Simonstone Hall Hotel

Booked as a surprise for my hubby Daves birthday and we just needed a little break away after a rubbish few months with hubbys cancer diagnoses and then he had an accident tripping over our puppy which needed surgery so this was a perfect getaway. The hotel is beautiful and very peaceful even with the peacocks. Set on a hillside just outside Hawes. The views are just stunning. I could have sat looking at the view for hours. We arrived just before 3 and was Welcomed by a lovely man named Dan. We had some drinks in the bar and the receptionists named Jo came to tell us our room was ready when we were. We finished our drinks and headed to our room which was room 8 . The room was beautiful and was on the first floor and we had a fab view out the front looking across the dales. We had a little balcony but you couldn’t sit out there was just nice and we had the some guests appear ( two male peacocks) in the morning for their breakfast which was amazing . I think if they could have they would have been in the room lol. The room was perfect for our stay. Beautiful decor and comfy beds and pillows. Loved the old telephone in the room. Breakfast was yummy. And great choice. Yogurts, granola, fruit, cereals and a cooked breakfast. Fruit juices tea and coffee. We booked dinner one evening and ate in the bar. Again food was delicious. Didn’t have a pud but had a cocktail instead which was amazing. The hotel isn’t far from Hawes which has lovely little shops and pubs but it does get busy with bikers. We visited Hardraw force waterfall which isn’t too far to get to. Wensleydale creamery worth a visit too. We had a really lovely weekend so thank you to Jake, Dan and Jo for making it extra special. We will be back again. X

Felt compelled to write this review as all is not well at this hotel. I am sure many guests have a great stay, but we didn’t. On the positive side, Room 5 has fantastic views and the breakfast is very good. Room 3 has paint peeling off walls and window frames and we had to change rooms as the shower didn’t work. Noisy radiator, taps and loo. Apart from the grass being cut, there was pretty much no other gardening done. At the hotel entrance pots are full of weeds, which is a tell tale sign that the hotel is not looked after. Some of the attitudes of the staff are very poor indeed and sloppy attention to detail during the second morning’s breakfast. On arrival, after a long journey, there was no one on reception and took nearly 10 mins to find anyone. The hotel needs investment as well as the staff need customer service training. On departure, was asked ‘was all ok with our stay’? When I said ‘no’ they said they would remove the drinks from the bill, but they didn’t. I wrote to the owner with a list of issues and received a very rude and unprofessional response. I am sure many people will have a pleasant stay, but we didn’t and won’t be returning under the current ownership.

After being on my bucket list to visit this hotel for years, it certainly lived up to my high expectations. Loved every minute. The staff are wonderful especially Jo on reception. The views are amazing and the old style decadence this hotel has is just the tonic to fully relax and get away from it all. Those terrace views are just superb. The peacocks add that extra touch, the are so funny. I can definitely say I'll be back again soon..♥️

We had a fabulous four night break staying at Simonstone hall, one of the most friendly places we have ever stayed. The staff were more like family with everyone so approachable. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast and evening meals, all of which were absolutely excellent, with the Feather blade beef being one of the outstanding choices on the evening menu. The location is ideal for visitors wanting to explore the upper dales, and see the local wildlife, including red squirrels. The resident peacocks Do add some style to the hall and gardens. We hope we can return again possibly in summer next time. Many thanks to all of the team for making our visit so welcoming. Ian & Sue

We have had a three night stay and have enjoyed the whole experience. The food has been exceptional. Work of art on a plate and delicious. The staff were excellent, friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Beautiful old building which must take some massive upkeep. It’s been tastefully restored. Thank you.

The rooms are tired and i think this place is where the furniture goes to die!!,No one about when you need someone and the manager is soo rude he doesnt give a s**t .Had best night at george and dragon will be stopping there next time at less than half the cost and 10 times the value never again !!!!

I stayed at this hotel for one night last October and it was a lovely little get away set in the amazing Yorkshire countryside. The hotel is traditional but nicely decorated and has a very cozy feel about it, the staff were also excellent. It’s set in a beautiful location and is truly the embodiment of Englands green and pleasant land. I would highly recommend going to Hawes for a walk and sampling some of the great shops and pubs there. The restaurant serving the evening meal at Simonstone is simply fantastic and the breakfast was also really good, unfortunately it’s getting rarer and rarer to find good spots for a proper traditional full English breakfast but this place does a superb breakfast. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a night away with stunning countryside and superb food and drinks.

Ridiculously overpriced. We had the "Bar Menu" which was £29 for a miniscule Sea Bass. Hotel was deathly quiet which, in retrospect can be explained by the Michelin Star prices at a 3 Star hotel. Four of us ate and cost £250 - the night before we had a far better meal with proper sized portions in a lovely atmosphere at the Green Dragon pub a mile away for less than £100. Go figure....

The position of the hotel located deep within the Yorkshire Dales is unparalleled, the approach involves negotiating narrow country lanes which is a little intimidating if you are driving a large SUV but well worth the effort once you arrive. Inbound from the M6 we took the route through Sedbergh and on the way home we opted for the more southerly option via Hawes which we found much more relaxing. The origins of the hotel go back many centuries and on arrival you can’t help but feel the many years of history. From the mellow stone exterior to the oak panelled interior it couldn’t be anything other than an English country house. Our room ( number 7) on the first floor was very large with a stone mullioned window looking out over the hotel’s terrace to the rolling hills beyond. All the usual modcons were present,notable features being the very substantial canopied four poster and something I have never seen before a two man walk in shower with two separate shower heads! The bar lounge is comfortable and very country house with well stuffed leather chairs that definitely didn’t come from IKEA last month. The dining room looks out over the rear of the property,not as spectacular as the front but relaxing nonetheless. The a la carte menu is not extensive but quite sufficient,more importantly the quality is good and the atmosphere in the restaurant relaxed rather than formal. Breakfast was also very good with this time a surprisingly wide choice. The final element of a hotel/restaurant experience is the service and once again Simonstone Hall did not disappoint. We were warmly welcomed and checked in by the owner who carried our bags to the room and incidentally down again the following morning. Front of house manager Daniel was very hands on,very engaging and a real asset to the team,he even laughed at my jokes,top man! In case you think that the above is overly complimentary I assure you that I am the first to complain if things are not as they should be, this was not the case at Simonstone.
