What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you activate a cellular plan in China without a physical SIM card. It’s built right into your device—be it a smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet.
With eSIM, you can easily switch between network providers or data plans without physically changing the SIM card. This is especially helpful for travelers who want to avoid roaming fees by using a local data plan during their stay in China.
Must-Have Apps for Travelers in China
Having the right apps in China can make a huge difference. Due to restrictions on apps like Google Maps and WhatsApp, local apps are essential for navigation, communication, and services. Also, Chinese payment methods like Alipay and WeChat Pay may feel unfamiliar, but getting used to them before your trip will help you stay connected and enjoy local conveniences.
| Category | Recommended Apps |
|---|
Payment Apps | Alipay, WeChat Pay |
Transport Apps | Didi, Baidu Maps, China Railway 12306 |
Navigation Apps | Baidu Maps, Gaode Maps |
Translation | Baidu Translate |
Food Delivery/Discovery | Meituan, Ele.me, Dianping |
Attraction Booking | Trip.com |
Train Booking | Trip.com |
Communication | WeChat, QQ |
Other Useful Local Apps | Taobao, JD.com |
💡 Pro Tip: Most apps in China are in Chinese. If possible, set the app language to English. You can use international credit cards with Alipay or WeChat Pay in some cases. Always download your necessary apps before arrival, and activate your eSIM as soon as you land for smooth connectivity throughout your trip.

How to use China eSIM - 5 steps to get connected
Before setting up: Check whether your phone can use eSIM
Mobile phones vary from country to country. Please make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM before purchasing. This ensures a seamless experience when activating and managing your eSIM, allowing you to enjoy the benefits without any compatibility issues.
Check the compatible models below. 👇
Step 1: Choose the best eSIM plan
Step 2: Select the data package
Step 3: Receive activation email
You’ll receive the eSIM activation email and a QR code with installation instructions. You must have a network to install eSIM. Please ensure that there is available WiFi or mobile data before installation.
Step 4: Add your eSIM
Set as the instructions: System - Settings - Cellular (iOS) / SIM Card Management (Andriod) - add a Cellular Plan (iOS) / SIM Card (Android) - agree to download Cellular Plan (iOS) or SIM Card (Android), and then scan the QR code for activation (or enter SM-DP +Address and Activation Code manually).
Step 5: Connect the Internet
- After the download is successful, close the primary card if you already have. Enable the Cellular Plan (iOS) or SIM Card (Android).

How to close?
Open the open Cellular (iOS) or SIM Card Management (Android), and click to turn off the Cellular Plan (iOS) or SIM Card (Android) (the steps of enabling and disabling are the same).
Note
- If there is no network after enabling, please turn on the airplane mode and then turn off or restart the phone.
- The eSIM can only be installed one time by one phone or one device. If removed, it cannot be added again and must be purchased again.
- If there are problems such as activation failure, please contact Customer Service without deleting the eSIM.

China eSIM User Reviews
There are no problems at all in using it. The setup is easy, the signal is good, and the price is cheap. It was really helpful this time.
It's a great product that works like a "VPN" service, so you can access all Western apps. The only problem is that in the end, there is an issue with payment apps like Alipay and WeChat, and you need a local WiFi connection to complete the payment.
After canceling another eSIM that didn't work for me in China, this one worked fine. It worked as expected, and I had seamless access during my stay.
