Penang Hill Hike: A Complete Guide to the Best Trails and Attractions

I’ve always enjoyed nature and hiking, so Penang Hill (or Bukit Bendera) is one of my favourite spots in Penang. It’s basically the highest point on the island, and the view up there is honestly super worth it! City on one side, lush rainforest on the other. There are a few hiking trails you can take depending on your mood and fitness level. I’ve tried the easier Heritage Trail before, which follows the same route as the funicular train, and also heard about the Moon Gate Trail if you want something more challenging with nicer jungle views and stop points along the way.

In this guide, I’ll share how I usually get there, which trail I think is best for different types of hikers, and what you can expect along the way. I’ll also cover what to do once you reach the top😁 There are actually quite a few attractions and spots to chill.

⛰️ How to Get to Penang Hill?

Penang Hill is actually quite near Georgetown, just about 6 km away. Getting there is pretty easy, and I’ve tried a few different ways depending on how lazy or how adventurous I feel 😄

🚠 By Funicular Train

Honestly, this is the easiest and most popular way. I usually just go to the Lower Station at Air Itam, then take the funicular train straight up. The ride only takes around 10 minutes, but the views along the way are quite nice. It runs daily from morning till night, and during peak hours the train comes quite frequently, so you won’t wait too long. You can buy tickets online or at the counter, and there’s even a fast lane option if you don’t want to queue.

🚌 By Bus

If you want something cheaper, I’ve also taken Bus 204 from Komtar before. It goes all the way to Air Itam Market, which is near the Lower Station. It’s super budget-friendly (only a few ringgit), just a bit slower and depends on traffic. You can pay cash or use Touch ‘n Go.

🚗 By Grab / Taxi

This is my “comfort mode” 😆 Just book a Grab from Georgetown and you’ll reach in around 15–20 minutes. Not too expensive if you split with friends, and very convenient.

🏍️ By Car / Motorbike

If you’re driving yourself, you can also go up easily using Waze or Google Maps. There’s parking near the Lower Station, but do expect to pay a small hourly fee.

Soori Penang was meticulously restored from several 19th-century historical shophouses, emphasizing a blend of 'heritage × contemporary luxury.' The room layouts divide the living room, bedroom, and bathroom into three separate, distinct spaces. Everything was sufficient and comfortable. The house was beautiful, neat, and clean. The fridge was fully stocked with ice, and the washing machine even came with detergent. There was a garment steamer and plenty of hangers. An extra mattress was provided, and the bedroom was set up like a hotel. The Smart TV had games. Even the smallest details were taken care of: AAA batteries for the remote, a bucket, a water filter for hot and warm water, and enough clothes hangers. A clothes drying rack was also provided, along with extension plugs at every bed. The WiFi was fast, the fan wasn't noisy, and the air conditioning was cold. The water heater also worked perfectly. Just a minor setback: the mailboxes weren't arranged in numerical order, making it difficult to find ours (not the host's fault). The microwave also wasn't working, which the host might not have noticed.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this 2 bedroom apartment. We loved that there were 2 full bathrooms with showers and spacious for our family of 4. It was an easy and convenient base to explore Penang as there are several malls and food centres nearby, as well as all that Georgetown has to offer. The host was easy to contact and very accommodating in meeting our needs and requests.

