Gambar Profil Penulis

Have you ever dreamed of watching the sun set over the horizon, painting the sky and sea with a myriad of colors? If so, you should definitely visit Tanjung Aru Beach, one of the best sunset spots in Malaysia. Tanjung Aru Beach is a popular beach located in Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, a state in East Malaysia. The name Tanjung Aru means “casuarina cape” in Malay, as the beach is lined with casuarina trees that provide shade and beauty. The beach is also known for its soft white sand, clear blue water, and gentle breeze that make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature.

In this article, we will guide you through what to do, see, and eat at Tanjung Aru Beach, and give you some tips for visiting this amazing destination. Whether you are looking for some fun activities, some stunning views, or some delicious food, Tanjung Aru Beach has something for everyone. So, let’s get started!

How to Go to Tanjung Aru Beach

Tanjung Aru Beach is located only 6 km south of Kota Kinabalu city center, and you can get there by taxi, bus, or car. Here are some details about each option:

Taxi

  • Taking a taxi is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Tanjung Aru Beach, as it will take you directly to your destination without any stops or transfers.
  • However, it is also the most expensive option, as it will cost you around RM 20 to RM 30 (USD 5 to USD 7) for a one-way trip. You can find taxis at the airport, hotels, or shopping malls. You can also use apps such as Grab or MyCar to book a taxi online.

Bus

  • Taking a bus is the cheapest and most eco-friendly way to get to Tanjung Aru Beach, as it will cost you only RM 2 (USD 0.5) for a one-way trip. However, it is also the slowest and least comfortable option, as it will take you about 20 minutes and you may have to wait for the bus or change buses along the way.
  • You can take bus number 16 from the city center or bus number 16A from the airport. The buses run from 6:30 am to 8 pm daily. You can find the bus stops near City Hall and Wawasan Plaza in the southern part of Kota Kinabalu.

Car

  • Taking a car is the most flexible and convenient option, as it will give you more control over your time and route. You can rent a car from various agencies in the city or at the airport, or you can use apps such as GoCar or SOCAR to book a car online. The drive to Tanjung Aru Beach will take about 15 minutes, and you can follow the signs along Jalan Mat Salleh or Jalan Kepayan.

You can choose to swim in the warm and calm sea, sunbathe on the soft and clean sand, or play some water sports such as jet skiing, parasailing, banana boating, and more. You can also rent a bicycle or a scooter and explore the beach and its surroundings. There are also several jogging and walking paths along the beach that offer scenic views and fresh air.

If you are looking for some attractions near the beach, you can check out Tanjung Aru Perdana Park, a beautiful park that features a musical fountain, a children’s playground, a reflexology path, and a cultural village. You can also hop on the North Borneo Railway, a steam train that takes you on a nostalgic journey through the countryside of Sabah. Although theree was an error on the booking system at my side...but they solve the problem easily by giving me a room with seaview..(seems to be an upgrade to me) the room is clean and the cleaner did their job really well too by adding more towel rather than change my towel...for the breakfast it's good, though the only problem is their drinks is bland...thats all

I booked for three nights and was lucky enough to get upgraded from a city view room to a sea view room. The location is excellent; there's a coffee shop and bakery downstairs, and across the street, you'll find restaurants and massage parlors. On one side, there's a local market, and just a short walk across the road leads to the sea. Gaya Street is also just a convenient 4-5 minute walk away. It's very convenient and quiet. The hotel facilities are a bit old, but perfectly acceptable.

The biggest issue is that for a beachfront resort, its beach is practically nonexistent – though it doesn't really hinder the fun! I booked a sea-view room for three nights, expecting to step right out to the ocean. However, Magellan (hotel) seems to have a dock, so the 'beach' is all rocks. There's only about a 10-meter wide 'sandy' area, suitable for snorkeling. The underwater rocky reefs here make for pretty good snorkeling. The adjacent Pacific Sutera beach, which shares facilities, is a bit longer, but the waves are bigger there, so the snorkeling isn't as good as here. Both hotels share four pools, which is great for swimming, but it feels a bit odd to go to a beach resort and only swim in the pool. I didn't find any other major deal-breakers; overall, the experience was good. The service wasn't bad, and while the facilities aren't new, they're not run-down either. Breakfast was decent, with all the usual offerings. There are indeed a lot of Koreans here, even more than I encountered in Jeju Island previously. I guess this hotel is a social media hotspot in Korea!

