20+ Best (MUST TRY) Things to Do When You're Visiting Melaka

Gambar Profil Penulis

Melaka – our beloved historical city where every corner tells a story, every bite reminds you of home, and every weekend trip somehow ends with a food coma.

For most Malaysians, Melaka is the go-to short getaway spot. Why? Because it’s got everything we love:
Rich history – A mix of Malay sultanate, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences.
Amazing food – You haven’t lived until you’ve had authentic asam pedas here.
Chill vibes – No need to rush; just walk, eat, and repeat.

I’ve been to Melaka more times than I can count (mostly for the food, let’s be real). But over the years, I’ve realized something – many of us keep doing the same things: Jonker Walk, chicken rice balls, maybe a boat ride. But Melaka is so much more than that!

So in this guide, I’ll share not just the must-visit places but also some hidden gems and local tips to make your next trip extra special. Whether you’re a history geek, a foodie, or just someone looking for a fun weekend escape – there’s something here for you. 💙

Historical & Cultural Must-Visits

Melaka’s history is like a rojak – a mix of cultures, rulers, and stories, all blending together into something uniquely Malaysian. If you want to really feel the city’s soul, these are the places you must visit:

📍 A’Famosa & St. Paul’s Hill

The exterior of A Famosa

The OG landmark of Melaka. You’ve seen it in history books, now it’s time to climb up St. Paul’s Hill and take that classic tourist photo in front of the A’Famosa ruins. The view from the top? 10/10. The stairs? Maybe not so much.

🔥 Pro Tip: Go in the evening when it’s cooler. Also, be ready for some unexpected leg day exercise.

📍 Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum

Melaka sultanate palace, outside

Want to see how the Melaka Sultanate lived before the colonial times? This museum is a must. It’s a gorgeous wooden replica of the Sultan’s palace, filled with historical artifacts and stories about the golden days of Melaka.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you love Malay heritage and legends (Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, siapa betul?), this place is a goldmine of info.

📍 Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum

Inside of the baba nyonya heritage building

Ah, the Peranakans – one of the most fascinating cultures in Malaysia! This museum takes you inside a real Baba-Nyonya house, complete with antique furniture, intricate designs, and stories about their traditions.

🔥 Pro Tip: Take the guided tour – the stories they tell make all the difference! Also, if you love Peranakan-style OOTDs, this is the place to flex.

📍 Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

Exterior of Cheng Hoon Teng temple

This is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia (founded in 1645!), and it’s still an active place of worship. Even if you’re not religious, the architecture alone is worth the visit – think intricate carvings, stunning murals, and a peaceful vibe.

🔥 Pro Tip: If you visit during Chinese festivals, the atmosphere here is super lively and beautiful.

I recently stayed at Hatten Hotel Melaka and had a very pleasant experience. The location is excellent, right in the heart of Melaka and within walking distance to major attractions, shopping malls, and Jonker Street. It made getting around very convenient without needing much transportation. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The bed was cozy, and all the amenities were well-maintained and in good working condition. I especially enjoyed the nice city view from the room. The hotel facilities were also impressive, including the swimming pool, gym, and rooftop area, which offered a great place to relax. Breakfast had a wide variety of choices, and the food was enjoyable. Despite the crowd, the overall experience was still smooth. Service was good as well—staff were friendly, attentive, and efficient. Check-in and check-out processes were hassle-free. Overall, everything was good, and I had a very satisfying stay. I would definitely consider coming back again on my next visit to Melaka.

My mother and I took a bus directly from Yishun, Singapore to this hotel, which was incredibly convenient. The hotel is located near Airport Street, within walking distance to all the attractions. They refilled snacks and drinks every day. In the evenings, they even lit candles and essential oil diffusers in the room and on the balcony. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, and the quiet, cozy environment made for a great night's sleep. The rooftop pool has an amazing view (though I'd suggest replacing the two ice bowls with two drinks, and using disposable hand towels for better hygiene). Overall, a really excellent experience.

A small but lovely hotel. The lobby is decorated very warmly, and the color scheme is perfect for photos. We were given a room right off the elevator on our floor. The king room was spacious, but the soundproofing wasn't great; you could hear conversations from inside the room clearly in the hallway. The location is excellent, with many local traditional shops nearby, and it's only about a fifteen-minute walk to Jonker Street. I highly recommend staying here for a night to experience it.

I randomly picked this hotel on Trip.com, and since it's newly opened, all the facilities are still very new and the room is quite spacious. It's more of a serviced apartment. It's very clean, and the room comes with a mini-fridge, cups, and bowls. The front desk staff can speak simple Chinese. I noticed couplets and other auspicious decorations in the lobby, so I'm guessing the owner is Chinese. It's not too far from Jonker Street, just a 10-15 minute taxi ride, and getting a Grab here is very convenient and quick. Also, a 100 MYR deposit is required for check-in, so make sure to have that ready. You can use a credit card, but the refund takes a long time, about 30 days.

