As a Malaysian traveller in Chongqing, I was truly excited to experience the Chongqing Metro. Similar to the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy yet highly efficient, with breathtaking views especially when crossing the Yangtze River. It’s one of the best ways to explore the city’s shopping areas, food spots, and cultural highlights, while avoiding the heavy traffic on the roads.

Using mobile apps and route planners makes navigation simple, especially with a reliable eSIM for China. This guide will cover tickets, major stations, route tips, peak travel times, and local etiquette—so you’ll feel confident even if you don’t speak the language.

Whether you’re heading from the airport to Jiefangbei or figuring out which line takes you to Ciqikou, this Chongqing Metro guide has got you covered. Let’s get started!

🗺️ Overview of Chongqing Metro & Metro Lines

peta Metro Chongqing

If you’re a Malaysian traveller used to the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Chongqing Metro both fascinating and efficient. This guide will help you navigate the system with ease and confidence.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Chongqing Metro has 10 lines, covering everything from the bustling city centre to the outer districts. It’s even connected to the airport, making it a convenient option for travellers. Known for its scenic routes—especially the sections crossing the Yangtze River—the metro is an essential part of getting around Chongqing.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 1 (Red): Runs east to west, linking major urban areas.
  • Line 2 (Light Green): Famous for its monorail section, running from the southwest into central Chongqing.
  • Line 3 (Dark Blue): Stretches from the north to the airport in the south, perfect for airport transfers.
  • Line 6 (Light Purple): Covers the northeast, including attractions in Jiangbei District.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Niujiaotuo Station: Connects Line 2 and Line 3, an important interchange for travellers.
  • Daping Station: Connects Line 1 and Line 2, with easy access to popular shopping areas.
  • Hongqihegou Station: Links Line 3 and Line 6, offering routes to multiple districts.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

Getting around the Chongqing Metro is straightforward. Signage is available in both Chinese and English, making it easy for international visitors. Use apps like Google Maps or the official metro app for real-time updates and route planning. For hassle-free internet access and smooth navigation, consider using a reliable eSIM from Trip.com.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Chongqing Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Source: viajeroslowcosteros

Navigating the Chongqing Metro becomes much easier once you know how to pay for your journeys. Here’s a simple guide to make your travel as smooth as possible—perfect for travellers who value efficiency, just like in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Ideal for one-way rides. These tokens can be purchased from ticket machines at all metro stations.
  • Tourist Cards: Chongqing Metro does not offer a dedicated tourist pass, but single-trip tokens and rechargeable cards are enough for short stays.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: The system mainly uses tokens and transit cards, so it’s best to rely on these options rather than expecting foreign credit cards to work.

🐰 Transit Card

  • Yikatong Card: The main rechargeable transit card for Chongqing Metro. It’s convenient, reusable, and works for both metro and buses, allowing you to skip queues at ticket machines.
  • Where to Buy: Available at major metro stations and selected convenience stores like 7-Eleven.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Prices are distance-based, starting from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short rides up to about CNY 10 (RM 6.50) for longer journeys across the city.
  • Top-Up Options: The Yikatong Card can be topped up at metro stations, with a minimum reload of CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most common methods in China, but they usually require a local bank account. For most Malaysian travellers, the Yikatong Card is the simplest choice unless you’ve already set up these apps.

Best Option for Travellers

For short-term visits, getting a Yikatong Card is the most practical and efficient. Load about CNY 100 (RM 65) to cover multiple trips without hassle. While there isn’t a multi-day tourist pass, the card’s convenience makes up for it.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Peak-Hour Queues: Expect longer lines during rush hours at busy stations.
  • Foreign Cards: Ticket machines generally don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards—cash is safer for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: Yikatong Cards can be returned for a refund, but check the policy at the station where you purchase it to avoid surprises.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Chongqing Metro

Liziba Station

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When using the Chongqing Metro, it’s important to follow the local queue culture. Always stand behind the yellow safety line and let passengers exit before boarding. This keeps everything smooth and also shows respect for local manners. If you want to get off quickly, position yourself near the doors—but avoid blocking the way. Priority seats are well respected, so do give them up for those in need.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent mode and use earphones if you’re listening to music or videos. Try to keep conversations soft to maintain a calm environment. Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the metro, so it’s best to have your snacks before boarding. If you’re carrying luggage or large bags, keep them close to you and out of the aisles—especially during rush hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

