20+ Best (MUST TRY) Things to Do When You're Visiting Melaka

Gambar Profil Penulis

Melaka – our beloved historical city where every corner tells a story, every bite reminds you of home, and every weekend trip somehow ends with a food coma.

For most Malaysians, Melaka is the go-to short getaway spot. Why? Because it’s got everything we love:
Rich history – A mix of Malay sultanate, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences.
Amazing food – You haven’t lived until you’ve had authentic asam pedas here.
Chill vibes – No need to rush; just walk, eat, and repeat.

I’ve been to Melaka more times than I can count (mostly for the food, let’s be real). But over the years, I’ve realized something – many of us keep doing the same things: Jonker Walk, chicken rice balls, maybe a boat ride. But Melaka is so much more than that!

So in this guide, I’ll share not just the must-visit places but also some hidden gems and local tips to make your next trip extra special. Whether you’re a history geek, a foodie, or just someone looking for a fun weekend escape – there’s something here for you. 💙

Historical & Cultural Must-Visits

Melaka’s history is like a rojak – a mix of cultures, rulers, and stories, all blending together into something uniquely Malaysian. If you want to really feel the city’s soul, these are the places you must visit:

📍 A’Famosa & St. Paul’s Hill

The exterior of A Famosa

The OG landmark of Melaka. You’ve seen it in history books, now it’s time to climb up St. Paul’s Hill and take that classic tourist photo in front of the A’Famosa ruins. The view from the top? 10/10. The stairs? Maybe not so much.

🔥 Pro Tip: Go in the evening when it’s cooler. Also, be ready for some unexpected leg day exercise.

📍 Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum

Melaka sultanate palace, outside

Want to see how the Melaka Sultanate lived before the colonial times? This museum is a must. It’s a gorgeous wooden replica of the Sultan’s palace, filled with historical artifacts and stories about the golden days of Melaka.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you love Malay heritage and legends (Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, siapa betul?), this place is a goldmine of info.

📍 Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum

Inside of the baba nyonya heritage building

Ah, the Peranakans – one of the most fascinating cultures in Malaysia! This museum takes you inside a real Baba-Nyonya house, complete with antique furniture, intricate designs, and stories about their traditions.

🔥 Pro Tip: Take the guided tour – the stories they tell make all the difference! Also, if you love Peranakan-style OOTDs, this is the place to flex.

📍 Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Exterior of Cheng Hoon Teng temple

This is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia (founded in 1645!), and it’s still an active place of worship. Even if you’re not religious, the architecture alone is worth the visit – think intricate carvings, stunning murals, and a peaceful vibe.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you visit during Chinese festivals, the atmosphere here is super lively and beautiful.

Location: easy to find and surrounding is really nice to walk and good street food around. Parking: a separate parking bays that needs to tag in with either of the payment cards for access. Upon leaving the hotel, need to remember to validate the card for hotel guest free parking facility. It is a non-covered parking so if rain expect inconvenience and if sunshine expect excess heat in the car. NOT really friendly but acceptable. Room: good bed good pillows, floor not so clean can see some hairfall wasn't wiped off. Bath tub pipe maybe a bit old or seldom in used hence the water flowed out was yellowish. The linen is soft but can know they are quite old, that old linen smell is quitw obvious. Aircond: is either we don't know how to operate, it can't seemed to be able to be adjusted to the temperature we want. It will become quite warm in the midnight. Sound proof: SUPER BAD 👎 Imagine we will know what is happening exactly in the bathroom and toilet. The noise from the road till midnight is even clearer. We are staying at lvl 8 and the tallest is lvl 10. Service: Good hospitality and polite. Restaurant breakfast: not up to par, honest feedback.

The location of Eco Tree Hotel is in an older part of Melaka that is now less travelled but still has many eateries. While the room booked didn't have windows because of the price, it was nonetheless spacious and comfortable. Interestingly, the wardrobe was located in the bathroom. Liked the bathroom layout though. Unfortunately it was the rainy season and the pool was closed for maintenance anyway. Did venture to the rooftop to have a peak, definitely need some refurbishment there. If the price is maintained at this level, would definitely recommend.

During busy season such as Christmas, the hotel can get very pack. The amenities area on lvl 9 is packed to the brim. Room card also doesn't work for gym. Similar to what many reviews mentioned before, the lifts are inadequate but nothing much could be done. Be prepared to wait up to 15 mins during the morning rush. I booked 2 deluxe king rooms for 2adults and 2 teens as I don't require a lounge (additional room with sofa) and requested for connecting rooms but was told connecting rooms must booked with 1 family suite (1 room with 1 lounge) and 1 normal room. Cons: The rooms are quite old. Doors are not closed properly. Have to ensure the doors are fully closed every time. The lifts are slow and HOT! There's no ventilation when the lift is full!!! The walkways have no air con!!!! The room's air con need to on full blast. Pros: Super convenient location. Many nice food around and opposite the hotel. Cottage Spices nonya food, hock kee gift shop, ee ji ban chicken rice, etc... 15mins walk to jonker, 5mins to shopping malls, hatten coach bay Nice sea view at the swimming pool. Super fast room service from the housekeeping team when I requested for more mineral water, toilet paper and shower gels. Daily housekeeping 👍👍👍 but please knock before entering the room when we are inside as we didn't hang the sign to clean room, the staff still enter 😮😮😮😮 Affordable price $302 for 3 nights x 2 deluxe king rooms.

