of the approved international airports (e.g., KLIA, KLIA2, Penang International Airport)

✅ You must:

  • Present your original passport at the time of purchase (photocopies are not accepted)
  • Spend at least RM300 (including SST) in a single receipt at a participating TRS store
  • Make the purchase within 3 months before your departure date
  • Take the goods out of Malaysia – items must be for personal use only, not for resale or commercial purposes

✈️ Important: Customs may inspect your purchased goods before departure, so keep all receipts, your passport, and items easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.

I was imagining fireworks in our faces kinda of effect in welcoming the new year however we were informed that the view was compromised by other taller neighbouring buildings which means this was beyond anyones control. Anyhow , the intend was to be with our little family together ushering the new year. We enjoyed the kids play room as our little toddler roamed free and got to explore all the toys and space to her hearts content. Breakfast was good, I enjoyed the bread station as they offered the sandwhich spreads (tuna/ egg mayo) where you can build your own sandwhich. Yummy! Overall nice experience for us.

Facilities: Some reviews mentioned poor facilities, but I found them to be quite unique and excellent. You can tell from the photos. The only thing is the hairdryer in my room was quite old, but all other facilities were great. Hygiene: The hygiene was excellent, very clean. I brought my own sheets but didn't even need to use them. Environment: Fantastic! I was initially worried about insects and snakes, but I didn't see any, which put my mind at ease. Service: The front desk staff was very attentive during check-in. It was my first time traveling abroad alone, and my English isn't great, but I was checked in and in my room in under ten minutes. Staff helped with luggage both getting in and out of the car. When I was lost, one staff member even helped me with directions and chatted a bit. In short, everyone from the main entrance to the front desk, to the restaurant, and even staff I just passed by, greeted me with a smile. They were all very polite and friendly. I will definitely stay at this hotel again when I visit Kuala Lumpur!

Thank you The Face Suites for the great experience staying there. All are excellent include the view that the most important point and interesting thing to do there. The only thing need to be improved was the check in and check out process that made us uncomfortable standing ant wait for our turn more than 15 minutes. There was only one staff at the reception counter. Lastly, still recommended this hotel for their comfortable room and complete amenities. 👍👍👍

The location isn't great. It's right next to a light rail station's downhill end, so you hear the constant screeching of train brakes from 6 AM onwards. Plus, it's near a highway, so there's a lot of loud motorcycle noise at night. To top it off, a large mosque nearby starts broadcasting prayers loudly over speakers at 6 AM. If you're sensitive to noise and need good sleep, I'd recommend thinking twice about this hotel. I checked in around midnight on January 29th and specifically asked the front desk for a quiet room, but they still put me on the noisiest side. Even on the 20th floor, I couldn't sleep at all due to the constant noise throughout the night. The hotel's front desk is oddly located on the second floor of a small shopping mall, right next to a McDonald's. Most attractions require a taxi or public transport to get to. On the bright side, you can get free bottled water from the front desk anytime, and the room cleaning was quite good.

I recently stayed at the ParkRoyal Collection Kuala Lumpur and had a wonderful experience. The standout feature of this hotel is undoubtedly the staff. From the front desk to the corridors, everyone is incredibly helpful and friendly. I especially want to give a shout-out to the housekeeping team—they always greeted me with the warmest smiles whenever we crossed paths in the hallway, which truly made me feel at home especially as a solo traveler. The only thing to be mindful of is the breakfast service. It can get very packed, especially during peak hours. I’d recommend managing your time properly and heading down a bit earlier to avoid the long waiting queues. Other than that, it was a great stay in a great location!