For a more comfortable journey, travel outside of peak hours—late morning or early afternoon is ideal. If you want to enjoy scenic views, take Line 2 and grab a window seat for stunning river landscapes. At interchange stations like Hongqihegou, crowds are usually lighter compared to others. Local tip: at Jiaochangkou Station, sitting in the last carriage gives you quicker access to the escalators.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

One frequent mistake is forgetting to tap out with the metro card, which can result in extra charges. Holding the train doors open is also discouraged and may delay departures. Remember that cash is not accepted—you’ll need a metro card or valid app for payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Chongqing locals often use apps like Baidu Maps for real-time navigation and route planning. Many also prefer to top up their metro cards during off-peak hours to avoid long queues. Understanding these small habits—like keeping personal space and being patient during busy times—will make your metro experience much smoother.

I stayed at the Hilton in Chongqing for three nights and was satisfied with everything. It's very close to the subway station (Lianglukou) and Didi (ride-hailing) is also super convenient. There are plenty of food options nearby, including a Luckin Coffee right outside. The staff were amazing! Housekeeping Auntie Chen (I hope I got the name right) was incredibly thoughtful; she brought amenities for my child and even provided a bathtub liner and bath salts. Vickie and Jason at the front desk provided excellent service and even complimentary breakfast for one day. The concierge staff proactively helped me with my luggage both at check-in and check-out. It truly felt like a home away from home, especially for a mom traveling alone with a child! I recommend bringing a swimsuit. We forgot ours, otherwise, I definitely would have relaxed in the heated pool. I really enjoy swimming in winter.

Chongqing Grand Hyatt Hotel: I stayed here for three nights and found it incredibly convenient. Here's a recap of my trip: Day 1: Took a taxi to the Three Gorges Museum, then swung by the People's Assembly Hall [victory emoji]. After that, a taxi to 18 Steps for some food and exploration. I then hopped on Metro Line 1 to Chaotianmen, where I headed straight to North Cable 720° River View Restaurant (Raffles City store) for stunning river views and a drone show. After a satisfying meal, I walked along the river to Hongyadong [yay emoji]. It was packed, but I still made it there. The best part? My hotel was right in Jiefangbei, so I could just walk back – super convenient! [rose emoji] Day 2: Took a taxi to Hongyadong to catch a ferry ⛴️ to Ciqikou. It was a pleasant ride, 30 yuan per person, and for an extra 20 yuan, you could sit at the front of the boat, which was way better than a regular cruise! [victory emoji]. After filling up on food at Ciqikou and enjoying a stroll while petting cats and dogs, I took Metro Line 1, then transferred to Line 2 to see and experience the famous Liziba station (train going through a building). Sitting at the front of the train on Line 2, you can snap a pic of the train on the opposite track entering the building. I got off at Niujiaotuo and then went to the back of the train to get a fantastic shot of Liziba and Line 3. Then, I took the metro back to the hotel. Its convenient location meant I could just cross the street for an amazing hot pot dinner! [thumbs up emoji] Overall, I found this hotel to be very convenient with excellent service. I'm extremely satisfied with my choice! [playful emoji]

This hotel is a top choice for family trips; everything was excellent, truly nothing to complain about. The service was impeccable and well-organized, and the breakfast was fantastic and orderly. The location is perfect, making it easy to walk or catch a taxi, with plenty of great food options nearby. This time we explored Dajing Alley, and I look forward to discovering more next time. We happened to be there for Valentine's Day, and they even had a special Valentine's themed elevator which was incredibly cute and heartwarming – the kids absolutely loved rushing to ride it every time we left and returned.

It's quiet yet central, providing maximum convenience for exploring Chongqing's main attractions. It's an excellent base for unlocking the city's core sights, highly recommended for family trips! I've always trusted Kempinski, and this stay didn't disappoint. The room was spacious and grand, with several windows offering stunning river views, especially the Chongqing Grand Bridge over the Yangtze River at night, which was a real treat. The service was excellent; I'd like to particularly commend the gentleman at the front desk who handled my check-in. The swimming pool and executive lounge were also great. The lounge food, in particular, was exquisite and delicious, and it was quiet with few people, which is often not the case at other hotels. The location is superb, perfectly situated for both easy access and a peaceful environment. Highly recommend!