A very new hotel with very comfortable spacious rooms and is situated within the Portuguese settlement. My visit was during Christmas time so there were a lot of celebrations going on, adding to the atmosphere. The visitor before me used the fridge for durians, and I could not use the fridge throughout my stay due to the smell. The stamps were very polite to ask me about my visit however there were no immediate rectification or solutions provided. Maintenance will be an issue if not taken care of well.

A Sanctuary for the Creative Traveler. Nestled within the Citywalk, right next to The Shore Hotel and Residence, I stumbled upon this hidden gem – a secret pathway tucked away amidst the concrete jungle. It was not just a feast for the eyes but a wellspring of inspiration, captivating me and sparking creativity. Stepping onto this path felt like instantly entering a vibrant landscape painting. Lush greenery lined both sides, with towering trees forming a natural canopy that gently filtered the intense sunlight, leaving dappled light dancing on the red path below. The air was fresh and the temperature pleasant; even on a scorching summer day, a refreshing coolness permeated the area, uplifting the spirit. The winding red path harmonized beautifully, sketching a poetic route. As I walked along, a clear stream gurgled softly beside me, its gentle flow soothing to the ear. Occasionally, a few fallen leaves drifted with the current, adding to the serene and elegant atmosphere. **Vintage Streetlights Illuminate the Way Back** Along the path, vintage-style streetlights stood quietly. They weren't just guides at night but unique features during the day. Their design exuded a nostalgic charm, imbuing the entire path with a sense of 'warmth' and romance. Imagine when dusk falls and these lights are illuminated, casting a soft glow on the path, interweaving with the dancing shadows of the trees – what a dreamlike spectacle that would be! Though my busy work schedule prevented me from experiencing the night scenery, the daytime ambiance alone was enough to convey its unique allure. Strolling along, with the gentle sound of water and birdsong in my ears and the ever-changing greenery and light before my eyes, my mind and body completely relaxed, and my thoughts broadened. Whether I was brainstorming new stories or seeking creative breakthroughs, this path provided an excellent space for contemplation. It allowed me to momentarily forget the city's hustle and bustle, return to inner peace, and better capture those fleeting sparks of inspiration. **An Urban Gem Not to Be Missed** Recommendation Index: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ **Recommended for:** City dwellers seeking tranquility, creative travelers, photography enthusiasts, families with children, and couples on a date. **Best Time to Visit:** Early morning or late evening, when the light is soft, and there are fewer people, allowing for a more profound experience of its serene beauty. On the morning of March 4th, after a rain shower, the air was even fresher, and the greenery more vibrant. **Helpful Tips:** * The path is flat, suitable for walking and jogging. * Wear comfortable shoes. * Bring a camera to capture the beautiful scenery. * Keep the environment clean and protect nature. Though I missed the dazzling night view, this daytime path, with its unique tranquility, warmth, and natural beauty, has become an irreplaceable source of inspiration for me. If you, too, long for a haven in the city where your soul can rest and your thoughts can soar, then come and take a stroll here; I believe you'll fall in love with it too. ****** **The Shore Hotel and Residence's breakfast is highly recommended; you can enjoy it until noon.** One of the major highlights of choosing this hotel is its sumptuous breakfast. The restaurant offers a wide array of authentic Malaysian local delicacies, such as Nasi Lemak, various curries, fried noodles, and fried rice, allowing international guests to experience local flavors in one go, and satisfying local diners as well. What's particularly commendable is that breakfast is served until almost noon, giving guests ample time to enjoy a leisurely and fulfilling brunch without rushing. Furthermore, the diverse selection of dishes ensures that even after three consecutive days, your plate can always feature new combinations, preventing any sense of monotony.

Facilities: We booked a two-bedroom, one-living room, two-bathroom suite. The room was spacious and well-equipped. Cleanliness: The tidiness was average, and attention to detail was lacking. The water glasses had coffee and tea stains, and the toothbrush holder had toothpaste marks. Environment: The location was great. There were many restaurants right outside the hotel, and it was within walking distance of major attractions. Heroes' Square was directly behind the hotel.

