Penang Hill Hike: A Complete Guide to the Best Trails and Attractions

I’ve always enjoyed nature and hiking, so Penang Hill (or Bukit Bendera) is one of my favourite spots in Penang. It’s basically the highest point on the island, and the view up there is honestly super worth it! City on one side, lush rainforest on the other. There are a few hiking trails you can take depending on your mood and fitness level. I’ve tried the easier Heritage Trail before, which follows the same route as the funicular train, and also heard about the Moon Gate Trail if you want something more challenging with nicer jungle views and stop points along the way.

In this guide, I’ll share how I usually get there, which trail I think is best for different types of hikers, and what you can expect along the way. I’ll also cover what to do once you reach the top😁 There are actually quite a few attractions and spots to chill.

⛰️ How to Get to Penang Hill?

Penang Hill is actually quite near Georgetown, just about 6 km away. Getting there is pretty easy, and I’ve tried a few different ways depending on how lazy or how adventurous I feel 😄

🚠 By Funicular Train

Honestly, this is the easiest and most popular way. I usually just go to the Lower Station at Air Itam, then take the funicular train straight up. The ride only takes around 10 minutes, but the views along the way are quite nice. It runs daily from morning till night, and during peak hours the train comes quite frequently, so you won’t wait too long. You can buy tickets online or at the counter, and there’s even a fast lane option if you don’t want to queue.

🚌 By Bus

If you want something cheaper, I’ve also taken Bus 204 from Komtar before. It goes all the way to Air Itam Market, which is near the Lower Station. It’s super budget-friendly (only a few ringgit), just a bit slower and depends on traffic. You can pay cash or use Touch ‘n Go.

🚗 By Grab / Taxi

This is my “comfort mode” 😆 Just book a Grab from Georgetown and you’ll reach in around 15–20 minutes. Not too expensive if you split with friends, and very convenient.

🏍️ By Car / Motorbike

If you’re driving yourself, you can also go up easily using Waze or Google Maps. There’s parking near the Lower Station, but do expect to pay a small hourly fee.

It's a little over ten minutes' walk to Shantou Street, nestled in a quiet, busy area. The hotel is clean and comfortable, and the staff are friendly. Very kind receptionist in lobby, who assisted my dad from the seat when noticing him having difficulties to get up. The unit was very clean, though a little bit of smell in toilet, i think it’s due to the piping system of high-rise building. Nice front room with city view. The another room besude entrance is a bit crowded. No wardrobe/clothes hanger, only coat stands. Convenient location with various local eateries in walking distance. Value for the money.

I live in a girls' dormitory, everyone has a sense of boundaries, and I will not talk noisy at night. At 11 o'clock in the evening, the lights are turned off on time, and the bar street is downstairs. The sound is ordinary and the music will be heard at night. It is very safe here, every room is equipped with a code lock, and everyone has quality and courtesy. The room is windowless and will have a little smell, but the indoor air-conditioning is open for 24 hours (the air-conditioning temperature can be adjusted), and it will be a bit cold at night. The bed is super single size, you can sleep 2 me, the space is large, the mattress is comfortable, there is no depression or anything, the light next to the bed can adjust the brightness, each bed is equipped with curtains, so it will not disturb others' sleep. The room is equipped with WiFi. There is no air-conditioning in the hall, there are fans, hot and cold water dispensers, disposable cups, coffee, dishes and tableware. The toilet is clean, with shower gel and water heater, but no hair dryer. It is a bit inconvenient that after someone checkout the bed, a male employee will come in at 12 noon that day to change the sheets and clean, but they will not disturb us, I will pull the curtains. Overall very satisfied, the price is cheap, 15 minutes walk after getting off the train, the seat is biased, it is convenient to go anywhere, will come again next time 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Great location, with lots of cafes and restaurants nearby, and close to the main historical sites. It's a cozy hotel, and the family room was spacious. Everything we needed was in the room (fridge, two AC units, hot water, mugs). On the downside, the room wasn't cleaned once during our 5-day stay. Also, the soundproofing was poor (though it didn't bother us much, it might be an issue for older guests). The door lock was a bit tricky to open.

