Melaka – our beloved historical city where every corner tells a story, every bite reminds you of home, and every weekend trip somehow ends with a food coma.

For most Malaysians, Melaka is the go-to short getaway spot. Why? Because it’s got everything we love:
Rich history – A mix of Malay sultanate, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences.
Amazing food – You haven’t lived until you’ve had authentic asam pedas here.
Chill vibes – No need to rush; just walk, eat, and repeat.

I’ve been to Melaka more times than I can count (mostly for the food, let’s be real). But over the years, I’ve realized something – many of us keep doing the same things: Jonker Walk, chicken rice balls, maybe a boat ride. But Melaka is so much more than that!

So in this guide, I’ll share not just the must-visit places but also some hidden gems and local tips to make your next trip extra special. Whether you’re a history geek, a foodie, or just someone looking for a fun weekend escape – there’s something here for you. 💙

Historical & Cultural Must-Visits

Melaka’s history is like a rojak – a mix of cultures, rulers, and stories, all blending together into something uniquely Malaysian. If you want to really feel the city’s soul, these are the places you must visit:

📍 A’Famosa & St. Paul’s Hill

The exterior of A Famosa

The OG landmark of Melaka. You’ve seen it in history books, now it’s time to climb up St. Paul’s Hill and take that classic tourist photo in front of the A’Famosa ruins. The view from the top? 10/10. The stairs? Maybe not so much.

🔥 Pro Tip: Go in the evening when it’s cooler. Also, be ready for some unexpected leg day exercise.

📍 Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum

Melaka sultanate palace, outside

Want to see how the Melaka Sultanate lived before the colonial times? This museum is a must. It’s a gorgeous wooden replica of the Sultan’s palace, filled with historical artifacts and stories about the golden days of Melaka.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you love Malay heritage and legends (Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, siapa betul?), this place is a goldmine of info.

📍 Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum

Inside of the baba nyonya heritage building

Ah, the Peranakans – one of the most fascinating cultures in Malaysia! This museum takes you inside a real Baba-Nyonya house, complete with antique furniture, intricate designs, and stories about their traditions.

🔥 Pro Tip: Take the guided tour – the stories they tell make all the difference! Also, if you love Peranakan-style OOTDs, this is the place to flex.

📍 Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Exterior of Cheng Hoon Teng temple

This is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia (founded in 1645!), and it’s still an active place of worship. Even if you’re not religious, the architecture alone is worth the visit – think intricate carvings, stunning murals, and a peaceful vibe.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you visit during Chinese festivals, the atmosphere here is super lively and beautiful.

This hotel absolutely deserves a full five-star rating for its location, service, and ambiance! Upon arrival, the front desk thoughtfully offered a smoothie and a cold towel, instantly refreshing us from the scorching travel heat. After check-in, a staff member personally escorted us to our room, and we even received meticulous turndown service in the evening – a truly excellent experience. The location is also impeccable. Directly across the river is the famous Dutch Square (Red Square), and it's only about a 200-meter walk to Jonker Street and the night market, making it incredibly convenient for getting around. What surprised me the most was discovering, while looking through old photos, that I had unknowingly captured this hotel in a picture way back in 2012 when I first visited Malacca. To reunite with it years later as a guest feels like a rare and wonderful serendipitous encounter. Highly recommended!

The room decor was very thoughtfully done, with many small ornaments and board games, making it perfect for family travel. The living facilities are complete, with a fridge and induction cooktop, so you can buy seafood from the market and cook it yourself. The room has a great view; you can see the city at night and the sea during the day. The host was very enthusiastic, and the location is excellent, close to supermarkets, restaurants, and the pier.

