20+ Best Things to Do When You're Visiting Penang

Gambar Profil Penulis

If you haven’t been to Penang, bro... what are you doing with your life? This little island (and its mainland twin, Seberang Perai) is literally one of the best places to makan, lepak, and explore in Malaysia. Whether you’re a foodie, a history nerd, or just someone looking for a chill weekend getaway, Penang has something for everyone.

Imagine this: Waking up to the smell of freshly fried Char Kuey Teow, spending your day wandering through heritage streets covered in street art, and ending the night with a sunset by the beach while munching on some Lok Lok. Sounds like a dream? Well, in Penang, this is just an average Tuesday.

Why Penang?

Best Food in Malaysia (Don’t @ me) 🍜 – If you can’t decide between Penang Laksa or Nasi Kandar, the answer is both.

Rich Heritage & Culture 🏛️ – Where else can you find colonial mansions, Chinese clan houses, and temples all within walking distance?

Affordable & Easy to Explore 💰 – A full meal can still cost under RM10 (if you know where to go), and walking around George Town feels like stepping back in time.

Beautiful Nature & Adventure 🌿 – Hike up Penang Hill, chill at Monkey Beach, or zipline through the rainforest at ESCAPE.

So, whether you're coming for a food-hunting trip, a history lesson, or just to jalan-jalan, Penang will always welcome you with open arms and a plate of something sedap.

Foodie Heaven – What to Eat in Penang 🍜

Alright, let’s get to the real reason most Malaysians visit Penang: THE FOOD. If you leave this island hungry, you’re doing it wrong. Penang’s food scene is legendary, and if you don’t believe me, just look at the number of cars with KL and Johor plates parked at famous makan spots every weekend.

Here’s a cheat sheet of must-try Penang dishes and where to get them. Save this so you don’t waste time Googling!

1. Penang Char Kuey Teow (CKT) 🔥

Delicious famous Penang char kuay teow

The GOAT of noodle dishes. Flat rice noodles stir-fried over high heat with prawns, Chinese sausage, eggs, and cockles, all infused with that legendary wok hei (smoky wok flavor).
📍 Where to Try:

Tiger Char Kuey Teow (Ping Hooi Cafe, George Town) – Smoky, slightly wetter style.

Siam Road Char Kuey Teow – Long queue, but worth it.

Lorong Selamat Char Kuey Teow – Infamous aunty with the red beret, but the prawns are huge.

👉 Pro Tip: If the cook isn’t sweating and flipping the wok like a mad scientist, the CKT won’t be shiok.

2. Penang Asam Laksa 🍜

Delicious famous Penang asam laksa

A tangy, spicy, and umami-packed noodle soup made with flaked mackerel, tamarind broth, mint leaves, and a dollop of prawn paste (hae ko).
📍 Where to Try:

Air Itam Asam Laksa – The most famous, right near Kek Lok Si.

Penang Road Famous Laksa – Slightly milder but still power.

Pasar Air Itam Laksa – Extra thick broth.

👉 Pro Tip: If your laksa doesn’t make you sweat and sniffle a bit, it’s not legit.

3. Nasi Kandar 🍛

Delicious famous Penang Nasi Kandar

Imagine a mountain of fragrant white rice drenched in different curry gravies (also called ‘banjir’ style). You can mix and match ayam goreng, beef rendang, sotong, telur ikan, and more.
📍 Where to Try:

Hameediyah (Est. 1907) – One of the oldest and still one of the best.

Nasi Kandar Line Clear – Open 24 hours, makan like a true Penangite.

Deen Maju – Long queues, but the ayam goreng is next level.

👉 Pro Tip: Ask for "kuah campur banjir" (mixed curry flood) for the ultimate experience.

4. Penang Rojak 🍏

Delicious famous Penang Rojak Buah

A unique fruit and vegetable salad drenched in thick, dark prawn paste and topped with crushed peanuts. Sweet, salty, tangy, crunchy – it’s a party in your mouth.
📍 Where to Try:

Hock Seng Rojak (Gurney Drive) – Iconic, been around forever.

Padang Brown Rojak – Lesser known, but equally sedap.

👉 Pro Tip: If the sauce doesn’t stick to your teeth, it’s not real Penang rojak.

5. Pasembur 🦑

Delicious famous Penang Pasembor

Think of this as the Indian-Muslim cousin of rojak – a plate of crispy prawn fritters, squid, tofu, and cucumbers drenched in a slightly spicy, nutty-sweet sauce.
📍 Where to Try:

Gurney Drive Pasembur – The OG.

