23 Mayfield

From start to finish the most amazing stay! Ross and Kathleen make 23 Mayfield feel like you’re coming home. Breakfast is Michelin star in my eyes, pre booking the night before is so easy to do and the specials each day are always so unique and beautifully presented. There’s a “starter” of natural yoghurt, fruit and oats or the most amazing porridge with an incredible whisky drizzle. The “main” is just mouth wateringly worth the wait and doesn’t disappoint. The rooms are just perfect, the attention to detail and modern twists are well hidden (the in room fridge in the wardrobe and tea and coffee facilities) Parking is really secure, to the front and the rear of the property so there wasn’t any worry about where to leave the car. The room has a very handy information book and a little map showing which buses are available and where they go to which is really handy and the buses are really reliable too. We walked into town most days which was really nice too… for me the location is perfect! The club room is so warm and relaxing, with a cheeky little bar area with a really good range of drinks. We went in December so there were Christmas movies playing which really lent into the a traditional feel. Nothing is too much trouble and I’m genuinely very sad to be leaving after the best 4 days!

No 23 Mayfield Gardens is indeed a gem of a Guest House, and it is where we had a very enjoyable stay for 3 nights in early December 2023. No 23 has a warm ambience and the hosts Ross and Kathleen made us very welcome, so that we settled in right from the start. Our room was a Premier Colonial (Room 4); it was very comfortable and it had a pleasant view over the rear garden to the residential neighbourhood beyond. After a comfortable night’s sleep, breakfast gave us a marvellous start to each day; our separate table by the fireside where a warming fire blazed and a really tasty selection of food choices on the menu. Such a treat! The house has many wonderful features and we were very interested to hear from Ross about its history. All of the work that they themselves have since done to the property has made it into the beautiful guest house it now is - notably the impressive restoration of the central staircase and hallway, the dining room and the characterful club room with its amazing artwork. We wholeheartedly recommend No 23 and we will certainly stay here on our next holiday in Edinburgh.

The moment you walk into 23 Mayfield you are blown away. The attention to detail and hospitality from the owners are so welcoming. The vintage style interior has been beautifully decorated. The breakfast is out of this world with daily specials, amazing well cooked porridge with little extra touches and the best vegetarian breakfast. There are local recommendations for places to eat. Really good information pack. The pillows, linens and towels are top quality. Bed is amazingly comfortable. You will be very spoilt staying at 23 Mayfield. We will definitely return.

Our second visit to what feels like our second home. Ross and Kathleen are the best hosts you could wish for, the attention to detail and the customer service is second to none. What can I say - it’s a beautiful building, meticulously maintained, and the rooms are exquisite. In addition, Ross is a genius when it comes to breakfast, the best I have ever had on any overnight stay. Always something different on the menu, and always executed to perfection. We love this place through and through, the ambience in the lounge, the warmth of the hosts, the stunning setting for breakfast, and the immaculate rooms… In my opinion it’s unbeatable. Thank you Ross and Kathleen, we miss you already, but I’m sure we’ll see you soon!

Loved our first stay in Scotland! 4 nights here couldn’t have been better. Hosts were amazing to put up with 3 Americans and a Canadian. Rooms were lovely and spacious. Breakfasts top notch! Very comfortable sitting room to play games and have a drink. Location is perfect. Took all the dining recommendations and they did not disappoint. Hope to join them again someday.

What an absolute treat this place is! Sumptuous surroundings with impeccable interior details, an extremely comfortable bed, the finest of breakfasts and the friendliest welcome, what more can one possibly ask for... Big thank you to Kathleen and Ross for ensuring we had a lovely stay and for all their recommendations which were spot on.

My family felt we lived in the lap of luxury at this B&B. We stayed in the Grand Tudor since we were a family of four. After hours check-in was seamless, and it was the best night's sleep my family had our entire stay in Scotland. We booked two nights, and our young girls were giddy with "how fancy" they felt. I cannot say enough about breakfast; every bite was scrumptious, whether eating the porridge, haggis, or the fresh, wild salmon offered in the day's special. We made good use of the club room, as my husband and I enjoyed the Platform 9 3/4's honor bar, and my daughter cozied up to her book on the sofa. The hosts happily gave us advice on lesser known but still impressive attractions in Edinburgh and answered any questions we had. I think they also went above and beyond in keeping our luggage after checkout so we could explore more of Edinburgh before returning home. I'd love to return here just my husband and myself for an anniversary. Location: Not in the city center, but buses easily get you back to it. The neighborhood is full of wonderful restaurants. Aesthetic: It's meticulously decorated. I don't feel any detail was overlooked. I felt a dark academia vibe in the club room and to an extent, in the breakfast room. It also felt that you could imagine yourself living in decades past like the 1930's, 40's, and 50's depending on the music playing in either area. Whereas the common areas were darker color pallets, the bedrooms were bright white walls and rich wooden panels. All the artwork and portraits are worth investigating.

Stayed this winter with family, and it is by far one of the best B&Bs we've stayed in! The rooms were beautiful and the breakfasts were delicious. Walking distance to some restaurants and minute away from a bus stop with transport to key places, like the Royal Mile. Everything was perfectly kept in the hotel. Ross and Kathleen were lovely and incredibly accommodating. Also: great vegetarian options for breakfast!
