20+ Best (MUST TRY) Things to Do When You're Visiting Melaka

Gambar Profil Penulis

Melaka – our beloved historical city where every corner tells a story, every bite reminds you of home, and every weekend trip somehow ends with a food coma.

For most Malaysians, Melaka is the go-to short getaway spot. Why? Because it’s got everything we love:
Rich history – A mix of Malay sultanate, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences.
Amazing food – You haven’t lived until you’ve had authentic asam pedas here.
Chill vibes – No need to rush; just walk, eat, and repeat.

I’ve been to Melaka more times than I can count (mostly for the food, let’s be real). But over the years, I’ve realized something – many of us keep doing the same things: Jonker Walk, chicken rice balls, maybe a boat ride. But Melaka is so much more than that!

So in this guide, I’ll share not just the must-visit places but also some hidden gems and local tips to make your next trip extra special. Whether you’re a history geek, a foodie, or just someone looking for a fun weekend escape – there’s something here for you. 💙

Historical & Cultural Must-Visits

Melaka’s history is like a rojak – a mix of cultures, rulers, and stories, all blending together into something uniquely Malaysian. If you want to really feel the city’s soul, these are the places you must visit:

📍 A’Famosa & St. Paul’s Hill

The exterior of A Famosa

The OG landmark of Melaka. You’ve seen it in history books, now it’s time to climb up St. Paul’s Hill and take that classic tourist photo in front of the A’Famosa ruins. The view from the top? 10/10. The stairs? Maybe not so much.

🔥 Pro Tip: Go in the evening when it’s cooler. Also, be ready for some unexpected leg day exercise.

📍 Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum

Melaka sultanate palace, outside

Want to see how the Melaka Sultanate lived before the colonial times? This museum is a must. It’s a gorgeous wooden replica of the Sultan’s palace, filled with historical artifacts and stories about the golden days of Melaka.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you love Malay heritage and legends (Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, siapa betul?), this place is a goldmine of info.

📍 Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum

Inside of the baba nyonya heritage building

Ah, the Peranakans – one of the most fascinating cultures in Malaysia! This museum takes you inside a real Baba-Nyonya house, complete with antique furniture, intricate designs, and stories about their traditions.

🔥 Pro Tip: Take the guided tour – the stories they tell make all the difference! Also, if you love Peranakan-style OOTDs, this is the place to flex.

📍 Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Exterior of Cheng Hoon Teng temple

This is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia (founded in 1645!), and it’s still an active place of worship. Even if you’re not religious, the architecture alone is worth the visit – think intricate carvings, stunning murals, and a peaceful vibe.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you visit during Chinese festivals, the atmosphere here is super lively and beautiful.

Overall experience was not too bad. Check-in was smooth as we arrived later than expected. Service - Friendly staff with nice smiles. Room cleanliness - I would say relatively clean. At least no stains on the bed apart from the headboard. Toilet sink was choking though and water took time to flush through. And quite a few rundown parts and rust. Could do better to clean and remove water stains. Location - Surrounded by tons of food options, massage places and some karaoke options. Didn't shop in the malls nearby but the Hatten Square is pretty ded. Nearby drive away from the famous Jonker street.

Everything was perfect, except for the ceiling fan, which had white dust on it. The breakfast was amazing with so many options, but I couldn’t finish the eggs Benedict I ordered from the menu. The location was perfect, allowing easy access to the heart of the city. I strongly recommend it.

The hotel is beautiful and the service is excellent. The air conditioning is also very quiet. We arrived early for our 3 PM check-in, and since our room wasn't ready, we left our luggage at the front desk. Once the room was cleaned, the hotel staff kindly brought our bags up to the room for us, which was a very thoughtful touch. There are several Hong Kong-style cafes around the hotel, making dining and getting around quite convenient.

The 3-bedroom apartment is perfect for a family of six — spacious and comfortable, with two toilets provided. The only downsides were a leaking bidet and the absence of wifi. Since our booking included breakfast for six, we enjoyed a generous breakfast buffet on Level 3A at Swiss Garden. Overall, we're happy with the stay.

I really like to body wash that was prepared by the hotel, it is way better than those shoplot hotel that they given. The place is also very neat and nice to stay. Wifi is useable. The one thing that is not really good is that the room is using the small lights only, so it is quite dark when comes to night. But it is quite a good thing that the mirror in front of the basin is good, it has its own light so that girls can do the makeups.

I stayed at The Pines Hotel recently and overall had a pleasant experience. The hotel feels modern and welcoming, with spacious rooms that are perfect for families or anyone who appreciates extra space. I especially liked the room layout – clean, airy, and comfortable, with good city views. The location is quite convenient, just a short drive to Melaka’s main attractions, but far enough to avoid the heavy traffic around Jonker Street. There are also eateries and shops nearby, which made things easier. Breakfast was served at the Oak Café with a wide variety of dishes, both local and international. The spread was decent, though it could be improved slightly in terms of freshness and variety. Facilities-wise, the swimming pool was a highlight, especially the infinity-style pool overlooking the city. The staff were polite and helpful whenever we needed assistance, though service could be a bit more attentive during peak times. Overall, The Pines is a great choice if you’re looking for a comfortable and family-friendly stay in Melaka. I stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights. The hotel has an excellent location. It’s right in the city center, yet surprisingly quiet. Parking is available, which is a big plus. The building has a charming heritage character, while the rooms come with modern amenities. Even small appliances like a hairdryer and iron are already provided in the room, so there's no need to request them from the front desk. Breakfast was impressive, both in terms of food and ambience. Unfortunately, the stay was affected by a bed bug issue. I reported it to the front desk after the first night, but it wasn’t resolved. On the second night, I woke up with even more bites. This place has a lot of strengths. If the bed bug problem is properly addressed, it could take the guest experience to the next level and encourage more people to return. Foodie Paradise 🍜