I had a wonderful stay at Pullman Kuala Lumpur, and the experience exceeded my expectations. One of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its convenient access to Pavilion Mall via a covered bridge crossing at Banyan Tree. It’s just a short walk from the hotel and makes getting to the mall extremely easy while avoiding the terrible traffic jams in the area. Getting a Grab was also very easy when heading further out, as the hotel is not located right in the middle of the main traffic congestion where vehicles can be stuck for hours just to travel a short distance. All the staff were well-groomed, friendly, and professional, and they consistently went the extra mile to provide excellent service to their guests. The breakfast spread was amazing. During our four-day stay, we enjoyed a wide variety of delicious dishes prepared by the chefs. We were also fortunate to be selected as Guest of the Day, which gave us access to the lounge. The lounge experience was fantastic, with à la carte breakfast, tea breaks, and cocktails served daily. The room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The housekeeping team did an excellent job keeping everything tidy, with drinks thoughtfully topped up. I especially loved the room lighting and the sound system — the bass really added to the ambiance and made the stay even more enjoyable. What truly touched me was the hotel’s attention to detail. They noted that this was my birthday trip and surprised me with a cake and balloons. It was such a thoughtful gesture and made my stay incredibly special and memorable. I would strongly recommend Pullman Kuala Lumpur to anyone looking for a cosy, relaxing stay in KL. It truly made my trip worthwhile and unforgettable. Thank you, Pullman, for such a memorable experience.

There's really not much to fault, though it's a bit out of the way, located north of Kuala Lumpur. Besides the hotel's own mall, there's nothing else to do around. The service was excellent; they helped me with my luggage to the taxi and offered free luggage storage. The best part was that checking out before noon wasn't an issue at all. The room was spacious enough, but my room was right next to the elevator, so I had to sleep with headphones on 😭. Avoid rooms near the elevators on any floor. Also, the hotel is a bit old, and the facilities don't feel very convenient. Adjoining rooms have a connecting door, and the soundproofing isn't great either. Be aware that bottled water is chargeable. I arrived late at night when the mall was closed, so I had to go to a nearby 7-Eleven to buy water.

Room was spacious and clean, with basic hotel amenities provided. Excellent shower pressure with 3 towels provided for each guest (body, face and hand). Some degree of wear can be seen on certain furnishings and sound proofing may not be the best (can hear next door shower sounds clearly and corridor chatters can be quite audible). Gym is equipped with new technogym body analysis machine and all gym equipments appears new and well maintained. Buffet breakfast was basic, nothing to shout about although one can certainly fill their tummy without issues here.

The check in process was bad, I ask to check in was told it is check out time from 12-3pm. The receptionist didn't informed when room was ready let me keep asking for room availability. I wasn't informed when I could check in. Room is not very clean, stains in basin and bathroom floor. Stain on towel. Location is good, there is a restaurant at ground level providing good food. Overall is 3 out of 5. Price is good. Could work on check in process.

I booked two rooms: a Deluxe Tower View for my parents and a Superior Tower View for myself. The Deluxe Tower View was quite good, with a panoramic viewing window and a large sofa. The Superior Tower View was just a standard queen-sized room, but both were clean. At least, I didn't encounter any of the cockroaches or bloodstains mentioned in other reviews. Housekeeping was prompt every day. Toothpaste and toothbrushes were only provided in the bathroom upon request. The front desk and service staff were all very friendly. One staff member at the front desk could speak Chinese, while the others only knew 'Hello, how are you?'. Regardless, their attitudes were excellent. Breakfast was also good, not as unpalatable as some reviews suggested. Even my parents, both over 70, found it delicious, especially the rice noodles, 'teh tarik' (pulled tea), and croissants. The coffee was also nice. The restaurant was always busy in the mornings, with about half being Malay and Indian guests, and the other half Chinese and Westerners. The only downside to this hotel was the Wi-Fi; it was practically impossible to connect. Although the front desk staff explained the connection method in detail, it required registering as a member, which was cumbersome and I couldn't complete it. It's possible I was doing it wrong. However, there are several noteworthy spots around the hotel: 1. **Monorail View from Restaurant:** When dining at the first-floor restaurant, you can watch the monorail pass right by the window. 2. **Chow Kit Market:** Located next to the hotel, this market is open until after midnight. You can find vegetables, seafood, fruits, daily necessities, and snacks. The durian stall, particularly the first one, sells delicious local durians for 10-25 MYR each. The taste and texture are different from durians back home, offering great value for money. 3. **Rooftop Bar:** The hotel's 25th-floor rooftop bar offers panoramic views of downtown Kuala Lumpur, with the Petronas Towers right in front of you. A Tiger Beer costs 30 MYR. 4. **Grilled Corn Stall:** Every evening, a couple with a cute little girl and a cat sets up a grilled corn stall outside the hotel. Many locals, including Grab drivers, go out of their way to buy it. The grilled corn costs 5 MYR each, first grilled with butter, then topped with a delicious and non-greasy spicy sauce. 5. **Nearby Supermarket:** Diagonally opposite the hotel is a three-story supermarket. Though its entrance looks small, it's a local favorite for daily necessities, offering authentic Malaysian spices, seasonings, pastries, chocolates, and small household items. Prices are definitely much cheaper than the supermarket at Pavilion, which is 1.8 kilometers away, making it a great place to buy gifts and personal items.