Strictly speaking, it's just a villa converted into a hotel. Although it boasts over 100 years of history, century-old buildings are common throughout the city. The hotel's location is a bit out of the way. Compared to other hotels I've recently stayed at, like Dongjia and George Hotel, this one is flanked by residential buildings on both sides, and there are plans to build more behind it. It feels like it's being surrounded by tall buildings, which really takes away from the experience. Furthermore, the windows aren't very soundproof, and it's really close to the road, making it quite noisy during the day. It truly bears no resemblance to a manor. There were also a lot of mosquitoes; we didn't even open the windows, yet somehow had four or five mosquitoes in the room overnight. The room decor is decent, but honestly, many hotels in China can achieve this level of design. Also, this hotel doesn't have a gym. During check-in, the manager (I couldn't tell if they were Indian or Malaysian) had a very strong accent, and I really struggled to understand every word they said. The bar also offered two complimentary drinks in the evening, but they were very simple and tasted mediocre. If you're going to offer free drinks, do it properly, or don't offer them at all. The room's mini-bar was okay, and the complimentary snacks made the kids happy. The toiletries were Bvlgari. Breakfast was served in the hotel's ground-floor restaurant, which supposedly has been recognized by Michelin for two consecutive years. However, the breakfast was quite perfunctory. The apples and melon served were completely unsweetened and very stale; they clearly looked pre-cut, frozen for a long time, discolored, and had a terrible texture. When I ordered English breakfast tea, I wasn't asked if I wanted milk. The pepper in the pepper shaker wouldn't come out because the grains were too large. A salmon bagel was decent. Overall, the breakfast portions were average, and the taste was just so-so. After checking out, we immediately went to another restaurant to eat again. All in all, this hotel's price was not cheap compared to other hotels on this trip, but the overall experience was just average. Of course, there were some positives, such as every staff member being very enthusiastic. The bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable, which I really appreciate.

This time in Penang, we chose The Millen over E&O, and we weren't disappointed. It was the most satisfying of the three hotels we stayed at during our trip to Malaysia. From check-in to daily comings and goings, room cleaning, breakfast, turn-down service, and everything in between, you could really feel the hotel staff's dedication and enthusiasm. From the sea view room, you can see the ocean directly from your bed, though if you stand by the window, the buildings opposite look a bit run-down below. The hotel is about a ten-minute taxi ride to Mural Street (a 30-minute walk, we clocked it), and 30-40 minutes to Batu Ferringhi beach. Oh, and you absolutely must try the toasted bread with soft-boiled eggs for breakfast – it's better than the famous Toh Soon Cafe!

The hotel's public areas are quite good, much better than Parkroyal. It felt very clean walking around inside, especially compared to the dusty streets outside, it was definitely a pleasant contrast. However, by the time I arrived to check in, it was already 3:40 PM. After completing the check-in process, the South Asian front desk attendant said there were no rooms available and I'd have to wait. When I asked how long, he couldn't give a clear answer, and when I asked if it could be done within half an hour, he still said he wasn't sure. I pointed out that the check-in time was 3 PM and not having a room was unreasonable. There was no apology or offer of compensation either. They just directed me to the lounge, where there were some small pastries and desserts (very limited selection), and they didn't even pour a glass of water. My flight was delayed by an hour, and then the Grab ride took another five or six hours, so I was extremely tired. Not being able to check in was really infuriating. While walking around the public area, I suddenly thought of contacting the platform's customer service. The customer service representative understood the situation and immediately helped resolve it. Less than two minutes after I returned to the lounge from contacting customer service, the front desk informed me that a room was available. Thank you, Trip.com customer service representative! Still, I'm quite speechless about the hotel's conduct. Moreover, when we entered, there was another pair of Chinese ladies waiting there, and when we left, it seemed they still hadn't been attended to. (I wonder if it's just a coincidence that only Chinese guests were made to wait, or if it was intentional.)

There has been progress and setbacks compared to the last time we came here. The progress is that the carpet has been replaced with a floor. The setback is that the room was not cleaned very sloppily. There is dust on the table and the bathroom leak has not been cleaned. There are hairs from the previous guest. Used soap and shampoo. The sheets are shabby, but if you don't mind sleeping for one night, it's okay. There is a water heater in the bathroom. We booked a family room with three single beds. See the photo for the buffet breakfast. After all, the price cannot be too high. The scenery of the back mountain is still beautiful, but I just happened to meet the boss Bai Tiangong, who was holding a private party in the evening... We were looked down upon when we joined as guests, so we went back to the room and closed the door to sleep, but the tenor was still singing, I finally fell asleep while the firecrackers were blasting😅... Penang Hill is getting more and more beautiful. Generally speaking, it’s not a worthwhile trip once in a year or two.

