Melaka – our beloved historical city where every corner tells a story, every bite reminds you of home, and every weekend trip somehow ends with a food coma.

For most Malaysians, Melaka is the go-to short getaway spot. Why? Because it’s got everything we love:
Rich history – A mix of Malay sultanate, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences.
Amazing food – You haven’t lived until you’ve had authentic asam pedas here.
Chill vibes – No need to rush; just walk, eat, and repeat.

I’ve been to Melaka more times than I can count (mostly for the food, let’s be real). But over the years, I’ve realized something – many of us keep doing the same things: Jonker Walk, chicken rice balls, maybe a boat ride. But Melaka is so much more than that!

So in this guide, I’ll share not just the must-visit places but also some hidden gems and local tips to make your next trip extra special. Whether you’re a history geek, a foodie, or just someone looking for a fun weekend escape – there’s something here for you. 💙

Historical & Cultural Must-Visits

Melaka’s history is like a rojak – a mix of cultures, rulers, and stories, all blending together into something uniquely Malaysian. If you want to really feel the city’s soul, these are the places you must visit:

📍 A’Famosa & St. Paul’s Hill

The exterior of A Famosa

The OG landmark of Melaka. You’ve seen it in history books, now it’s time to climb up St. Paul’s Hill and take that classic tourist photo in front of the A’Famosa ruins. The view from the top? 10/10. The stairs? Maybe not so much.

🔥 Pro Tip: Go in the evening when it’s cooler. Also, be ready for some unexpected leg day exercise.

📍 Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum

Melaka sultanate palace, outside

Want to see how the Melaka Sultanate lived before the colonial times? This museum is a must. It’s a gorgeous wooden replica of the Sultan’s palace, filled with historical artifacts and stories about the golden days of Melaka.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you love Malay heritage and legends (Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, siapa betul?), this place is a goldmine of info.

📍 Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum

Inside of the baba nyonya heritage building

Ah, the Peranakans – one of the most fascinating cultures in Malaysia! This museum takes you inside a real Baba-Nyonya house, complete with antique furniture, intricate designs, and stories about their traditions.

🔥 Pro Tip: Take the guided tour – the stories they tell make all the difference! Also, if you love Peranakan-style OOTDs, this is the place to flex.

📍 Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Exterior of Cheng Hoon Teng temple

This is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia (founded in 1645!), and it’s still an active place of worship. Even if you’re not religious, the architecture alone is worth the visit – think intricate carvings, stunning murals, and a peaceful vibe.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you visit during Chinese festivals, the atmosphere here is super lively and beautiful.

The hotel is located in town center, close to restaurants and shopping areas. The design may be somewhat dated, but it is well-maintained and clean. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Check-in and check-out are quick and easy. The breakfast offers a wide variety of choices to suit various tastes. The beds are comfortable. Although there are two TVs, they are smaller than expected and cannot connect to personal devices. The swimming pool has beautiful views, and swimming is a good experience. The gym facilities are standard, and the exercise equipment offers breathtaking city views. The room rate is reasonable.

This hotel absolutely deserves a full five-star rating for its location, service, and ambiance! Upon arrival, the front desk thoughtfully offered a smoothie and a cold towel, instantly refreshing us from the scorching travel heat. After check-in, a staff member personally escorted us to our room, and we even received meticulous turndown service in the evening – a truly excellent experience. The location is also impeccable. Directly across the river is the famous Dutch Square (Red Square), and it's only about a 200-meter walk to Jonker Street and the night market, making it incredibly convenient for getting around. What surprised me the most was discovering, while looking through old photos, that I had unknowingly captured this hotel in a picture way back in 2012 when I first visited Malacca. To reunite with it years later as a guest feels like a rare and wonderful serendipitous encounter. Highly recommended!

Our second stop in Malaysia was The Majestic Malacca, and I was absolutely captivated by its vintage charm. The decor in the lobby, courtyard, and even the rooms was incredibly photogenic. It's a historic building itself, and the overall design, furnishings, and soft decor perfectly matched my aesthetic – I was so pleased! The hotel service was excellent, embodying the attentive spirit of British butler service. The staff were also very warm and welcoming, and the breakfast was of exceptionally high quality. All in all, I absolutely loved this hotel. The only minor drawback was the soundproofing, which isn't ideal and might bother light sleepers. However, compared to the beauty of the property and the outstanding service, it's a minor detail I can easily overlook.