Foodie Paradise 🍜

Okay, let’s be honest – the real reason most of us go to Melaka? THE FOOD. 😍

Melaka’s food scene is legendary. Spicy, tangy, sweet, and full of history, every dish here tells a story. If you’re not leaving Melaka with a full stomach and a packed container of kuih for the drive home, you’re doing it wrong.

Here are the must-eat foods (with insider tips on where to get the best ones!):

🔥 Asam Pedas Power – The Sourest, Spiciest, Best Thing Ever

Delicious spread of asam pedas

If you love your food pedas kaw and full of flavor, asam pedas is a must. This fiery fish stew, cooked with tamarind, chili, and spices, will wake up your soul and clear your sinuses.

📍 Where to go?
✔️ Asam Pedas Claypot Kota Laksamana – Spicy, tangy, served bubbling hot!
✔️ Asam Pedas Selera Kampung – More homey, less touristy.

🔥 Pro Tip: Order extra rice. You will need it.

🥥 Klebang Coconut Shake – The Ultimate Hot Day Refreshment

Unique Experiences You Might Not Have Tried

Okay, so you’ve stuffed yourself with asam pedas, wiped out an entire tray of Nyonya kuih, and walked off the food coma at A’Famosa. Now what?

A lot of Malaysians think Melaka is just history + food (which, fair, but there’s more!). If you want to do something different, here are some cool, lesser-known experiences to check out:

🌊 Melaka River Cruise – A Chill, Romantic Ride Through Time

The melaka river cruise

Forget Venice – we’ve got our own sungai-style gondola cruise right here. The Melaka River Cruise takes you on a 45-minute ride through the heart of the city, passing colorful murals, old kampung houses, and hidden cafés.

📍 Where to go? Melaka River Jetty (near the Dutch Square)
Best time to go? Nighttime – the city lights up beautifully!
💰 Price? RM30 (adults), RM25 (kids)

🔥 Pro Tip: Bring a light jacket – the breeze at night can be chilly. Also, couples, this is your chance for a santai-santai romantic moment. 💕

🌇 The Shore Sky Tower – The Best Sunset Spot in Melaka

The tallest building in melaka, interior

🏡 Visit Kampung Morten – A Slice of Traditional Malay Life

A small mini Malaysia village in Melaka

If you’ve ever been curious about traditional Malay villages, Kampung Morten is a must-visit. This charming kampung is right in the city, with well-preserved Malay wooden houses and a beautiful riverside view. The most famous house, Villa Sentosa, is a living museum where you can see what life was like in the old days.

The famous Jonker Walk

Ahhh, Jonker Walk – the ultimate "makan while you jalan" experience. Every Friday to Sunday, Jonker Street transforms into a hustling, bustling night market, with food stalls, souvenir shops, live music, and random uncle selling stuff you don’t need but will probably buy anyway.

🍹 Hidden Cafés & Bars – Where to Chill After Dark

Melaka night lounge and bar

Staff try their best to serve everyone during the busy period, but there's only so much they can do. Online pictures are accurate. Don't expect much luxury but the rooms are big. Perhaps could try during lull season.

Room was spacious (living room, 2 bedrooms 2 toilets) comfortable beds (2 single & 1 queen size). Bathroom was clean. No Face / hand towel provided. TV reception was weak. the chair cushions were abit worn off and dust can been seen on beams of the table. Some wood lamination has peel off and chips near the window panel. I recently had the pleasure of staying at The Pines Melaka Hotel and was incredibly satisfied with my experience. The room space was wonderfully generous, providing ample room to relax and move around comfortably. One of the highlights was undoubtedly the bathtub. It was exceptionally clean, and the ability to enjoy a good view while soaking was a fantastic touch that truly enhanced the relaxation. This is a crucial factor for a comfortable trip, and the hotel certainly delivered. Beyond the comfort, I was very impressed with the hotel's aesthetic. Basically value for money for the not fussy visitor. Ample parking, nice lobby, friendly front desk staff. Room maintenance a bit slack though: 1. Dripping aircon - done up immediately when I notified front desk. Drippy aircon must have caused the warpped flooring over time. 2. Shower faucet loose, spraying water everywhere if not held down, wetting the room 3. No shower curtain to prevent oversplash Apart from that, it is fine.

We had a good rest at Hallmark Crown Hotel. The room was a bit small but clean. The bedsheets and towels were clean. The water pressure was very good, the air conditioning was comfortable and the service was above satisfactory. The room has all the basic facilities and amenities. Upon checking in, we found the room kettle was rusty but it was promptly replaced by a good one after we brought it up to the operation's attention. The sewage system disappointed us, too. On our first night, our toilet choked. But the technician came promptly and cleared the mess. The bathroom waste water took a long time to go down too but we did not make a complaint. The continental breakfast was average but sufficient. The checking out procedure was also fuss free. Overall, Hallmark Crown provides a decent accommodation at a budget price.

Pros: Two main advantages – ample parking and close proximity to Jonker Street. Cons: The hotel's beds and pillows are very old; the bed was too soft, and I didn't get good rest. The sheets and duvet are also outdated and definitely need replacing. The carpet had an odor. I wouldn't recommend the breakfast; it felt like no effort was put in. The fruit was sour, the baked beans had an odd smell, and the rice seemed like it was from the day before. I had to spend extra money to take my kids out for breakfast.
