Tanjung Aru Beach is a popular beach located in Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, a state in East Malaysia. The name Tanjung Aru means “casuarina cape” in Malay, as the beach is lined with casuarina trees that provide shade and beauty. The beach is also known for its soft white sand, clear blue water, and gentle breeze that make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature.

I love Le Méridien beds, and this stay reminded me why. The bed was spacious, the pillows were generously sized, and the sleep was genuinely delicious. From my experience, Le Méridien consistently delivers some of the best bedding, no matter which city I stay in. I usually book via the Marriott Bonvoy app, but this time I found a better rate on Trip.com. The location is excellent. It sits right in front of the Filipino Market and is just a short walk to seafood alfresco dining and durian stalls. At night, the surrounding roads come alive with makeshift food stalls and small vendors selling all kinds of local items, giving the area a very local, energetic feel. A comfortable stay with great sleep and a lively neighbourhood. The reception at checkin was also efficient and welcoming. Will stay here again.

I recently stayed at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, making it very convenient to explore the city. My room offered a stunning sea view, and watching the beautiful sunset from the comfort of the room was truly unforgettable. The environment was relaxing, clean, and well maintained, creating a pleasant atmosphere throughout the stay. One highlight was the superb Japanese food, which was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Overall, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu delivered comfort, great views, and excellent dining.

Thank you for providing an all-in-one environment for busy professionals like me. A place where I can work, meeting old friends, and at the same time allow my 3 boys to enjoy themselves safely. The availability of both a swimming pool and a small beach, with lifeguards on duty, gave me peace of mind throughout the day. the room was also clean and convinient for us also to enjoy beautiful morning sunrise. I was able to continue my work comfortably, spending time reading and writing on my laptop by the pool, surrounded by beautiful seaside scenery while watching my son playing. The experience was further enhanced by the availability of good food at the restaurant despite busy with customer, waitress e.g Ms Shamira and all were very helpful. Added with relaxing drinks in the evening while listening to live band performances, and quiet moments of healing by the beach, resting on the sofa with the sound of the sea. The staff were friendly and helpful, e.g Mr Alex and the team, who made our stay even more pleasant. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to come again.

I particularly love the location, 15 mins' ride to airport and 10 mins' ride to the city centre. The area of the resort is large, next to the sea, with quite some water or other kids activities available. We didn't try the pools but look nice. Breakfast has a wide variety with something different each day. The hotel is a bit aged and torn. Cleanliness inside the room and common areas (carpets) should be better.

Rooms were clean and comfortable, with great amenities that made work and rest easy. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Convenient location and professional service overall. I also manage to do some fishing just at the waterfront.

Had a wonderful Christmas Eve stay here. I stayed in a golf field view room, which was incredibly peaceful and calming. Even with the golf field view, I could still see parts of the ocean, and the sunset was absolutely beautiful. I spent some time at the pool and was able to enjoy a stunning sunset from there as well, overlooking the pier by the beach — it was truly an amazing view. I ordered room service during my stay and was very impressed with how prompt and friendly the service was. The room was cozy, clean, and very comfortable, and I especially enjoyed relaxing in the bathtub after a long day. Overall, everything felt calm and well taken care of, making it a perfect stay. I would definitely choose to stay here again next time.

This hotel offers an absolutely stunning experience, especially the panoramic sea views. Watching the ocean change colours from daytime blues to a dramatic sunset and peaceful evening was unforgettable. The scenery alone makes this place special. The room was modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed, with large windows that brought the outdoors in. Sitting by the window with a cup of coffee while watching planes pass over the sea and islands in the distance was surprisingly calming and unique. The atmosphere throughout the stay was quiet and relaxing, perfect for unwinding. Everything felt well-maintained and comfortable, from the room setup to the overall hotel environment. If you’re looking for a hotel with beautiful views, a peaceful vibe, and a touch of luxury, this is an excellent choice. I would happily return and highly recommend it to anyone seeking a memorable seaside stay.

Cleanliness: Very clean, felt very homey. Amenities: I cooked noodles from the supermarket using an induction cooker and a pot. I could see traces of cooking rice in the pot, and there was a clean but worn-out rag – it really had a homey feel, just like being at home. Environment: Very close to the port, although the angle is a bit off, you can see the sunset from the sofa in the room. Service: Very friendly, contact and response were prompt.

This place seriously blew me away. Located above Imago mall and styled like a high-end hotel, the room felt ultra-luxurious from the moment I walked in. Yes, it’s on the pricier side — but you can see and feel where the money goes. Every detail screams premium: a Dyson hairdryer, thick and fluffy slippers, electronic blinds, touch-control lighting, and a stunning bathtub that instantly sets the mood for a relaxing stay. The design is sleek, modern, and Instagram-worthy in every corner. What truly sets this place apart is the generosity in amenities. Instead of the standard small bottled water, they provide 1500ml drinking water, plus free-flow drinking water and soft drinks to enjoy anytime. Even the Starbucks cups added a classy, thoughtful touch that made the stay feel extra special. On top of all that, parking is provided, making it incredibly convenient — especially with the mall right downstairs. This isn’t just a place to sleep — it’s an experience. If you love luxury, comfort, and those little details that make you say “wow”, this place absolutely delivers.