I came here from the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang in Penang, which is a hotel from the 1970s, and it was surprisingly good overall. I actually expected this newer hotel to be much better, but I was genuinely shocked upon check-in. The room facilities were the worst I've stayed in during the past ten years, comparable to a county guesthouse from over two decades ago. I'm speechless. Even if they don't want to spend money on renovations, they could at least replace the electrical outlets and add USB ports. The balcony door lock was broken, the curtains were stained, and the hairdryer was like something from my student days. When people talked on the balcony next door, it sounded like they were right by your head. The shower door in the bathroom didn't close properly, and the toiletries were the lowest tier Shangri-La offers. During Chinese New Year, we paid 5,000 a night for a Kinabalu Wing sea view room (it's usually around 1,800 a night, and I booked it over two months in advance, so I don't know if the agent was ripping us off or if the hotel was just making a fortune). They really treat Chinese tourists as suckers. The service overall was good. A few individuals at the front desk did have a somewhat arrogant attitude, but perhaps that's just their personality or due to the sheer number of guests during the New Year period. Overall, it was decent. The hotel breakfast was quite extensive and tastier than at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Penang and Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur. The natural scenery is generally better than Sanya, with many water activities available at reasonable prices. Seafood restaurants in the city are also cheap, just a fifteen-minute taxi ride away. If you're looking for value for money, coming during the off-season might be an option, but this hotel is far from comparable to hotels of the same price in Sanya. If you're looking to just relax at the hotel, I'd advise caution in choosing this place. What I find most baffling is that Ctrip labels this as the number one luxury hotel in Kota Kinabalu. I have no idea how they define luxury, but I was definitely misled.

The room was beautiful and spacious, giving off a super vacation vibe! The hotel staff provided excellent service. There's also a bar by the sea where you can enjoy a drink and dinner. The location is right by Sutera Harbour, and the famous 'Love at Ringgit Island' (which was popular online) has now moved to Sutera Harbour. It's also not far from the airport, making it very convenient for getting around.

Exceeded expectations in every aspect. Second time and we had 4 nights of fabulous stay in a seaview (corner) room on 20th floor. Room was spacious and comfy, so much so that I just wanted to stay in 😄 Location is good, easy access to Gaya Street, Signal Hill, Todak Waterfront, Suria Sabah Mall and all the good food nearby. Hotel staff were friendly and professional and speaks multiple languages. Feedback and requests were promptly attended to. Kudos! Definitely my choice of hotel when in KK!

Had a wonderful stay at Sheraton — definitely one of the more memorable hotel experiences I’ve had. I really appreciated the thoughtful anniversary setup: towel decorations, balloons, and a nicely prepared dessert plate. Small details like this show good service culture and make the stay feel personal rather than just transactional. Location is also a strong point — convenient access to the city area while still feeling calm inside the hotel. Overall ambience is quiet, cozy, and suitable for both couples and business travellers. Overall: great hospitality, comfortable room quality, and good attention to guest experience. I’d definitely come back again.

Stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. The unit is suitable for two couples, a small family, or a group of four. The location is near town, which is very convenient. The owner is easy to communicate with. There is no deposit required upon check-in, and the check-in process is simple—just follow the given instructions. Check-out is also easy; just leave the key in the mailbox. The unit has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a small living room with a TV, and a small kitchen. A refrigerator is provided. The water heater works well, and there are 3 air conditioners. The TV has Netflix available, but you need to use your own account. The lift is fast and not crowded. For reference: Parking is paid parking — approximately RM3 for the first 2 hours, then RM1 for subsequent hours, up to a maximum of RM15 per day. There is no washing machine in the unit, but a laundry is available on the ground floor. Guests have access to the swimming pool. For Muslim guests: no sejadah (prayer mat) is provided, so please bring your own. Note: Hopefully, the owner can continue maintaining the unit to be more Muslim-friendly, as we would love to stay here again in the future. Thank you.

Service: Absolutely fantastic! They provide complimentary waterproof phone pouches, raincoats, eye masks, and other little essentials. Plus, there are free iced drinks and, best of all, free laundry service – perfect for a trip to Sabah! The laundry is super fast too, and the housekeeper is very responsive to guests' needs. Facilities: Not great, actually. The space is small, and the apartment design has some issues. The shower stall has a tiny bathtub that's neither comfortable for a bath nor spacious enough for a shower. And the sink is a nightmare – water splashes everywhere the moment you wash your hands, so it feels like you're washing your hands and feet at the same time. Environment: It's an apartment within the Imago mall. Plane noise is quite noticeable, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're a light sleeper. Since everyone takes taxis around here, convenience of transportation isn't really an issue. There's also a fish noodle restaurant in the mall that wasn't very good. Cleanliness: Good. It was clean and tidy, with no visible stains.