Convenient location, right where the bus from Singapore have a stop at. It's also where the Buses back to Singapore will pickup passengers. Also just a short walk to multiple malls, including a sheltered 10min walk all the way to A Famosa, and another 10min walk to the Jonker Street entrance. Also close to multiple great restaurants (Atlantic Nyonya, Ee Ji Ban) and massage places. Service was friendly and helpful, and though my checkin was delayed by 30min as the room wasn't ready, they allowed checkout till 1230pm so net-net I guess haha! Although I didn't have any meals at the restaurant, the staff was kind enough to provide utensils and a bowl when I requested one for my grabfood. Room-wise, it was sufficient and decent for its price. Bed was comfortable, Aircon was cool, and cleanliness passable. Only a few minor issues like some stains at the corner of the bedsheets, no shaver set, and the poor quality TV. I think the most bothersome was that the walls and door let in sounds so easily and we had the misfortune of having elderly Vietnamese tourists staying around us who talk so loudly and with a tendency to chat along the hallway. Otherwise, really recommend Estadia Hotel for anyone looking for an affordable and comfortable stay at Melaka!

I had a wonderful stay at ibis Melaka! The hotel is clean, modern, and very well-maintained. The location is excellent — just a short walk to Jonker Street and other main attractions, yet quiet enough for a relaxing night’s rest. The room was comfortable, with cozy beds, good air-conditioning, and all the essentials you’d expect from an international hotel brand. The staff were friendly, professional, and always ready to help with directions or local recommendations. Breakfast offered a good variety of both local and Western options, and the dining area was bright and pleasant. Parking was convenient, and Wi-Fi connection was stable throughout the stay. Overall, ibis Melaka delivers great value for money — perfect for both leisure and business travelers looking for a reliable, comfortable place to stay in the heart of Melaka. Highly recommended!

I stayed at The Pines Hotel recently and overall had a pleasant experience. The hotel feels modern and welcoming, with spacious rooms that are perfect for families or anyone who appreciates extra space. I especially liked the room layout – clean, airy, and comfortable, with good city views. The location is quite convenient, just a short drive to Melaka’s main attractions, but far enough to avoid the heavy traffic around Jonker Street. There are also eateries and shops nearby, which made things easier. Breakfast was served at the Oak Café with a wide variety of dishes, both local and international. The spread was decent, though it could be improved slightly in terms of freshness and variety. Facilities-wise, the swimming pool was a highlight, especially the infinity-style pool overlooking the city. The staff were polite and helpful whenever we needed assistance, though service could be a bit more attentive during peak times. Overall, The Pines is a great choice if you’re looking for a comfortable and family-friendly stay in Melaka. It offers good value, especially for those who prefer bigger rooms compared to other hotels in the

We booked 2 superior double rooms on 19- 21 March 2025. We stayed at level 2 (highest floor). Location : The hotel is located conveniently about 5 mins walk from the Jonkers street. Amenities: The room is equipped with basic hotel items such as bathroom towel, shower gel, shampoo, toothbrush/toothpaste set, refrigerator, hairdryer, bedroom slipper. Very spacious shower area. It does not come with face towel so bring yours if you need it. Only 2 hangers given, but okay with us. The aircon had some vibration sound. We called the front desk and they quickly responded by sending someone up to check on the aircon. Parking: The hotel provides complimentary parking lots and there were plenty of lots in there. Checkout was fast. Generally pleased with the price we paid. May book again.

Overall, okay for a night stay. Pros : - COMFY BEDS - Nearby shops and food. Cons : - There was a really weird uncomfortable smell in the lift lobby on the 8th floor and in our rooms. - Need to go to the counter to let them know abt going out every time. (Scan touch & go card) - Rooms were rlly dark and dim and looks like nobody stayed here for a long time. - Shower had no doors or shower curtain so have to control when showering to prevent water getting all over the floor. - Slippers have to be requested during check-in and we weren’t inform about it and had to go back down to ask, the staff even stood around waiting for tips.

