Castlemaine Colonial Motel

Sketchy start due to change of management but Kate at reception worked some magic and made us comfortable for the week we have stayed Rooms are great and beds are fine Hot water for days and close to amenities Will return again in the near future

We had a room booked for Friday night, upon arrival there was no one at reception, we waited for 10 minutes then I rang the phone number provided on paperwork we had. A man answered and said ‘ oh ok I’ll let the manager know’ I no sooner hung up and a woman appeared , she was the cleaner.. she explained she was the only one there and our room wasn’t ready yet, and to give her 30 mins. We did.. ( it was well after the time we were able to check in) we got back she processed the fee and told us our room number and said she was in a hurry, had to catch a bus or something. We get to our room there were no towels .. so hubby went out to find her , she brings back towels and then says ‘‘ oh I don’t know if your bathroom was cleaned’’ we were thinking ‘ hang on didn’t we just give you extra time to finish our room and you were the only one here , how can you not know ‘ The carpet is stained the doona/ coverlet was stained .. Disgusting,.. there was no one there at this point to complain to and obviously the manager doesn’t care either , because other people were arriving and waiting at reception … PATHETIC

This is a one star Motel if that. Facilities are old and tired. The Bedding in all rooms occupied smelt like vomit and other unmentionables. There was rubbish under all the beds. The Towels smelt like they had been left in the washing machine for days. The smell of cooking from previous occupants permeated everything. Bathroom was old and cold. Motels can be basic but nice this Motel is dirty (filthy even) and unkempt. Avoid, you have been warned!

We were pleasantly surprised with this accommodation. The reviews were a bit hit and miss, but our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The bed was comfy. It was a cold night so we were grateful for the extra blanket. It had everything we needed and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The position was excellent - easy walking distance to the station (we went on the train), cafes, restaurants and shops. We also walked to the Mill. Although on a main road, the traffic was not an issue for us as we had a room at the back of the motel. The bathroom was a little cold (no heating) and could have done with better lighting.

I had seen the varying reviews so asked to see the room when we arrived. Found it was nice, clean and roomy. Parking was no problem and it's a short walk to shops. Would definitely stay again, in fact we stayed an extra night.

I booked a room at the Colonial Motel in Castlemaine in November 2022, for a Saturday night in March 2023 to attend a show at the Theatre Royal. We arrived in the afternoon to be told that they could not find our booking. I pulled out the email confirmation and gave the booking number. After some time I was told that my booking was held against the conference room, despite the email clearly stating that it was for an Executive Queen Room. I was then told that all rooms were booked and there was no availability because they had a film crew staying with them. There was an attempt to blame a third party booking company for the 'mix up' but I had booked directly with the motel and my email confirmation was from the manager. The only alternative suggested was that we might like to try for somewhere in Bendigo. We had no option but to drive back to Melbourne that night at 11.30pm. I emailed the manager to express my dissatisfaction with this experience, as he was not in attendance in the Saturday afternoon. I did not even receive an acknowledgement of my email. Book this motel at your own risk, I won't be attempting to stay there again.