We are a family of 5 adults visiting Melaka for my mom's 96th birthday celebration with her family and friends living n Melaka. We had the family suite - 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. *Reception lobby has an overwhelming smell that is disgusting. *Bathrooms: the tiles in the bathroom are moldy and falling apart with makeshift patchu. Bath towels had a funny smell and had seen better days. We had no choice but to replace the while towels with the blue-striped pool towels. * Kitchen - a skeleton setup with sink, microwave, fridge, kettle and coffee maker. Basic amenities like one would expect in a kitchen such as stovetop, dish washing liquid, kitchen hand towels, crockery and utensils are missing. The microwave is filthy. We have to use the white hand towels that guests would normally use in the bathroom to dry our hands in the kitchen. We had to request room service to clean the filthy microwave, provide plates and utensils for us to eat out take-out food, along with dish washing liquid to wash our dirty dishes. Pictures speak a thousand words. Hotel is connected to a Mall - Shore that is deserted. Foot traffic is at its all time low. Mall is dimly lit ... a HUGE contrast to AEON. I would not recommend this hotel. Sorry.

This Ibis is much better than those in China. The room is clean, and the bedding is also quite clean. The breakfast is relatively rich, though the taste might not suit Chinese palates. The front desk staff doesn't speak Chinese, and some only speak Malay, not English. The hotel's location is excellent, very close to Jonker Street, and it only takes a few minutes to walk to the Dutch Square (Red Square), which is very convenient.

I saw some negative reviews before booking and was quite worried, but I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived! It looked exactly like the photos. The room was huge 😍 and beautifully decorated. The king-size bed was super comfortable. The air conditioning was on all night, and it felt like sleeping in an ice cave, so cold! 😆 We were all very satisfied 😊 I really liked the restaurant's ambiance, though the food was just average. Some reviews also mentioned slow check-in at the front desk, but we arrived around 3:30 and were checked in very quickly. No long waits as some reviews suggested!

Smoke smell in the room and toilet, although this is a non smoking room. We have to use our own air freshener. Better bring own towels as the towels provided are quite old. Room is spacious. There is a ceiling fan in the family room, as the aircon is not cold enough. Breakfast is decent. However, I would suggest hotel to provide jam and butter in individual pack instead of in big bowls. It is not very hygiene for everyone to use the same spoon to scoop and spread it on the bread near the toast area. The hotel is about 10 mins drive to Aeon mall. Ample car park space behind the hotel and it is free. The lift is quite old and looks like going to break down anytime when you are inside.

The room was a bit old-fashioned. The window was small and the bathroom sink was tiny, though the shower was decent. Breakfast was just okay and required walking to a separate building. It was also very crowded, with many tour groups. There's no sidewalk directly outside the hotel, so you need to be careful when walking out. It's not close to the main attractions, so if you're not big on walking, you might want to think twice before booking.

I am truly pleased with the Grand Swiss-Belhotel Melaka, Malaysia for their warm hospitality and very clean accommodations. The staff went above and beyond to extend their assistance, even helping me with important matters such as bank transfers—going so far as to use their own personal accounts to ensure everything was taken care of smoothly. A special appreciation goes to Mr. Rifkarl, the security personnel, for his remarkable support and genuine care, which truly reflects the hotel’s commitment to excellent service. Okay, let’s be honest – the real reason most of us go to Melaka? THE FOOD. 😍

Melaka’s food scene is legendary. Spicy, tangy, sweet, and full of history, every dish here tells a story. If you’re not leaving Melaka with a full stomach and a packed container of kuih for the drive home, you’re doing it wrong.

Here are the must-eat foods (with insider tips on where to get the best ones!):

🔥 Asam Pedas Power – The Sourest, Spiciest, Best Thing Ever

This experience is a testament to the dedication of the entire team, making my stay not only comfortable but also memorable. I am deeply grateful and will surely recommend this hotel to others.

Unique Experiences You Might Not Have Tried

Okay, so you’ve stuffed yourself with asam pedas, wiped out an entire tray of Nyonya kuih, and walked off the food coma at A’Famosa. Now what?

A lot of Malaysians think Melaka is just history + food (which, fair, but there’s more!). If you want to do something different, here are some cool, lesser-known experiences to check out:

🌊 Melaka River Cruise – A Chill, Romantic Ride Through Time

The melaka river cruise

🏡 Visit Kampung Morten – A Slice of Traditional Malay Life

A small mini Malaysia village in Melaka

If you’ve ever been curious about traditional Malay villages, Kampung Morten is a must-visit. This charming kampung is right in the city, with well-preserved Malay wooden houses and a beautiful riverside view. The most famous house, Villa Sentosa, is a living museum where you can see what life was like in the old days.

Nightlife & Shopping in Melaka 🛍️🌙

Okay, so you’ve had your asam pedas, taken too many photos at the Sky Tower, and maybe even freaked out at the glass floor section. Now it’s nighttime, and you’re wondering… What else can I do?

Good news: Melaka is not just a daytime city! Whether you’re into shopping, café-hopping, or just chilling with a drink, here are some of the best nighttime activities to end your day in style.

🌙 Jonker Street Night Market – Malaysia’s Most Famous Night Market

The famous Jonker Walk

Ahhh, Jonker Walk – the ultimate "makan while you jalan" experience. Every Friday to Sunday, Jonker Street transforms into a hustling, bustling night market, with food stalls, souvenir shops, live music, and random uncle selling stuff you don’t need but will probably buy anyway.