Padang Kota Lama (Esplanade Food Court) – Great seaside vibes.

👉 Pro Tip: Order extra prawn fritters if you want that extra crunch!

6. Apom Manis 🍯

Delicious famous Penang apam balik

A thin, crispy-edged pancake with a soft, fluffy center, often with banana or sweet corn inside. Perfect for dessert or a light snack.
📍 Where to Try:

Apom Guan (Burmah Road) – Uncle Guan has been making these for over 40 years!

Penang Road Apom Manis – A classic roadside stall experience.

👉 Pro Tip: Eat it hot. The crispy edges won’t be the same if you tapau for later.

Heritage & Culture – A Walk Through Time 🏛️

Penang isn’t just about food (though let’s be real, that’s 90% of the reason we come). It’s also one of the most historically rich places in Malaysia, with heritage buildings, vibrant street art, and hidden cultural gems waiting to be explored. Walking around George Town feels like traveling through time—one moment you’re admiring British colonial architecture, the next you’re stepping into a century-old Chinese clan house or a bustling Little India filled with the aroma of spices.

If you love history, old-school vibes, or just want Instagrammable spots that make you look cultured, here are some must-visit places:

1. George Town Street Art 🎨

the famous street painting in penang of a little girl and her brother riding a bicycle

Walking around George Town is like being in a giant open-air museum. The street art here is world-famous, with murals that mix history, humor, and daily Malaysian life. Some of them even interact with real objects—like a kid reaching for an actual bicycle.

📍 Where to Find It:

Lebuh Armenian – The most iconic artworks (e.g., "Little Children on a Bicycle").

Lebuh Ah Quee – The famous “Boy on a Motorbike.”

Gat Lebuh Chulia – The cute cat murals!

👉 Pro Tip: Rent a bicycle (RM10-20 per day) or use the LinkBike app to cycle around easily. Walking is fun, but Penang sun? 🥵 No joke.

2. Pinang Peranakan Mansion 🏡

the interior of penang peranakan house

If you’ve ever watched The Little Nyonya (or if your mom forced you to watch it), you know how beautiful Peranakan culture is. This mansion gives you a glimpse into the lives of rich Baba-Nyonya families, complete with intricate antique furniture, gold decorations, and beautifully carved wooden doors.

📍 Where: 29 Church Street, George Town
💰 Entrance Fee: RM25
Opening Hours: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM

👉 Fun Fact: This house was actually used as a filming location for TV dramas. So yes, you can pretend you're in a period drama here.

3. Khoo Kongsi Clan House 🏯

the front of the Khoo Kongsi Clan house

The Khoo family must have been seriously loaded because this is one of the most stunning clan houses in Malaysia. It’s a grand Chinese temple and ancestral hall, complete with dragon carvings, detailed murals, and a hidden underground chamber (for secret meetings back in the day).

📍 Where: Cannon Square, George Town
💰 Entrance Fee: RM20
Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

👉 Pro Tip: Visit at night during Chinese New Year – the lanterns and performances make the whole place magical.

4. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (The Blue Mansion) 💙

The front of Cheong Fatt Tze house

This is one of the most famous heritage buildings in Penang, known for its vibrant blue walls and unique mix of Eastern and Western architecture. It was built by Cheong Fatt Tze, a Chinese tycoon who basically lived like a king. Now, it’s a boutique hotel where you can stay if you want that old-money experience.

📍 Where: 14 Leith Street, George Town
💰 Entrance Fee: RM25 (guided tour)
Opening Hours: 11:00 AM & 2:00 PM (Tours only)

👉 Pro Tip: If you don’t want to pay for the tour, just book a night here! Then you can take all the aesthetic photos you want.

5. Kek Lok Si Temple 🏯

Kek Lok Si temple lit up in the night

One of the largest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, Kek Lok Si is a must-visit. It has a giant bronze statue of Kuan Yin (the Goddess of Mercy), a beautiful pagoda, and hundreds of Buddha statues. The temple is on a hill, so you also get a pretty epic view of Penang from up here.

📍 Where: Air Itam
💰 Entrance Fee: Free (but RM6 for the pagoda and RM3 for the incline lift)
Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM

👉 Best Time to Visit: At night during Chinese New Year—the whole temple lights up beautifully.

6. Fort Cornwallis 🏰

Outside of Fort Cornwallis

If you want to flex your history knowledge, this is the place. This 18th-century fort was built by the British East India Company to defend against pirates (yes, actual pirates). It still has original cannons, thick stone walls, and a moat.

