Penang Hill Hike: A Complete Guide to the Best Trails and Attractions

I’ve always enjoyed nature and hiking, so Penang Hill (or Bukit Bendera) is one of my favourite spots in Penang. It’s basically the highest point on the island, and the view up there is honestly super worth it! City on one side, lush rainforest on the other. There are a few hiking trails you can take depending on your mood and fitness level. I’ve tried the easier Heritage Trail before, which follows the same route as the funicular train, and also heard about the Moon Gate Trail if you want something more challenging with nicer jungle views and stop points along the way.

In this guide, I’ll share how I usually get there, which trail I think is best for different types of hikers, and what you can expect along the way. I’ll also cover what to do once you reach the top😁 There are actually quite a few attractions and spots to chill.

⛰️ How to Get to Penang Hill?

Penang Hill is actually quite near Georgetown, just about 6 km away. Getting there is pretty easy, and I’ve tried a few different ways depending on how lazy or how adventurous I feel 😄

🚠 By Funicular Train

Honestly, this is the easiest and most popular way. I usually just go to the Lower Station at Air Itam, then take the funicular train straight up. The ride only takes around 10 minutes, but the views along the way are quite nice. It runs daily from morning till night, and during peak hours the train comes quite frequently, so you won’t wait too long. You can buy tickets online or at the counter, and there’s even a fast lane option if you don’t want to queue.

🚌 By Bus

If you want something cheaper, I’ve also taken Bus 204 from Komtar before. It goes all the way to Air Itam Market, which is near the Lower Station. It’s super budget-friendly (only a few ringgit), just a bit slower and depends on traffic. You can pay cash or use Touch ‘n Go.

🚗 By Grab / Taxi

This is my “comfort mode” 😆 Just book a Grab from Georgetown and you’ll reach in around 15–20 minutes. Not too expensive if you split with friends, and very convenient.

🏍️ By Car / Motorbike

If you’re driving yourself, you can also go up easily using Waze or Google Maps. There’s parking near the Lower Station, but do expect to pay a small hourly fee.

Unlike large chains like Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt, Soori stands out as a much rarer independent luxury boutique brand. Soori Penang was meticulously restored from several 19th-century historical shophouses, emphasizing a blend of 'heritage × contemporary luxury.' The room layouts divide the living room, bedroom, and bathroom into three separate, distinct spaces. Everything was fine except the parking charges, which were completely mishandled. I was clearly told it would be RM9 per day with multiple entries and exits allowed. Yet on the second day, I was charged RM18 on my first exit. Naturally, I assumed it might include an advance charge for the third day.. but then on the third day, I was charged another RM9 anyway. That makes absolutely no sense. I raised this at reception during check-out, and I was told to text a provided number. I’ve sent multiple messages and no response whatsoever. Completely ignored. Yes, it’s “just” RM9 extra. But that’s not the point. If this is how casually you handle even small discrepancies, what does that say about your overall standards? And how many other guests are being overcharged without even realizing it? Frankly, this is unacceptable and extremely disappointing.

Everything was sufficient and comfortable. The house was beautiful, neat, and clean. The fridge was fully stocked with ice, and the washing machine even came with detergent. There was a garment steamer and plenty of hangers. An extra mattress was provided, and the bedroom was set up like a hotel. The Smart TV had games. Even the smallest details were taken care of: AAA batteries for the remote, a bucket, a water filter for hot and warm water, and enough clothes hangers. A clothes drying rack was also provided, along with extension plugs at every bed. The WiFi was fast, the fan wasn't noisy, and the air conditioning was cold. The water heater also worked perfectly. Just a minor setback: the mailboxes weren't arranged in numerical order, making it difficult to find ours (not the host's fault). The microwave also wasn't working, which the host might not have noticed.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this 2 bedroom apartment. We loved that there were 2 full bathrooms with showers and spacious for our family of 4. It was an easy and convenient base to explore Penang as there are several malls and food centres nearby, as well as all that Georgetown has to offer. The host was easy to contact and very accommodating in meeting our needs and requests.

The cleanliness can be improved. There is a lot of dust found on the walls and mould could be found in the bathroom. There was first a lot of dust or lint on the blanket covered when I got the room and asked for change. The cleaning staff became grumpy but ended up changed that after I insisted. Later I found that the room has no window while my booking should be with window. I was finally changed to a window room with the help from the trip.com staff. Although the window could not be opened, it has some sunlight in. The upside is the location is indeed great, and the staff at the hotel are generally nice and kind, except the grumpy one I met who also became softer later. If not the staff are generally nice and kind, I would have changed to another hotel.

