The Phoenicia tries very hard. And the truth is they mostly succeed. But when you bill yourself as the best hotel in Malta (or one of them, at least) it's the details that are what entitle you to claim you're more than just ”very good” but really are ”the best.” And the Phoenicia sometimes overlooks the small details that characterize a true 5-star property. The Hits The staff: They do everything in their power to make one's stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. Their attitude is genuine and sincere. And they bend over backwards to accommodate, no matter the situation or the request. The location: Simply the best on the entire island, just outside the gate to Valletta, near the bus terminal, the main square and fountain, pedestrian friendly, you can walk everywhere. The grounds: Beautifully landscaped gardens that are a joy to amble through, magnificent pool, lovely terrace, stunning views over the marina. The common areas: Lobby, restaurant, bars...all are tastefully appointed and comfortable. The Misses The food: The meals we had were all very mediocre, nothing special. We were expecting a 5-star dining experience and were very disappointed. Breakfast is a bit of a madhouse. The menus (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are limited and what's offered is fairly pedestrian. The restaurant servers seemed harried (breakfast) and not very polished (dinner.) The room: Cramped, tiny, and in need of renovation. I booked through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts, was not upgraded even though hotel was not full. I asked...no upgrade. The Club Bar: Although open it wasn't staffed...at all. Had to physically go find someone (in the adjoining restaurant) to come and make us drinks, then carried them ourselves to our table...and bussed our dirty glasses ourselves when finished. Unacceptable in the extreme. It's these serious missteps that keep the Phoenicia more of a 3 to 4 star property...although they try really hard. I would give it another chance if I were to return.