This hotel is simply stunning. The moment I opened the door, I was completely blown away by the view. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a full river view. During the day, you can watch the river flow gently, bridges spanning the banks, and the city slowly unfold before your eyes. At night, as the lights come on and a gentle breeze drifts in, seeing the city lights across the river gradually illuminate brought such a peaceful and healing feeling. The room was clean and comfortable, the bedding was excellent for a restful sleep, and the location was convenient. Parking was easy with plenty of free spaces. Exploring nearby for food and sights was a breeze. This stay wasn't just about a hotel; it felt like owning a whole slice of Chongqing's gentle charm. Next time I'm in Chongqing, I'll definitely choose this place again. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to truly experience the night views of the mountain city.

Overall, my stay was quite pleasant, and I particularly want to commend the professionalism and thoughtfulness of the front desk staff. When there was an issue with the room type initially assigned, they quickly and efficiently changed my room, making the inconvenience disappear. An added bonus was the delightful surprise of exquisite snacks delivered to my room every afternoon. The hotel's location is excellent, just a few minutes' walk from Jiefangbei, which made getting around incredibly convenient. The only minor downside was that the elevators are shared with other hotels, leading to some inconvenience during peak hours. However, this minor issue doesn't overshadow what was, overall, a very satisfying experience.

Our first stop in Chongqing after a flight with China Southern Airlines. The room was incredibly clean, no arguments there. The location is right next to Jiefangbei, you step out of the front desk and you're on Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, and you can walk to Hongyadong and Shibajie. The location really can't be beaten. The breakfast was plentiful, with no filler items, and the juice was freshly squeezed. The service was excellent; they even upgraded our room, and the higher floors definitely make for a quieter and better night's sleep. As we were leaving, they gave the kids auspicious horse bracelets. It's four-star pricing for a five-star experience. The ninth-floor sky garden is also very photogenic.

This hotel operates more like an apartment-style guesthouse, located within an office building, with four or five similar properties in the same building. The location is great, offering a quiet retreat despite being in a bustling area, and the room provides a nice river view. However, there are significant issues with the room's facilities. There are no power outlets on either side of the bed near the living area, making charging devices very inconvenient. The air conditioning only heats and doesn't cool, which made the room feel incredibly stuffy. The light switches were also faulty, and the curtains often wouldn't open. Furthermore, the water temperature in the bathroom was very low, taking a long time to get warm.

✅ Price 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ¥600+/night (during Chinese New Year) ✅ Transportation 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 About a 30-minute taxi ride from Chongqing North Station/Jiangbei Airport to the hotel; The hotel is a 5-minute walk to Linjiangmen Metro Station and a 15-minute walk to Xiaoshizi Metro Station. Most attractions are usually accessed from Xiaoshizi Metro Station. ✅ Shopping 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 One metro stop away is Raffles City Shopping Mall at Chaotianmen, with an observation deck on the 42nd/47th floor (requires a purchase or ticket). Being in one of the busiest tourist areas, all kinds of local specialties, snacks, and milk tea are available, though you'll likely face queues during peak season. ✅ Dining 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The hotel's breakfast is served in a noodle shop that's also open to the public. They offer local specialties like Chongqing noodles (Xiaomian), Wanza noodles, and Wonton. The taste is decent, and I personally found the Wanza noodles to be the best. The hotel also has its own tea house in the backyard, where guests can get 2 complimentary coffees or teas daily. The tea house also functions as a reading room, board game area, and internet lounge. 👍 There are many dining options around the hotel. I recommend the Banshan•Chuan restaurant directly opposite, which costs around 200 RMB per person. The food is very complex and full of Sichuan flavor! ✅ Service/Facilities 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The hotel service is very personalized. The front desk staff and the aunties at the noodle shop were all enthusiastic in trying to meet guests' needs (during our stay, we borrowed a microwave and asked for disposable cutlery, etc.). Thanks for the warm service during Chinese New Year~ The hotel also has a gym (see p6) and a laundry room (3 sets of wash/dry machines), all maintained cleanly and tidily. 🔇 The only downside was the heavy traffic during Chinese New Year, with drivers honking their horns incessantly, which the hotel windows couldn't block out at all 😂 Don't expect to fall asleep before midnight [sneer emoji]

The hotel's location is super convenient! It's just a ten-minute walk to Raffles City, and after watching the drone show at Chaotianmen Square, it was an easy stroll back to the hotel. When my child got sick during our stay, the staff were incredibly helpful, bringing us water and supplies multiple times. The next day, my child was still unwell and couldn't go out, so I asked the front desk if we could have a late check-out.