The whole feeling is like a Taiwanese, but he is a native of Malayan. He is very polite and enthusiastic. There is a free map at the door. He introduces him. George Dock is very detailed and intimate and will help you mark it. It's a little over ten minutes' walk to Shantou Street, nestled in a quiet, busy area. The hotel is clean and comfortable, and the staff are friendly. The bedding in the room was spotless, and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious. The price is a real bargain, and I'll definitely be back next time.

This charming bungalow sits on 10,000 sq feet of land, 40 minutes from the airport, 15 minutes to Gurney Drive, 10 mins to beautiful beaches of Batu Ferringhi, 20 mins to Georgetown UNESCO Heritage site, 25 mins to Escape Theme Park and Entopia Butterfly Farm.The house has a dry kitchen and a wet kitchen. Cooking utensils, plates, bowls and cutleries are provided.The house also has other facilities like a fridge, washing machine, microwave oven, electric oven etc.Also ideal for small family parties, it is a residential area so the noise level will have to be kept to the lowest possible.

I stayed in the 8-bed female dormitory and had a very pleasant experience overall. The room was very clean, and the blanket was soft and smelled fresh. Each bed had its own power outlet and reading light, which was very convenient. The bathroom was decent and well-maintained, with a hair dryer provided. I also appreciated that soap, shampoo, and facial cleanser were available, and the quality of the products was quite good. Slippers were provided as well. The pantry area was a nice bonus, with complimentary drinking water, tea, coffee, and a microwave for guests to use. Although this property uses a self check-in system, the staff were very responsive and always replied quickly to messages whenever I had questions. When I stayed, all 8 beds in the room were occupied, but everyone was very respectful and considerate of others. The room remained quiet, and I had no issues with noise from other guests. The only small downside was that there are restaurants and bars around the hotel, so music can be heard from outside, especially in the evening. However, I'm not particularly sensitive to noise, so I still slept comfortably throughout the night. The location is easy to find and convenient to access. Overall, I think this is a great option if you're looking for a clean, comfortable, and budget-friendly place to stay. Good value for money, and I would happily stay here again. Rating: 8/10 💖

The facilities felt a bit retro, and there's no elevator, so we had to carry our luggage up ourselves. However, the hygiene and bedding were very clean and comfortable. Staying at Gurney was incredibly quiet (my parents said they heard prayer calls in the morning which startled them a bit, but I didn't hear anything, haha). The water pressure in the bathroom was a bit low, and the attic really just fit one bed. But overall, it's excellent value for money. 😊😊 When we went to Batu Ferringhi, we couldn't get a taxi back at night, and the host helped us figure out many solutions. We're so grateful! 🥺🥺 It's very close to the Green House Prawn Mee! You can definitely check it out while you're there. 😋

This stay was absolutely fantastic! I definitely have to give it a five-star rating. The hotel's location is super convenient, with a 7-Eleven right downstairs and plenty of food options nearby. The room was spotless, and the bedding was soft and comfortable, ensuring I had a great night's sleep. I especially want to commend the service; everyone from the front desk to the housekeeping staff was incredibly friendly and responsive. Next time I'm in Penang, I'll definitely stay here again! Highly recommend it to everyone!

A nice, fairly new hotel. The Family Room (1 king, 1 single) was quite large and nice. Beds were really comfortable with high, firm pillows.Single bed was in a corner by itself. Had a sofa, table and chair as well, with a long open cupboard. Had a good view of the sea and a bit of the pool. Balcony was nice, but didn't have anything eg chair + table. Bathroom was spacious with the usual amenities. My main issue is that nearly all the lights are controlled by one switch, so quite inconvenient when everybody sleeps at a different time. Breakfast buffet was ok only, but lovely seaview. Location is about 25 minutes' drive from Georgetown.

Booking write 9 pax there are 2 futon beds in the living room but xde. Deposit pay 150. Bed sheet at the checkout time said it was dirty so for king 60 and queen bed sheet 45 have to be paid. So for those who stay here when checking in, check the bed sheet when you want to be clean or not. The room is beautiful and the view is beautiful.

