Penang Hill Hike: A Complete Guide to the Best Trails and Attractions

I’ve always enjoyed nature and hiking, so Penang Hill (or Bukit Bendera) is one of my favourite spots in Penang. It’s basically the highest point on the island, and the view up there is honestly super worth it! City on one side, lush rainforest on the other. There are a few hiking trails you can take depending on your mood and fitness level. I’ve tried the easier Heritage Trail before, which follows the same route as the funicular train, and also heard about the Moon Gate Trail if you want something more challenging with nicer jungle views and stop points along the way.

In this guide, I’ll share how I usually get there, which trail I think is best for different types of hikers, and what you can expect along the way. I’ll also cover what to do once you reach the top😁 There are actually quite a few attractions and spots to chill.

⛰️ How to Get to Penang Hill?

Penang Hill is actually quite near Georgetown, just about 6 km away. Getting there is pretty easy, and I’ve tried a few different ways depending on how lazy or how adventurous I feel 😄

🚠 By Funicular Train

Honestly, this is the easiest and most popular way. I usually just go to the Lower Station at Air Itam, then take the funicular train straight up. The ride only takes around 10 minutes, but the views along the way are quite nice. It runs daily from morning till night, and during peak hours the train comes quite frequently, so you won’t wait too long. You can buy tickets online or at the counter, and there’s even a fast lane option if you don’t want to queue.

🚌 By Bus

If you want something cheaper, I’ve also taken Bus 204 from Komtar before. It goes all the way to Air Itam Market, which is near the Lower Station. It’s super budget-friendly (only a few ringgit), just a bit slower and depends on traffic. You can pay cash or use Touch ‘n Go.

🚗 By Grab / Taxi

This is my “comfort mode” 😆 Just book a Grab from Georgetown and you’ll reach in around 15–20 minutes. Not too expensive if you split with friends, and very convenient.

🏍️ By Car / Motorbike

If you’re driving yourself, you can also go up easily using Waze or Google Maps. There’s parking near the Lower Station, but do expect to pay a small hourly fee.

Everything was sufficient and comfortable. The house was beautiful, neat, and clean. The fridge was fully stocked with ice, and the washing machine even came with detergent. There was a garment steamer and plenty of hangers. An extra mattress was provided, and the bedroom was set up like a hotel. The Smart TV had games. Even the smallest details were taken care of: AAA batteries for the remote, a bucket, a water filter for hot and warm water, and enough clothes hangers. A clothes drying rack was also provided, along with extension plugs at every bed. The WiFi was fast, the fan wasn't noisy, and the air conditioning was cold. The water heater also worked perfectly. Just a minor setback: the mailboxes weren't arranged in numerical order, making it difficult to find ours (not the host's fault). The microwave also wasn't working, which the host might not have noticed.

It was an easy and convenient base to explore Penang as there are several malls and food centres nearby, as well as all that Georgetown has to offer. I stayed in the 8-bed female dormitory and had a very pleasant experience overall. The room was very clean, and the blanket was soft and smelled fresh. Each bed had its own power outlet and reading light, which was very convenient. The bathroom was decent and well-maintained, with a hair dryer provided. I also appreciated that soap, shampoo, and facial cleanser were available, and the quality of the products was quite good. Slippers were provided as well. The pantry area was a nice bonus, with complimentary drinking water, tea, coffee, and a microwave for guests to use. Although this property uses a self check-in system, the staff were very responsive and always replied quickly to messages whenever I had questions. When I stayed, all 8 beds in the room were occupied, but everyone was very respectful and considerate of others. The room remained quiet, and I had no issues with noise from other guests. The only small downside was that there are restaurants and bars around the hotel, so music can be heard from outside, especially in the evening. However, I'm not particularly sensitive to noise, so I still slept comfortably throughout the night. The location is easy to find and convenient to access. Overall, I think this is a great option if you're looking for a clean, comfortable, and budget-friendly place to stay. Good value for money, and I would happily stay here again. Rating: 8/10 💖

Great location, with lots of cafes and restaurants nearby, and close to the main historical sites. It's a cozy hotel, and the family room was spacious. Everything we needed was in the room (fridge, two AC units, hot water, mugs). On the downside, the room wasn't cleaned once during our 5-day stay. Also, the soundproofing was poor (though it didn't bother us much, it might be an issue for older guests). The door lock was a bit tricky to open.

