If it wasn't for the 2 cleaners, Clare & Bernie, I would not have stayed one night in this hotel. They were amazing and did everything they could to make sure I was comfortable. On arrival, I thought the hotel was closed as the small door with the 'hotel' sign was locked. I got in through another door and walked into what I presumed to be reception. No-one was there, and, as you will see in the pictures, it didn't look like anyone had been there in a long time. I rang the bell and waited, then waited some more before going into the bar and asking one of the staff if the hotel was actually open. He assured me it was and asked me to return to reception and someone would be with me. I waited at least 5 minutes for someone to come and check me in. I was informed the lift wasn't great and I would be quicker going up the stairs which I did with a heavy suitcase. At the top of the stairs, the door to the bedrooms is on the left and as soon as I opened it, there was the strong stench of fresh cigarette smoke. I thought someone must have been smoking in the corridor as it was so strong. I opened my room door, Room 1 ,and thought I'd escape the cigarette smell, but no, it had come through the door when I opened it and I could smell nothing else but that. It continued to permeate through the bottom of my door. Luckily, I had a mask with me and kept that on for a while. I went downstairs, and rung the reception bell and told the manager that people were clearly smoking in their rooms. She said it's not allowed and she would go up and spray some air freshener. This didn't happen and so I got in my car and went out. When I returned after about an hour, I could smell that something had been sprayed but the cigarette smell was still there and continued for the next 2 days of my stay. It was disgusting and made me feel unwell. After I'd been there for 4 nights, I was speaking with Bernie, one of the cleaners about the softness of the shower floor and I was afraid of falling through it. She said she would report it. That afternoon I received a call from Thomas, the manager, advising me my room was condemned and I was to move to Room 2. This (hotel) is seriously in need of an upgrade. The decor is appalling and unsightly and the furniture is old and in disrepair. In saying all of this, my bed was clean and comfortable and both cleaners kept it that way each day. I feel for the staff working here because how can you take pride in working for an employer that clearly doesn't care about their clientele and, although no evidence, I'm sure cares even less about their staff? I would rate this establishment a maximum of 2 out of 10 and the only reason I rate it 2 is because of the staff. I really do feel for them.