Staffs are friendly and welcoming. Good location near KOMTAR, Prangin Mall & 1st Avenue Mall. Has a Coway water filter near the Reception area, so hot drinking water is readily available. The hotel provides complimentary water bottles as well for the room. Water pressure of the shower is good. Toiletries such as shampoo, shower gel & shower cap is provided. Coffee and tea sachets are provided too. CarPark is available although it’s privately owned and have to pay for parking. Bed sheets are thin, just bearable for a few nights stay. The safe deposit box in the room doesn’t work though. Strongly recommend that the hotel look into pest control as we found a few small cockroaches at the washroom, the toilet seat, the mini kettle area on the table, and also at the corners of the room in the floor. Overall happy with the hotel location, amenities and staff helpfulness; although improvement on cleanliness would be great!

I really loved it! The rooms are bright and spacious, the towels are good and new, and everything is perfectly clean. The location is on a quiet street but close to cafes and lively areas. There's a great, large kitchen on the ground floor. They even offered small breakfasts, like toast with butter, jam, tea, and coffee. There's a washing machine available for common use, and even free detergent. Everything is very convenient. It's a 30-minute walk to the Old Town, or you can take a very cheap taxi for only 6-8 Malaysian Ringgits. As for cons: there are no European power outlets, so you'll need to bring your own. But that's a minor detail, as they're sold nearby in a store. And you'll need them not just here! 😁

I went with my mum to Penang and stayed at Macalister Terraces Hotel, so I decided to stay here due to its location. Great choice! The push cart chee cheong fun which is about 3 mins walk is great. Also easily accessible is new lane and the area with the famous chendol. As for the hotel itself, Liza really made the stay so much more pleasant. The room size is great for 2 people. However, I mentioned to the male manager on duty about the leaky water kettle when we boil water. To our dismay, he didn't do anything about it. Oh yes, I mentioned it was to celebrate my mum's birthday. In the earlier conversation, they mentioned that it would include a swan hotel, but they did not do it.

Perfect for a trip to Penang with friends! This location is so peaceful, and I had a very comfortable stay these past two days. As soon as you step out, you're right in the Heritage Town Area. If you're coming by ferry from Butterworth, it's only about a ten-minute walk, which is incredibly convenient.

This is the best value backpacker hostel in Penang, and it even has a swimming pool! It's my top choice in Penang, especially since it's located in the heritage area of the city, making it super convenient to get around. There are also plenty of restaurants nearby. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, providing a relaxing environment after a long day. Housekeeping did a good job, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel felt calm and welcoming. Superb location, close to so many well known eateries. Rapid bus is at hostel doorstep to commute to various places of interests. Capsule bed is enclosed by concrete wall and you wouldn't hear movements on the top bed. Air conditioning and hot showers are strong. There are many lounges to rest and relax and love the Peranakan ambience of the hostel. Staff are nice and helpful and love that the towels are of the reputable hotel quality and are changed once every 2 days. A bottle of drinking water given everyday by the housekeeper. The staff were courteous and professional, and check-in and check-out were smooth. Amenities were adequate and met expectations for a comfortable stay. The centerpiece of this hotel is a square Zen garden, with a rectangular open sky roof that lets rain in to nourish the plants indoors. This very much adds to the relaxing ambience of the place. One of the best places to hang out at this sizeable hotel is at the commons, where there are comfy leather couches, a TV, a fridge, a water dispenser, an ironing board and also worth mentioning a bookshelf filled with books and board games. It is open for all registered hotel guests to use, and is nicely equipped and furnished. Working shower with heater. Also, clean toilet. I recommended place to stay for solo travelers or with friends. I liked this hotel very much. If you stay for three days, the hotel provides laundry service. I would happily stay again Overall, it was a excellent experience, and I would consider staying here again in the future.

The cleanliness of the room is really good! It is recommended that the chairs and environment be cleaned! The water will be blocked when taking a shower, and the door on the first floor of the room cannot be locked. Did you respond to the landlord? As for after booking a room, it is recommended to send complete information on how to check in! Because you have to contact the landlord first when you arrive at the site. Apart from these problems, it’s basically okay.

t he hotel is newly opened, the total floor is 27 but they are only ready at level 19. the hotel is not really ready for operations as some of the maintenance works still carry out at night, loud noise and bang during night time which is so unacceptable. even they swap the room but the loud noise still persists. if you're a light sleeper, not recommended for now.

”Overall, we had a wonderful stay. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly and attentive, and the facilities were excellent. The breakfast offered a great variety of local and international dishes. However, the fried carrot cake and loh shu fun were slightly overcooked during our visit. Other than that, the food was enjoyable, and we had a fantastic experience. We would happily stay here again.