Sorry, I won't be returning to this hotel. I booked a king bed, but when I arrived, I got two single beds pushed together. Then the staff let me change to a second room, but the air conditioning was noisy, which really disturbed my sleep. So the staff let me change rooms again, but the third room was in really poor condition. The bed was broken, causing the mattress to sag downwards. The floor was peeling, the dressing table was old and shabby, and the AC wires were scattered behind the bed. I was traveling with a small child, which made it even worse. What bad luck! I've never had to change rooms three times before. Luckily, the staff's response was good, and we got an upgrade to a family room. The room was okay, and the air conditioning was fine, but I definitely won't be coming back.

Stayed for a night in Malacca and booked a deluxe twin room, but I wasn't too happy with the room on the first floor. After speaking with the front desk staff, I paid a little extra to upgrade to an executive suite. Overall, the executive suite's facilities were fantastic. The hotel's location is also excellent, right by the river, so you can take a stroll along the river after breakfast in the morning. It's also very close to all the main attractions on Jonker Street. Highly recommended.

Okay, let’s be honest – the real reason most of us go to Melaka? THE FOOD. 😍

Melaka’s food scene is legendary. Spicy, tangy, sweet, and full of history, every dish here tells a story. If you’re not leaving Melaka with a full stomach and a packed container of kuih for the drive home, you’re doing it wrong.

Here are the must-eat foods (with insider tips on where to get the best ones!):

🔥 Asam Pedas Power – The Sourest, Spiciest, Best Thing Ever

Delicious spread of asam pedas

If you love your food pedas kaw and full of flavor, asam pedas is a must. This fiery fish stew, cooked with tamarind, chili, and spices, will wake up your soul and clear your sinuses.

📍 Where to go?

📍 Where to go?
✔️ Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup – Local favorite, less touristy.
✔️ Capitol Satay Celup – More famous, but expect long lines.

This was our fifth stay at this hotel, and unfortunately, this time was very disappointing. 1. Check-in The check-in process was smooth, and the staff were polite and welcoming. I had requested a Queen Bed room instead of Twin Beds. However, I was informed that because my booking was made at the last minute (one day before check-in), only a Twin Bed room was available as all Queen Bed rooms were fully occupied. We accepted the explanation and proceeded with the room provided. 2. Room Condition Upon entering the room, the first issue we noticed was the air conditioning. Despite setting the fan speed to high, the room remained warm and the air conditioner was not cooling properly. 3. Bathroom There appeared to be a blockage beneath the sink, as water was pooling around the sink and toilet area. In addition, the shower holder was broken while we were using the shower. We chose not to complain and continued our stay. 4. Room Door & Bathroom Door The bathroom door could not be closed properly unless it was pulled and pushed firmly. The more serious issue occurred the next morning after breakfast when our room door became stuck and could not be opened. We contacted maintenance, and the team arrived to inspect the problem. From approximately 8:00 AM onwards, we were unable to access our room. Around 8:30 AM, the maintenance team requested approval from the Front Office to move us to another room because the repair would require additional time. However, they informed that changing rooms would incur an additional charge because we were checking out on the same day. I strongly disagree with this decision. From 8:30 AM until our checkout time at 12:00/12:30 PM, we were still paying guests of the hotel. The room issue was caused by a defect on the hotel’s side, and guests should not be charged extra to move rooms due to problems beyond their control. The Most Disappointing Part During check-in, we were informed that no Queen Bed Deluxe Rooms were available. However, while the maintenance team was accessing our room through the connecting room next door, we discovered that the adjacent room was vacant and equipped with a Queen Bed. If the actual reason was that the room was unavailable due to maintenance, it would have been more professional and honest to explain that from the beginning rather than simply saying all Queen Bed rooms were fully occupied. This experience has left us very disappointed. Every time we visit Melaka, this hotel has always been our preferred choice. However, after this stay, we have decided not to return. I appreciate the hospitality shown by the staff during check-in, but I sincerely hope the hotel will improve both its facilities and service standards. Thank you.