I have stayed at this hotel several times, and I have enjoyed every visit, including my most recent stay with my baby boy to celebrate my birthday. The hotel staff and housekeeping are friendly, responsive, and provide excellent hospitality, making every stay comfortable and memorable. The hotel is also baby-friendly, which made traveling with our infant much easier and more enjoyable. Its location in the heart of Penang town is another great advantage, as it is convenient to explore the city on foot and experience the local attractions, food, and culture. In addition, it is very easy to get around by Grab, with reasonable fares to most places of interest. Overall, I had another wonderful stay and would definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Penang.

Compatriots, I do not recommend this hotel. Either stay in George Town, or head directly to hotels in the main beach area further down. This hotel is in an inconvenient location, far from everything and not lively. There's a mart opposite, but crossing the road is terrifying! What's worse is that the entire hotel has no concept of service, or perhaps, all of Malaysia doesn't. Yet, the price is comparable to established five-star hotels in George Town. This hotel is incredibly stingy; bottled water isn't provided. You have to go to the hallway yourself to get their glass bottled water. The water flow is incredibly slow. After finishing the water on the first day, housekeeping doesn't refill it on the second. Both toilet paper and tissues in the bathroom are stingily rationed. Unlike back home where they are generously replenished. The so-called hotel beach is a dirty, messy area with no proper beach chairs or anything. This hotel is not suitable for people from our country! The lobby has an overwhelming, strong, unpleasant fragrance.

It's so wonderful place. Very clean room, very quiet street. Good for short term and long term. Room seemed renewed, good looking. The kitchen is available in common area, free fresh water. Breakfast is very simple, for couple days it is okay but you will get bored of bread and jam. Bathroom looks fragile in your room, you don't have privacy for toilet if you need it. Yes, you can hear some noises from common area but it wasn't a big deal for me. Maybe I had good neighbours. It's 2-story building thats why they don't have pretty view. AC also works very well. They provide all instructions for self checking in and answer quickly to your questions. And there's no microwave, warm your food in 7/11 or on the electric stove in the kitchen. 20 min walk to historical district and the Top building. And do not forget that they have pool table on roof area. It would be charming to spend evening time here! I spent 3 cool days in Penang thanks to this place 😊

The location is great, you are walking distance from good foodie locations. No need to rely on grab or taxis from here. The people who work at the hotel are really friendly and helpful. Explaining everything well. The bathroom we had had a really slow draining shower. We had to take less than 3 minute showers to prevent flooding in the bathroom as the shower was elevated higher than the room but it tilted towards the room. When we arrived it was later than the suggested checking in time however our room was not yet ready. However it was only a ten minute wait and the staff gave us a drink and a biscuit while we waited. When checking out, we had to leave early in the morning to catch a flight and the front desk was unmanned. The hotel could benefit from a safe check out box because we just had to leave the key sitting on the desk and hope that the staff got it when they arrived rather than any other people. Overall, a good stay, I recommend it for a quick visit to Penang.

Check-in was convenient and quick, and the staff's attitude was excellent. They replace the towels daily and provide a bottle of water. The quadruple room was spacious enough. The air conditioning was very strong, and there were two power outlets and two USB ports. Each bed also came with a fan and a privacy curtain. The hot water in the bathroom was incredibly plentiful – I was so satisfied! There's a pool that's perfect for photos, I loved it!

I had planned to spend a wonderful birthday here, but the hotel experience was quite disappointing. First, the room was extremely damp. My swimwear, which I washed after swimming the day before, was still not dry by the next day. I recommend hanging it on the balcony chairs to dry. Second, the room was old and rundown, filled with a musty smell. The bathroom was cramped with old facilities, and the bathroom door was noticeably dirty, which was very unpleasant. Third, there are no convenience stores nearby, making it quite inconvenient to get around. The only commendable aspects were the overall above-average breakfast with a wide variety of choices (you can ask the waitstaff to make pulled tea) and the ample parking spaces. However, do note that the parking lot is quite narrow. These were the only two satisfactory points. I do not recommend this hotel.