The room decor was very thoughtfully done, with many small ornaments and board games, making it perfect for family travel. The living facilities are complete, with a fridge and induction cooktop, so you can buy seafood from the market and cook it yourself. The room has a great view; you can see the city at night and the sea during the day. The host was very enthusiastic, and the location is excellent, close to supermarkets, restaurants, and the pier.

I promise this review is honest and unfiltered... This was my first stay in Malacca, and I’m so grateful for this newly renovated hotel that gave us a sense of safety and comfort. We ended up extending our stay by 2 more nights because we loved Malacca so much, for a total of 4 nights. Here’s my overall feedback, hope it helps anyone coming to Malacca: - The hotel is in a great location, seemingly in a Chinese area with no run-down surroundings. It’s only about 2+ km to Jonker Street, super close—Grab rides cost just a few ringgit. Taxis are easy to get, and there are bell staff at the entrance who can help with anything you need. - The renovation is new, easily 4-star standard, and really comfortable. Clean, fresh, with all the essentials. Rooms with balconies are amazing—my partner could smoke freely, just remember to close the windows to follow hotel rules. There are waiting sofas in every floor corridor, which is really thoughtful, plus air purifiers and air coolers too. - Downstairs there’s a seafood restaurant, a Western bar, a noodle shop, a Sichuan restaurant, and even a Chaoshan beef hot pot place. We tried almost all of them, and they’re all pretty good. The fish at the seafood restaurant was excellent—pricier, but worth it for the quality. - The hotel service is the part I need to comment on. It’s inconsistent—some staff are lovely, others lack service awareness. For example, there was a Malay bellboy who was always cheerful and helped open doors every day. But the front desk staff were sometimes unenthusiastic, and calls to them weren’t always smooth. The staff at the pool also weren’t very friendly. - Breakfast is okay! The butter should really be replaced with animal-based butter 🧈! If the hotel is open to feedback, please improve the front desk and overall service to match the standard set by the friendly bellboy. Wish you all the best with your business!

This was our fifth stay at this hotel, and unfortunately, this time was very disappointing. 1. Check-in The check-in process was smooth, and the staff were polite and welcoming. I had requested a Queen Bed room instead of Twin Beds. However, I was informed that because my booking was made at the last minute (one day before check-in), only a Twin Bed room was available as all Queen Bed rooms were fully occupied. We accepted the explanation and proceeded with the room provided. 2. Room Condition Upon entering the room, the first issue we noticed was the air conditioning. Despite setting the fan speed to high, the room remained warm and the air conditioner was not cooling properly. 3. Bathroom There appeared to be a blockage beneath the sink, as water was pooling around the sink and toilet area. In addition, the shower holder was broken while we were using the shower. We chose not to complain and continued our stay. 4. Room Door & Bathroom Door The bathroom door could not be closed properly unless it was pulled and pushed firmly. The more serious issue occurred the next morning after breakfast when our room door became stuck and could not be opened. We contacted maintenance, and the team arrived to inspect the problem. From approximately 8:00 AM onwards, we were unable to access our room. Around 8:30 AM, the maintenance team requested approval from the Front Office to move us to another room because the repair would require additional time. However, they informed that changing rooms would incur an additional charge because we were checking out on the same day. I strongly disagree with this decision. From 8:30 AM until our checkout time at 12:00/12:30 PM, we were still paying guests of the hotel. The room issue was caused by a defect on the hotel’s side, and guests should not be charged extra to move rooms due to problems beyond their control. The Most Disappointing Part During check-in, we were informed that no Queen Bed Deluxe Rooms were available. However, while the maintenance team was accessing our room through the connecting room next door, we discovered that the adjacent room was vacant and equipped with a Queen Bed. If the actual reason was that the room was unavailable due to maintenance, it would have been more professional and honest to explain that from the beginning rather than simply saying all Queen Bed rooms were fully occupied. This experience has left us very disappointed. Every time we visit Melaka, this hotel has always been our preferred choice. However, after this stay, we have decided not to return. I appreciate the hospitality shown by the staff during check-in, but I sincerely hope the hotel will improve both its facilities and service standards. Thank you.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay. The room was spacious with two beds and an extra bed. It was very clean, and the breakfast was good. The only area for improvement was the breakfast seating arrangement. The staff did not consider seating elderly guests closer to the food area, even though there were nearby tables available. It would have been more convenient and thoughtful for senior guests.