The location is decent, about 800 meters from the Petronas Twin Towers; you can see them by turning right out of the hotel and walking straight. The lobby was cozy and had a lovely Christmas atmosphere. It was very convenient to have power outlets by the bed that didn't require an adapter. However, the cleanliness was just average. The worst part was the front desk service; they were cold and unfriendly. A male staff member claimed I had no reservation, and even after showing him my confirmation, he still refused to check me in. I had to make an international call to Ctrip. Soon after, a plump woman who seemed to be a supervisor came out and processed my check-in, but she had a sour expression and offered no apology. Such service shouldn't be the management style of an Ibis hotel, yet it genuinely happened at the Ibis Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

The facilities, like the sinks, elevators, and hallways, are very old, which really detracted from the experience. The parking lot was also dirty and unappealing. The only redeeming quality was the good service. If you have a better budget, I'd recommend looking for another hotel.

Loved my experience at this hotel! For the price, it is an absolute steal. There is literally nothing I can complain about. It met all the standards of a classy hotel. So normal check-in is at 3pm. I got to the hotel at 10am and they gave me the room right away at no extra charge. Gee at the front desk was very helpful. The rooms are quiet, the AC works well and they have a modern shower. The gym is small but has decent amount of equipment. Pool is really nice. Laundry is relatively cheap at 4-5 Ringit per piece. Another huge plus, the location. It is so close to Jalan Alor Market, Pavilion mall and the Bukit Bintang monorail. All within 5 min walk.

We enjoyed our stay at Oakwood Hotel. The room was spacious and even came with a small living area, which made it feel extra comfortable. The toilet was large too, with a separate bathtub and standing shower. Hot water worked perfectly and the water pressure was strong – definitely a plus. There was also a pantry area equipped with filtered water, an electric kettle, and a microwave, which was very convenient. The hotel has a pool as well, though our schedule was too packed to fully utilise it. One thing to note is that the TV could use an upgrade, as the image wasn’t very sharp and the colours sometimes shifted. It didn’t affect us much since we were mostly on our phones anyway. Another minor downside is that the lift doesn’t go to B1, where most of the parking lots are, so it requires a bit of extra walking. Overall, a comfortable and well-equipped stay with great room space and facilities. Would consider returning!

The way to parking is a bit complicated but the parking fee is RM10 per stay (it is cheap compare to other hotels). Parking lot is spacious. The valet/security are very polite and always greeting us every day. The room is spacious but we did not get the capsule coffee on our second night. Perhaps now is low season so we were few of the Asian customers, all other guests were from oversea. Quite interesting. Haha. There are some restaurants at the opposite of the hotel and nearby in walking distance. We will stay again if there is a promotion.

Our short stay at the hotel suddenly turned into an unexpected satisfaction. Before booking this accommodation I read many positive comments, words of appreciation, recommendations, and must say the truth we were not disappointed. Even more, this simple hotel gave us a feeling of home, cosy warm home. Firstly, it’s welcome hospitality and friendly attitude, same like we come to see our old friend at his place😊. Secondly, the room is not huge, but very got all you need including peace of mind. Thirdly, the location is perfect, any direction you go you’ll enjoy your time on the road , walking or transiting. The hotel is definitely worth it’s value and for couples is a great place to stay and explore the capital👍👍👍