Sabah Oriental Hotel in Kota Kinabalu (often cited on Kayak, Agoda, and Tripadvisor) offers a budget-friendly, central, yet aged, 4-star experience with mixed reviews. While praised for its convenient location near malls, friendly staff, and decent pool, many guests report needing urgent renovations, describing rooms as dated, with some issues regarding cleanliness and subpar, noisy air conditioning. Pros: Convenient location (near Imago Mall/city center), friendly service, spacious rooms, and a nice pool. Cons: Very old infrastructure, worn-out furniture, poor air conditioning, and inconsistent cleanliness in bathrooms. Best For: Budget-conscious travelers looking for a central spot, or quick, short-term stays. Overall Sentiment Value: 7.0/10 (”Good”). Cleanliness/Condition: Frequently criticized as needing maintenance. Service: Generally rated positively for staff friendliness. Recommendations - Request a room that has been refurbished. - Ensure the air conditioning works immediately upon check-in. - Ideal for those looking to stay near the city center without paying luxury prices.

Overall, it was pretty good! There are good places to eat right downstairs, and not far away by the river, there's a hawker center with seafood and other dishes in the evening, complete with a live singer. And I have to say, the Malaysian singers are quite good! It was advertised that the front desk had Chinese-speaking staff, but they didn't, which might be inconvenient for non-English speakers. I booked this room early from my home country, but the price ended up being higher than the current market rate. If you can enter the country, it's probably better not to book non-refundable rooms in advance, as there are many hotels with great value for money locally! What puzzled me most was that besides the main door, the room had another door connecting to the opposite room, and it wasn't soundproof. I wonder if all rooms are like this!

Stayed in Room 201, Level 2 King Bed. Avoid this room. The bathroom isn't practical - you have to step into the bathtub to shower. AC takes 2+ hours to cool the room. Furniture is old and the wardrobe door slams loudly. Worst part: It's right across from the staff engineering room. Lots of noise from staff going in and out. For this price in Kota Kinabalu, this is pretty much what you get, and it's decent enough. The location is quite convenient, making it easy to get to Gaya Street and the pier. However, there are a lot of snatch thieves on motorbikes on the main road outside, and it gets really noisy with motorcycles at night. The hotel room isn't very big, and the cleanliness is okay; the sheets and such are quite clean, but the facilities are a bit old. The bathroom isn't great, so it's just about passable for a stay.

Overall, I'm giving this hotel 4 stars, as my experience was quite satisfying. The location is definitely the biggest highlight, right in the heart of the city center. There are plenty of restaurants and supermarkets nearby, making it super convenient for visiting attractions or getting around, which is a huge plus for travelers. The room itself was spacious, and the standard king room had a well-designed layout with good natural light and ventilation, making for a comfortable stay. The hygiene was well-maintained, and the environment was clean and tidy. The staff were also quite enthusiastic, and the facilities generally met my travel needs, so it met my expectations overall. However, one small detail needs improvement: when I opened the wardrobe, there was a strong, pungent odor, possibly from the wood material or cleaning residue. This really impacted the user experience. I suggest the hotel improve ventilation and odor removal to enhance the attention to detail. All in all, apart from the slight wardrobe odor, the hotel performed well in terms of location, space, and basic services. The value for money is decent, and it's a good choice for travelers who prioritize location. I hope to see further improvements in the details in the future.

To make the most of your visit to Tanjung Aru Beach, you need to plan ahead and prepare well. Here are some practical tips that will help you have a pleasant and safe experience at the beach:

When to go

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is open all year round, but the best time to go is during the dry season, which is from March to October. The weather is sunny and dry, and the sea is calm and clear. The wet season, which is from November to February, is less ideal, as the weather is rainy and humid, and the sea is choppy and murky. However, you can still enjoy the beach during the wet season, as long as you check the weather forecast and avoid thunderstorms.

What to bring

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is a casual and laid-back place, so you don’t need to dress up or bring anything fancy. However, you do need to bring some essentials, such as
    • sunscreen
    • sunglasses
    • hat
    • water bottle
    • towel
    • swimsuit
    • change of clothes
    • camera or phone
    • cash or credit card
    • insect repellent
    • You can also bring some snacks or drinks if you want to picnic on the beach, but make sure to dispose of your trash properly.

What to avoid

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is a safe and friendly place, but there are some things that you should avoid doing or encountering there. For example, you should avoid swimming too far from the shore or during high tide, as there may be strong currents or jellyfish. You should also avoid leaving your belongings unattended or exposing them to theft or damage. You should also avoid littering or damaging the beach or its environment, as this will affect its beauty and sustainability.