📍 Where: Padang Kota Lama
💰 Entrance Fee: RM10
Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM

👉 Pro Tip: Come in the late afternoon to avoid the heat, and then walk over to Esplanade for a relaxing evening by the sea.

Quick Heritage & Culture Guide 🏛️

Place Why Visit? Tips
George Town Street Art Famous murals, interactive art, best IG spots Rent a bike for easy exploring

Ascott Gurney Penang exceeded my expectations in terms of comfort, cleanliness, and overall experience. What made the stay even more memorable was the exceptional service from Mr. Khoo Min Jie. He went above and beyond to ensure everything was well taken care of. His attentiveness, professionalism, and warm hospitality truly stood out. Staff like him are a great asset to the hotel. Thank you for making my stay such a wonderful one.

Let me start with the positives. Because I was worried about ghosts, I booked a room in the newer Victory Wing. I told the front desk I trouble sleeping, and they gave me a middle room on the 9th floor. The room had high ceilings and a sea view, which was quite comfortable. The housekeeping was also good; they turned down the bed in the afternoon, leaving two bottles of water by the bedside. The minibar was complimentary, and cleaning was quite frequent. The drainage in my bathroom wasn't great; the water would overflow my feet if it was a bit strong. I didn't report it, but housekeeping still came to clean it, possibly as part of their routine. The lobby and restaurant staff were all quite nice too. Now for the negatives, which mainly centered around the restaurant. As a five-star hotel, it's unacceptable that there were cockroaches at the noodle station! I truly can't accept this. Malaysians might be more laid-back, but this is a hotel hygiene issue that I believe shouldn't be taken lightly. I don't even want to go into how disgusting cockroaches are. Also, the glasses were always dirty; they seemed to wash them and use them on the spot. Couldn't a hotel of this caliber prepare more glasses?

The hotel's location is excellent, very close to the Clan Jetties and the Street Art, both within walking distance. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly welcoming, smiling as they opened car doors and helped with our luggage, even bringing it all the way to our room. The hotel's interior cleanliness was also exceptional, spotlessly clean everywhere. Most importantly, I left my passport and a sum of money in the hotel's safe. I only realized it when I reached Ipoh, so I quickly called the hotel. The staff immediately took care of it, retrieved my belongings, and kept them at the front desk. When I returned, not a single penny was missing, not even a single piece of paper. I highly recommend this fantastic hotel to all my fellow countrymen.

The room was spacious and clean. The staff were attentive and prompt in attending to our needs. They served us more bottles of water in our room on request. We had a pleasant welcome with a drink and ice cream. The hotel is just beside the Gurney Plaza, which makes it convenient for shopping and dining. Highly recommended.

Fantastic service at this small old style heritage hotel. We had a small problem with our room which disturbed our sleep and on the second day the staff immediately tried to rectify the issue, and eventually upgraded us to another property on the same day. Wonderful!

I love this heritage house so much that we have to stay a few nights here. The front desk person told us that this heritage house was actually owned by one of the Royal family previously, and it was recently sold in fact just last mth to a local business man. The entire house was well maintained and all the rooms are spacious with fully functional amenities you needed. The welcome drink was really nice, they change every morning with fresh chill drinks. Every corner of the house is a great spot for photos. Quite worth the stay.

A bit far from Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang, where the kids love to play, but very close to the core area of Penang. Suitable for young adults and seniors. Breakfast was pretty good, and the kids absolutely loved the pool. It's not far from central Penang, so shopping and dining are convenient. The melodious call to prayer from the mosque outside lulled us to sleep. Cons: The air conditioning in the lobby was too cold. You could see the distant Penang Bridge, but where was the bay view? :)

The hotel is a bit old, but I actually found the bed quite comfortable, unlike some reviews that mentioned sagging. It's in a great location for exploring; just a short walk around the corner and you'll find the colorful shophouses and plenty of local snacks. You'll need to grab a ride to get to Mural Street and the Peranakan Museum. Breakfast was a bit weak; you have to cook your own noodles, and when I went at 9:30 AM, they said they had run out of eggs, which the hotel definitely needs to improve on. Other services were pretty good though.