Had a fantastic stay! The room was spacious and very comfortable. The free parking was a huge bonus. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Unlike other hotels that offer a welcome drink, Sho Hotel provides a complimentary coffee/tea/orange juice every single day. If you stay for several days, you get several drinks – it's such a thoughtful touch! I'd redeem mine every morning before heading out, and the staff would put it in a to-go cup for me to take with me. Absolutely delightful! ❤️ Sho Hotel will definitely be my first choice next time I visit Penang!

Pros: Although the decor is a bit dated, the overall service and facilities are still up to par. The rooms in RaSa Wing are generally spacious, with a separate walk-in closet, and a large living room. The TV on the desk can be pulled out and rotated. There are also daily welcome snacks (dried fruits). For breakfast, you can choose the mainstream buffet at Garden Wing, or for a more unique experience, order à la carte at the RaSa restaurant on the second floor – their Hokkien Mee and Curry Mee are very authentic! The overall service level is also on point; you can take a shuttle from the concierge at the entrance to Golden Sands' swimming pool, and the staff are very friendly and greet you warmly. The overall facilities and service meet Shangri-La standards. Cons: 1. The parent-child facilities are not extensive enough, not as good as many domestic hotels: Basically, only the pool is available for play. Even at Golden Sands' water park, there's only one small slide, and there's always a queue, so it's not particularly impressive. There is a kids' club, but it requires an extra fee (though not expensive). Other parent-child activities are limited and not available daily, and it feels like we didn't receive schedule notifications on the RaSa Wing side. The parent-child experience is a minus. 2. The Concierge informed me that RaSa Wing guests could order free soft drinks at the pool bar (including Golden Sands), but when I actually went to Golden Sands, I was told that RaSa Wing guests couldn't enjoy this benefit there. 3. The food options provided during Happy Hour are more Western-oriented, with very few Chinese dishes, and the taste is mediocre. It's fine to try it once on the first day, but don't have high expectations. 4. The beach has been eroded, which is a major drawback for a beachfront hotel to not have a beach. Suggestions: You can walk to Batu Ferringhi beach; taking a taxi might get stuck in traffic. I don't recommend the durian stall at the RaSa Wing hotel entrance; instead, go to the durian stall at the Golden Sands entrance (only available at night), the quality is much better!

New from Ascot group. Took over a UNESO Heritage building where I guess the structure can't be demolished or hack which makes the rooms small. For the price I pay for the garden patio, it is not worth the price. There are many properties surrounding that matches this price. For example G Hotel Kelawi or Prestige Hotel. Location is good no doubt but wanted to emphasise on the car park that is located left side of the building which no access to the rooms directly where you need to walk back out to the lobby to enter your rooms. Lobby main door entrance doesn't have any luggage friendly ramp to push up to the lobby. Something the property needs to consider as well as for wheel chair. Also, I had 2 crickets visiting my room when I was showering. LOL. Overall, the property is new, nice deco and good location. Just few suggestions above for the property to take into consideration.

This hotel is a very old room reform It's not really good. The sound of cooking downstairs at night It's like frying at your bedside. I didn’t sleep all night!! The accommodation experience was very poor and lightning protection was strong. At night, there was a continuous stir-fry sound downstairs. The movement was particularly large. The room was not soundproof at all. From the night to the late night, the whole night was disturbed and could not sleep. I couldn't even spend the money on the basic quiet rest, very disappointed.

Overall we are satisfied with this hotel but there are one thing I want to highlight. After check out the lady whom I liased with when I checked in told me that there are a burn mark on the bedsheet & also mattress protector and she will forfeit my deposit of RM50. I then asked my niece who slept on that bed & she said the burn mark was initially there but she doesn’t know that she must inform us about it. I’ve tried to explained to her many times that my 11 years old niece was sleeping on that bed & none of us in that room smoke or using any electrical appliances such as hair iron or curling iron or which non of us have with us so how can we the burn mark appeared there. She kept insisting that it was a fresh burn mark and she won’t let her hotel guests sleep with a burn mark bedsheet. This is totally a scam to us as I travel with my mum, my husband, niece (11 years old) & nephew (10 years old) could caused the damage as claimed. I do not have choices but just accept it as the lady keep saying that my deposit is not even enough to cover. Am not sure why they used such a tactic towards a family with kids and I have never had this problem in my entire booking with Trip.com. It was our mistake that we didn’t check the hotel room condition as we checked in very late - 8:26pm and all of us are really tired from travelling long journey. I’d say it was caused by their own staff which are 2 Bangladeshi guys who handle housekeeping but they blamed it on my family. Of course they won’t admit it as the lady keep saying they won’t provide burn bedsheet. This is totally not fair to me and one of the staff keep insisting me to pay the deposit when I arrived.