As a frequent traveler, I found Hotel Grand Swiss on Lebuh Chulia to be a fantastic budget option that hits the sweet spot for value. It's noticeably cheaper than most neighboring hotels, making it a steal for the location. Being on one of George Town’s liveliest streets, I was worried about noise, but the room was surprisingly quiet and provided a peaceful night’s sleep. The single room is compact—don't expect room to stretch out—but it is perfectly sized for a solo traveler who just needs a clean, functional base. The décor is definitely on the basic, dated side, but given the price and comfort, it's a trade-off I’d gladly make. Highly recommended for solo independent travelers.

The house has an old-fashioned style. We stayed in a loft, and I initially thought it had two large beds. Luckily, there were only two of us, so sleeping downstairs was fine. The self check-in was very convenient, with no deposit required, and the check-in process was sent via email, which was also easy. The only downside was the mosquitoes on the second night; there wasn't a single mosquito lamp in the entire room... I barely slept at all and eventually had to contact the host. Otherwise, the room was acceptable.

16/9 It was my very last minute for this short trip. It was a brand new hotel everything was well maintained and the hotel link to the mall. A few days before you will received a confirmation email from the hotel itself for you to filled up your detail and your preferred checking timing so hotel can do some preparation and you may do any special requests needed. The Lobby was located at level 7 and i reached there around 11.55pm and surprisingly they allowed me to do early check in from the original timing stated. The front desk was so friendly (Chris) and she did her brief and explained to me the hotel facilities all and basically the staff start from the level 1 arrival lobby till to the house skipping was so polite and this hotel provided free carpark unlimited in and out which is great for those who’s driving and preferre neighbourhood hotel. The hotel lobby at level 7 is unblocked view which is u can see view ofbukit hijau and part of air hitam which is so calm for me. That’s a hotel facilities at level 10 ( pool and gym ) and that a small surau provided as well which is i don’t remember which level. Once check in i went up to my room level they has playing music along the corridor at least i dont feel so quiet walking to my room. The room that i book is twin bed, the room look so spacious and very hard to find spacious room now days in a brand new building. The room was neat brighter and looks fresh and the part that i really like is the HYRDO brand shampoo and body foam the remind me of OCEAN soap from bath and body. On the next day i went down the breakfast ( starts from 6.30-10.30am) once im there thats only 3-5 guess for breakfast. The morning view was stunning i stay there till 10.30am enjoy my morning breakfast calmly. the staff who on duty was so aware with the surroundings on guests needs. After breakfast end i managed to look at their infinity pool and gym at level 10 there was nobody but everything was neat and tidy. And around 11.50am it’s time for me to check out everything went smoothly. Until around 1pm i realised that i left 1 of my stuff in the room. I did called your front desk to check and they told me that housekeeping has inform that’s a lost and found which is my stuff. So far im having a good experience in Harris Hotel Penang . Thank you for the great hospitality while i stay there. And for sure i look forward to be there again in future 🧡

I have stayed at this hotel several times, and I have enjoyed every visit, including my most recent stay with my baby boy to celebrate my birthday. The hotel staff and housekeeping are friendly, responsive, and provide excellent hospitality, making every stay comfortable and memorable. The hotel is also baby-friendly, which made traveling with our infant much easier and more enjoyable. Its location in the heart of Penang town is another great advantage, as it is convenient to explore the city on foot and experience the local attractions, food, and culture. In addition, it is very easy to get around by Grab, with reasonable fares to most places of interest. Overall, I had another wonderful stay and would definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Penang.

The hotel is contemporary with Noyanya design. The staff is friendly, the guard is helpful. The breakfast is varied western and Asian cuisine. We always stay this hotel whenever we visit Penang. It’s our favourite hotel.