The room was very clean and spacious, not noisy, the pool was lovely and refreshing after a hot days site seeing...location wise it's a little away from the main tourist area but it's only 5 ringit in a grab to Chulia St and some of the eateries across the street from the hotel and massage shops are far better than the tourist areas, so I thought it was a great location. The staff I have to say are an absolute credit to the company, they were very helpful, friendly, patient and assured and were accommodating with a few of my non-standard requests, I will stay here for sure when I come back to Penang

Location is good, right in the centre & within walking distance to eateries & shopping. Close nearby there’s the Hin Depot, it’s like a weekend flea market. Hotel Service was great, the room that i booked was rather small, city view facing but sun was strong and day time, was abit hot as room window facing the sun. Going green is good, and water dispenser is provided on every floor for our refill. Can i suggest the bottles provided to have a wider opening as when refilling was rather difficult to avoid any spillage, especially taking the hot water Hotel deco is very festive.

Highly recommended, a great value-for-money option in George Town city center. The hotel staff are really friendly and welcoming. I arrived early and they allowed me to check in ahead of time, which let me get some much-needed rest. In the lobby, there's complimentary iced water and chilled drinks available, and when it was hot, a staff member proactively offered me water. The porter also took my luggage directly to my room. Overall, a very pleasant experience. The room was spacious, with a view overlooking George Town city center. The bathroom was a bit older but still perfectly functional and very clean. It's incredibly convenient here; the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and the street art area are only about a five-minute taxi ride away. I also slept very comfortably at night. Highly recommended, I definitely made the right choice.

The rooms in this 4-star hotel are incredibly spacious and comfortable—it definitely lived up to my expectations. The highlight for me was the location; it's just a 6-minute walk to Gurney Plaza. This was a huge plus because I didn't have to walk far in the heat to find a place with AC to spend a hot afternoon. The room is well-equipped with everything you need. It's clear the management is very thoughtful, providing a solid, reliable stay for travelers at an affordable price. The decor isn't outdated; it has a unique character to it. If you're looking for value for money, this is a great choice. It’s also surrounded by plenty of food options while remaining peacefully quiet.

Great location. Easy access to the waterfront and eateries. Love the breakfast spread and the knick knacks in our room. First time seeing a water filter in our room - good eco friendly hotel. However it could be better if the hotel could fix the shower door as it could not close properly, causing water to overflow.

This was my third time booking with this hotel. Unfortunately! When were about to leave in the evening heading to the airport to catch my wife's flight, the lift broke down at level 5. I tried call out for help and contact phone numbers posted on the wall of the lift, but all went without luck. I tried to press the emergency button in the lift, but it was hard to press to release alarm.. We waived at the CCTV but no action at all. After a while a guest heard us and went immediately down to report to the reception. The service guys came up and advised us to stay calm and wait to lift service to arrive because they were not able to open the doors. After 1 hour the service man arrived and opened the door for us so we rushed to book a grab to the airport immediately. Finally we have arrived at 9:00 pm before the flight at 10:30pm. Thank god that Malaysia gentel man heard the dying alarm sound and went to investigate, otherwise we would have been stuck the whole night and lost the flight. From the bottom of our heart, thanks to that Malaysian hero. For the hotel management, you need to check your CCTV, and regular service of lifts and contact number for immediate support and pickup phone calls. I will never book at this hotel again.

I have been a regular customer since 2018. Its always my 1st choice to check in whenever i travel to georgetown. Even there were still times when i got rooms that were poorly maintained. But this time everything was good, the room was clean as well as the bathroom. The only downsides are no qiblat signage and extra pillow in the room which was provided before. Also i was lucky to have had the parking this time which always became the big issue before. Its very limited esp during holiday season by first come first served basis. Credit is given to the male receptionist (short hair) that attended me on friday 30th afternoon. He is very polite and kind. Afterall, im satisfied and will surely come again

It's not the first time we stayed at this hotel and we were not lucky with our room this time. We booked the Queen room but the room was not big enough for the queen bed. Only one bedside table and you had to climb onto the bed to get in., no room on one side. There was no room for people to pass by each other. The room size was for a single person. The shower was not enclosed and the floor got saturated after use and no slippers were provided. The only bathroom light was covered by the shower curtain so you wash in the dark. Poor light for shaving. No hot water at the sink for shaving. We chose the room because it had a window in the photo but it turned out to be just for ventilation. No view, no sunshine, just the adjacent room window a metre away. No toiletries apart from an all-in-one soap bottle in the shower. No hand towels, just the large one. TV did not work. The breakfast was not great, little variation of the same food every other day. No cereal because there wasn't any milk. Powdered cream for mud coffee and tea. No real butter for toast. And now the good things. Location, because they could not mess that up. Even a tent would sell well with the location. Excellent cleaning team, I watched the working in the lobby area. I will not stay here again. Take my advice, pay a little more for another hotel in the location and enjoy your stay. Usually, the management replies to customers opinions with a standard offer of apology and promises to do better. I don't see much response to previous reviews. Perhaps they will respond to this one. Watch this space.