The hotel tried its best, but it has definitely seen better days. We entered a room that was clean, and the beds were made perfectly. I had requested adjoining rooms on a high floor, and both requests were accommodated, which I appreciated. The fridge and phone in our room were not working, but it wasn’t a big deal—we simply used the adjoining room’s. However, I would have been quite annoyed if we hadn’t had the adjoining room to fall back on. At around S$60 per room during the school holiday weekend, it’s difficult to find another hotel in such a central location that also includes breakfast, so the value for money is hard to ignore. I would also like to commend the staff. The front desk team was welcoming, and the housekeeping team responded promptly to our requests throughout our two-day stay. The buffet breakfast was consistently topped up whenever items ran low, although the selection of pastries was limited. Overall, the staff were amazing—warm and friendly whenever we crossed paths, whether at the front desk, during housekeeping interactions, or at breakfast service. That said, there are areas that could use significant improvement. The bathrooms are overdue for renovation, with rusty corners and stubborn stains in several places. The towels have also seen better days—they were thin and had visible holes. I don't fault the staff for these issues, as they seem to be doing their best with a property that is quite run-down. I believe the hotel management needs to do a better job of updating and maintaining the facilities. Overall, this is a budget-friendly option with excellent service, though the hotel's physical condition could benefit from some much-needed upgrades.

I had a wonderful stay at Ibis Melaka during my recent trip to Malacca. The hotel exceeded my expectations in many ways. The location is very convenient, just a short walk to Jonker Street and the historic area, which made exploring the city extremely easy. At the same time, the hotel is situated in a quieter area, so it was peaceful and comfortable at night. The rooms are clean, modern, and well-maintained. I especially appreciated the comfortable bed and efficient layout of the room. Everything felt very new and thoughtfully designed. The staff were friendly, professional, and helpful, always greeting guests with a smile and ready to assist whenever needed. Check-in and check-out were smooth and efficient. Another highlight was the excellent facilities, including the swimming pool, gym, and the spacious lobby area. The breakfast spread was also good with a nice mix of local and international options. Overall, I had a very pleasant stay and would highly recommend Ibis Melaka to anyone visiting Malacca. It offers great comfort, good value, and a very convenient location. I will definitely stay here again on my next visit.

a great budget hotel find for anyone looking for a comfortable stay without breaking the bank. the room was really cozy. got upgraded for a bigger room for f.o.c and it came fully equipped with a tv, iron and kettle nor mineral water. as a muslim travelers, they also provide a clear qibla direction sticker. the aircond was superb too, really cold and perfect for a good night's sleep. the bathroom was the best part, it was clean and the water pressure was really strong which makes showering so refreshing plus most importantly, it has a bidet hose, which is a huge plus. the elevators are okay so no long waits. the staff are very friendly and welcoming also theres plenty of parking space, not to worry about finding a spot for parking. hotel location very strategic & located in the middle a city & convenience store for restaurants, i have to walk a little bit, but it’s a manageable distance. one minor downside, the room soundproofing isnt the best, i can occasionally hear noise from the hallway or outside the room. if youre a light sleeper, you might want to take note of that. overall i highly recommended for those who want comfort on a budget

Pro: A good stay at a very affordable price point. Having stayed at other hotels in this budget range, I wasn't expecting much, but the service and breakfast truly set this place apart.I was impressed by the breakfast spread.I expected a simple meal like nasi lemak since its a budget hotel, but the variety and quality were outstanding.Keep up the great work! Cons: Upon arrival, there was a unpleasent odor coming from the bathroom. However,I appreciate the staff’s quick response in sending a cleaner immediately to resolve the issue.

Asked & got adjoining rooms with daughter. Room was nicely furnished although a bit worn but adequately clean. Bed was comfortable, with a good selection of hard & soft pillows. Had a good night’s sleep. Housekeeping could do a better maintenance job: wall socket at kettle coffee/tea making area was not working, graffiti on door between rooms should be cleaned. Probably because our rooms were right at the end of a corridor, shower water pressure was inconsistent alternating between scalding hot & cold. I Other than those minor gripes a very good value

The hotel looks like it was once a very nice place to stay. Now it looks tired and in need of an update. Hall carpet very old and dirty, room carpet the same and not vacuumed, lots of hair. Stayed overnight. Service was good. Got free cendol following their social media accounts in Instagram and Facebook. Car parking is limited. Room has very small window. Might be claustrophobic to some. Sound proofing was not very good. You can hear people walking in the hallway and even the preparation in the restaurant area (We stayed in room 122 and it was the first room you see right after the door in the ground floor). Mobile data is hard to access inside the rooms as well. They do provide wifi but inside the room was quite slow. Water pressure is quite not strong as I preferred but tolerable. Breakfast has limited choices but all were good. Especially the kuihs. We got welcome drinks and snack when we checked in. Location was really goodand is easy to drive to. Jonker Walk was indeed walkable. Over-all the stay overnight was okay. But I recommend to book rooms with windows 😅

