Have you ever dreamed of watching the sun set over the horizon, painting the sky and sea with a myriad of colors? If so, you should definitely visit Tanjung Aru Beach, one of the best sunset spots in Malaysia. Tanjung Aru Beach is a popular beach located in Kota Kinabalu, the capital city of Sabah, a state in East Malaysia. The name Tanjung Aru means “casuarina cape” in Malay, as the beach is lined with casuarina trees that provide shade and beauty. The beach is also known for its soft white sand, clear blue water, and gentle breeze that make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature.

In this article, we will guide you through what to do, see, and eat at Tanjung Aru Beach, and give you some tips for visiting this amazing destination. Whether you are looking for some fun activities, some stunning views, or some delicious food, Tanjung Aru Beach has something for everyone. So, let’s get started!

How to Go to Tanjung Aru Beach

Tanjung Aru Beach is located only 6 km south of Kota Kinabalu city center, and you can get there by taxi, bus, or car. Here are some details about each option:

Taxi

  • Taking a taxi is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Tanjung Aru Beach, as it will take you directly to your destination without any stops or transfers.
  • However, it is also the most expensive option, as it will cost you around RM 20 to RM 30 (USD 5 to USD 7) for a one-way trip. You can find taxis at the airport, hotels, or shopping malls. You can also use apps such as Grab or MyCar to book a taxi online.

Bus

  • Taking a bus is the cheapest and most eco-friendly way to get to Tanjung Aru Beach, as it will cost you only RM 2 (USD 0.5) for a one-way trip. However, it is also the slowest and least comfortable option, as it will take you about 20 minutes and you may have to wait for the bus or change buses along the way.
  • You can take bus number 16 from the city center or bus number 16A from the airport. The buses run from 6:30 am to 8 pm daily. You can find the bus stops near City Hall and Wawasan Plaza in the southern part of Kota Kinabalu.

Car

  • Taking a car is the most flexible and convenient option, as it will give you more control over your time and route. You can rent a car from various agencies in the city or at the airport, or you can use apps such as GoCar or SOCAR to book a car online. The location is fantastic. There's a huge mimosa tree right outside the window. Every night, the egrets wash themselves there and look like a bouquet of flowers from my room; in the morning, they slowly spread out. There's a night market directly across the street, making dining very convenient, and the sea views are also excellent. As for the room itself, it's pretty much a standard Aimei Hotel room. The front desk service was okay, and they spoke a bit of Chinese. The doorman opening doors and everything else was also good.

The hotel's location is excellent. It's a 15-minute taxi ride from the airport and conveniently close to everything. Imago Shopping Mall is just a 10-minute walk away, and the new Jesselton Point ferry terminal is only 15 minutes on foot, making island hopping incredibly easy without any hassle. The only minor disappointment was that we didn't get an upgraded room, and the view wasn't particularly great. However, it was wonderfully quiet, with no motorbike noise whatsoever. I'd read some reviews saying the hotel was old, but I completely disagree – it felt very clean and new, with no strange odors. And let me tell you, the Hyatt's breakfast is amazing! There's a wide variety of options, and everything tastes delicious.

The Magellan Sutera Resort is a great hotel. My family had a wonderful experience here. The location is close to the port, you can enjoy your ocean activities and also can easily find restaurants and shopping mall nearby. That was important for the family tour. The best experience I want to mention is hotel service. The front desk representative Juliet is a nice and warm lady. She did great help to me and made my trip here pleasant and enjoyable. Thank you so much to Juliet.Wish to see you next time.

Let me talk about some aspects beyond the rooms. Even after checking out, if your flight is in the evening, the hotel still provides an exclusive area for showering, getting water, charging devices, and resting. The facilities are comprehensive and clean. The family-friendly amenities are incredibly well-equipped, featuring three large water slides, a kids' slide, and water spray equipment. There's also children's bowling, bubble shows, character interactions, and much more, with different activities every day. They also offer some paid activities for children. The adult and children's pools are well-separated. I had hoped to see the bonfire show, but it was unfortunately canceled due to the weather. For sunset views, you can simply watch from the hotel. The hotel has various restaurants, where you can enjoy a buffet or à la carte dinner. I do hope they can manage the insects in the restaurants, as there were flies during breakfast.