The location is very strategic, with many food options around the hotel. The staff are quick to answer questions. The room is spacious, clean, and smells good. The bathroom is also spacious and clean, but the floor gets slippery after showering because the partition between the shower and the sink is small, causing water to splash onto the front floor. The view from the room window faces the city and the sea, which is very pleasant for sitting and enjoying the surroundings. On weekends, there's a long wait for the elevator because the hotel is very busy. The hotel is highly recommended! 👌👍

I really loved it! The rooms are bright and spacious, the towels are good and new, and everything is perfectly clean. The location is on a quiet street but close to cafes and lively areas. There's a great, large kitchen on the ground floor. They even offered small breakfasts, like toast with butter, jam, tea, and coffee. There's a washing machine available for common use, and even free detergent. Everything is very convenient. It's a 30-minute walk to the Old Town, or you can take a very cheap taxi for only 6-8 Malaysian Ringgits. As for cons: there are no European power outlets, so you'll need to bring your own. But that's a minor detail, as they're sold nearby in a store. And you'll need them not just here! 😁

The location is great, you are walking distance from good foodie locations. No need to rely on grab or taxis from here. The people who work at the hotel are really friendly and helpful. Explaining everything well. The bathroom we had had a really slow draining shower. We had to take less than 3 minute showers to prevent flooding in the bathroom as the shower was elevated higher than the room but it tilted towards the room. When we arrived it was later than the suggested checking in time however our room was not yet ready. However it was only a ten minute wait and the staff gave us a drink and a biscuit while we waited. When checking out, we had to leave early in the morning to catch a flight and the front desk was unmanned. The hotel could benefit from a safe check out box because we just had to leave the key sitting on the desk and hope that the staff got it when they arrived rather than any other people. Overall, a good stay, I recommend it for a quick visit to Penang.

Excellent resort and service overall, but beware of the concierge's personal tours!: overall, our stay at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang was top-notch. The rooms, amenities, location, and staff service were all A+ grade. Hilton maintains its high standards, and we were thoroughly enjoying our trip—until we interacted with the concierge service. Unfortunately, the concierge technically misled us into taking a personal/private trip. It ended up costing us a huge amount of extra money in damages/demurrage, which felt like a personal scam/cheating. It was completely unprofessional and left a very bitter taste on an otherwise perfect vacation. The Hilton management seriously needs to monitor and be extremely cautious about their concierge team's activities and recommendations. Guests should be very careful when taking tour advice or booking transport/trips directly through the concierge here. Aside from this concierge incident, everything else at the hotel was excellent. But because of this issue, I urge both future guests and management to stay vigilant.

Overall we are satisfied with this hotel but there are one thing I want to highlight. After check out the lady whom I liased with when I checked in told me that there are a burn mark on the bedsheet & also mattress protector and she will forfeit my deposit of RM50. I then asked my niece who slept on that bed & she said the burn mark was initially there but she doesn’t know that she must inform us about it. I’ve tried to explained to her many times that my 11 years old niece was sleeping on that bed & none of us in that room smoke or using any electrical appliances such as hair iron or curling iron or which non of us have with us so how can we the burn mark appeared there. She kept insisting that it was a fresh burn mark and she won’t let her hotel guests sleep with a burn mark bedsheet. This is totally a scam to us as I travel with my mum, my husband, niece (11 years old) & nephew (10 years old) could caused the damage as claimed. I do not have choices but just accept it as the lady keep saying that my deposit is not even enough to cover. Am not sure why they used such a tactic towards a family with kids and I have never had this problem in my entire booking with Trip.com. It was our mistake that we didn’t check the hotel room condition as we checked in very late - 8:26pm and all of us are really tired from travelling long journey. I’d say it was caused by their own staff which are 2 Bangladeshi guys who handle housekeeping but they blamed it on my family. Of course they won’t admit it as the lady keep saying they won’t provide burn bedsheet. This is totally not fair to me and one of the staff keep insisting me to pay the deposit when I arrived.