We stayed as a family of 3 and had a pleasant stay overall. The room was spacious enough for our family and we felt comfortable throughout our stay. The breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of choices, catering to both adults and children. We especially enjoyed the selection available each morning. The children’s pool was a highlight for our child and was well enjoyed. However, it would be better if there was a lifeguard on duty for added safety. We also noticed that many guests entered the lifts while still wet from the pool, making the floors slippery. During the school holiday period, the hotel was quite crowded, which contributed to this issue. Overall, we had a good experience and would consider staying again.

I had a wonderful stay at Ibis Melaka during my recent trip to Malacca. The hotel exceeded my expectations in many ways. The location is very convenient, just a short walk to Jonker Street and the historic area, which made exploring the city extremely easy. At the same time, the hotel is situated in a quieter area, so it was peaceful and comfortable at night. The rooms are clean, modern, and well-maintained. a great budget hotel find for anyone looking for a comfortable stay without breaking the bank. the room was really cozy. got upgraded for a bigger room for f.o.c and it came fully equipped with a tv, iron and kettle nor mineral water. as a muslim travelers, they also provide a clear qibla direction sticker. the aircond was superb too, really cold and perfect for a good night's sleep. the bathroom was the best part, it was clean and the water pressure was really strong which makes showering so refreshing plus most importantly, it has a bidet hose, which is a huge plus. the elevators are okay so no long waits. the staff are very friendly and welcoming also theres plenty of parking space, not to worry about finding a spot for parking. hotel location very strategic & located in the middle a city & convenience store for restaurants, i have to walk a little bit, but it’s a manageable distance. one minor downside, the room soundproofing isnt the best, i can occasionally hear noise from the hallway or outside the room. if youre a light sleeper, you might want to take note of that. overall i highly recommended for those who want comfort on a budget

This hotel is located right in Malacca's Old Town, making it easy to walk to all the attractions. The parking lot is very spacious, which is great for those traveling by car. While the hotel's exterior and lobby are beautiful, the room itself was quite ordinary. The air conditioning was noisy, and the dim lighting made the room feel rather oppressive. The shower pressure was also very low. Throughout our entire trip, the hotel service in Malaysia was consistently indifferent, a stark contrast to the excellent service we experienced in Thailand.

This hotel occasionally offers very good prices, making it a great value for money, and location is a plus! The room looked a bit old, but it was spacious and comfortable. It would be even better if the worn bedsheets & pillows were replaced with new ones. Parking is available, which is very convenient.

We had a wonderful stay at Baba House Melaka! The hotel beautifully combines Peranakan heritage with modern comfort, creating a unique and charming atmosphere. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, and the staff were always friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The location is excellent—within walking distance of Jonker Street, popular attractions, cafés, and local food spots. We especially enjoyed the beautiful courtyard and the hotel’s heritage-inspired design, which made our stay feel truly special. Thank you to the entire team at Baba House for the warm hospitality. We had a memorable family vacation and would definitely stay here again on our next visit to Melaka. Highly recommended!

Unique Experiences You Might Not Have Tried

Okay, so you’ve stuffed yourself with asam pedas, wiped out an entire tray of Nyonya kuih, and walked off the food coma at A’Famosa. Now what?

A lot of Malaysians think Melaka is just history + food (which, fair, but there’s more!). If you want to do something different, here are some cool, lesser-known experiences to check out:

🌊 Melaka River Cruise – A Chill, Romantic Ride Through Time

The melaka river cruise

🏡 Visit Kampung Morten – A Slice of Traditional Malay Life

A small mini Malaysia village in Melaka

If you’ve ever been curious about traditional Malay villages, Kampung Morten is a must-visit. This charming kampung is right in the city, with well-preserved Malay wooden houses and a beautiful riverside view. The most famous house, Villa Sentosa, is a living museum where you can see what life was like in the old days.

Nightlife & Shopping in Melaka 🛍️🌙

Okay, so you’ve had your asam pedas, taken too many photos at the Sky Tower, and maybe even freaked out at the glass floor section. Now it’s nighttime, and you’re wondering… What else can I do?