Hygiene: Clean and meets star-rated standards. Environment: The hotel itself is great, with a gym and a courtyard with a pool. I stayed in the Garden Wing, which only has a rocky beach facing it. The sandy beach is on the Rasa Wing side. You can no longer walk directly along the beach to Batu Ferringhi Beach; you have to walk out and take a main road for a bit. The surrounding area feels a bit desolate; there are very few air-conditioned dining options. It's better to take a taxi when going out. Service: The service was truly mediocre, even poor. There was a QR code at the reception desk for Chinese customer service. After I added it, I realized they only speak Chinese. I asked the customer service to help me inquire if my room had been cleaned and if my booked room type issue had been resolved. The WeChat customer service just told me to ask the front desk. I told him I had already asked the front desk, and he just told me to dial 0 for the front desk. In short, I couldn't get any answers, which was quite unsatisfactory. However, I was quite pleased with the anniversary gift. Facilities: Thumbs up for the breakfast, it was excellent, truly superb.

Check-in 21/3 Check-out 24/3 I have been staying at this hotel since year 2000. This time around I really frustrated. We were assigned at unit no.85. The air-conditioner were not fully working. We have to clean the filters ourselves. Imagine a paying guest got to do these (refer the enclosed photos). Then still the same. A Bangladeshi so call the technician claimed that only when there is a complaint he will check, no periodic maintenance, just imagine! Next day we were assigned unit no.87, still the same. So we decided to shorten our stay & leave the hotel on 23/3. Then this Bangladeshi admitted that the owner/management had received lots of complaint from the guest about the room air-conditioner. Nevertheless I must praised Mr Naim & Ms Ayu whom had attended to these issues. They did their very best but it looks like the owner couldn’t be bother. Penaga used to be the best hotel but now no wonder the rating went down. Question here who is going to compensate our losses? Will Trip.com compensate? We paid but we get these rubbish. All I can say stay away from this hotel until they improve it.

I deliberated for a long time before choosing this hotel, but I love old architecture too much, so I decided to stay. I even paid extra to upgrade to a room with a balcony. Now, let me list the serious downsides: 1. There was still a very strong paint smell. 2. The service speed, typical of Southeast Asia, was slow. 3. The pool was dirty with bugs and fallen leaves; I wouldn't dare get in. 4. One evening, the pump for the shower gel wouldn't push down or pull off, so I had to ask the front desk for help. They sent two Indian male security guards to try and fix it for me 😅. 5. On the last day, we returned to find the cleaning staff had left a rag in our room. 6. The hotel room description said it came with a coffee machine, but there wasn't one at all. 7. Even after cleaning, there was still a lot of hair on the floor.

This hotel is a very old room reform It's not really good. The sound of cooking downstairs at night It's like frying at your bedside. I didn’t sleep all night!! The accommodation experience was very poor and lightning protection was strong. At night, there was a continuous stir-fry sound downstairs. The movement was particularly large. Overall we are satisfied with this hotel but there are one thing I want to highlight. After check out the lady whom I liased with when I checked in told me that there are a burn mark on the bedsheet & also mattress protector and she will forfeit my deposit of RM50. I then asked my niece who slept on that bed & she said the burn mark was initially there but she doesn’t know that she must inform us about it. I’ve tried to explained to her many times that my 11 years old niece was sleeping on that bed & none of us in that room smoke or using any electrical appliances such as hair iron or curling iron or which non of us have with us so how can we the burn mark appeared there. She kept insisting that it was a fresh burn mark and she won’t let her hotel guests sleep with a burn mark bedsheet. This is totally a scam to us as I travel with my mum, my husband, niece (11 years old) & nephew (10 years old) could caused the damage as claimed. I do not have choices but just accept it as the lady keep saying that my deposit is not even enough to cover. Am not sure why they used such a tactic towards a family with kids and I have never had this problem in my entire booking with Trip.com. It was our mistake that we didn’t check the hotel room condition as we checked in very late - 8:26pm and all of us are really tired from travelling long journey. I’d say it was caused by their own staff which are 2 Bangladeshi guys who handle housekeeping but they blamed it on my family. Of course they won’t admit it as the lady keep saying they won’t provide burn bedsheet. This is totally not fair to me and one of the staff keep insisting me to pay the deposit when I arrived.

Rating: 3/5 My stay at U Hotel this time was acceptable and noticeably better than my previous visit. The room appeared to be better maintained, especially the air conditioner, which seemed to have been recently serviced. The room was able to get properly cold, unlike my earlier stay where even setting the temperature to 16°C still felt warm. The room was equipped with a small Mi TV, which was adequate for basic viewing. The hotel’s location is also quite convenient, with easy access to nearby shops and surrounding areas. Another improvement compared to my previous stay was that there were no sudden alarm sounds outside the room, which had been quite disruptive before. Overall, while the experience was not exceptional, it was satisfactory and more comfortable than my earlier stay.