We had a fantastic stay at Loop on Leith during our family trip to Penang. Traveling with a young child can be tricky, but this hotel made it easy. The location is absolutely perfect for exploring George Town on foot, as we were just a short walk away from the famous street art and the best hawker food on Chulia Street. The room was modern, incredibly clean, and surprisingly quiet at night, which was essential for our kid’s sleep. We loved the industrial-chic design and found the staff to be very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Even though the rooms in this heritage area can be cozy, the layout was efficient and didn't feel cramped for us. Hidden Gems – The “Aiyoh, You Sure You Never Been Here?” Spots 🧐

Penang’s got its famous spots, but real pros know the best places are the hidden gems. You know, the ones that don’t show up in every tourist guide but make you feel like you’ve uncovered a secret. Whether it’s a hidden café, a quiet beach, or an eerie abandoned site, these places are 100% worth visiting (and flexing about to your friends).

1. Suffolk House – The "Downton Abbey" of Penang 🏡

The interior of a restaurant

If you want to sip tea like British royalty, this 18th-century colonial mansion is where you do it. Built by Captain Francis Light (Penang’s founder), Suffolk House is one of the few remaining Anglo-Indian style bungalows in Malaysia. It’s so fancy that it’s been used for film shoots and even hosted the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!

📍 Where: Air Itam
💰 Entrance Fee: RM20 (tour included)
Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

👉 Pro Tip: Book high tea here (RM65 per pax) and enjoy scones, sandwiches, and cakes like you’re in England.

2. Penang War Museum – Malaysia’s Most Haunted Spot? 👻

Penang Memorial museum entrance

Love ghost stories? This WWII-era British fortress turned museum is known for being one of the creepiest places in Asia. Back in the day, Japanese soldiers occupied this place, and let’s just say some dark things went down here. The underground tunnels, prison cells, and execution chambers still remain. Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, the historical value is insane.

📍 Where: Batu Maung
💰 Entrance Fee: RM20
Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

👉 Pro Tip: Come for the night tour (if you dare). Rumor has it some people never finish the tour... 👀

3. The Floating Mosque – Serenity on the Sea 🕌

Penang floating mosque

Ever seen a mosque floating on water? The Masjid Terapung is a stunning sight, especially at sunset when the sky turns golden and reflects beautifully on the sea. It’s not actually floating (there are stilts under it), but it sure looks like it.

📍 Where: Tanjung Bungah
💰 Entrance Fee: Free
Best Time to Visit: Sunset 🌅

👉 Pro Tip: Non-Muslims can visit outside prayer times, but dress modestly.

4. Penang Hill’s Secret Canopy Walk – No Crowds, Just Nature 🌳

The canopy walk in Penang Hill

Most people go to Penang Hill and just hang around at the main viewing deck. But if you walk a little further, you’ll find an amazing hidden canopy walk in the jungle. It’s completely FREE, with zero crowds and peaceful vibes.

📍 Where: 15-minute walk from The Habitat, Penang Hill
💰 Entrance Fee: Free
Best Time to Visit: Morning (before it gets hot)

👉 Pro Tip: Bring a small picnic and chill here with a view of the jungle.

5. Batu Ferringhi’s Hidden "Secret Beach" 🏝️

Sandy beaches with lots of trees for shade

Batu Ferringhi is famous, but did you know there’s a secret beach just 10 minutes away? It’s called Pantai Pasir Panjang, and unlike the main beaches, this one is peaceful, clean, and usually empty. It feels like your own private island.

📍 Where: Near Tropical Spice Garden (follow the jungle path)
💰 Entrance Fee: Free
Best Time to Visit: Morning or late afternoon

👉 Pro Tip: Pack some drinks and snacks—there are zero stalls here, just pure nature.

6. Penang’s “Abandoned” Jetty – Instagram Gold 📸

One of the most famous "abandoned" jettys in Penang

This rustic, broken-down jetty is one of the best hidden photography spots in Penang. The old wooden planks, the endless sea view, and the peaceful vibes make this a must-visit for photographers and content creators. It’s like a movie scene from an old fishing village.

📍 Where: Near Pantai Jerejak, Bayan Lepas
💰 Entrance Fee: Free
Best Time to Visit: Golden hour (5:30 PM – 7:00 PM)

👉 Pro Tip: Be careful when walking on the old planks—some are a bit wobbly.