Worth the price with a strategic location The hotel offers good value for money and is located in a very strategic city-center area, making it easy to get around, with shops and restaurants nearby. The staff are friendly and helpful, providing good service throughout the stay. The room is clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. Overall, the stay was pleasant. However, there is room for improvement in terms of in-room utensils. It would be better if basic items such as spoons and dishwashing liquid were provided for added convenience. Overall, a satisfying stay and would recommend it.

The hotel's location is great, and the rooftop infinity pool offers amazing views, perfect for watching the sunset. Breakfast starts at 6:30 AM, which is very convenient for guests who want to go out early or catch an early flight. However, there are two downsides: 1. We had a quadruple room, but were only given two key cards. You need a key card to use the elevator. The front desk said each room only gets two cards, but I think they should provide cards based on the room type and number of guests. 2. For a 4-star hotel, they only provide one large towel per person. How is that even possible? We also took a firefly tour booked through Trip.com, and our guide was very enthusiastic and dedicated – highly recommended! When we checked out, we also booked a private transfer to the airport. The driver spoke Chinese, which was very helpful, and arrived 10 minutes early. I definitely recommend this as well. We also visited the wetland park, where we rented rain boots. The last part of the trip involved walking through the wetlands, which was a very unique experience.

The room was very spacious, with the living room and bedroom in separate areas. Being on the 12th floor, we had a partial sea view from the window. The location is super convenient, right next to Suria Sabah shopping mall and Jesselton Point. There aren't many facilities; the pool is okay for a quick photo op but too small for proper swimming. Breakfast was just so-so, ending at 10:30 AM, but on our last day, there was hardly anything left before 10 AM, and they weren't refilling it. You had to ask a server specifically for an omelet, and then wait a long time for it. Overall, it was pretty good, mainly because of the convenient location.

Reportedly newly renovated, the hotel's interior is very clean and new, making for a comfortable stay. Although the breakfast selection isn't vast, it's delicious. The location is downtown, so you can mostly walk or take an inexpensive taxi. However, the hotel is situated in an older, more dated part of town. I booked a bit late, so it was slightly more expensive, but it's still considered very good value for money in Kota Kinabalu.

The room is comfortable and clean, with strong water pressure in the shower, making it very enjoyable. The shampoo and body wash provided are of surprisingly good quality, unlike the low-grade products usually offered in budget hotels. What to See at Tanjung Aru Beach

The main attraction of Tanjung Aru Beach is undoubtedly the spectacular sunset that paints the sky and sea with vibrant colors. Every evening, hundreds of people gather at the beach to witness this natural phenomenon that never fails to amaze. The best time to watch the sunset is between 6 pm to 7 pm, depending on the season. The best place to watch the sunset is from the beach itself or from one of the nearby cafes or restaurants that offer panoramic views.

To capture the sunset with your camera or phone, you need to consider some factors such as lighting, angle, composition, and timing. You can use some apps or filters to enhance your photos or videos, but nothing beats the real thing. You can also try some creative techniques such as silhouettes, reflections, or time-lapses to make your shots more interesting.

Besides the sunset, there are also other sights that can be seen from Tanjung Aru Beach, such as islands, mountains, planes, and boats. Tanjung Aru Beach is close to several islands that are part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, a marine park that consists of five islands: Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik, and Sulug. Tips for Visiting Tanjung Aru Beach

To make the most of your visit to Tanjung Aru Beach, you need to plan ahead and prepare well. Here are some practical tips that will help you have a pleasant and safe experience at the beach:

When to go

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is open all year round, but the best time to go is during the dry season, which is from March to October. The weather is sunny and dry, and the sea is calm and clear. The wet season, which is from November to February, is less ideal, as the weather is rainy and humid, and the sea is choppy and murky. However, you can still enjoy the beach during the wet season, as long as you check the weather forecast and avoid thunderstorms.

What to bring

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is a casual and laid-back place, so you don’t need to dress up or bring anything fancy. However, you do need to bring some essentials, such as
    • sunscreen
    • sunglasses
    • hat
    • water bottle
    • towel
    • swimsuit
    • change of clothes
    • camera or phone
    • cash or credit card
    • insect repellent
    • You can also bring some snacks or drinks if you want to picnic on the beach, but make sure to dispose of your trash properly.

What to avoid

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is a safe and friendly place, but there are some things that you should avoid doing or encountering there. For example, you should avoid swimming too far from the shore or during high tide, as there may be strong currents or jellyfish. You should also avoid leaving your belongings unattended or exposing them to theft or damage. You should also avoid littering or damaging the beach or its environment, as this will affect its beauty and sustainability.