Good news: Melaka is not just a daytime city! Whether you’re into shopping, café-hopping, or just chilling with a drink, here are some of the best nighttime activities to end your day in style.

🌙 Jonker Street Night Market – Malaysia’s Most Famous Night Market

The famous Jonker Walk

Ahhh, Jonker Walk – the ultimate "makan while you jalan" experience. Every Friday to Sunday, Jonker Street transforms into a hustling, bustling night market, with food stalls, souvenir shops, live music, and random uncle selling stuff you don’t need but will probably buy anyway.

📍 Where to go? Jonker Walk, Melaka
Best time to go? 7 PM onwards (but earlier if you want to avoid crowds)
💰 Price? Free to enter (but good luck walking out without spending anything 😂)

🔥 Must-Try Food & Drinks:
✔️ Quail Egg Skewers – The little eggs on sticks are oddly addictive.
✔️ Gula Melaka Cendol – Ice-cold, sweet, refreshing = perfect after a long walk.
✔️ Fried Oyster Omelette (Orh Jian) – Crispy, eggy, seafood goodness.

🔥 Pro Tip:

● The market gets crazy packed, so go early if you hate squeezing with a crowd.

● Bring small change (RM1/RM5 notes) – some stalls don’t accept QR pay.

🎭 Encore Melaka – A Breathtaking Theatre Experience

Okay, hear me out – this is not just any performance show. Encore Melaka is one of the biggest theatre productions in Malaysia, telling the 400-year history of Melaka through crazy visual effects, water features, and even a 360-degree rotating stage.

📍 Where to go? Encore Melaka Theatre, Impression City

● Book tickets online to get better seats!

🛍️ Dataran Pahlawan & Mahkota Parade – The Shopping Malls of Melaka

The shopping malls of melaka, exterior

For those who prefer air-conditioned shopping over sweating at Jonker, Melaka has two major malls right next to each other:

✔️ Dataran Pahlawan – Trendy, modern brands (H&M, Uniqlo, etc.)
✔️ Mahkota Parade – More local boutiques, a bit more old-school

📍 Where to go? Near A’Famosa, central Melaka

💰 Price? Free to enter (but let’s be real, you’ll probably end up spending 🛒)

🍹 Hidden Cafés & Bars – Where to Chill After Dark

Melaka night lounge and bar

If you’re the kind of person who loves a quiet night out instead of noisy nightclubs, Melaka has some amazing hidden bars & cafés.

📍 Where to go?

✔️ Alto Sky Lounge – Rooftop bar with a gorgeous city view.
✔️ The Old Merchant – A speakeasy-style bar hidden in a shophouse.
✔️ The Daily Fix Café – Cozy spot famous for their pancakes & coffee.

I especially appreciated the comfortable bed and efficient layout of the room. Everything felt very new and thoughtfully designed. The staff were friendly, professional, and helpful, always greeting guests with a smile and ready to assist whenever needed. Check-in and check-out were smooth and efficient. Another highlight was the excellent facilities, including the swimming pool, gym, and the spacious lobby area. The breakfast spread was also good with a nice mix of local and international options. a great budget hotel find for anyone looking for a comfortable stay without breaking the bank. the room was really cozy. got upgraded for a bigger room for f.o.c and it came fully equipped with a tv, iron and kettle nor mineral water. as a muslim travelers, they also provide a clear qibla direction sticker. the aircond was superb too, really cold and perfect for a good night's sleep. the bathroom was the best part, it was clean and the water pressure was really strong which makes showering so refreshing plus most importantly, it has a bidet hose, which is a huge plus. the elevators are okay so no long waits. the staff are very friendly and welcoming also theres plenty of parking space, not to worry about finding a spot for parking. hotel location very strategic & located in the middle a city & convenience store for restaurants, i have to walk a little bit, but it’s a manageable distance. one minor downside, the room soundproofing isnt the best, i can occasionally hear noise from the hallway or outside the room. if youre a light sleeper, you might want to take note of that. overall i highly recommended for those who want comfort on a budget