Okay, let’s be honest – the real reason most of us go to Melaka? THE FOOD. 😍

Melaka’s food scene is legendary. Spicy, tangy, sweet, and full of history, every dish here tells a story. If you’re not leaving Melaka with a full stomach and a packed container of kuih for the drive home, you’re doing it wrong.

Here are the must-eat foods (with insider tips on where to get the best ones!):

🔥 Asam Pedas Power – The Sourest, Spiciest, Best Thing Ever

Delicious spread of asam pedas

If you love your food pedas kaw and full of flavor, asam pedas is a must. This fiery fish stew, cooked with tamarind, chili, and spices, will wake up your soul and clear your sinuses.

📍 Where to go?
✔️ Asam Pedas Claypot Kota Laksamana – Spicy, tangy, served bubbling hot!
✔️ Asam Pedas Selera Kampung – More homey, less touristy.

🔥 Pro Tip: Order extra rice. You will need it.

🥥 Klebang Coconut Shake – The Ultimate Hot Day Refreshment

Refreshing coconute shake drink

One word: legendary. This is not just any coconut shake – it’s blended fresh coconut, vanilla ice cream, and magic in a cup. Perfect for cooling down after walking around Jonker.

📍 Where to go?
✔️ Klebang Original Coconut Shake – The OG, but be prepared for a queue!
✔️ Coconut Shake Batu Berendam – Equally good, less waiting.

🔥 Pro Tip: Get the special one with extra ice cream on top. #NoRegrets

🍢 Satay Celup – It’s Like Lok Lok, But Better

Spicy and delicious satay celup
Hot boiling sauce for the satay celup

Imagine skewers of meat, seafood, and vegetables dipped into a boiling pot of thick, nutty satay sauce. It’s communal, fun, and delicious!

📍 Where to go?
✔️ Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup – Local favorite, less touristy.
✔️ Capitol Satay Celup – More famous, but expect long lines.

🔥 Pro Tip: The sauce gets better the more people dip into it. It’s like hotpot, but with satay vibes!

🍜 Nyonya Kuih & Laksa – Sweet, Savory, and Full of History

Huge assortment of nyonya kuehs
bowl of delicious asam laksa

Melaka is the heartland of Baba-Nyonya cuisine, and you need to try their colorful kuih and laksa. The kuih is soft, fragrant, and not too sweet, while the laksa is a perfect mix of creamy coconut and spicy broth.

📍 Where to go?
✔️ Kuih: Baba Charlie Nyonya Kuih – Hidden in a kampung house, but 100% worth the hunt!
✔️ Laksa: Donald & Lily’s – Thick, flavorful broth that hugs the noodles perfectly.

🔥 Pro Tip: Bring some kuih home – your family will love you for it.

Unique Experiences You Might Not Have Tried

Okay, so you’ve stuffed yourself with asam pedas, wiped out an entire tray of Nyonya kuih, and walked off the food coma at A’Famosa. Now what?

A lot of Malaysians think Melaka is just history + food (which, fair, but there’s more!). If you want to do something different, here are some cool, lesser-known experiences to check out:

🌊 Melaka River Cruise – A Chill, Romantic Ride Through Time

The melaka river cruise

Forget Venice – we’ve got our own sungai-style gondola cruise right here. The Melaka River Cruise takes you on a 45-minute ride through the heart of the city, passing colorful murals, old kampung houses, and hidden cafés.

📍 Where to go? Melaka River Jetty (near the Dutch Square)
Best time to go? Nighttime – the city lights up beautifully!
💰 Price? RM30 (adults), RM25 (kids)

Location was amazing tho, 10 mins to the nearest mall, heng chicken rice balls across the street :)

Pristine location, rooms are clean and tidy. The only drawbacks are, carpark is slightly troublesome although it's in the same building. Have to change lift and walk a a distance. Had to pay RM5 for 24hrs parking though. Reception was short staffed. Only 1 staff was working when we were checking in and out. Had to wait for quite a while for our turn.

It offers good value, especially for those who prefer bigger rooms compared to other hotels in the

Keep up the good work — you’re almost there.

I had a pleasant stay here with my family. Our room had a view facing the main road, and although there was no bathtub, only a shower but the kids still enjoyed the space. The area came alive at night with a bustling bundle fair just outside, adding to the lively atmosphere. The building has a charming colonial-style architecture, which adds to its unique character. The hotel seemed to be popular among local Malay guests, giving it a warm and familiar vibe. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food was quite satisfying. It would be even better if the hotel had facilities like a gym and spa, which I personally prefer. Overall, it was a great staycation for the whole family.

Loved the decorations in the hotel which gives an ideal of what a Baba’s house really looked like. Location was great as it is within walking distance to Jonker Street with its night market & interesting shops around the vicinity.