📍 Where to go? Jonker Walk, Melaka
Best time to go? 7 PM onwards (but earlier if you want to avoid crowds)
💰 Price? Free to enter (but good luck walking out without spending anything 😂)

🔥 Must-Try Food & Drinks:
✔️ Quail Egg Skewers – The little eggs on sticks are oddly addictive.
✔️ Gula Melaka Cendol – Ice-cold, sweet, refreshing = perfect after a long walk.
✔️ Fried Oyster Omelette (Orh Jian) – Crispy, eggy, seafood goodness.

🔥 Pro Tip:

● The market gets crazy packed, so go early if you hate squeezing with a crowd.

● Bring small change (RM1/RM5 notes) – some stalls don’t accept QR pay.

🎭 Encore Melaka – A Breathtaking Theatre Experience

performance in the encore melaka

📍 Where to go? Encore Melaka Theatre, Impression City

● Book tickets online to get better seats!

🛍️ Dataran Pahlawan & Mahkota Parade – The Shopping Malls of Melaka

The shopping malls of melaka, exterior

For those who prefer air-conditioned shopping over sweating at Jonker, Melaka has two major malls right next to each other:

✔️ Dataran Pahlawan – Trendy, modern brands (H&M, Uniqlo, etc.)
✔️ Mahkota Parade – More local boutiques, a bit more old-school

📍 Where to go? Near A’Famosa, central Melaka
Best time to go? Anytime (but the sales are best during weekends!)
💰 Price? Free to enter (but let’s be real, you’ll probably end up spending 🛒)

🔥 Pro Tip:

● If you want to buy local souvenirs (Gula Melaka, Dodol, Kuih), there are plenty of shops inside Dataran Pahlawan.

🍹 Hidden Cafés & Bars – Where to Chill After Dark

Melaka night lounge and bar

If you’re the kind of person who loves a quiet night out instead of noisy nightclubs, Melaka has some amazing hidden bars & cafés.

📍 Where to go?

✔️ Alto Sky Lounge – Rooftop bar with a gorgeous city view.
✔️ The Old Merchant – A speakeasy-style bar hidden in a shophouse.
✔️ The Daily Fix Café – Cozy spot famous for their pancakes & coffee.

There is a ceiling fan in the family room, as the aircon is not cold enough. Breakfast is decent. However, I would suggest hotel to provide jam and butter in individual pack instead of in big bowls. Very nice hotel with good customer service. Our staycation in Melaka went well. The food also delicious with variety of choice. Strategic hotel's location near Menara Taming Sari, Pahlawan Walk and Mahkota Parade. Very recommended. Cons: Did not provide private parking. However, got many street parking nearby.

It was good, considering it's very cheap. Food could be a bit better. But for the price, it's really ok. But, please, clean the air conditioner. It's dusty, taking so much time to the room to be cold

This experience is a testament to the dedication of the entire team, making my stay not only comfortable but also memorable. I am deeply grateful and will surely recommend this hotel to others.

The problem here is the limited car parks. Lucky I'm able to parked near to hotel. Also, there's a mosque VERY near the hotel. So for non Muslim like me will get an early wake up call...

The water pressure in the bathroom was quite weak, which made showering uncomfortable. Also, the room did not provide slippers, which would have been a nice basic amenity.

This was my second time staying at this hotel. It has a perfect riverside location in the Melaka town area, making it easy to explore nearby attractions and famous eateries. The room was quiet, spacious, and comfortable, with a great window view. Overall, it would be even better if a water dispenser were provided.

🕰️ Best Time to Visit

Avoid the tourist rush and don’t let the heat fry your brain – plan your visit wisely!

Season 🌞 What to Expect? 🤔
Weekends & Public Holidays Super crowded, long queues at Jonker, but a more lively atmosphere. Night market only on Fri-Sun!
Weekdays (Mon-Thu) Less crowded, easier to explore, but some places (like Jonker stalls) might be closed.
Best Months to Visit March-May & September-November (less heat, fewer tourists).

🔥 Pro Tip: If you must visit on weekends, start your day early (7-8 AM) to avoid the crowds!

🚗 Where to Park (Without Paying a Fortune)

Parking in Melaka can be painful, especially in Jonker Walk. Here’s where you can park cheaply and easily:

Sunglasses & Sunscreen – The sun here is brutal, especially around 12-3 PM.
Mini Fan / Hat – If you’re walking around Jonker, this WILL save your life.
Power Bank – Trust me, your phone battery will die from all the Google Maps + Instagram + TikTok recording.
Wet Wipes & Tissues – Some toilets don’t provide tissues, so bring your own!