This stay was absolutely fantastic! I definitely have to give it a five-star rating. The hotel's location is super convenient, with a 7-Eleven right downstairs and plenty of food options nearby. The room was spotless, and the bedding was soft and comfortable, ensuring I had a great night's sleep. Dining: The surrounding area is very convenient Apartment management specifications: professional reception process at the door, gym and other public facilities are also available to meet the basic needs of life and leisure. It was my moment satisfying trip ever! Highly recommend for anyone who doesn’t have a lot of budget for expensive hotels. It is actually a terrace house, place was always kept at its cleanest. The interior design is warm and cozy. Breakfast served in breads and jam, suitable for me and my boyfriend who always woke up near afternoon, so that we can get a quick bite before going out for lunch. It was very near the tourist attraction too (by car)! Also, our toilet was clogged on the second night, we got help by the staff over Whatsapp chat and they managed it perfectly by helping us to stay in another room for the night. Overall, a great experience and will definitely recommend!

I went with my mum to Penang and stayed at Macalister Terraces Hotel, so I decided to stay here due to its location. Great choice! The push cart chee cheong fun which is about 3 mins walk is great. Also easily accessible is new lane and the area with the famous chendol. As for the hotel itself, Liza really made the stay so much more pleasant. The room size is great for 2 people. However, I mentioned to the male manager on duty about the leaky water kettle when we boil water. To our dismay, he didn't do anything about it. Oh yes, I mentioned it was to celebrate my mum's birthday. In the earlier conversation, they mentioned that it would include a swan hotel, but they did not do it.

I recently stayed at DoubleTree by Hilton Penang and had such a wonderful experience. One of the highlights of my stay was the spa. The masseuse was incredibly attentive and took the time to understand my body’s needs, making the treatment both relaxing and rejuvenating. The breakfast buffet was another standout. There was an impressive variety of options each morning. On the first day, I enjoyed an English breakfast, pancakes, and nasi lemak. On the second day, I went for nasi tomato, roti canai, and waffles. The selection catered to both local and international tastes, making every breakfast something to look forward to. The beach is conveniently located near the hotel and feels almost like a private lagoon designed exclusively for guests. It offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for unwinding by the sea. The hotel also provides excellent facilities for all ages, including separate pools for kids and adults. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, such as foosball, snooker, and even a kids’ cinema area. Overall, it was a fun and memorable stay, with great hospitality, excellent food, relaxing wellness facilities, and plenty of activities for families and couples alike. I would definitely recommend DoubleTree by Hilton Penang for a relaxing getaway.

## Ambiance: The environment here is absolutely stunning, exceeding expectations. We booked the Rasa Wing, and although I'd read reviews worrying about dated rooms, that wasn't the case at all. The room materials and finishes felt very high-quality. However, since only a basic room was available, our window overlooked the parking lot and road, so we could hear traffic noise at night. If you bring earplugs, you won't hear it, so that's something to prepare for. ## Cleanliness: Cleanliness was excellent. Our room was serviced daily, and the hotel's public areas were also spotless. We even saw monkeys and lizards 🦎 – lucky us! 🍀 ## Facilities: The Rasa Wing has an exclusive adults-only pool, where many Caucasians were lounging and sunbathing. Sometimes it was hard to find a free sunbed. The large trees in the public areas are truly therapeutic, and every part of the hotel is beautiful. ## Service: Service was very friendly. As a Rasa Wing guest, you can choose between two restaurants for breakfast. Ferringhi Grill is à la carte, but I prefer buffets so I didn't go there. Each room also comes with executive privileges, including unlimited capsule coffee and tea bags, and the mini-bar is complimentary for the first fill. There's afternoon tea in the lobby lounge from 3 pm to 5 pm, followed by a complimentary cocktail hour from 5 pm to 7 pm. Before 8 pm, coffee, tea, and soft drinks are free-flowing, always accompanied by light snacks, desserts, cheese, salami, and fruit. If you have a smaller appetite, you could easily spend the whole day at the hotel and not even need dinner. Overall, it was a truly wonderful and incredibly restorative experience. We stayed for four nights and had a very enjoyable holiday.