After staying at Banyan Tree Phuket, I've grown to love the brand. This Banyan Tree in Kuala Lumpur has an excellent location, with a direct covered walkway to Pavilion Mall. In the evenings, they diffuse essential oils, which really adds to the holiday vibe. Breakfast is à la carte, ensuring quality. The room views are superb, offering a panoramic view of all the iconic landmarks. When I went to the gym at night, I was planning to check out the pool, which faces the Petronas Towers – it's absolutely stunning. However, I had an unpleasant experience with the service. I booked the room over a month in advance, but the front desk informed me there were no king-sized beds available and wanted to put us in a twin room, suggesting we change rooms the next day. There was no apology or acknowledgment of their mistake. I clearly stated that customers shouldn't have to bear the consequences of their operational errors and demanded a proper resolution. Only after I repeatedly refused their unreasonable proposal did they upgrade us to a suite with a king-sized bed. Although the hotel apologized afterward, this initial experience was very disappointing, as their approach and attitude to handling the problem from the beginning were completely wrong.

I recently stayed at Momo's KL and had a unique experience that I appreciated, but there were a few aspects I wish could be improved. The bunkies were definitely a highlight! They offered a cozy and fun way to enjoy the hostel experience, with a modern twist. I loved the design and the overall vibe of the place, which made it a welcoming spot for travelers. However, the noise levels were a significant downside. The sound of flushing from the bathrooms was quite audible, which could be disruptive at times. Additionally, being located near the street meant that outside noise filtered in, making it challenging to get a good night’s sleep. Another issue was the proximity of one of the rooms to the speaker by the check-in area. If you’re someone who enjoys a good beat, it might be fine; however, for those looking for peace and quiet, be prepared to be woken up by music. In summary, while Momo's KL has a great atmosphere and unique bunkies that I enjoyed, the noise issues, both from the bathrooms and the street, along with the music from the check-in area, may detract from the overall experience for some guests. It’s a fun spot for social travelers, but if you're looking for tranquility, you might want to consider that!

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How to Claim It in Malaysia

tax refund

Source: Vibrant Finsery

Here’s a step-by-step guide based on my experience:

🛍️ At the Store:

  • Shop as usual at a participating Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) retailer. Look for the “Tax-Free Shopping” logo.
  • When paying, inform the cashier that you want to claim a tax refund.
  • Present your original passport for verification. The store will record your details and issue a tax refund form along with your purchase receipt.
  • Keep all your tax refund documents and receipts organized in a dedicated pouch or folder.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive early—at least 3 hours before your flight to allow time for the refund process.
  • Proceed to the Tourist Refund Counter located after immigration at international airports like KLIA, KLIA2, or Penang.
  • Present your passport, original receipts, purchased goods, and refund forms for verification. Customs officers may inspect your goods.
  • Once approved, you can claim your refund either in cash (Malaysian Ringgit) or credited back to your credit card, depending on the airport’s facilities.

🧠 Tip: Some airports may have different procedures or opening hours for the refund counter, so it’s best to check in advance and keep your items easily accessible for inspection.

🔥 Malaysia Tax Refund Tips

tax return

Source: iMoney.my

Here are some useful tips I wish I knew before shopping in Malaysia – learn from my experience! 👇

🔖 Keep Your Passport Handy

Don’t tuck it away deep in your bag – you’ll need to show it every time you shop at a participating store.

🗃️ Stay Organized

Keep all your receipts, tax refund forms, and purchase documents together. I recommend using a small folder or pouch to avoid losing anything.

🛍️ Plan Your Purchases

Try to shop at fewer stores but reach the minimum spend of RM300 per receipt to qualify for the refund, rather than making many small purchases.

⛔ Keep Goods Accessible

Customs may want to inspect your purchases at the airport, so keep items unpacked and easy to present.

📍 Airport Refund Counters Are Your Backup

If you forget to get your refund at the store, you can still claim it at Tourist Refund Counters located at airports like KLIA, KLIA2, and Penang International Airport.

📱 Use Translation Apps

Some shop staff may have limited English, so using apps like Google Translate can help speed up communication.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Paying with a card that offers good exchange rates and no extra fees can save you money compared to cash exchanges.