Booking was smooth and convenient, and upon arrival, the Marriott's service was as expected – efficient and helpful. However, despite emailing beforehand to request two adjoining rooms, we were placed on different floors, which was very inconvenient. The hotel's room service was good, but the room decor felt dated, not like it had been recently renovated, which was a bit disappointing. Also, if you're a light sleeper, definitely avoid this hotel. It's located directly under a flight path, so planes fly overhead frequently, which is terrible for sleep and rest; I was woken up multiple times!

This is my fourth time staying at this hotel. The location is great, and it has a private beach, though it's not very big. The pool is quite large, but shallow, and this time it wasn't very clean. I mainly stay here for the convenience of island hopping from Jesselton Point. Finally, the hotel is a bit old, and the facilities aren't very new; the safe in my room (room 1057) was broken when I arrived. The bed is a bit too soft for my liking. Breakfast was very crowded (it was a holiday) and the taste was just average with not much variety. Other than that, everything else was okay.

Taking the club access comes with 1)Breakfast (can go either at level 5 or 20) Level 5had more option but more people Level 20 more privacy, less people but the food option is not much 2) high tea Provides some biscuit, and can order drink 3)evening coctail Can consider as dinner I decided to book for the stay purposely for short trip in which i want to fully spend in my room, i would recommed to take if most of time stay at hotel, but if going out to enjoy the city, no need to take club access. During the stay, i tried their in room dining, i order quite a number of menu so it takes quite some time, honestly just typical hotel food with no extraordinary taste, but the view from my room is priceless making dinner become more fun to enjoy.9/10 chance of coming back here.

Stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. The unit is suitable for two couples, a small family, or a group of four. The location is near town, which is very convenient. The owner is easy to communicate with. There is no deposit required upon check-in, and the check-in process is simple—just follow the given instructions. Check-out is also easy; just leave the key in the mailbox. The unit has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a small living room with a TV, and a small kitchen. A refrigerator is provided. The water heater works well, and there are 3 air conditioners. The TV has Netflix available, but you need to use your own account. The lift is fast and not crowded. For reference: Parking is paid parking — approximately RM3 for the first 2 hours, then RM1 for subsequent hours, up to a maximum of RM15 per day. There is no washing machine in the unit, but a laundry is available on the ground floor. Guests have access to the swimming pool. For Muslim guests: no sejadah (prayer mat) is provided, so please bring your own. Note: Hopefully, the owner can continue maintaining the unit to be more Muslim-friendly, as we would love to stay here again in the future. Thank you.

This place seriously blew me away. Located above Imago mall and styled like a high-end hotel, the room felt ultra-luxurious from the moment I walked in. Yes, it’s on the pricier side — but you can see and feel where the money goes. Every detail screams premium: a Dyson hairdryer, thick and fluffy slippers, electronic blinds, touch-control lighting, and a stunning bathtub that instantly sets the mood for a relaxing stay. The design is sleek, modern, and Instagram-worthy in every corner. What truly sets this place apart is the generosity in amenities. Instead of the standard small bottled water, they provide 1500ml drinking water, plus free-flow drinking water and soft drinks to enjoy anytime. Even the Starbucks cups added a classy, thoughtful touch that made the stay feel extra special. On top of all that, parking is provided, making it incredibly convenient — especially with the mall right downstairs. This isn’t just a place to sleep — it’s an experience. If you love luxury, comfort, and those little details that make you say “wow”, this place absolutely delivers.