Stayed for a night in Malacca and booked a deluxe twin room, but I wasn't too happy with the room on the first floor. After speaking with the front desk staff, I paid a little extra to upgrade to an executive suite. Overall, the executive suite's facilities were fantastic. The hotel's location is also excellent, right by the river, so you can take a stroll along the river after breakfast in the morning. It's also very close to all the main attractions on Jonker Street. Highly recommended.

No internet for 2 nights 3 days, appeared to be an internal issue and not an outside issue. No water dispensers. That said, rooms are spacious and location is good.

Unique Experiences You Might Not Have Tried

Okay, so you’ve stuffed yourself with asam pedas, wiped out an entire tray of Nyonya kuih, and walked off the food coma at A’Famosa. Now what?

If you’ve ever been curious about traditional Malay villages, Kampung Morten is a must-visit. The famous Jonker Walk

I was very satisfied with my stay at Moty Hotel! The location is convenient, making it easy to visit nearby attractions and find food. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a large, very comfortable bed, and the bathtub was a real bonus. The breakfast was delicious, and the staff were friendly and provided excellent service. The hotel also has an indoor swimming pool and sauna, so the facilities are very complete, and I had a very comfortable stay. Overall, it offers great value for money, and I would definitely stay here again next time I'm in Malacca. Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The lift stop suddenly when we went to the swimming pool at level ten. Quite a scary experience, the lift stopped halfway at level 9. When the lift door open, it was not in the same level as level 9. Thanks god we were protected, nothing bad happened on that day.

The hotel looks like it was once a very nice place to stay. Now it looks tired and in need of an update. Hall carpet very old and dirty, room carpet the same and not vacuumed, lots of hair. No internet for 2 nights 3 days, appeared to be an internal issue and not an outside issue. No water dispensers. That said, rooms are spacious and location is good. It feels like management stopped caring about the quality of a once nice place.

Pro Tips & Travel Hacks 🏆

Alright, you’re now a certified Melaka explorer – but before you hit the road, here are some essential travel tips and hacks to make your trip smooth, stress-free, and way more enjoyable! 🚗💨

🕰️ Best Time to Visit

Avoid the tourist rush and don’t let the heat fry your brain – plan your visit wisely!

Season 🌞 What to Expect? 🤔
Weekends & Public Holidays Super crowded, long queues at Jonker, but a more lively atmosphere. Night market only on Fri-Sun!
Weekdays (Mon-Thu) Less crowded, easier to explore, but some places (like Jonker stalls) might be closed.
Best Months to Visit March-May & September-November (less heat, fewer tourists).

🔥 Pro Tip: If you must visit on weekends, start your day early (7-8 AM) to avoid the crowds!

🚗 Where to Park (Without Paying a Fortune)

Parking in Melaka can be painful, especially in Jonker Walk. Here’s where you can park cheaply and easily:

Parking Spot 🚗 Location 📍 Cost 💰
Dataran Pahlawan Open Parking Near the mall & A’Famosa RM3/hour
Melaka River Square Parking Walking distance to Jonker RM5 per entry
Dutch Square Street Parking Limited, but free on Sundays RM0.60 per half-hour

🔥 Pro Tip:

● Use Touch ’n Go or Parking Apps (Smart Selangor, Flexi Parking) to avoid looking for coins.

● If you’re staying overnight, book a hotel with free parking!

📲 Apps & Resources to Make Your Trip Easier

Save yourself the stress – these apps will make your Melaka trip way smoother:

🎒 What to Pack for a Melaka Trip?

Melaka is hot and involves a lot of walking, so pack smart!

Sunglasses & Sunscreen – The sun here is brutal, especially around 12-3 PM.
Mini Fan / Hat – If you’re walking around Jonker, this WILL save your life.
Power Bank – Trust me, your phone battery will die from all the Google Maps + Instagram + TikTok recording.
Wet Wipes & Tissues – Some toilets don’t provide tissues, so bring your own!
Comfy Shoes – If you’re planning to explore A’Famosa & St. Paul’s Hill, don’t wear slippers (your feet will suffer).

🔥 Pro Tip: Always carry small cash (RM1/RM5 notes) – some food stalls and local shops don’t take QR pay or cards.