Check-in 21/3 Check-out 24/3 I have been staying at this hotel since year 2000. This time around I really frustrated. We were assigned at unit no.85. The air-conditioner were not fully working. We have to clean the filters ourselves. Imagine a paying guest got to do these (refer the enclosed photos). Then still the same. A Bangladeshi so call the technician claimed that only when there is a complaint he will check, no periodic maintenance, just imagine! Next day we were assigned unit no.87, still the same. So we decided to shorten our stay & leave the hotel on 23/3. Then this Bangladeshi admitted that the owner/management had received lots of complaint from the guest about the room air-conditioner. Nevertheless I must praised Mr Naim & Ms Ayu whom had attended to these issues. They did their very best but it looks like the owner couldn’t be bother. Penaga used to be the best hotel but now no wonder the rating went down. Question here who is going to compensate our losses? Will Trip.com compensate? We paid but we get these rubbish. All I can say stay away from this hotel until they improve it.

New from Ascot group. Took over a UNESO Heritage building where I guess the structure can't be demolished or hack which makes the rooms small. For the price I pay for the garden patio, it is not worth the price. There are many properties surrounding that matches this price. For example G Hotel Kelawi or Prestige Hotel. Location is good no doubt but wanted to emphasise on the car park that is located left side of the building which no access to the rooms directly where you need to walk back out to the lobby to enter your rooms. Lobby main door entrance doesn't have any luggage friendly ramp to push up to the lobby. Something the property needs to consider as well as for wheel chair. Also, I had 2 crickets visiting my room when I was showering. LOL. Overall, the property is new, nice deco and good location. Just few suggestions above for the property to take into consideration.

This hotel is a very old room reform It's not really good. The sound of cooking downstairs at night It's like frying at your bedside. I didn’t sleep all night!! The accommodation experience was very poor and lightning protection was strong. At night, there was a continuous stir-fry sound downstairs. The movement was particularly large. The room was not soundproof at all. From the night to the late night, the whole night was disturbed and could not sleep. I couldn't even spend the money on the basic quiet rest, very disappointed.

Overall we are satisfied with this hotel but there are one thing I want to highlight. After check out the lady whom I liased with when I checked in told me that there are a burn mark on the bedsheet & also mattress protector and she will forfeit my deposit of RM50. I then asked my niece who slept on that bed & she said the burn mark was initially there but she doesn’t know that she must inform us about it. I’ve tried to explained to her many times that my 11 years old niece was sleeping on that bed & none of us in that room smoke or using any electrical appliances such as hair iron or curling iron or which non of us have with us so how can we the burn mark appeared there. She kept insisting that it was a fresh burn mark and she won’t let her hotel guests sleep with a burn mark bedsheet. This is totally a scam to us as I travel with my mum, my husband, niece (11 years old) & nephew (10 years old) could caused the damage as claimed. I do not have choices but just accept it as the lady keep saying that my deposit is not even enough to cover. Am not sure why they used such a tactic towards a family with kids and I have never had this problem in my entire booking with Trip.com. It was our mistake that we didn’t check the hotel room condition as we checked in very late - 8:26pm and all of us are really tired from travelling long journey. I’d say it was caused by their own staff which are 2 Bangladeshi guys who handle housekeeping but they blamed it on my family. Of course they won’t admit it as the lady keep saying they won’t provide burn bedsheet. This is totally not fair to me and one of the staff keep insisting me to pay the deposit when I arrived.