This was my third time staying at the Kaseh Hotel in Kota Kinabalu, and I brought my mother along for a trip. As always, the stay was incredibly satisfying! Service: The front desk staff were warm and helpful, offering check-in services in both Chinese and English. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and plentiful, with a wide variety of dishes that my mother particularly enjoyed. When cleaning the room, they always replenished necessary disposable items and even helped tidy up clothes on the bed and toiletries in the bathroom, which was very thoughtful. Cleanliness: The hotel was clean and tidy, with daily room cleaning service. Environment: The location is extremely convenient. Taking a Grab to city attractions is always within a ten-minute drive, making it easy to get to Sutera Harbour for island hopping and Gaya Street. There are also many restaurants and convenience stores nearby. It's only about a ten-minute Grab ride from the airport, so there's no need to wake up extra early to catch a flight. Getting around to and from the hotel is very convenient. Facilities: As always, the facilities are complete. You can take hotel towels with you for island hopping and snorkeling, just remember to return them. There are plenty of drying racks, perfect for hanging clothes. There's also an outdoor swimming pool. Hope to see Kota Kinabalu again next time!

The room was very clean and comfortable, much better than other hotels at the same price point. It's close to Shuguang Square, making shopping and dining very convenient. However, there's a construction site nearby, so it can be very noisy during the day, making it difficult to rest. It's also very close to the pier, about a five or six-minute walk, which is great for boat trips.

Sabah Oriental Hotel in Kota Kinabalu (often cited on Kayak, Agoda, and Tripadvisor) offers a budget-friendly, central, yet aged, 4-star experience with mixed reviews. While praised for its convenient location near malls, friendly staff, and decent pool, many guests report needing urgent renovations, describing rooms as dated, with some issues regarding cleanliness and subpar, noisy air conditioning. Pros: Convenient location (near Imago Mall/city center), friendly service, spacious rooms, and a nice pool. Cons: Very old infrastructure, worn-out furniture, poor air conditioning, and inconsistent cleanliness in bathrooms. Best For: Budget-conscious travelers looking for a central spot, or quick, short-term stays. Overall Sentiment Value: 7.0/10 (”Good”). Cleanliness/Condition: Frequently criticized as needing maintenance. Service: Generally rated positively for staff friendliness. Recommendations - Request a room that has been refurbished. - Ensure the air conditioning works immediately upon check-in. - Ideal for those looking to stay near the city center without paying luxury prices.

Housekeeping: On the 27th, they said it was a holiday and wouldn't be cleaning, so I just asked for a fresh towel. They didn't clean for the next few days either; I had to specifically ask them to clean the room. Environment: It's not soundproofed at all. This hotel offers excellent value for money. Its central location in Kota Kinabalu is incredibly convenient for getting around and finding food, with many popular local eateries within walking distance. As an economy brand under Wyndham, the hotel is generally clean and tidy. While the rooms are designed with simplicity in mind, they offer ample space and good natural light, and all essential amenities are provided. The staff are quite enthusiastic, and check-in and check-out processes are quick. There's an international restaurant on-site. While the breakfast selection isn't particularly luxurious, it's perfectly adequate for a simple daily meal. Tips for Visiting Tanjung Aru Beach

To make the most of your visit to Tanjung Aru Beach, you need to plan ahead and prepare well. Here are some practical tips that will help you have a pleasant and safe experience at the beach:

When to go

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is open all year round, but the best time to go is during the dry season, which is from March to October. The weather is sunny and dry, and the sea is calm and clear. The wet season, which is from November to February, is less ideal, as the weather is rainy and humid, and the sea is choppy and murky. However, you can still enjoy the beach during the wet season, as long as you check the weather forecast and avoid thunderstorms.

What to bring

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is a casual and laid-back place, so you don’t need to dress up or bring anything fancy. However, you do need to bring some essentials, such as
    • sunscreen
    • sunglasses
    • hat
    • water bottle
    • towel
    • swimsuit
    • change of clothes
    • camera or phone
    • cash or credit card
    • insect repellent
    • You can also bring some snacks or drinks if you want to picnic on the beach, but make sure to dispose of your trash properly.

What to avoid

  • Tanjung Aru Beach is a safe and friendly place, but there are some things that you should avoid doing or encountering there. For example, you should avoid swimming too far from the shore or during high tide, as there may be strong currents or jellyfish. You should also avoid leaving your belongings unattended or exposing them to theft or damage. You should also avoid littering or damaging the beach or its environment, as this will affect its beauty and sustainability.

Visit Tanjung Aru Today!
